With Princess Anne celebrating her 74th birthday today, there’s no doubt her brother King Charles and sister-in-law Queen Camilla will offer their birthday wishes – but it appears Anne’s warm bond with Camilla was actually once frosty

Ever since he took to the throne, King Charles has been able to count on the loyal support of his little sister Princess Anne.

The Princess Royal has continued to keep up her busy schedule of royal engagements with her brother as monarch – and he will no doubt be sending her all his best wishes today as she turns 74. However, her relationship with is wife, Queen Camilla, is said to have been less smooth sailing over the years.

And tensions between the two women once led to Anne making a brutal prediction about Camilla’s future in the Royal Family, according to a royal expert. Author Angela Levin made the claims in her book, titled ‘Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: From Outcast to Future Queen Consort that the relationship between the two women took a long time to warm up.

She wrote: “Like many people who didn’t know Anne well, Camilla found her frosty demeanour difficult and somewhat unnerving to cope with [at first]”.

Levin also claims that “Anne was, for many years, opposed to the idea of Camilla being granted the title of Queen Consort” and even once made the brutal prediction that “Camilla will never be a true queen”.

These days, relations are said to have improved between the two women as “time has proven to be a healer”, with Anne’s opinion of Camilla becoming more positive over the years.

Camilla – who was crowned Queen alongside her husband Charles on 6 May at Westminster Abbey – was previously married to Andrew Parker-Bowles, with whom she shares two children: Tom Parker-Bowles, 48, and Laura Lopes, 45.

Anne is said to have dated Andrew herself back in the 1970s, when she was a young woman. As he is a Roman Catholic, she would have been unable to marry him as a member of the Royal Family – because the monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, Levin claims it would have been “out of the question”

The author claims that this romantic history added a tricky dimension to Camilla and Anne’s relationship: “Her relationship with Camilla was particularly awkward as they had both been involved with Andrew Parker Bowles”, she wrote.

Anne kept her distance from Camilla when she first entered the royal fold officially, “as much as possible” the biographer claims, adding that “Princess Anne reportedly initially gave Camilla the cold shoulder. It was little consolation that the Princess Royal had also had a frosty relationship with Diana, for whom she had no time before she married Charles, and with Sarah, Duchess of York”.

These days, things are much warmer between Anne and Camilla, Levin claimed, writing that Camilla’s “sense of duty” eventually won Anne over: “Anne has seen for herself how hard Camilla has worked for the monarchy and her sense of duty. Gradually, she became more amenable”.

Prince William had a four-word response to Meghan Markle’s pregnancy news, according to Prince Harry.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who welcomed Prince Archie in 2019 and Princess Lilibet in 2021, may be estranged from the Royal Family now but that wasn’t always the case.

Harry and Wiliam are said to not be on speaking terms now, following the dukes explosive claims against the Firm, but during the time when the Sussexes were expecting Archie, the two brothers were still close.

According to Harry’s memoir, Spare, which was released last year, the Sussexes decided to share their exciting news with the rest of the royals on the same day as his cousin, Princess Eugenie’s wedding, in October 2018.

Harry wrote about the day: “Euge was getting married, to Jack, and we were deliriously happy for her, and for ourselves, selfishly, since Jack was one of our favourite people.

“Meg and I were supposed to head off on our first official foreign tour as a married couple, but we delayed the departure several days, so we could be at the wedding.

“Also, the various gatherings connected to the wedding would give us a chance to pull aside family members one by one and tell them our good news.”

And after they had finally found the future King and told him the news his first reaction was that “we must tell Kate”.

Harry said: “After the drinks reception, in St George’s Hall, Meg and I pulled Willy aside. We were in a big room, suits of armour on the walls. Strange room, strange moment.

“We whispered the news, and Willy smiled and said we must tell Kate.

“She was across the room, talking to Pippa. I said we could do it later, but he insisted.

“So we went and told Kate and she also gave a big smile and hearty congratulations. They both reacted exactly as I’d hoped.”

Meghan Markle stepped out in Santa Barbara last week to attend a very special event on her own involving teenage girls and royal fans had one thing to say.

The Duchess of Sussex visited Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara on October 2 to engage with young girls about their experiences growing up in the digital age.

The visit, which was announced today (October 11), which is International Day of the Girl, coincided with the launch of a new digital-wellness programme called Social Media U, which is brought by Girls Inc. in partnership with non-profit organisation #HalfTheStory.

The new effort is financially supported by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s charity, the Archewell Foundation, the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, and Melinda French Gates’s Pivotal Ventures

Its aim is to encourage teenage girls to socialise without screens – and encourage them to use technology for positive connection and creativity

Meghan looked incredible in a smart casual ensemble, which consisted of a blue shirt with white details by J.Crew x Marie Marot (sold out online), a pair of white, seemingly linen, wide-leg trousers, a brown leather Ralph Lauren belt (£89) and a pair of brown suede heels by Manolo Blahnik (£595).

The duchess kept her brunette locks down in loose waves.

 

The majority of royal fans liked the look and appreciated the trousers did not touch the floor.

One user said on X: “It is one of her better looks. The slacks are long but at least not dusting the ground. I do wish she would move to a different style of pants but this look at least is appropriate.”

A second one wrote: “Well…her slacks are not dragging on the ground…”

Others liked the look in general, with one commenting: “It’s age appropriate and event appropriate. Markle is a slender woman, but for some reason…pleated trousers aren’t her friend.”

A year before Louis’s birth, Harry made a sweet five-word comment about Charlotte and George, saying they are “the most amazing things ever”.

He told royal author Angela Levin in 2017, as reported by the Daily Mail: “The reason I am now fifth is because of my nephew and niece and I could never wish them away.

“They are the most amazing things ever.”

Meghan Markle shared a “powerful” moment during her  first solo appearance last week and there was a particular message she could have been trying to send, a style expert has claimed.

The Duchess of Sussex stepped out in LA last Saturday to attend a children’s hospital gala where she mingled with other celebrities including Demi Lovato, Kaley Cuoco, Jamie Lee Curtis and Colin Hanks.

Meghan donned a striking red dress by Carolina Herrera, which she had previously worn in 2021. However, she opted to remove the overskirt for the new event.

The duchess has previously sported more neutral looks and even claimed she needed to wear muted hues during her time as a working royal.

Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at SilkFred, praised Meghan’s striking appearance in LA and told Express.co.uk: “Meghan’s choice to re-wear that stunning Carolina Herrera gown was an absolute showstopper.

“She gave the dress a modern twist by removing the dramatic overskirt, allowing the sleek silhouette and thigh-high split to take centre stage.

“It was a powerful yet refined look, and the bold red perfectly highlighted her elegance and confidence. Meghan’s decision to keep the accessories minimal, along with her flowing beachy waves and glowy make-up, really allowed the dress to be the focal point.

“It was sophisticated, fresh, and undeniably striking.”

The fashion specialist went on to explain how the duchess could be trying to communicate her evolution “personally and stylistically” as she showcased her new “confidence” and “individuality” in a bid to “break away from the [past] constraints of formality”.

The King has told republican campaigners he would not interfere if Australia one day voted to remove him as head of state.

Charles and Queen Camilla ’s week-long Royal Visit Down Under starts next Friday, which will also include a trip to Samoa as his first to a realm as King. Rumblings have been made from some in Australia for several years to have the Royal Family removed as head of state, dating back to the Queen.

Ahead of the trip, the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) had written to Buckingham Palace to request a meeting. In a reply, the King said it was a “matter for the Australian public” to decide, MailOnline reported.

Dr Nathan Ross, assistant private secretary to the King, wrote: “Please be assured your views on this matter have been noted very carefully. His Majesty, as a constitutional monarch, acts on the advice of his ministers, and whether Australia becomes a republic is, therefore, a matter for the Australian public to decide.”

In 2022, at the time of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Sydney MP Matt Thistlethwaite raised the prospect of a referendum on whether to replace the then monarch as head of state. He said at the time, Charles becoming King would be the “natural point…when a lot of Australians would say, ‘…it’s now time for us to look to the future’”.

He added: “Australians revere the Queen. I’ve got a lot of respect for her and she is very much loved in our nation. Now it’s time for us to stand on our own two feet. We’ve got our own identity and culture. We’re a confident, mature nation. Surely we can appoint one of our own as our head of state for the future.

“I see my role as one of trying to unite Australians around our future and looking to take the next step for our nation on the journey to independence. As the Queen’s reign comes to its twilight years Australians will naturally start to think, ‘Well what’s next for us?’”

As part of next week’s trip to Australia, the King will meet Professor Georgina Long and Professor Richard Scolye to hear about the work they do to help those affected by melanoma after his own cancer fight. Their Majesties will attend a community barbecue in Western Sydney, sampling a range of produce from across New South Wales.

Steve Davies, who worked closely with the Duchess of Sussex when she first joined the Royal Family, has defended Meghan against multiple claims of bullying from staff members. He insists that these allegations are far from the truth

“She gets a bad rap for being a not very good person to work with, that she was this evil person in the Royal Family,” he said. However, Steve remembered her as someone who engaged with people from all walks of life, from “working with charities to working with dog walkers and cleaners.”

One significant lesson Steve learned from Meghan was to “give respect to get respect”. He also confessed that he “felt sorry for her” when she first became a part of the Royal Family, reports The Mirror US

In an interview with In Touch Magazine, Steve explained how the constant scrutiny affected Meghan. He explained: “She was paranoid. We had people following us around everywhere we went.”

The former bodyguard recalled instances of being followed by drones and vehicles, describing it as a “nightmare”. The Duchess of Sussex was also denied freedoms she had previously enjoyed.

The former actress from ‘Suits’ also shared how her personal items, such as her passport and keys, were held by Royal aides. Reflecting on her desire for normalcy, she said, “People within The Firm would say, ‘No, you’re oversaturated, it would be best for you to not go out.’ I go, ‘Well, I haven’t left the house in months’.”

Despite Buckingham Palace staff levelling bullying accusations against her, which she has consistently refuted, Steve painted a picture of Meghan as “warm and considerate” based on his experiences with her in Canada.

He also noted that people are often taken aback by Meghan’s friendliness “what a big heart she has”. Although Steve no longer serves as her aide, he spoke highly of his former employer, saying he wouldn’t hesitate to work for her again, calling the Duchess a commendable boss.

Steve, who once worked closely with Meghan Markle, reminisced about a time when the Duchess expressed a simple wish: to shop at a grocery store like anyone else. He recounted, “I pushed the cart around the grocery store, and she was putting stuff in it. She really enjoyed that.”
