Prince William throws punches as he jokes ‘it’s been a while’

Prince William dropped into the Centrepoint’s charity base in Ealing in west London, where he spoke to those facing homelessness and joined in with a boxing class

Prince William put on his boxing gloves and threw a few punches on a charity visit today.

The Prince of Wales dropped into the Centrepoint base in Ealing, north west London, where he spoke to youngsters who have turned their lives around with the help of the organisation. William, who this year celebrated 20 years as patron of the charity, used his visit to ask how Centrepoint has been pivotal in helping the service users get back on their feet after the ‘cliffface’ of homelessness, before going on to start university courses and even set up businesses.

After being welcomed to the centre – which offers 17 beds for young people aged 16 to 25 – William was subbed into a competitive game of table football. The heir, who looked relaxed in a blue cardigan and chinos, said: “This looks like it’s getting serious, I don’t want to let you down!”

As he attempted to defend his goal, service user Bethany, 24, told the Prince how she had been left homeless at the age of 17 with a young child before going on to study at the London School of Economics. William said: “You are one of the shining examples of how Centrepoint can help people, can you tell me about the transition of how you came into contact with everyone here?”

Bethany said: “It was close several times to being on the streets, but we were given accommodation that just wasn’t suitable for a young child. When I finally got into contact with Centrepoint they helped me so much with my life skills and everything that was going on with my situation that I was able to go to university, it was totally transformative. It was the safety net I needed and without them I do not know where I would be now.”

After drawing the match 2-2, William conceded “we’ll call it an honourable draw” before Centrepoint CEO Seyi Obakin joined the conversation. Mr Obakin told the prince of the importance of “catching young people before it’s too late” and how the charity was constantly working on “identifying ways in which we can help early on”.

William said: “This is it, and this is what I hear time and time again, the safety net that is needed. Because without it, the alternatives are very real and have huge knock on effects.”

The Prince was then taken outside to join a fitness session run by the Boxwise Foundation. The organisation, founded by philanthropist Nick Maughan who also serves as a trustee of Tusk Trust of which William is a patron, works with the most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people across the UK, striving to reduce the rates of gang violence and knife crime through sport, community and opportunity.

William dived straight after being handed a pair of gloves by Charlie Beatt, a professional coach who has spearheaded the careers of world champions, saying: “You guys look like you’re professionals already!” Mr Beatt took William and a group of five youngsters through a set of boxing drills, throwing left and right jabs followed by a left hook leading the future king to admit: “I’m working up a sweat already”.

After congratulating him on his skillset, William told the trainer: “I might get back into boxing! It’s been a while, a long time actually, but it’s seriously hard work.” Palace aides said the purpose of William’s visit was to “listen and learn” about the ways in which Centrepoint has used decades of experience to help people who find themselves on the edges of society.

The prince is now in his second year of a five-year programme ‘Homewards’, which is aimed at bringing together those suffering from homelessness with businesses, charities and local authorities. The project, run by his Royal Foundation team, has been working in targeted locations including Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole, Lambeth, Newport, Sheffield and Northern Ireland – to build relationships with the private and public towards the goal to end homelessness.

Back inside the centre William spoke to Nora, 21, who was described as a “shining example” of the success of the organisation after setting up her own hairdressing salon and beauty clinic despite being homeless in her teens. She told the prince more needed to be done to help young people stay in education instead of being forced to give up their dreams if they find themselves homeless.

We have to do more to help people as early as possible, because the clifface is quite big. It can be a steep curve upwards if you get the right support, but a huge drop off if you don’t.” Agreeing with the prince, Nora said: “You can’t really build a life if you don’t have the stability, so that is key.”

Following the visit Mr Obakin said William was a “true ambassador” for the cause, adding: “We couldn’t ask for more. The more he takes on, the more he knows he could be open to criticism. People can say ‘oh you live in a palace, what do you know about this situation’, but he listens and he can be the change.

“Everything is laced with risk for him, whether the criticism is that he is being too political or stepping out of his lane, but we need him and we support each other.”

Kensington Palace said Centrepoint, as a key partner of the prince’s homelessness project, would help to advise The Royal Foundation on the design of the programme, and provide advice and guidance on its ongoing development. A spokesperson said: “As you all know, Homewards is now in its second year and The Prince is focussed on the action that can take place across the six locations. He will no doubt take inspiration from the innovative approach he saw at Centrepoint today.”

It comes as William’s estranged brother Prince Harry’s trial against the owners of The Sun newspaper was delayed today. It is not believed that the brothers will see each other if, and when, Harry does return to the UK.

The pair’s infamous feud was deepened after Harry released his autobiography, Spare, in which he claimed a row with William over his wife Meghan once turned physical.

Harry wrote: “He set down the water, called me another name, then came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”

Prince William has never responded to Harry’s claims.

Prince Harry’s court battle with Murdoch papers suffers major delay as judge raises ‘concerns’

Prince Harry’s trial against News Group Newspapers (NGN) was due to begin at the High Court today but has been pushed back due to a series of issues, it has been confirmed

Prince Harry’s latest legal battle at the High Court has been hit by major delays today.

The Duke of Sussex’s trial against the publisher of The Sun was due to get underway this morning, but was delayed after three requests from the legal teams.

Harry, and former Labour deputy leader Lord Tom Watson, are suing News Group Newspapers (NGN) over allegations of unlawful information-gathering. NGN, which also ran the now-defunct News Of The World, denies any unlawful activity took place at The Sun. The Duke has not travelled from his home in California to London for the opening day. It is expected he will come to the UK early next month when he is scheduled to give evidence.

The trial was due to start at 10.30am on Tuesday but was delayed twice to 2pm before a request was made by barristers for both sides for a third adjournment until 10am on Wednesday. But Mr Justice Fancourt refused the request, stating the two sides had had “ample time to seek to resolve their differences”.

Requesting a third adjournment, Anthony Hudson KC, for NGN, said the parties “have been involved in very intense negotiations over the last few days and the reality is we are very close”, adding that there were “time difference difficulties”. He said: “Very unusually, both parties are in complete agreement that this is a very important step. The number of times the parties have been in agreement in this litigation are very few and far between.”

He continued: “We do believe in the long run that this will give significant benefit to the court. For the sake of two hours, we are very concerned that if we don’t have these two hours, something that is capable of being achieved may not be achieved. The reason there is a real difficulty today is to do with time difference issues.

“These time difference difficulties will be resolved very shortly this afternoon and that is why we do suggest that if My Lord is willing to resume tomorrow at 10am, that could make a very significant difference to the parties.”

David Sherborne, for the Duke and Lord Watson, said: “Mr Hudson and I would not be asking for further time if we did not think it stood any prospect of potentially saving a lot of court time.” The parties could now go to the Court of Appeal in a bid to challenge the decision not to allow a third adjournment.

Dismissing the request for a third delay, Mr Justice Fancourt said: “I made it clear this morning when granting the second adjournment that it would be the final adjournment. I see no reason to change my mind. I am not satisfied on the basis of what I have been shown so far that the trial should not proceed at this time and will therefore not allow the further adjournment.”

He then refused the parties permission to appeal against his decision, but said: “I’m not going to stand in the way of access to justice if the parties wish to go to the Court of Appeal.” The High Court trial, which could last up to 10 weeks, is set to resume at 10am on Wednesday.

Exclusive: Strictly star Giovanni Pernice’s heartache as he confesses to fans: ‘I lost all my friends’

Strictly Come Dancing star opens up about his heartache on the first night of his tour in an emotional outburst

Strictly star Giovanni Pernice says he lost all his friends in the aftermath of the Amanda Abbington allegations, saying: “Nobody wanted to be seen with me.”

Speaking on the first night of his tour on Monday night in High Wycombe, Giovanni says how everyone shunned him – leaving him heartbroken. “I felt like the world collapsed….I didn’t have anybody around me,” he said. “All the people that were supposed to be my friend disappeared.”

He says how he “felt alone”, adding: “Nobody wanted to see me, they were like ‘oh you can’t be with him’.

Giovanni had been accused of being a bully by his dance partner. An internal BBC investigation later upheld six of 17 complaints against him but not those of physical aggression. Before the allegations, Gio said he felt “like I was on the top of my game.” He says: “I was untouchable, was a superhero….but fate did have different plans for me.”

But he says how he got through the ordeal by remaining positive. “I always had a voice in my head, saying ‘don’t worry….we know that all of this is going to finish. One day you’ll be back on top and you will feel again.” He says how he took great solace in his musical “idol”.

He added: “There was always one voice. My idol here, Freddie (Mercury ). He would say to me, ‘Giovanni , don’t worry. Whatever happen. Remember the show has to go on.’

The Italian professional, 34, has previously insisted he was merely a “strict teacher” but was never a bully to the Sherlock star, 50.

He added at the end of last year: “Bully is a big word and there’s a difference between being a bully and caring about what you do. “I’m glad 11 allegations have been thrown out. At the beginning there were very serious allegations, for instance threatening her or abusing her, and all of this has been taken out.

“I’m a strict teacher. I said it myself. I care about my job. I’m very competitive.”

Amanda has since told how in the year since she made the complaints she has been accused of accused of “being a liar, a troublemaker and of being ‘mad and unstable’”.

She added: “I’ve also received rape and murder threats. My family and children have been subjected to threats and intimidation.

“Despite this vile abuse, I’ve never regretted coming forward, and today’s apology from the BBC is a vindication of my complaint. It’s also a vindication for the others who have contacted me to express concerns about their own experiences on Strictly.”

ITV Love Island fans fume ‘no one cares’ as they beg for format change

Love Island fans were left fuming tonight over a particular part of the ITV2 show as they begged for a format change for the next series

Love Island fans were left fuming – as they begged for a format change.

The All Stars series is back on our screens with a new set of Islanders from past series returning to the villa in the hope of finding love. Tonight, Curtis and Ekin-Su headed out on a date to an alpaca farm, as the pair explored their connection.

Reading out the text from Love Island bosses, she shared: “Ekin-Su, it’s time for you and Curtis to head out for your first date. Please get ready to leave the Villa. #FirstDateFeels #Al-Pak-A-YourAGame”

“I’ve been wanting to go on a date, a different vibe just us two on our own,” Curtis told her before they headed over to the Alpaca farm and Ekin-Su was quick to point out two alpacas, which she called “me and you”.

Asked how Curtis’ friends might feel about her, Ekin-Su asked: “Do you think your friends would approve of someone like me?” whilst Curtis replied: “Of course they would approve of you, you’re bloody awesome!”

However, fans were left frustrated by the dating segment and urged for a format change.

“Surely producers see all these posts? NO ONE CARES ABOUT THESE STUPID DATES. #LoveIsland,” one wrote, as a second added: “when i wanted to skip that ekin and curtis date so bad and remembered im watching live #LoveIslandAllStars #LoveIsland.”

A third penned: “Watching Ekin and Curtis on this date, feel like I’m watching your mum my dad whatever it’s called lmao #LoveIsland,” as another wrote: “They wasted 15 mins of our life on that date #loveisland #LoveIslandAllStars.”

Another shared: “Get this dry date off my screen! #LoveIslandAllStars #LoveIsland,” whilst one viewer wrote: “I promise you we don’t care or didn’t ask for this ekin su and Curtis date #LoveIslandAllStars #LoveIsland.”

Ekin-Su arrived on the first day as a bombshell. Speaking about what she wanted, she said: “I’d like a man that will love me when I’m in the worst mood possible but still understands why and has no judgments.

“I’d like someone supportive, I don’t care about looks and money – I want someone to be my biggest cheerleader.”

When he entered the villa, Curtis admitted: “I feel like I’m in a different stage in my life. The idea of settling down is a serious idea in my life right now. I haven’t found my true love… that sounds so cheesy doesn’t it. So, I thought, let’s give it another go. It was great fun last time; a lotof emotions. I feel excited to go back. I’m going to have a great fun time and hopefully leave with someone.”

Linda Robson’s absense from ITV Loose Women addressed after Pauline Quirke announcement

Loose Women addressed Linda Robson’s was missing from the ITV daytime show on the same day Pauline Quirke’s husband Steve Sheen announced the actress has been diagnosed with dementia

Loose Women have spoken out on Linda Robson’s absence from the panel following a health announcement concerning Pauline Quirke.

On Tuesday (January 21), Pauline’s other half, Steve Sheen, revealed with a heavy heart that his wife had been diagnosed with dementia and would be retiring from her acting career.

Steve, wed to the Birds of a Feather icon since 1996, disclosed that the diagnosis came in 2021. The Loose Women team, comprised of Ruth Langsford, Kéllé Bryan, Janet Street-Porter, and Jane Moore, dedicated part of the Tuesday episode to commend Pauline, recalling her time as a guest chair on the show.

Ruth divulged that show regular Linda, who famously joined Pauline on Birds of a Feather, was aware of her friend’s struggle for “some time” and would’ve shared more if not for her vacation. “Linda Robson, obviously great friends with Pauline, is actually away at the moment, otherwise she would have joined us today to talk about her friend. And obviously she has known for some time,” explained Ruth.

Linda Robson has shared why her friend Pauline Quirke didn’t like all the “celebrity stuff”.

It was revealed yesterday by Pauline’s husband Steve Sheen that the actress will be retiring from “all professional and commercial duties” after being diagnosed with dementia back in 2021.

In a statement, he said: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of dementia in 2021.

“Pauline has been an inspiration through her work in the film and TV industry, her charity endeavours and as the founder of the very successful Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA). Her talent, dedication and vision have touched countless lives, and will continue to do so through the legacy of her work and through PQA where her vision and guidance has facilitated many young people’s progression and interest in the arts, and enhanced their self-confidence.”

Pauline is best known for starring alongside friend Linda Robson in Birds of a Feather, where Pauline starred as Sharon Theodopolopodous. Linda played her on-screen sister Tracey Stubbs in the hit sitcom.

The pair have remained good friends throughout their life, with Linda previously rubbishing rumours of a feud between them.

Speaking on Loose Women six years ago, Linda revealed: “Pauline doesn’t like doing celebrity stuff, she doesn’t like live television. She’s been on here once or twice and will only come on if I’m on it.

“We’ve never had a feud. We’ve been best mates and we’re still best mates.”

Today, Linda did not appear on Loose Women, with host Ruth Langsford explaining that Linda had been aware of her friend’s diagnosis for “some time” but was on holiday or would have been there to talk about her friend.

Ruth told viewers: “Linda Robson, obviously great friends with Pauline, is actually away at the moment, otherwise she would have joined us today to talk about her friend. And obviously she has known for some time.”

ITV The Chase pulled from schedule amid shake-up with another show also impacted

The Chase won’t be airing as usual one day next week as ITV has covered the quiz show’s typical slot in its schedule with coverage of Donald Trump’s inauguration as US President

Fans of the Chase may be surprised to discover that the show has been bumped from its usual slot next week.

The ITV quiz show, hosted by Bradley Walsh, typically airs for an hour each weekday. Each episode sees a team of four contestants take on either Shaun Wallace (The Dark Destroyer), Jenny Ryan (The Vixen), Darragh Ennis (The Menace), Mark Labbett (The Beast), Anne Hegerty (The Governess) or Paul Sinha (The Sinnerman).

The Chase however won’t be airing on Monday (January 20) evening like it usually does. Instead, during its usual time slot in the schedule, ITV viewers will be able to watch coverage of Donald Trump’s Inauguration. As reported by the Express, a two-hour live special will be hosted by ITV News broadcaster Tom Bradby from Washington, D.C. that evening as president-elect Trump is inaugurated for a second term. The former US president won Kamala Harris in the November elections and will succeed Joe Biden.

Fans will know that the Chase typically airs from 5pm to 6pm on weekdays. However, the US inauguration will affect Monday’s schedule. Deal or No Deal has also been affected by ITV’s coverage of the event. Stephen Mulhern’s show will start an hour early at 3pm, instead of its regular 4pm start.

There’s been reaction to the schedule change on X, formerly known as Twitter, recently. One person wrote in a post: “The Chase won’t be on Monday due the inauguration of the US president #TheChase.” Another said in a response to them: “And bumped deal or no deal to 3.00pm (at least a bit more notice this time around unlike the sudden change in December).” The Express reports that a third person said in a post: “The Chase is not coming on!! [fuming face emoji].”

However, fans can look forward to another episode of the Chase just a day later. The show is scheduled to return on Tuesday (January 21) from 5pm to 6pm. Deal or No Deal will air in its usual slot of 4pm to 5pm that same day.

The Chase first aired on ITV with its debut series back in 2009. Since then, there’s been more than a dozen series over the years and several spin-offs, including Beat the Chasers, which launched in 2020, have been introduced. As previously reported, an episode of the Chase that aired in September last year saw two contestants secure one of the show’s largest wins. Contestants Karen and Ian won £100,000 on the ITV show after taking on the Sinnerman in a series of quiz rounds.

Exclusive: Strictly winner Chris McCausland skips tour as fans question his absence

Strictly Come Dancing winner Chris McCausland has become the first BBC show champion to skip the programme’s UK tour in favour of his own career venture

Strictly Come Dancing’s Chris McCausland has become the first winner to skip the show’s UK tour, as he performed his own comedy show just miles away from the BBC dance show’s first night in Birmingham.

The 47-year-old comedian wowed audiences on Strictly Come Dancing as his pro partner, Dianne Buswell, helped him become the first blind contestant to win the Glitterball Trophy. While it is usual for the winner to then head the UK tour of Strictly, Chris has decided to continue his stand-up comedy tour rather than cancel dates to perform in the dance show. Chris has explained previously: “I’m afraid I will not be able to do the Strictly tour. My own tour was meant to be on the road in September and a lot of dates were moved to Jan and Feb to accommodate doing #Strictly. It’s unfortunate as it’s been so much fun, but my own dates can’t be moved for a second time.”

As Strictly opened its tour in Birmingham, Chris was just miles away in the West Midlands, performing at the Walsall Arena, where the audience was lapping up his humour. In exclusive photos, Chris was seen smiling and confidently performing his stand-up set while dressed in a grey suit and white T-shirt.

While Chris isn’t joining the tour, his dance partner Dianne is keeping a tradition going, which they started while starring on Strictly. Sharing a video on Instagram, Dianne is seen playing a game she used to play with Chris, ahead of the tour kick-off.

Chris would take different KitKats and get her to guess the flavour just by taste and smell. With Chris back on the road doing stand-up, Dianne stepped into Chris’ shoes and got her dad, Mark, to take the place of the guesser. Getting into the spirit, Chris jokingly said that she could expect to see him in court.

Unfortunately, Mark wasn’t as skilled at the game as Dianne and Chris, and it took multiple rounds of guessing and clues for him to figure out that the flavour was cookies and cream. Dianne offered all sorts of prizes, eventually landing on a flight back to Australia for her parents.

“TheChristmasspecial of guess the flavour ! Don’t worry production manager @chrismccauslandcomedy has given the all clear to go ahead with the episode without him ! Our special guest is the one and only MARK @mark.3802,” she captioned the video.

While Dianne joked in her caption that gamesmaster Chris had given permission for them to use his game, the comedian quickly snapped back in the comments: “Wow. I’m speaking to my lawyers. You must’ve really wanted him back on that flight to keep it going that long,” he joked alongside a laughing emoji.

“My dad makes me look like the Einstein of Kit Kat tasting!” Dianne responded.

With the first night of the Strictly tour under her belt, Dianna celebrated by posting a snap on her Instagram Story of her performing on stage. She captioned the snap: “Ok, that’s enough for tonight. Good night. Thank you to everybody who came to the show tonight and see you soon if you are coming along.”

JB Gill’s wife Chloe Tangney revealed their daughter Chiara was ‘turning the corner’ after rushing her to A&E while her JLS husband was away on the Strictly Come Dancing tour

JB Gill’s wife, Chloe Tangney, revealed that their young daughter had experienced a scary health crisis – but was on the mend.

JLS star JB, 38, shares two children with Chloe: son Ace, 10, and daughter, six. On Instagram, Chloe shared photos of Chiara both in hospital and recovering at home. In the first photo, the mother of two captured her daughter’s hand, covered in bandages and attached to a drip. Next, the young girl was captured in Bluey pyjamas on a sofa back at home, with a medic looking after her.

“When you get that gut feeling you can’t shift, this is your reminder to ALWAYS listen to it! I ended up taking Kiki to A&E a few days ago as I wasn’t happy with her eye, she didn’t have a stye she ended up having Periorbital Cellulitis and needing IV Anti-biotics straight away to get it under control,” Chloe revealed.

The former dancer added: “She’s finally on the mend and turning the corner, I can’t thank all the doctors and nurses in the Pedeatictis department at @kingscollegehospital and hospital at home team, Rachael & Kelly enough for being so lovely to her and looking after her your job is invaluable and we appreciate you all so much!

“Thank you to the NHS you really are living angels!! ‘#nhsheroes #appreciation #grateful.”

JB commented: “Baby girl… Love you,” while Rochelle Hume added: “Love you baby girl,” along with a red heart emoji.

Francesca Banjo shared: “Trust your gut always, Get well soon baby girl xx,” with Melvin Odoom writing: “Sending love and hugs”

Children’s TV show Bluey noticed Chiara’s pyjamas, and wished: “Sending Kiki big Heeler hugs.” Chloe replied: “Thank you Bluey. Getting this message has made her whole day.”While Chloe thankfully noticed her daughter’s health crisis, JB is away on the Strictly Come Dancing tour. In a recent interview with the Mail Online, he gushed over his wife and her understanding of his commitment to the show. He said: “To be honest, I probably have the best wife that you could have, for any contestant doing this show, because she comes from that world.

“And although she wasn’t a ballroom dancer, we both understand what goes into it. We know that it’s not easy and it’s going to be difficult. She gets it, she’s been on tours herself. She’s obviously had to partner with other people, that’s just part of the world. So she’s very excited for me.”

Chloe and JB met when she became a backup dancer for JLS, and started dating in 2008. After years of dating, the couple tied the knot in 2014 in a gorgeous ceremony, described by JB as “the best day of my life.” The ceremony was held on the Scottish Island of Bute, with JLS bandmates Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes and Oritse Williams all present among other stars and loved ones.
