  • Strictly’s Craig Revel Horwood reveals lonely Christmas with microwaved dinner

Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has opened up about his early Christmas memories in Australia and his festive dinner that was reheated in a microwave

Strictly Come Dancing’s own Craig Revel Horwood has lit up Stamford with the festive sparkle of Christmas lights, not far from his King’s Cliffe residence. However, not every holiday season has been as bright for the Aussie-born judge. He shared memories of sweltering Yuletides and microwave dinners with The Guardian back in 2014. He reminisced: “I grew up in Australia, so Christmas was hot. One year all my chocolates melted together in my Christmas stocking.”

Craig also described his unique family dinners: “In the 1970s the microwave changed dinner forever. My dad, who was in the navy, would make dinner in the morning, plate up a meal for each of us and put it under clingfilm with our name on top. He’d put the plates in a row by the microwave and at lunch he’d heat them. We’d line up and be served at three minute intervals and then file off to the table. If your dinner was the first one microwaved it was pretty lonely when you sat down to eat!”

Craig has remembered his previous Christmases
Fast-forward to a 2022 interview with The Independent, where Craig spilled the beans on his most cherished and most regrettable Christmas gifts. His best present? “The best Christmas present I’ve ever received was my GI Joe helicopter,” he says with glee. And the dud gift that still sticks out? “The worst was a tea towel from Australia worth £1.99 and I had to pay £20 at the Post Office to get it out of customs.”

SIMILAR ARTICLES TO THISCraig Revel Horwood swapped his home Down Under for London’s bright lights in 1989, and these days he lives with his fiancé, plant wizard Jonathan Myring, in a sprawling seven-bedroom pad in King’s Cliffe, Northamptonshire. The loved-up pair, who swiped right into each other’s lives on Tinder, have pinned their hopes on a 2027 wedding after getting engaged back in 2020.

But it’s over in Stamford, Lincolnshire where Craig had the glitzy job of switching on the Christmas lights this year. Addressing the crowd at Red Lion Square on 21 November with the light switch plunger in hand, he declared: “I’ve just moved here, well three years ago darling, and I absolutely adore it. I’m very excited about plunging this baby so we are out of darkness and into glamour.”

A bit of drama unfolded as some bulbs stubbornly stayed off, prompting Horwood’s quip: “someone’s pulled our plug,” but swiftly resolved when he gave the plunger an extra shove, admitting: “It was me – I didn’t push it down enough.”

Gavin and Stacey fans at war as viewers divided over finale’s twists and shock split

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas finale featured shocking romances and unexpected splits while wrapping up long-running storylines, including Nessa and Smithy’s wedding

Gavin and Stacey fans have been left divided as the finale featured shocking romances and splits.

The episode aired on Christmas Day from 9pm to 10:35pm on the BBC, marking the conclusion of the story after the 2019 festive special, which ended on a cliffhanger when Vanessa ‘Nessa’ Jenkins, portrayed by Ruth, proposed to James’ character Neil ‘Smithy’ Smith.

The special got off to a strong start as viewers went wild when Nessa lit up one of her trademark cigarettes AND a vape at the same time. Fans of the hit comedy loved seeing the BBC bend the rules ton promoting smoking in order to pay homage to Nessa’s long-standing nicotine habit.

One fan wrote: “Gavin and Stacey fans were stunned Not me wondering if they’d sensor Nessa’s smoking in the big old year of 2024, only for them to have her swinging between a vape AND a cigarette #GavinAndStacey.” Another typed: “PLEASE Nessa vaping and smoking at the same time she’s literally just a girl #GavinAndStacey.”

Another laughed: “Nessa was always going to be smoking a cig and vape at the same time #GavinAndStacey.” While another fan remarked that they felt Ruth’s character had become iconic for her behaviour. One wrote: “Nessa vaping and smoking at the same time. my queen forever. #GavinAndStacey.”

One surprising romance revealed in the finale was that Stacey’s mother, Gwen West, who had previously struggled with love, had secretly been dating Dave Coaches for six months. This news shocked her family, particularly Bryn, who initially disapproved but eventually accepted their relationship.

Another unexpected moment came when Smithy proposed to Nessa, bringing closure to the cliffhanger from the 2019 special and leading to their wedding. That came after Smithy’s pal Gavin, played by Mathew Horne, stopped Smithy marrying his girlfriend Sonia – a match-up that had initially left fans devastated.

.The 90-minute festive episode also featured Sheridan Smith returning as Smithy’s sister Rudi, while Adrian Scarborough and Julia Davis reprised their roles as the newly divorced Pete and Dawn Sutcliffe.

One user happy with the way the finale ended penned: “There will never be a better show than Gavin and Stacey. thanks for all the laughs and happy memories, you’ll be missed!”

Whilst another wrote: “That was the most perfect way to end Gavin + Stacey. Tonight I’ve laughed. I’ve cried. And everything in between. Ruth Jones, Nessa, and James Corden, Smithy, said at the premiere that the show’s all about the emotions of love and everything in between – tonight showed that.” A third penned: “SOBBING at gavin and stacey it’s about bloody time nessa and smithy ffs heart is healed finally.” And a fourth wrote: “GAVIN AND STACEY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL YOU WERE EVERYTHING I WANTED AND MORE.”

Some disapproving fans also took to X, with one penning: “Gavin and Stacey finale was proper average.” A second wrote: “Gavin and Stacey was predictable, “while a third penned: “Sorry but that Gavin & Stacey ep was cr*p.” And a fourth added: “Question those that enjoy Gavin and Stacey. Coronation Street fans divided on Gail’s goodbye as Helen Worth breaks silence on exit

Gail Platt has left Coronation Street after 50 years and actress Helen Worth has broken her silence after the emotional exit

Coronation Street has officially said goodbye to Gail Platt/Rodwell after 50 years – and ITV viewers are divided.

Helen Worth exited the soap in an emotional Christmas Day episode that saw Gail finally get her happy ending, as she married Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson) and said goodbye to her family and friends.

After she had a nightmare in which her late serial killer ex-husband Richard Hillman tried to stop her marrying Jesse, Gail decided she wanted nothing more than to be Mrs Chadwick and to swap Weatherfield for a new life in France.

But Gail’s happily ever after left a few viewers wanting another chapter. “@itvcorrie pretty poor show today,” one soap fan fumed on Twitter (X) today. “Felt like Gail was a background character in her own exit storyline. Pairing her off with that a gormless extra she shared no chemistry with was a disgrace to a character of 50 years #corrie.”

Gail finally got her happy ending and bid farewell to Coronation Street

“They’ve messed up this Gail exit storyline so bad…Helen Worth is “worth” so much more after 50 years… #corrie @itvcorrie,” another raged, with a third adding: “Watching Gail’s last episode of Corrie and it was a joke minus Richard Hillmans cameo. It was the equivalent of leaving a Job and them not bothering getting you a gift. Surely it needs revamped? #Coronationstreet #Corrie.”

However, some looked Gail’s farewell and felt it was a fitting end for the much-loved soap legend. “A brilliant Christmas episode of #Corrie tonight,” one penned. “A really good mix of comedy, Drama Catfight and emotion. Goodbye Gail and a huge congratulations to Helen Worth on 50 years of Coronation Street.”

The episode was available to view on ITVX from 7am this morning before being shown like at 7pm on ITV1. One viewer who opted to watch early told their followers on Twitter this morning: “Watched todays episode of #Corrie and you will need tissues as its Gail’s final episode. Helen Worth has been incredible to watch as Gail Platt.”

Helen thanked viewers for “coming on the journey with me” as she said farewell to her Coronation Street character Gail after 50 years on the cobbles. The tears from her on-screen family were real as she was driven away down the cobbles, ITV said. In a pre-recorded message, which showed the actress sitting in her family living room on set, the 73-year-old said: “Hello, all of you. It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to say, ‘ta ta!’.

“It’s been a fabulous 50 years, and I just wanted to thank all of you, some of you who may have been watching for 50 years. Is there anybody? And those of you who’ve been watching for a few years. Thank you. Thanks for coming on the journey with me. I‘ve had a wonderful time. I’ve loved it all.

“All the stories, and of course, working with the wonderful Platts, which, for me, is what it’s all about. And there’ll be more Platt stories, and I hope you’ll be watching. Lots of love and thanks from me. Bye.” It marks the end of half a century of playing the much-loved – and often married – Gail.

Gail and richard in a car with Gail gagged
Tricky Ricky made a cameo during Gail’s final episodes
Gail married her first husband Brian Tilsley, played by Christopher Quinten, in 1979 and they welcomed their first child, a son Nick, in 1980. But their lives together became strained, with Gail divorcing him after having an affair with Brian’s cousin Ian Latimer. They later remarried when their daughter Sarah was born in 1987, but just a year later Brian was stabbed to death by a group of teenagers outside a nightclub.

Following Brian’s death, Gail found herself in a relationship with Martin Platt, portrayed by Sean Wilson, who was 10 years her junior. They welcomed their son David in 1990 and married the following year before moving into the famous No 8 house with their children. After a decade together, the marriage fell apart in 2000 when Martin confessed to having an affair with Rebecca Hopkins, with the couple divorcing a year later.

During the summer, Helen’s exit storyline was thrown into uncertainty after Sean returned to the show briefly but later left for “personal reasons”. The actor, who had starred in the soap for more than two decades, later claimed he was axed when a historic assault allegation emerged – which he denies.

Meanwhile, Gail’s next marriage turned out to be her most tumultuous as husband Richard Hillman – played by Brian Capron – was a con artist and serial killer. After confessing his crimes to Gail, he attempted to murder Gail and her children by tying them up in the family car and driving them into the canal.

The Platts were rescued from the water but Richard drowned, bringing his homicidal days to an end in 2003. Gail waited a while before diving into another marriage but she found herself in a secret relationship with Joe McIntyre, the father of Tina, who was dating Gail’s son David.

Their relationship was discovered and the couple married in 2010 after Joe, played by Reece Dinsdale, sought help for his painkiller addiction issues. Their relationship also came to a dramatic end after Joe tried to fake his death to claim life insurance money, but drowned in the process.

Michael Rodwell ( Les Dennis ) was Gail’s fifth husband – they first met when he attempted to burgle her house. They married in 2015, but split after a dispute over Michael’s son. Not long after, Michael died from a heart attack in 2016.

Having joined the cobbles in July 1974, Helen’s character has been a prominent figure in a number of explosive storylines gripping the soap over the years, with her ill-fated love life coming to define the character. In 2014, ITV honoured the long-serving actress with a documentary celebrating her 40 years on the soap with a one-off special titled Gail & Me.

Gavin and Stacey viewers go wild as BBC sitcom breaks rule for iconic Nessa moment

Gavin and Stacey fans were stunned to see Ruth Jones’s character Nessa seemingly flouting BBC rules for a scene in the last ever episode of the long-running sitcom

Gavin and Stacey fans were left howling over a visual joke that showed Ruth Jones’s character Nessa smoking and vaping at the same time.

Christmas Day saw the long-running BBC sitcom reach a conclusion – ending 14 years of laughs and tears. The last ever episode revealed that James Cordon’s Smithy had failed to accept Nessa’s proposal from the 2019 Christmas special and he was instead set to marry his girlfriend Sonia, played by Laura Aikman.

The last ever episode began with Smithy preparing to celebrate his stag do before he went down the aisle to swap vows with Sonia. The celebration brought all the main characters together for a knees – but Nessa struggled with her emotions as the countdown to the wedding progressed.

Scenes showed her smoking both a cigarette and a vape as she processed her stress outside. And the scene drew attention from TV fans – who are aware that the BBC is generally against showing smoking on screens. Many took to X to share their shock, surprise, and amusement over the scene.

Elsewhere in the episode, fans were also shocked to see John Lewis heavily featured in opening scenes. Traditionally, BBC shows do not heavily feature brands due to strict rules about product placement. The scenes showed Smithy racing through a store in order to find his fiancée, Sonia. One fan wrote on X: “Lot of talk about John Lewis wedding list plug on #gavinandstaceythefinale. There was a time when beeb would have imploded. In fairness some good lines in the big festive watch.”

While another fan seemed desperate to know which branch of the department store was featured. The fan asked: “Folks, where is that John Lewis?I think it’s Chelmsford? #GavinAndStacey” only for a fellow X user to declare: “That was Cardiff JL.”

Fans were devastated when the final episode began to show Smithy was planning to continue to marry Sonia instead of nessa. Fans stormed X with comments, with one writing: “Everyone watching Gavin & Stacey now knowing smithy did not say yes to nessa. #GavinAndStacey.” Another typed: “Nooooo #GavinAndStacey #Gavin&Stacey.” And a further fan wailed: “Gavin and Stacey ruined , why arnt nessa and smithy together?”

Towards the end of the episode, fans were stunned and delighted to see Pam Ferris and Sheridan Smith return to the series – reprising their roles as Cath Smith and Ruth ‘Rudi’ Smith respectively. The characters returned to watch Smithy walk down the aisle on his wedding day – with many feeling the cameos stole the show.

So happy to see her!!” While another fans commented that Sheridan owed her success to the show, commenting: “Sheridan Smith blew up not long after #GavinAndStacey aired for the first time.”

While others were just as excited to see Pam – who famously played Miss Agatha Trunchbull in the 1996 film Matilda. One fan wrote on X: “PAM FERRIS! Now we’re talking #GavinAndStacey.” And another wrote: “The ICON that is Pam Ferris!! Soo glad they brought her back #GavinAndStacey.”

Gavin & Stacey star shares hopes of spin-off as iconic BBC comedy comes to an end

Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page, who plays titular character Stacey Shipman, has revealed her hopes for a spin-off series of the show as it comes to an end very soon

Gavin and Stacey is about the come to an end, 17 years after the very first episode aired, with the highly anticipated ‘finale’ episode airing tonight. Luckily, actress Joanna Page, aka Stacey Shipman, given fans hope that there might be more from the franchise on its way.

Joanna teased the show could potentially continue with a spin-off focusing on Neil ‘the baby’ now that he’s all grown up. While Joanna seemed excited by the idea, she did say it would have to be created and written by James Corden and Ruth Jones. Joanna told The Sun: “A spin off series would be fun, I think the curiosity would be very high. But only if it was to be written by Ruth and James.”

Joanna isn’t the only cast member to hint for a spin-off, Ruth and James have revealed they would like to see what’s next for their characters, Smithy and Nessa. Speaking on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware, James said: “We don’t know if we have another idea in us but I can honestly say that if we didn’t attempt to try and even explore the idea of writing together then I’d be so disappointed.”

Fans all over the country are waiting for the episode to drop on Christmas Day with the question still hanging in the air, did Smithy say ‘yes’ to Nessa? Nessa popped the question to Smithy in the last Christmas Day episode in 2019 which was promptly met by the rolling of the credits.

There have been lots of theories about what the final episode has in store from wedding bells to a potential death. On Heart Radio, Ruth and James teased what’s to come.

I think you’re just going to have to go with the flow and ride those emotions.” While another asked if viewers will finally learn of what happened on the fabled fishing trip between Rob Brydon’s character Uncle Bryn and Robert Wilfort’s character Jason West. But Ruth only teased: “All we can say is it is not illegal in this country.”

Rumours of a character death were spun by James himself when he said earlier this year: “What we were editing today was a very moving and emotional scene at Bryn’s funeral. I’m joking, I promise. Or am I?”

Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page plans for more kids with husband after ‘having tubes tied’

Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page, who previously spoke on Loose Women about her decision to have her fallopian tubes cut, has admitted to still feeling “very maternal”

Joanna Page has candidly discussed the possibility of expanding her family with her husband, despite previously having her “tubes tied”.

In a recent issue of Woman and Home magazine, the Gavin and Stacey actress and mother-of-four revealed that she’d had discussions with her husband, actor James Thornton, about potentially having more children.

Joanna previously told the Loose Women panel about her decision to have her fallopian tubes cut in her mid-forties, and reportedly considered reversing the procedure. She confessed to still feeling “very maternal”, but disclosed that a health check this year led to a moment that “felt huge”.

Joanna stated: “I’ve been thinking about fostering or adopting. It’s something I’ve chatted about with James because I’m still very maternal, and it’s something that I would think about in the future.”

“I don’t regret having my tubes tied, and although I felt broody at the start of the year, I don’t any more. At the beginning of this year, I did a health check, which involved a scan that showed that my right ovary had packed up.

“There wasn’t anything left, no eggs. That moment felt huge, as if my body was saying, ‘That is it’.”

She further revealed that she was prescribed HRT patches after visiting a menopause doctor, but was hesitant to use them as she believed that it meant she wouldn’t have any more kids.

However, she admitted: “I was very down, very depressed. I could cope with flushes, they weren’t bothering me. It was just my mood”.

Speaking previously on Loose Women, Joanna revealed she had been feeling “broody”, but, afterwards, didn’t give it much thought. She then realised that having another pregnancy would be impossible, admitting it would leave her “utterly exhausted”.

The Love Actually star continued: “But not that long ago, I went on the internet, I looked up: ‘Can you have your tubes put back together?’ You can. One-in-200 women can maybe get pregnant after doing that. I told James, he just looked at me and went: ‘You what? What on earth are you going on about?’ So I will not be having anymore. I’ve got my beautiful four children.”

As a mother of four young kids, Eva, Kit, Noah, and Boe, Joanna has reportedly decided to scale back her acting work and take on presenting roles to spend more time with her family. She previously joked about nearly divorcing her husband after the Covid lockdown affected their sex life, with the couple struggling to find time for each other while caring for their kids during the school closures.

Joanna shared that they argued and threatened to divorce throughout lockdown, even going a month without speaking to each other.
