EastEnders star Shane Richie and Coleen Nolan’s marriage – from sweethearts to scandal

Coleen Nolan, who was married to the soap star for almost 10 years, was tormented by suspicions that EastEnders star Shane Richie was having an affair – until he confirmed her worst fears

Shane Richie and Coleen Nolan were one of the hottest showbiz couples of the Nineties, with a marriage that spanned almost the entire decade.

But behind the scenes, their once-idyllic romance crumbled under the weight of EastEnders star Shane’s infidelity, leaving Coleen heartbroken.

Both have spoken at length about the tumultuous and devastating ups and downs of their marriage, much like Shane’s soap character Alfie Moon’s on-off romance with Kat Slater.

Although Coleen and Shane have been over for over 20 years, Shane’s alter-ego is set to be reunited with Kat as he will return to Albert Square in autumn.

Here, Mirror Online explores Shane and Coleen’s romance and how love’s young dream turned to disaster…

    A fairytale beginning

Coleen and Shane met in 1986 and planned to wed in a big ceremony in 1990 but ended up calling it off and eloping to Florida amid fears their plans had become over the top.

Rex)“Shane pulled me to one side and said, ‘I can’t do this. I feel like we’re just being told to turn up on the day and it’s nothing to do with us’ so we cancelled it all and eloped and didn’t tell anybody,” said Coleen on Loose Women.

They went on to welcome two children: sons Jake, 28, and Shane Jr, 31, and had a blessing at a church when Coleen’s father fell ill a few years later.

The first hints of a problem

In an extract from her 2009 autobiography, published exclusively in the Mirror, Coleen wrote she had an inkling something was amiss when she attended an industry party for one of Shane’s musicals in 1996 and spied a brunette woman in the room.

“At the after-show party I can distinctly remember examining this one girl. There were loads of people there but she just stood out. She had really long dark hair and was wearing a skin-tight white dress,” recalled Coleen.

“Well, it must have been female intuition because that turned out to be the girl Shane had an affair with.”

In his own autobiography, Rags to Riches, Shane admitted cheating on Coleen with the dancer and actress in question, Claire Taylor.

“I started to think, ‘Why?’” she said, admitting her fears became an obsession.

“I did trust my gut so many times. It became all consuming,” she added. “It was 24 hours.”

    In a “happier place” afterwards

The couple eventually split in 1999, and Coleen went on to marry musician Ray Fensome and have daughter Ciara, 19, but they divorced in 2018.

Coleen has since found love once more with Michael Jones after meeting on Tinder. The pair hit it off as their first date lasted six hours.

Shane married actress Christie Goddard in 2007 and they have three children – Mackenzie Blue, 14, Lolita Bell, 12, and Romani-Skye Angel Shelley, nine.

And in 2012, Coleen told the Daily Star her divorce from Shane brought her peace.

“I’m in a much happier place now than when I was married to Shane – I don’t have to worry about what he gets up to any more,” she said.

“You forgive something like that but you don’t ever forget.”

And for Shane’s part, he admitted that his actions were beyond the pale.

He told The Guardian of the media coverage: “I was crucified, quite rightly. There’s no excuse for a bloke cheating on his wife, much as I try to find one. What I did to Coleen was unforgivable and I could never apologise enough.”

In the same chat, Shane also credited Coleen for keeping things amicable between them. Their divorce was settled out of court and Shane later attended the christening of her third child.

“I wish I could take credit for it, but Coleen instigated most of that. The only people who lost out were the lawyers. They were gutted,” he said.

Loose Women’s Denise Welch stuns co-stars as she reveals her real name

The Loose Women panel were surprised on Thursday, as they realised ‘Denise’ wasn’t co-star Denise Welch’s full name

Loose Women star Denise Welch left her co-stars in disbelief on Thursday’s show, when she revealed what her real name was.

Charlene White and Frankie Bridge couldn’t believe ‘Denise’ wasn’t actually her first name, as Denise dropped the news.

During a segment about baby names and which parent had the final say when choosing a name for their child, Denise confessed her real name has caused her problems her whole life.

She confirmed her real name was Jacqueline Denise Welch, but that she’d always been called Denise since she was a child.

Speaking to her co-stars, including Jane Moore, the actress and TV star confessed it’s “annoying” effectively having two different names.

Despite everyone knowing her as Denise Welch, the star explained how this was not the name given to her when she was born, despite it being the name she goes by.

She explained: “My name… to be honest with the boys’ names, we both liked Max or Matthew, that was fine, he’s now Matty.

“And then Louis it’s just a name I’ve always loved, because mum and dad had a friend called Louis and their dad was very happy with that.”

She then surprised her co-stars, as she said: “But with me, I’m Jacqueline Denise.”

Frankie went: “Oh…” as a surprised Charlene asked: “So is Denise not your first name?”

Denise went on: “No, but I was never brought up as Jacquline. So my mother, according to dad, was going through a French phase and loved the idea of Jacqueline Denise.

“She’d been there once on a ferry and she thought Jacqueline Denise flowed better than Denise Jacqueline, which is so annoying because I’ve been brought up with that.”

Writing on her Instagram Stories, the star continued to explain: “It’s all the same stones but we moved them around abit [sic] so it was more dainty on my fingers.”

Stacey and Joe first met back in Australia thanks to reality TV show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

Strictly’s Pete Wicks reveals ‘wild’ impact show has had on him ahead of live dance

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Pete Wicks has teased a ‘wild’ impact that competing on the new series of the BBC show has had on his lifestyle ahead of his next routine

Reality TV star Pete Wicks has teased the “wild” impact that Strictly Come Dancing’s had on his lifestyle.

Pete, 36, has been paired up with professional dancer Jowita Przystał, 30, for the latest series of the BBC show. The former the Only Way is Essex cast member took to the dancefloor with Jowita for their first routine together last weekend, having performed a paso doble to the Prodigy’s song Breathe.

They are due to perform an American smooth in the second live show over the weekend. It’s been announced that the upcoming routine will be set to the song I Had Some Help, released by Post Malone and featuring Morgan Wallen.

Ahead of the routine, Pete – who has prompted rumours that he could be “in love” with his dance partner -shared an update on the experience with his followers on his Instagram Story. The contestant – who has previously teased that he used to have a “party boy life” some years – shared his surprise to be in bed by 9.30pm on a Friday night now, with him getting some rest ahead of being in the TV studio on Saturday.

He wrote in a post on the platform on Friday night: “In bed by 9.30 on a Friday. Wild.” Pete accompanied the message to his fans in the evening with a melting face emoji. He had teased just hours earlier in a previous post on social media that there’s just “one more sleep” until his return to the dancefloor.

Pete and Jowita were on the lower end of the leaderboard following the first live show of the series. It was announced to fans that he had been paired up with Jowita the week prior in Strictly’s pre-recorded launch episode.

Following the launch, Pete and Jowita addressed being paired up for the contest. She wrote in a post at the time: “I’m gonna celebrate the 20th anniversary of [Strictly] with this superstar. I’m so excited to share that experience with you.” Pete teased in response in the comments section: “Couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I’m sorry in advance.”

Pete is Jowita’s third celebrity partner on Strictly following her debut on the BBC show in 2021. She didn’t have a partner during her first series but then won in 2022 with presenter Hamza Yassin, before being partnered with cyclist Jody Cundy last year.

Loose Women’s Coleen Nolan ‘grim’ bed sheet confession disgusts Brenda Edwards

Coleen Nolan left her Loose Women colleague Brenda Edwards screwing up her face on live TV after she revealed how often she changed her bed sheets

Brenda Edwards was disgusted by her Loose Women colleague Coleen Nolan ‘s grim bed confession, on Tuesday’s episode of the ITV panel show.

Coleen, 57, left Brenda screwing up her face after admitting how often she changes her bedsheets.

From Brenda’s reaction, it would seem that she might not take up an offer of a sleepover any time soon.

It may have been a shortened version of the show, as ITV covered the horse racing at Glorious Goodwood, but in the 30 minutes they had to share their thoughts, Coleen ensured that the show was talked about, even if not for the most ‘glorious’ of reasons.

Kaye Adams was in the hotseat, looking to keep the chat flowing between Coleen, Brenda and fellow panelist, Janet Street Porter.

The talk soon turned to the subject of changing sheets on beds.

The question was: “Do you change the sheets for guests?”

Kaye began the response, said: “If they’ve only stayed for a night and they then go…”

Coleen replied: “So, if my sister comes to stay and then the next night my friend is coming to stay, I don’t change the sheets.”

While Kaye seemed to be on the same page when it came to changing bed sheets, Brenda was clearly horrified.

As she frowned in disgust, Kaye asked her: “Why you looking so horrified?”

With Janet agreeing with Brenda, she said: “If anyone comes to stay, as soon as they come out of that bed, change that sheet! Get that sheet! If you’ve only got one sheet, get that sheet in the washer and dryer the same day”

Brenda added: “I don’t want no skin cells rubbing on me, I don’t care if it’s a man, woman, boy or child!”

Brenda was not alone with her thoughts on bed sheets, with viewers in also sharing their views on Twitter.

Loose Women star says she’s ‘heartbroken’ over Beyoncé’s ‘deeply offensive’ lyrics

TV presenter Sophie Morgan – who is disabled – has slammed Beyoncé for using a derogatory term in a song on her new Renaissance album – just weeks after Lizzo did the same

Loose Women presenter Sophie Morgan has slammed Beyoncé for using “deeply offensive” lyrics in a song – just weeks after Lizzo did the same.

The telly star, who was left paralysed from the chest down following a car crash, says she was heartbroken after discovering the word in the song Heated.

Beyoncé used the derogatory term, that has often been used to demean people with cerebral palsy, just weeks after Lizzo apologised for using the same word in her song GRRRLS.

Her publicist told the BBC that the word, which can have different connotations across the pond, was “not used intentionally in a harmful way”.

The Lemonade chart-topper’s team also said that the word would be “replaced in the lyrics”.

Talking to the Loose Women panel this afternoon, Sophie said: “The word is a medical phrase but it basically got turned into an offensive term and so disabled people said we want to stop using it.

“So, the word is now what we call an ableist slur. It’s something that we fight very hard to have removed from everyday lexicon.”

Sophie, who was paralysed in a car crash when she was just 18-years-old and relies on a wheelchair, said that this latest incident is “particularly frustrating”.

She added: “When we see pop stars like Beyoncé using [the word], it is heart-breaking for lots of different reasons.

“But one of the reasons it’s particularly frustrating is that only six weeks ago another popstar, Lizzo, used the same term and it had a huge backlash.

“She very gracefully just said ‘right I get it sorry I didn’t realise I caused offence – I don’t want to offend anybody’ and she changed it.

“So all the disability advocates and the campaigners were like ‘thank you’, ‘we don’t need to cancel anybody, there’s no need for that, this is about learning and education’.

“We all hoped that this would be an example of a way in which somebody can taught the ways in which they offended someone and that they could learn from it and globally we can have a conversation that will enable us to therefore say look what Lizzo did, it won’t happen again.

“We all thought there was change made and now less than two months later we’ve got Beyoncé, who is so influential, doing exactly the same thing.”

Sophie and the panel, made up of Ruth Langsford, Coleen Nolan and Gloria Hunniford, discussed how the popstar’s team seemingly missed the Lizzo news.

“It almost feels like we have a step forward with Lizzo and five steps back or ten steps back with Beyoncé and it’s just a little bit demoralising.

“Even the concept of ableism is something we still need to educate people on and so it feels like a constant fight and a constant struggle to be heard.

“It is important to have disabled people in your team, you don’t have to, to be make sure you don’t slip up, but it will mean that these mistakes don’t get made.

“They are deeply offensive and they set back the agenda so far. We thought that we learnt a lesson with Lizzo, but unfortunately it looks like we haven’t.”

Nicola Bulley’s partner in tears as he breaks silence on horror messages and kids’ plea for ‘mummy’

The partner of Nicola Bulley has described the horrific messages he received as police searched for his missing partner in January last year

Nicola Bulley’s partner has spoken out for the first time, sharing the horrifying messages he received from strangers and their children’s heartbreaking plea for their mum.

In his tearful first interview, Paul Ansell spoke about what it was really like during the tragic search for Nicola 18 months ago. Her at the end of January last year led to a 23 day police search after Paul had alerted police to her being missing. What followed was huge media attention and coverage on social media. Sadly, her body was found in the River Wyre on February 19, about a mile from where she vanished.

Now, a new BBC documentary looks back on what happened during the days of the search and the frenzy of interest on social media which took its toll on Nicola’s family. Paul describes the media and social media attention as initially being a good thing. However, he admits it soon started to feel like they were “poking a monster”.

He told the documentary: “I was getting direct messages from people that I’ve never met – they don’t know me, they don’t know us, they don’t know Nikki.”

He said the family felt they were unable to respond to online message as they feared a reply would be reposted or taken out of context. Paul described he felt “silenced” at the situation.

“On top of the trauma of the nightmare that we’re in, to then think that all these horrendous things are being said about me towards Nikki – everyone has a limit.”

“I was getting direct messages from people that I’ve never met. They don’t know me, they don’t know us, they don’t know Nikki. They know nothing about us,” he added. “Just messages like ‘you b******’. ‘We know what you did’. ‘You know you can’t hide Paul’, that kind of stuff. “There was some that I felt like replying to, but then if you reply to that, they’ll just screenshot your reply, if that’ll end up on social media. And so you’re literally silenced, and you can’t do anything about it.”

Paul realised that Nicola was missing on the Friday morning after she took their two children to school with their family dog Willow. Initially, he hadn’t been worried but when the children’s school phoned him at 10.30am to say that someone had found their dog and Nicola’s phone by a bench, he knew “something wasn’t right here”.

“I mean, that’s not a normal phone call to get,” he explains. “She would never have left Willow.” He added: “It’s where you feel like your legs have gone. In a situation like that, your mind is going absolutely crazy. And so I rang the police as I was driving.”

Reliving the phone call she received from Paul at her desk, Nicola’s sister Louise Cunningham describes him as being “panicky and frantic”. She says: “He was like, ‘something’s happened, something strange has happened’.”

The search had a heartbreaking impact on the couple’s children, with Nicola’s mum Dorothy recalling an incredibly sad conversation with one of her grandchildren. She says: “One morning, I got up. The youngest one, she says: ‘Cold, isn’t it, Nanny?’ She said: ‘I hope mummy’s not cold and hungry’.”

“In the morning the hope would be strong. It used to go dark at like 4pm. It used to get to about 3pm and then I’d start panicking that I knew it would start going dark in an hour. So we had an hour to find her. And then obviously I’d have the girls. The first they’d do when they came out of school was run over and say ‘have we found mummy?”

A coroner recorded Nicola’s death as accidental last year. They said she had fallen into the river and suffered “cold water shock”, adding there was “no evidence” to suggest suicide.

Phillip Schofield mocks Holly Willoughby’s infamous This Morning words in TV comeback

Phillip Schofield is back on TV in new Channel 5 series and he couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at former best pal Holly Willoughby

Phillip Schofield puts the boot into former best friend Holly Willoughby by mocking her famous This Morning ‘OK’ intro after he left.

Holly asked viewers ‘Firstly, are you OK?’ In the light of Schofield’s decision to quit the daytime show. On his new Channel 5 programme Schofield makes it clear there is no love lost between the pair these days. Sitting down for BBQ with his wife and two daughters with a glint in his eye, Schofield says: “If you’re okay, then we’re okay and I’m okay. Are you okay?”

It’s a clear sign of him mocking someone who was seen as his on-screen wife for many years, but who he is no longer friends with. And it is not the only time in the opening episode he appears to put the boot into his old employers and possibly other hosts like Holly. Biting on a piece of fruit he says: “It’s going through an angry bitter stage…like some television presenters haha.”

Schofield described leaving ITV as the “biggest grenade going off in your life”. The decision came after it emerged he had been lying for several years about an affair with a younger male staff member on This Morning. He described it as “unwise but not illegal” and quit in May 2023. He left saying “This Morning itself has become the story” before quitting ITV all together a week later.

Schofield is full of praise for his daughters Ruby and Molly who he says are the reason he is still here having had suicidal thoughts. Even after his affair he also remains close to his wife Stephanie and he continues to wear his wedding ring when he heads off to the tropical island off the coast of Madagascar for Phillip Schofield: Cast Away.

Daughter Molly says everything that has happened has brought the family “closer”. She added: “We’ve seen him at his lowest times, but I’ve been so proud of him, and as a daughter to see the love that people had for him that when it’s taken away it’s just heartbreaking.”

She adds: “I never thought it would have gone the way it has but to have my parents still best friends…Im the luckiest person ever” Schofield, who is still wearing his wedding ring on the show, says: “Some families can adapt, some families can’t. Without them I wouldn’t be here. I still have the love of my family. Never wavered.”

Viewers will also hear from Schofield’s wife Stephanie who has seemingly stayed friends with him throughout everything. Stephanie said: “What people don’t realise if that they batter you but then there are other people affected.” She adds: “There’s no question by doing this you’re popping your head back up above the parapet for the very few horrid people that there are out there.”

The first episode begins with Schofield being asked why he wants to take on the challenge of being stuck on a deserted island alone, having to gather his own food, to which he responds: “I think there’d be an awful lot of people that hope I never come back.” He added that This Morning was a “joy” and a “privilege”, and he understands how he has been “lucky” during his more than four decades of TV career, until it came to an end in 2023.”When it came to a sudden very abrupt end, you know one minute you’re there and then the next minute you’re gone, you know what it feels like to be cancelled,” he also said. “It’s like the biggest grenade going off in your life, and you know you let people down, you’ve let yourself down, and it was unwise and (an) unprofessional thing to do, I will be forever sorry, I screwed up, I made a mistake, and I hurt the people around me.”

  • Loose Women’s Carol McGiffin confuses fans as she shows off ‘face full of fillers’

Loose Women’s Carol McGiffin confuses fans as she shows off ‘face full of fillers’

There was a discussion on Loose Women today in which the panelists on the ITV show discussed non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as lip fillers, amid calls for more regulation

Carol McGiffin made fans do a double take as she showed what her face would look like with a face full of fillers on Loose Women on Thursday.

The panellist, 62, looked dramatically different as she displayed a plump pout and cheeks in the selfie while the panel discussed whether people should need a prescription for lip fillers, amid calls from some MPs for there to be more regulation over them.

Turning to the popular Instagram face filter, Carol admitted she found the look “disturbing” as she shared her own experience with going under the knife with the panel.

She said: “I’ve had a facelift as everybody knows [but] I haven’t had all of that work done that was in [that picture]. That is a very, very disturbing look for me.”

Carol added: “It’s an app or a filter […] that my friend used when he came over to stay to see what I would look like if I went too far.” She then shared her thoughts on the topic.

The television host said that it’s “worrying” young people aspire to look that way, though suggested that a requirement for a prescription might not be the best way to address such issues.

“There should be definitely more regulation. I think there should be an age limit [and] consultations for people to make sure they haven’t got any dysmorphia,” she said.

ITV)Carol said there’s a “lifelong cost” associated with investing in cosmetic procedures to stay youthful, expressing concern over what happens if you’re unable to do so.

She asked: “When you can’t afford that cost anymore what happens to your mental health if you look in the mirror and see a wrinkle? It’s really quite worrying actually.”

The presenter wasn’t alone in worrying over such cosmetic procedures, with Charlene White, 42, sharing concern over young people feeling pressured to have them.

The discussion also saw Denise Welch, 64, ask Katie Piper, 38, if she thinks people who have cosmetic procedures are “superficial” – due to having reconstructive surgery herself.

ITV)Katie replied: “Short answer is no I don’t. […] I think it’s such a complex thing.” She later stated that she agrees that there should be more regulations for procedures like fillers.

It comes after the Health and Social Care Committee said dermal fillers should be made prescription-only, in line with Botox, and proposed minimum training standards.

It is already against the law in England for anyone to inject Botox or fillers for “cosmetic purposes” to a person who is under the age of 18. Campaigners want further regulation.

A government spokesperson told The Mirror: “We brought forward an amendment to the Health and Care Act 2022, which gives the Health and Social Care Secretary the power to bring into force a national licensing scheme in England for non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including dermal fillers, to ensure consistent standards are met.

“The licensing scheme will make it an offence for anyone in England to carry out specified non-surgical procedures without a license and we will set out further details in due course.

“The UK’s regulatory body on medicines and healthcare products (MHRA) is responsible for the regulation of medical devices and intends to bring in more stringent rules for certain aesthetic and non-medical products – including dermal fillers – under the UK medical devices regulations.”

  • Meghan Markle’s email rule speaks volumes on how she really treats staff

Meghan Markle’s email rule speaks volumes on how she really treats staff

Both current and former staff working for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been speaking out about what it is really like to work for the couple – and also revealed a detail about the emails that Meghan sends

Staff working for Meghan Markle have revealed a detail about the emails she sends to them as a row has erupted about what it is like to work for her and Prince Harry.

Since moving to the US four years ago, the pair have earned a reputation for having a high staff turnover at their Archewell organisation. And just last week, there were allegations that Meghan “belittles people” and “doesn’t take advice” with claims it has earned her the nickname “Duchess Difficult”.

The allegations were made in industry bible, the Hollywood Reporter, with its co-editor-in-chief saying the claims came from a very high-up source who works for the couple. However, several current and former staffers have also spoken out of their experiences of working at Archewell and hit back against the claims, with one letting slip something they say Meghan includes on every email she sends.

It comes after one big claim made by the Hollywood Reporter in their damning piece on Meghan is that she fires off “angry emails at 5am to employees”. However, one unnamed current employee told US Weekly they’ve never heard Meghan yell and that she “gives clear direction and is solution-oriented”. They also claim that Meghan’s email signature reads: “My working day may not be your working day. Please do not feel obliged to reply to this email outside your normal working hours” – proof, they feel, that she wasn’t demanding.

One of the most notable people to also speak out in US Weekly is Josh Kettler, who lasted just three months in the role of Harry’s chief of staff before his departure last month.

Eyebrows were raised when the seasoned public relations professional left his role after just weeks after he was reportedly hired to “guide him [Harry] through his next phase”. News of him stepping down came on the eve of Harry and Meghan’s high-profile trip to Colombia.

Mr Kettler, who had previously been chief of staff and head of strategic partnerships at the communication platform Cognixion, revealed that he was “warmly welcomed” by both of them and their Archewell team. He added: “They are dedicated and hardworking. It was impressive to witness.”

Another staff member who also talked to the magazine is the couple’s current global press secretary Ashley Hansen, who says her bosses could not be more supportive. She explains that she was forced to take time off work following a serious surgery – and was afterwards inundated with supportive phone calls, care packages and flowers from Meghan.

She said: “When I told them, I was met with the kind of concern and care a parent would express if it were their own child.” She added: “Most profoundly to me, Meghan would personally reach out to my husband daily to make sure that we both were OK and had support. It meant so much to him and even more to me. You don’t realise how much that kind of kindness and thought means until you need it.”

Meanwhile, others say they’ve been “dumbfounded” by the latest “Duchess Difficult” claims with one anonymous staff telling the magazine: “This is the first company I’ve worked [where I] liked every person. Harry and Meghan picked the best of the best from every field and watered the seeds for them to flourish. We have an enormous microscope on us. But good things are happening.”
