Today marks a year since King Charles was admitted to hospital for a prostate procedure that days later saw him receive a cancer diagnosis – and a royal expert has set out how this will affect the rest of his reign

With a packed diary of engagements, 2025 looks to be a busy year ahead for King Charles.

Tomorrow he will be in Poland for a poignant ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz and in just a few month’s time will travel to Italy for a trip where he will meet the Pope. His duties as monarch also keep him busy as do his public engagements up and down the UK.

But a year ago today, things looked quite different as he went to hospital to be treated for a benign, enlarged prostate. News of his condition came days earlier, just hours after it was announced the Princess of Wales had undergone abdominal surgery.

Then just over a week later came the shock announcement from Buckingham Palace that the King had cancer – not prostate cancer but another undisclosed form. After taking a short time away from public-facing duties while he started treatment, he eventually resumed engagements and even completed a huge overseas tour to Australia and Samoa last autumn.

His cancer treatment continues as he enters into another busy period with more overseas travel and royal expert Jennie Bond believes it shows how the King, much like his daughter-in-law Kate, has had to find a new normal.

The former BBC royal correspondent told the Mirror: “A full year of treatment must certainly have taken its toll, but he’s shown that he is absolutely determined to get back to working as normally as possible.

“Like Catherine, the King is undoubtedly having to get used to a ‘new normal’. His doctors will continue to keep an extremely close eye on him and will do their best to warn him if he is taking on too much. Understandably, though, Charles is a man in a hurry. Cancer has changed the way he thought his reign would begin, and it will be hard to shake off the anxiety that living with cancer must bring.”

One person who has been a constant support for the King has undoubtedly been his wife Queen Camilla. She has been at his side during his Australia tour and will be with him during his trip to Italy in the spring.

And Jennie believes it is the Queen who has given Charles a “new perspective”. She added: “Since marrying Camilla I think Charles has had a new perspective on life: one in which the glass tends to be half full rather than half empty.

“And, cancer or not, I think that’s how he’ll approach the rest of his reign: full of optimism that he can achieve some of his goals and make a lasting impression in the role he waited so long to assume.”

Courtiers have said the King’s treatment “continues to move in the right direction” but changes to his schedule may be necessary if circumstances were to change. A source said: “The Australia and Samoa tour lifted his spirits, his mood and his recovery as did celebrations with his closest family over the Christmas period.”

The then Prince Charles christened Meghan as ‘Tungsten’ due to her being ‘tough’ and ‘unbending’ and while the nickname was unusual, Charles believed it was a compliment to her tenacity and it soon stuck.

Speaking about when Charles began using the nickname, a palace source told the Mail On Sunday’s Charlotte Griffiths in June 2018 : “Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy. It’s become a term of endearment.”

In Katie Nicholl’s 2022 book The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown, she revealed more details about the nickname. She claims that Charles found Meghan to be “resilient” and was able to hold her own. Charles labelled Meghan a “breakout star” as Meghan came across as “polished, passionate, and funny”.

An impressed Charles reportedly told friends: “She is so intelligent and so nice. She makes Harry happy. We could not like her more.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are said to be “upset and bruised” following a scathing Vanity Fair article published last week, with claims that “things aren’t good for them right now.”

The feature, titled ‘Inside Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Big Business Ambitions, 5 Years After Their Royal Exit’, scrutinised the Sussexes’ post-royal endeavours. It included allegations such as someone from Meghan’s circle exploring a potential post-divorce book deal, and assertions that Beyoncé declined an invitation to appear on Meghan’s former podcast Archetypes.

This has left the Royal couple feeling “upset and bruised,” according to Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield, who spoke to Sky News Australia.

Schofield revealed that the couple were particularly disturbed by the piece, stating: “It is my understanding that they are upset over it [and] I’m being told that things aren’t good for them right now, between Meghan’s show being postponed, which I’ve heard was Netflix’s idea, and just the idea that she has worked so hard to rebrand herself and here comes a very respected publication reiterating some of the nastiest claims about her.”

She added, “So I think they are bruised and they’re sitting back trying to figure out how to process going forward.”

Actor Louis Spencer is poised to inherit the childhood home of the late Princess Diana, Althorpe Estate in Northamptonshire, bypassing Princes William and Harry.

The hit ITV series returned earlier this month with a line-up of new celebrity contestants hiding behind elaborate costumes and masks.

The new contestants include Bush, Dressed Crab, Bear, Kingfisher, Pegasus, Pufferfish, Snail, Spag Bol, Tattoo, Teeth, Toad In The Hole and Wolf.

So far, Toad In The Hole was unmasked as Macy Gray, Pegasus was unmasked as Prue Leith, Spag Bol was unmasked as Kate Garraway and just last week Tattoo was unmasked as Carol Decker.

On Saturday night’s episode, which aired on 25 January, Bear, Bush, Dressed Crab, Kingfisher, Pufferfish, Snail, Teeth and Wolf battled it out on stage.

However, sadly, it was Teeth, who was eliminated and they were unmasked as Mel Giedroyc after going against fellow contestant Bear.

Taking to Twitter, now X, viewers were quick to share their surprise, admitting they had no idea it was Mel, 56, who is best known for hosting The Great British Bake Off when it was on BBC.

One person said: “Well that’s hilarious, I had absolutely no idea it was Mel #TheMaskedSinger”, a different account put: “Love Mel she’s such a lovely funny lady fair play to her! #TheMaskedSinger”, another wrote: “I am obsessed with Mel being Teeth #TheMaskedSinger” while a different viewer added: “mel giedroyc on the masked singer WHATTTT #TheMaskedSinger.”

Talking after the reveal, Mel said: “I’ll take Su Pollard! It’s so nice to see you guys. I love these teeth so much! I was very pleased with Alex Scott. Such a fun show, it’s impossible not to have fun on this show!”

Asked whether her close friend and co-star Sue Perkins had told her to do the show – Sue, 55, appeared on the show in 2021 as Dragon – Mel said: “She doesn’t know!”, adding: “No, because she didn’t tell me. She was a Dragon and she never told me. So right back at ya girlfriend.”

Mel admitted she only told her husband about the show, confessing: “He took it really seriously. The level of training he took me through at home!”

The Princess of Wales is said to be keen to “let bygones be bygones” as she issued an ‘unedited’ new photo of birthday boy Prince Louis, showing the young Prince grinning at the camera as he lies barefoot on a blanket on the grass.

The photo comes just weeks after the furore surrounding a Mother’s Day portrait which the princess admitted editing. Kate had to issue a public apology for it.

Royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop believes the release of the new picture shows that Kate wants to “forgive us for our scurrilous speculation.”

“Kensington Palace could easily have let this birthday go – Louis is only six, he’s not in line to inherit the throne, his mother is having cancer treatment, his father is trying to multi-task and the general public’s propensity towards conspiracy theories has hardly covered us in glory.” the expert told the Mirror.

Tessa Dunlop added: “But by choosing to share a photograph taken by Kate the Princess of Wales is messaging that She will forgive us and our scurrilous speculation if we quietly let her resume the role of royal photographer-in-chief.”

The historian claimed that the cheerful image shows William and Kate are back at what they do best – “posing as Britain’s first family”.

“The release of the photo is a sign that Kate, like the King, is managing cancer treatment alongside other duties and tasks,” according to the expert.

Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom country house on Sandringham Estate, is a royal residence filled with history. Here’s what to know.

By all tabloid accounts, it’s the case of the missing princess. Ever since Kensington Palace announced that Catherine, Princess of Wales, underwent abdominal surgery in January, royal watchers (not to mention conspiracy theorists) have been speculating as to her whereabouts.

Press reports indicate that Princess Kate is recuperating at Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, England, the country residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children.

We’re pushing aside the rumors, however, to do what we do best: talk about houses. Anmer Hall is a royal residence filled with history—and, of course, style. Let us begin, shall we? 

Where Is Anmer Hall?

Anmer Hall is in the quaint village of Anmer in Norfolk, a coastal county in northeastern England about a three-hour drive from London. The 10-bedroom Georgian pile, built in 1802, is part of Sandringham Estate, a sprawling 20,000-acre property dotted with churches, parishes, and country houses, that has been connected to the royals since 1862. The estate’s grand residence, Sandringham House, is the country bolthole of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, where royal Christmases are famously hosted. Anmer Hall is just a five-minute drive away.

While you can book tours of Sandringham House and even rent properties on the greater estate, Anmer Hall is a private family residence. The village of Anmer includes a church and quaint cottages, many of which were built in the early 20th century for Edward VII, according to an architectural guide to Norfolk by Nikolaus Pevsner and Bill Wilson. The U.K.’s National Office for Statistics states that Anmer parish had a population of about 250 in 2017.

What’s the History of Anmer Hall?

Anmer Hall was the seat of the Coldham family until Prince Albert Edward (aka the future Edward VII) purchased it in 1896 to be a part of the Sandringham Estate, Pevsner and Wilson note. The two-story house’s “charming” brick facade, made from red and brown brick, features 13 bays and dormer windows in the attic. The house underwent renovations in the years following Edward VII’s purchase.

Over the next century, the house was leased to numerous members of the British aristocracy, including the Duke and Duchess of Kent from 1972 to 1990, and Hugh van Cutsem, one of King Charles III’s best friends. Following the expiration of van Cutsem’s lease, the property was rented to timber company owner James Everett.

In 2013, two years after William and Kate’s marriage, it was rumored that the royal couple would be moving in. The pair had been renting a farmhouse in Anglesey, off the northwest coast of Wales, while Prince William worked as a helicopter pilot and while they were expecting their first child, Prince George. “[Anmer Hall] would seem to be an ideal choice in that it’s close to Grandma—but not too close,” former royal correspondent Michael Cole told the BBC. Later that year, it was confirmed that William and Kate would be moving into their new “baby bunker” with Prince George. But they wouldn’t physically move in until two years later, when Kate was expecting their second child, Princess Charlotte, to allow time for a $2 million refurbishment, which included a new roof, additional trees for privacy, and interior improvements.

In 2017—back in the halcyon days of the “fab four”—Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stayed with William and Kate at Anmer Hall, “because the sovereign still won’t permit unwed couples to sleep together under her roof Sandringham,” according to the book Notorious Royal Marriages by Leslie Carroll.

Today, the Prince and Princess of Wales spend most of their time at their two primary royal residences—one at Kensington Palace and the other at Adelaide Cottage on the grounds of Windsor Castle—but they use Anmer as a country escape. The family also spent the Covid lockdown at Anmer Hall.
