Exclusive: Loose Women’s Kaye Adams breaks silence on Strictly Come Dancing’s impact on mental health

Loose Women star Kaye Adams became the first contestant to leave Strictly Come Dancing, when she took part in the show two years ago.

After finding herself in the dreaded dance-off, Loose Women star Kaye Adams became the first contestant to leave Strictly Come Dancing, when she took part in the show two years ago.

But while she has no regrets about her experience, the presenter admits that it has put her off signing up for any similar shows in the future.

“I just don’t know if I’m desperate to be judged again in that way,” Kaye reflects. “You could go in the jungle, you could try your level best, do everything, but you’re voted out first for whatever reason and you just feel like a loser. I don’t think I need that in my life.”

Kaye entered Strictly in 2022, dancing with Kai Widdrington. The BBC1 show has come under fire recently with allegations of bullying and complaints of abusive behaviour. But while Kaye acknowledges she found her Strictly experience bruising, she blames her own naivety, not the show and certainly not dance partner Kai.

“Kai was an absolute gentleman from start to finish. I was so pleased to be paired with him and I couldn’t have asked any more of him,” she says firmly.

“I met some wonderful people on Strictly. That was the joy of it. But it is a tough show, which is very difficult for viewers to understand, because of course it just looks like the most enormous fun and sparkles and glitter.

“It is all of that, but emotionally you do have to put yourself on the line. That’s nobody’s fault, but that’s what it requires. Some people sail through that and respond to it in the most positive way and for other people it can be a bit destabilising. I found it a bit destabilising. But that’s me, that’s not the show or the way I was treated.”

Kaye, who danced a Tango and a Charleston, said at the time that she hoped Strictly would turn her into the sort of person who would jump up to dance at a wedding. But she confesses that hasn’t happened.

“I haven’t undergone some amazing transformation – I’m still the same old klutz that I was ten, twenty or thirty years ago,” she laughs. “I guess what was just accentuated for me on Strictly was that I am a bit uptight about dancing in public.

“In retrospect, it was probably naïve to think that you would go on a television show, where you are exposed to a massive audience, and suddenly you would turn into a different personality. That was a ridiculous idea and so it proved to be, but I’m not in therapy, it’s all good!”

Yet while Kaye won’t be lining up to take part in I’m a Celebrity, there is one show she would still love to try. “Celebrity Race Across the World is great,” she enthuses. “With that show there isn’t a vote – you either are or you aren’t the loser, so I’d love to do that.

“Especially if I could do it with one of my kids, because I think I’d win. Well, they would win and I would just go along for the ride!”

Kaye, 61, lives in Glasgow with her tennis coach partner Ian and the couple have two daughters, Charly, 22 and Bonnie, 17. She hosts a daily show on BBC Radio Scotland, and has her own successful podcast How to be 60, but is best known as one of the main presenters on the ITV lunchtime chat show Loose Women.

The show marks its 25th anniversary next month and Kaye has been with it from the start having anchored the very first show in 1999. She was 36 at the time and having been told the job would just be for a month admits she could never have imagined it lasting so long.

“God no,” she exclaims. It was a very untested format – so, it’s four women. Right ok, what do we do? Well, you just sit and talk for an hour. We were thinking: ‘really? well, what do we talk about?’

“It just felt very woolly, so I certainly wasn’t putting any great store by it and we had absolutely no notion of how it would go down with the audience – we were completely aware that it might just divebomb.”

Over the years, the show has won countless awards and received a much respected BAFTA nomination earlier this year. Much has been made of backstage rows between the presenters, but Kaye insists that incidents have been greatly exaggerated. “Whether somebody works in an office or a factory and there’s a bunch of work colleagues, you will see a very similar relationship dynamic as the one that exists at Loose Women,” she explains.

“There are the ones that you click with, that you’re desperate to go for coffee with and there are the ones that you smile at and you think are nice, but you’re not that close. There’s absolutely no difference.

“Loose Women has been an enormously positive influence on my life and I’ve made some great friendships – Nadia (Sawalha) and Jane (Moore) are both good friends, who I see outside of the show.”

The panellists are known for speaking their minds and occasionally regretting what they say and while Kaye is usually careful with her words, she confesses she did cause upset in one of her early shows.

“I found the early days of motherhood really quite difficult and I obviously shared that on the programme,” she recalls.

“These things tend to get picked up and then exist on the internet forever, so when Charly was younger, she must have discovered them and she said: ‘did you really hate motherhood?’

BBC)“I felt awful. We discussed it and I explained that wasn’t the case, but it was a little bit of a reminder that you have to be careful.”

Away from Loose Women Kaye’s passion is her How to be 60 podcast, which has seen her interview a host of big-name stars about their thoughts on turning 60.

“It’s a handmade, low-budget production, recorded in this little attic in my house, but it’s very personal to me,” she smiles.

“Society talks a lot now about midlife and menopause and I think that is fantastic, but I think once you become post-menopausal and into your late 50s, you go into the wilderness a little bit in terms of the public conversation.

“There are a lot of people, both men and women, who actually are getting to that stage of life and thinking they’ve got an awful lot of living to do. They want to get reward and value out of these years and not just drift into the horizon and I’m really happy to be part of that conversation.”

As for her own future, Kaye is unsure how retirement will feature in her plans. “If my life isn’t as busy, I wonder if it will all feel a bit aimless,” she says candidly.

“I’m not at that stage at the moment, but I can see that might come, so I am already planning what to do, what activities I might take up and what new friends I might make, whether they like it or not!

“My partner Ian lives and breathes tennis and he would live in Spain at least for the winter. It would be a huge thing and I am kind of set in my ways, but it’s starting to make me think – could we do that, should we do that?

“Possibilities come up and you either just keep your head down and plough on, or you say: ‘this is an opportunity to do things that I’ve never done before and switch things up a little bit.’”

As for work, Kaye insists she is not as ambitious as she was when she first bounded on to the Loose Women stage 25 years ago. “I’m not as competitive as I was. People laugh when I say this, but I have mellowed!” she smiles.

“It’s not that I’ve completely given up the ghost. But having worked in television for as long as I have, I have come to realise that the most talented, successful and popular people in the world of entertainment aren’t necessarily the people that I would want to spend an evening with. Over time it’s sunk in that being the top of the tree in this very artificial world, doesn’t actually mean that much.”

Daisy May Cooper reveals Denise Welch gave her ‘the best life-changing’ advice

Daisy May Cooper has opened up about her life in a new interview and shared the best piece of advice she’s ever been given – and it came from Loose Women legend Denise Welch

Daisy May Copper has revealed how Denise Welch once delivered the best advice she has ever received.

The This Country creator and star, who welcomed her third child into the world earlier this year, revealed all about her daily life in a brand new interview over the weekend – admitting an extreme diet once left her “smelling like rotting flesh”.

In the candid chat, Daisy, 38, revealed how her relationship with ex-husband Will Weston has changed since their divorce and how they co-parent her two eldest children. She also confessed to Facebook stalking boyfriend Anthony Huggins’ ex-girlfriend.

But it was when The Sunday Times asked the Never Mind the Buzzcocks team captain to share some pearls of wisdom that Daisy revealed Denise’s wisdom. “Best advice given?” Daisy answered with: “From Denise Welch, who said stopping drinking is life-changing.”

Denise has been open and honest about her battle with alcohol prior to getting sober over a decade ago. Celebrating 11 years booze-free in April 2023, Denise, 66, shared a side-by-side photo of herself on Twitter (X), showing her before and after her last drink, to mark the anniversary.

The Loose Women panellist also thanked her husband Lincoln for his support in her journey, who himself got sober alongside her. “11 yrs sober today! ! ” she captioned the picture. “My greatest achievement apart from Matty and Louis. Thank you to my husband @LincolnTownley for everything [red love hearty emoji]”

Denise had previously spoken about how alcohol “ruined [her] life for 15 years” before she became sober. She discussed her struggles with alcoholism and its impact on life, relationships, and mental health. Denise tweeted: “Alcohol is the most dangerous drug because it’s legal. Violence is fuelled by it. In most domestic abuse incidents alcohol is a major contributor. It is a major cause of anxiety and depression and yet we celebrate it everywhere. It ruined my life for 15 yrs.”

The former Coronation Street star once confided in the Mirror about the immense benefits she’s found in sobriety, so much so that going back to alcohol just isn’t appealing to her now. “I don’t have temptation any more because of what sobriety has given us,” she shared with a sense of pride, “Our careers and our families. That is so much more important. It’s not something we miss anymore.”In one of her memoirs, Denise explained how she is a retired party animal following her decision to get sober. “I can’t even tell you how un-party animal I am,” she penned. “I am happiest at home with my husband, watching true crime on television with a takeaway. That is my dream.”

Loose Women’s Nadia Sawalha calls out co-star for rude habit – ‘you’ve got a cheek’

loose Women star Nadia Sawalha got into a heated debate with her co-star as Frankie Bridge ‘intervened’ in the argument between the two friends

Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha sparked a debate on a recent episode of the show when she called a co-star out for their “rude” habit.

Nadia was joined by show host Kaye Adams, alongside fellow panelists GK Barry and Frankie Bridge as the group began a discussion about using mobile phones being banned from restaurants on Thursday, September 5. As the debate got underway the women chatted about a bistro that banned the use of mobile phones a year ago.

The move has reportedly led to an increase in diners ordering from the dessert menu in order to extend their stay and continue their conversations. As they started mulling the subject over GK Barry explained that having her phone is “a security thing”

Frankie Bridge pretended to restrain the pair
She said: “God forbid if someone took my phone, because I just feel like if something bad happens, at least my phone’s there and I’ll know straight away. It’s a security thing for me.”

Nadia, 59, then shared her opinion on the matter as she joined the chat. She said: “The thing is, I think where it goes wrong is we think it will make us less anxious but actually it’s anxiety that’s making us have the phone there.”

Kaye, 61, then swiftly replied that she had “got a cheek” as she stated that Nadia has “always got your bloomin’ phone!” Nadia, was not impressed by the outburst as she retorted: “Kaye Adams – do not, do not. Can we phone Jane? She’s in Barcelona.”

Nadia then pointed her finger at Kaye as she admitted she was “100% a phone addict”, but called out her co-star for her behaviour too. “100% I admit it – but you have a problem in restaurants with your phone. When we’re having dinner, me and Jane never have our phone out.”

Nadia called Kaye out on her behaviourSeeing the drama unfolding between the pair The Saturdays star Frankie joked as she pretended to intervene in the argument: “Hold her back, hold her back” reaching towards Kaye, who told Nadia: “You’ve got a cheek.”

Nadia then told everyone how when she and Kaye appeared on The Celebrity Circle in 2021 Kaye was “foaming at the mouth” when they took her phone away from her for seven days. Kaye then joked in response: “She’s imagining that. Call my lawyer, this is absolutely terrible.”

Popular Loose Woman Jane McDonald recently revealed that she is making a comeback to the panel after a decade-long break. “Looking forward to joining the Loose Women next Friday 6th September for a good gossip about everything I’ve got coming up!!,” she wrote in a social media post.

Ruth Langsford caught in painful moment over ship comment as Eamonn Holmes boards one

Ruth Langsford was reminded of her ex-husband Eamonn Holmes’ romantic trip with new girlfriend Katie Alexander thanks to Shayne Ward’s appearance on Loose Women on Monday

Ruth Langsford received an awkward reminder of Eamonn Holmes’ holiday on Loose Women thanks to guest Shayne Ward.

The Strictly Come Dancing star joined the ITV show on Monday with Ruth at the helm after GB News host Eamonn, 64, was spotted jetting off on a luxury cruise with new girlfriend Katie Alexander, 42. The new couple made their relationship public over the weekend as they embarked a cruise at Barcelona port.

Ruth, who was married to Eamonn for 14 years before they announced their split earlier this year, returned to ITV on Monday as she hosted Loose Women with Linda Robson, Judi Love and Brenda Edwards. Shayne Ward joined the studio to talk about his new Strictly role, but it wasn’t long before he suffered a huge blunder when talking about his upcoming TV projects.

Shayne stars in Channel 5 show The Good Ship Murder – which is set on a cruise ship – and revealed the series has been renewed for two further series and a Christmas special. The former Coronation Street star excitingly asked the studio audience: “Who loves being on a cruise?” As Ruth looked on before wrapping up the interview.

There’s no suggestion of any overlap between Eamonn’s relationships with Ruth and Katie although it has been reported the former This Morning stars’ marriage came to an end after Ruth was “devastated” to find messages from another woman on Eamonn’s laptop.

Eamonn Holmes recently went public with his new relationship with Katie Alexander after being spotted jetting off on a cruise following the breakdown of his marriage to Ruth Langsford

Eamonn, who announced his separation from his wife of 14 years in May, has reportedly been trying to limit his dates with Katie prior to their romantic getaway. “Katie wants the world to see they’re a couple but Eamonn is keeping things low-key at the moment,” a source told Women’s Own.

“Eamonn is excited about their relationship but he wants to remain respectful by not going public yet.” Another source echoed: “Katie just wants to get it over and done with but Eamonn is less keen because he doesn’t want to hurt Ruth’s feelings.”

Eamonn Holmes, 64, moving in with girlfriend, 42, four months after Ruth Langsford split

Eamonn Holmes is reportedly set to move in with girlfriend Katie Alexander just four months after splitting from his wife of 14 years Ruth Langsford

Eamonn Holmes is set to move in with his 42-year-old girlfriend Katie Alexander.

The GB News host is planning to take his relationship to the next level just four months after splitting from wife Ruth Langsford. Despite Loose Women presenter Ruth still wearing her wedding rings, it seems Eamonn is set to move on permanently with his new girlfriend.

Eamonn had been living in a small rented flat after leaving the huge family home he shared with Ruth but he’s now ready to take the plunge with blonde divorcee Katie as they move in to their own love nest.

“Katie’s assured him she’s in it for the long haul and they’re both settling down nicely. They’ve been spending so much time at his Kingston flat that they’re even looking to move in together permanently,” a source told The Sun.

The source claimed that Eamonn hopes to move out of his current rented home soon because it’s “too small” and “too expensive”. His current home is said to be on the basement floor and doesn’t offer the lovebirds enough privacy.

“With that in mind, they’re really keen to move into a bigger place in the country with lots of land. Katie will obviously be there to care for Eamonn as he grows older and thinks it’s best to do that somewhere without prying eyes,” the source added.

The pair were spotted heading on a luxury cruise together over the weekend. The marriage counsellor was seen pushing Eamonn’s walking frame through the departure lounge as Eamonn followed behind in a wheelchair. Ruth returned to ITV to host Loose Women on Monday while pictures emerged of her ex-husband at Barcelona port with his new girlfriend.

The Mirror exclusively revealed earlier at the weekend that Eamonn and his new lover are “serious” about their “growing” relationship. A source told us: “Katie is very excited about the prospect of a trip away with Eamonn. He works hard at GB News and with his rehab so she is looking forward to them having some time on their own relaxing away from everything. But it was also be a clear sign to everyone that they are serious about their growing relationship.”

Eamonn and Ruth announced their split in May and divorce proceedings are expected to begin later this year. Speaking to the The Mirror earlier this year at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards, Eamonn said of their split: “I’m not OK. This is not a good time at all. It’s too early to say but I hope we can still be friends.”

As we have previously reported, Eamonn’s estranged wife Ruth was left devastated last month by the discovery he is being consoled through the split by another woman. Katie has been on numerous dates with Eamonn over the past few months and Ruth reportedly knew little about their friendship.

Ruth Langsford reveals son’s incredible gesture as dad Eamonn Holmes holidays with new flame

Ruth Langsford, 64, said her son Jack Holmes ordered an Indian takeaway when she returned from work last night, just days after Eamonn Holmes headed on a cruise with his girlfriend

Ruth Langsford has revealed her son’s sweet gesture just days after her ex-husband Eamonn Holmes was spotted heading on a cruise with his new flame.

The Loose Women star said 22-year-old Jack Holmes ordered an Indian takeaway when she returned from work last night and shared a video showing all the food items he bought for her. The delicious curry delivery included chicken bhuna, saag aloo and rice, while her son had curry and chips.

She said on her Instagram stories: “So my son ordered my takeaway, so it was here when I got home. Love him for that. So I’ve gone for curry, chicken bhuna, it’s my fave because I like curry with loads of sauce. Which rice, do you think? Just plain, I like really plain rice.

“And then in here my favourite side dish, saag aloo, spinach and potatoes. And then you’ve got to have poppadoms.” The 64-year-old TV presenter then showed her son’s takeaway choice of curry and chips before tucking into their Friday night’s takeaway.

It comes days after Ruth’s ex-husband and his new girlfriend Katie Alexander went public with their relationship onboard a luxury cruise with a pal saying: “They are serious about their growing relationship.” The pair were spotted at Barcelona port, with the GB News star on a mobility scooter, while Katie was smartly-dressed up.

Eamonn is an ambassador for travel agency “Not Just Travel” and sailed with Princess Cruises in May as part of a corporate away day. He had been due to go last month but delayed the trip so Eamonn could received more treatment on his back which has left him in severe pain in recent years and unable to walk without the aid of a frame or stick in 2024.

A source said: “Katie is very excited about the prospect of a trip away with Eamonn. He works hard at GB News and with his rehab so she is looking forward to them having some time on their own relaxing away from everything. But it was also be a clear sign to everyone that they are serious about their growing relationship.”
Going on a romantic holiday will be a big decision from Eamonn to show he is moving on after his marriage split from Ruth Langsford. The pair are set to begin divorce proceedings later this year after being married for 14 years. As we have previously reported, Eamonn’s estranged wife Ruth was left devastated last month by the discovery he is being consoled through the split by another woman.Relationship counsellor Katie, 42, has been on a number of outings with the GB News presenter in the past 12 months as well as being pictured at his home. We revealed in January that Katie had told friends she was in for “the long haul” and wanted to support Eamonn through his tough times ahead.

BBC Strictly Chris McCausland’s forgotten soap stint revealed as fans left gobsmacked

Strictly Come Dancing star Chris McCausland previously appeared in a huge soap – and fans have been left floored after only just realising.

Strictly Come Dancing enthusiasts were astonished to discover Chris McCausland’s appearance in a major soap.

The comic, aged 47, is currently strutting his stuff on the grand stage of BBC One’s glitzy show this year, joining a star-studded cast that includes Jamie Borthwick, Tasha Ghouri, and Shayne Ward.

Chris, who is partnered with the vibrant Dianne Buswell, has become a firm favourite, dazzling the judgesMotsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas, Anton du Beke, and Craig Revel Horwoodand viewers alike with their weekly performances. Notably, Chris, who is visually impaired, continues to wow with his dance skills.

Before showing his moves on Strictly, Chris graced our screens in shows such as Would I Lie To You, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and voiced Rudi on Cbeebies Me Too!

Amidst his current Strictly journey, Chris’ brief EastEnders gig has been brought to light once more. A fan posted an image of Chris in the soap, eliciting excited reactions online, with one viewer exclaiming: Didn’t know he was in ee omg.

Others expressed their surprise, with comments like: “How have I never noticed this until now? ” and another voicing their shock: I was so surprised like how did no one notice this. .

Chris’ character Karl made quite the impression on EastEnders, engaging with Bernadette Taylor (played by Clair Norris) in Kathy’s cafe and even sharing a game of chess. He wasn’t shy about making light-hearted jokes regarding his disability and playfully smeared sauce on his nose to throw Bernadette off her game although she ultimately triumphed in their second match.
