In a previous interview a lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret said the Duke’s nanny had commented on his character at an early age.

Prince Harry was said to have been “born angry” according to his nanny, a former Lady-in-Waiting to the Royal Family has claimed.

Lady Anne Glenconner, who served Princess Margaret, made the claims in an interview with former Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown in which she claimed to have heard the comments from nanny Barbara Barnes.

Ms Barnes worked looking after Lady Glenconner’s children for 12 years before taking up a role serving under Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles.

Lady Glenconner’s best-selling novel “Whatever Next? Lessons from an Unexpected Life” detailed her incredible life moving in royal circles and in a recently published video she recounted some stories to Ms Brown from her book.

According to Newsweek, Lady Glenconner said: “Barbara adored Prince William. Harry, I think, was a bit more difficult when he was small.

Lady Glencooner replied: “That he was born angry.”

Ms Barnes worked for Prince Charles and Princess Diana from 1982 until 1986. She was the daughter of an estate worker and started working for the Royal Family when she was 42. According to the Daily Mail, she was affectionately nicknamed Baba

In a rare statement to the press, Ms Barnes said she treated royal babies just the same as everyone else, saying: “I treat all children as individuals… I’m here to help the princess, not take over.”

When rumours of their marriage first swirled the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana were considered to be a fairy-tale couple, but things were not so rosy behind closed doors, according to Lady Diana’s former astrologer.

Back in 2020, Penny Thornton made the claim that Charles told Diana his true feelings just 24 hours before they were due to walk down the aisle.

Speaking in the ITV documentary titled ‘The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess’, Penny Thornton said: “One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was the night before the wedding, Charles told her that he didn’t love her.”

As reported in OK! Magazine, the astrologer added: “And that was truly a terrible thing to do to your bride. You know, that you’re going to marry in St Paul’s Cathedral the very next day.”

Charles and Diana were married for 11 years, but decided to separate in 1992. They continued their royal duties before officially divorcing in 1996.

Mr Harold explained: “I honestly believe that before Diana’s death, Charles and Diana’s relationship was in a good place and they were working well together as a team. They understood each other’s boundaries and wanted to be friends.

“They wanted to be there for one another and have each other’s backs. With their separation, of course, it was tough for both of them. They were both hurt.”

Almost 13 years before she made headlines for wearing a “revenge” dress on the night Prince Charles confessed his adultery on TV, Lady Diana Spencer made her first public appearance with her fiancé in a dress that scandalised the British press and overshadowed the future King. Here, Vogue looks back at the late Princess’s first act of fashion rebellion.

When the Lord Chancellor announced Prince Charles’s engagement to Lady Diana Spencer on 24 February 1981, American Vogue promptly commissioned a table laying out the betrotheds’ “cars, clubs, income [and] endearing mannerisms”. Charles, readers learned in the May 1981 issue, loved Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn’s works on the Gulag, was nicknamed Action Man and Golden Eagle, counted Verdi as his favourite composer (with a particular fondness for La Traviata), and habitually wore both Turnbull & Asser shirts and Penhaligon’s cologne. Diana, on the other hand, was fanatical about Not the Nine O’Clock News, known to her friends as “Shy Di”, and was given to “endearing sideways glances”.

The starkest difference between the two, however, was their romantic history. Historian Andrew Barrow listed out 23 of the 32-year-old Charles’s former paramours for Vogue, including Princess Marie Astrid of Luxembourg, Anna “Whiplash” Wallace and Diana’s sister Lady Sarah Spencer. Precisely no one, however, was name checked as a former love interest for the 19-year-old Diana, who had been selected as the royal bride in no small part because of Buckingham Palace’s insistence that Charles marry a virgin. The Queen Mother, in particular, felt the “sweetness and modesty” of “the Spencer girl” made her an ideal candidate for the role of Princess of Wales.

Diana was a startlingly cosseted teenager in the Jilly Cooper age, a waif whose most notable academic achievements included the Palmer Cup for Pets’ Corner at Sevenoaks (she was devoted to her guinea pig, Peanuts), and who kept a toy frog on the hood of her Mini Metro, a reminder that she would one day meet her prince. It’s difficult to blame the much more experienced Charles for struggling to perceive her as a serious life partner – “She is exquisitely pretty, a perfect poppet… but she is a child,” he reportedly said during their all-too-brief courtship – and her air of girlish innocence was only emphasised by her clothes.

Prior to her engagement, it was Diana’s mother, Frances Shand Kydd, who selected her wardrobe for her, which meant she frequently wore dowdy garden-party hats from milliner John Boyd and blousy, floral dresses courtesy of Donald Campbell. It would be British Vogue who came to Diana’s sartorial aid – particularly its fashion editor, Anna Harvey. “The first time I met Lady Diana Spencer was in 1980, in the editor’s office,” Harvey recalled in a tribute in the October 1997 issue. “Her sisters had worked at Vogue, and we thought we might be able to help with her image. I’d called in far too many clothes because I had absolutely no idea of the kind of thing she liked. By the time she arrived, I was shaking like a leaf, but I took one look at her and thought, This isn’t going to be too difficult after all.”

“Black to me was the smartest colour you could possibly have at the age of 19,” Diana later explained of wearing the Emanuels’ gown. “It was a real grown-up dress.”

For an early Vogue portrait taken by Snowdon before Charles had formally proposed, Harvey selected a rosy silk chiffon blouse for Diana to wear by the Emanuels, whose offices were just down the road from Vogue House on Mayfair’s Brook Street. The designers’ studio – then a haunt for celebrities ranging from Bianca Jagger to Lulu – would become a haven for “Shy Di” in the months that followed, when she began to feel less secure in the fairytale she was supposedly enacting. In that era, whenever she tried to choose her own looks without Harvey and her cohort’s input, it backfired. Case in point: for the landmark BBC interview to coincide with Buckingham Palace’s engagement announcement, Diana had gone shopping at Harrods with Frances, plucking a royal-blue Cojana London suit and pussy-bow blouse off the rack of the Knightsbridge store. Even the most fawning media outlets had to admit it made her look matronly, old-fashioned and – to quote Tina Brown – like a “Sloane on the frontispiece of Country Life”.

The above look was a marked departure from the suit Diana had worn for a recent BBC interview.

Said outfit only deepened the world’s impression of Diana as naive and childlike. “Shy, innocent, modest, retiring, demure, and coy, the girl next door… These are just some of the labels which have stuck to Lady Diana Spencer during the intense speculation leading up to yesterday’s announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles,” declared The Times. “It was for some of these reasons that she has seemed to many people such an eminently suitable choice to become the first Princess of Wales since 1901 and the future Queen of England… At the age of 19, she is young enough not to have been seriously involved with other men – something that is said to have been an important consideration to Prince Charles and his advisers… Her youth is in contrast to some of the older and more independent women whom Charles has previously accompanied.”

Prudence Glynn was one of the noted fashion journalists to criticise Diana’s gown: “Nobody wears a strapless dress to an occasion on which she will be seated most of the time. Why? Because you look as though you are sitting in a hip bath, silly!”

Across the Atlantic, the New York Times echoed the words of its London counterpart in the wake of the BBC interview, reporting that Diana “loves children, avoids nightclubs and stylish parties, and blushes engagingly whenever she is sighted by the posse of press photographers who have been pursuing her for months”. “She is described by her friends as gentle and shy,” the story continues. “During the ordeal of pursuit to which Fleet Street reporters have subjected her in recent months, she has shown good humour and patience, although once, surprised by photographers at the wheel of her red Mini Metro, she burst into tears.” Ominously, the piece concludes with a quote from Diana: “I know it’s just a job they have to do, but sometimes I do wish they wouldn’t.”

Princess Grace of Monaco was also in attendance at Goldsmiths’ Hall that night. When Diana confided in her about her fears for the future, Grace simply replied: “Don’t worry; it will get a lot worse.”

Still, Diana would soon realise that she could use said Fleet Street reporters to her own ends. The future royal had already twigged that Charles’s affections were divided; famously, it’s during this period that she returned to Clarence House to find a letter from Camilla Parker Bowles congratulating her on her engagement – days before anyone outside the Windsor clan was meant to have known about it. Yet the world had underestimated the lengths to which “Demure Di” would go in order to hold Charles’s attention. (As Jasper Conran would depressingly recall in The Diana Chronicles: “No matter what you were making for her, the question was always, ‘Will my husband think I am sexy in this?’”)

And so, in what would become a pattern throughout her 15 years in the royal family, Diana set about bursting the English-rose bubble with her fashion choices. For her first public date with her fiancé in the City of London one cool night in March, she asked the Emanuels to make her something suitable, but when she dropped by their studio to collect it, she clocked a dress that Alvin Stardust’s wife, Liza Goddard, had previously worn to a charity event, and asked to try that on instead. “It felt so different to anything she’d worn before,” Elizabeth Emanuel recalls now of the strapless ruffled gown with a plunging heart-shaped bodice. “She looked so grown up, like a movie star, and she loved the idea of breaking the mould.”

In many ways, the dress was all wrong for the evening’s musical recital at Goldsmiths’ Hall. Royals are notoriously meant to avoid black unless in mourning, for starters – and then there was the question of Diana’s “décolletage”, as the press called it. “Lady Diana wore a low-cut gown, well off the shoulder, and there were audible admiring gasps,” reported a positively giddy BBC journalist. (“I was quite big-chested then, and they all got frightfully excited,” Diana deadpanned in her tapes for Andrew Morton.) “Prince Charles, all but forgotten for the moment, seemed amused by the interest in his fiancée’s attire,” The New York Times declared. “After escorting her past a crush of photographers, he called back, ‘Have all the fashion writers finished?’”

The fashion writers were just getting started – and so was Diana. She would later claim to have been affronted by the press’s reaction that night, telling Morton: “I remember my first [royal] engagement so well. So excited. Black dress from the Emanuels and I thought it was OK because girls my age wore this dress. I hadn’t appreciated that I was now seen as a royal lady, although I’d only got a ring on my finger as opposed to two rings… It was a horrendous occasion.” It can’t have been wholly horrendous, though, as within a month, she’d brought the dress back to the Emanuels; she needed it altered to fit her new, slimmer frame, she said – and, yes, she had every intention of wearing it again.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sensationally quit the Royal Family back in 2020 before moving permanently to the US, where they still reside with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the Firm has been strained ever since, however, the past year saw the Duke return to the UK several times, including once back in February to visit his father, King Charles, following his cancer diagnosis, after which Harry declared on TV that he “loves his family”.

The Sussexes’ neutral stance in the past few months, after making a series of explosive claims about the royals, has made royal watchers believe there could potentially be peace talks between the two camps in the future.

The couple even bought a new holiday home recently, in Portugal, which could be used as their base in Europe, after they were evicted from Frogmore Cottage last year, following the release of Harry’s memoir, Spare.

However, the Duke’s return to his home country still remains in question, as according to one royal author, his wife has no desire to come back at all.

The last time the couple travelled to the UK together was in 2022 to attend the late Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

According to Omid Scobie’s bombshell book, Endgame, Meghan “never wants to step foot in England again” as she “never really felt at home” while in Harry’s home country.

Mr Scobie, who’s been dubbed “Meghan’s mouthpiece” several times, claimed that the Duchess “never wants to be involved in the British monarchy again”.

However, he did insinuate the prince is “ready to forget” about the feud and quoted him saying: “I’m ready to move on past it. Whether we get an apology or accountability, who knows: who really cares at this point?”

Endgame, which was released last year, claims to be a “penetrating investigation into the current state of the British monarchy”.

It is Mr Scobie’s second book about the royals, with his first one being Finding Freedom, which was released in 2020.

The Princess of Wales, King Charles and Queen Camilla saw their popularity in the UK plummet recently, according to a new poll.

New figures from Ipsos, based on 1,089 British adults aged 18-75 and polled between November 8-11, showed that support for most members of the Royal Family has declined over the period of two months.

Princess Kate ranked second as the most popular member of the Royal Family with 64% favourability, however, her score was two points lower than September when it was at 66%.

Just 10% of those polled said they held an unfavourable view of her, while 22% replied Neither and 3% said I don’t know.

King Charles, who ranked fourth, saw his popularity decrease by five points, after just over half (51%) of people said they held a favourable view of him, compared to 56% in September.

Just 23% held an unfavourable view of the monarch, while 24% replied Neither and 3% I don’t know.

Queen Camilla, who ranked sixth (including the Royal Family as a whole), saw the biggest plunge out of the three after she gathered a 35% favourability score, six points lower than September’s 41%.

Out of those polled, 33% said they held an unfavourable view of her, while 29 said Neither and 3% said I don’t know.

Even Princess Anne, who came up as the third most popular royal, saw her favourability drop by seven points, as it reached 55% in November, down from 62% in September.

The Royal Family as a whole saw its favourability decrease by two points, to 50%, down from September’s 52%.

The only members of the Firm who didn’t see a decrease in their favourability were the Prince of Wales, who ranked first and gathered a 65% favourability score – unchanged from September, and the Duke of Sussex, who came up seventh and gathered a 30% favourability score, up by two points from September’s 28%.

Meghan Markle saw her popularity plunge even further as only 20% of those polled said they held a favourable view of her, down from 21% in September.

The least favourite royal remains the Duke of York, who’s only liked by 10% of people, down from 11% in September.

The Princess of Wales, 42, will be stepping back into Royal duty within a matter of weeks to host her annual Christmas event.

Princess Kate will return to Royal duty again within a matter of weeks as she is set to host her fourth annual Christmas carol concert.

The event, named Together at Christmas, will see 1,600 people attend Westminster Abbey on December 6 for an evening of festive cheer, with this year set to focus on the theme of supporting one another.

When it was confirmed the event will go ahead after Kate’s difficult year following her cancer diagnosis, with the princess having finished chemotherapy treatment at the end of the summer, Kensington Palace confirmed that the service will reflect on one key message.

They said: “This year’s service provides a moment to reflect upon the importance of love and empathy, and how much we need each other, especially in the most difficult times of our lives.

“The service will shine a light on individuals from all over the UK who have shown love, kindness and empathy towards others in their communities.”

According to The Sun, among the guests expected to attend this year’s event are the child survivors of the Southport stabbing horror that took place in July this year at a Taylor Swift themed dance class.

The princess met the survivors in Southport with her husband Prince William, 42, last month, and also spent time with the families of the three girls killed in the attack – Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Alice Da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Bebe King, six.

The survivors have all now been invited to attend the carol service with their families. A source told The Sun: “Now she has personally ensured everyone is invited to her concert which, this year, will mean more to her than ever before. It promises to be an incredible, life-affirming night and there’s been a lot of organisation involved to get it all ready.”

While they may be family, Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan Markle, 43, are believed to have fractured relationships with Princess Kate, 42, and Prince William, 42, since quitting life as senior royals in 2020.

After moving across the pond to America, the couple have not held back from publicly talking about William and Kate, accusing them of various things including being cold. 

Since Prince Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare was released in 2023, it is believed the couples have not talked to one another.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also reportedly found out about Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis at the same time as the rest of the world, suggesting just how distant the couples have become. It is not believed they have seen Kate this year following her health scare.

Meghan Marke has opened up about celebrating Thanksgiving this week with her husband, Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in a new interview.

The Duchess of Sussex spoke to Marie Claire and revealed how her own family will be celebrating this year’s festivities.

The interview took place at a holiday dinner in California back in October, in celebration of the Archewell Foundation’s Welcome Project – an initiative launched in 2023, which aims to support programmes for women who have resettled in the United States from Afghanistan.

Thanksgiving is an annual holiday in America which celebrates thankfulness and is marked on the fourth Thursday of every November. It also marks the beginning of the festive season that leads up to Christmas.

Speaking to the outlet, Meghan revealed that there’s always something happening in the Sussex household to mark the occasion, and this year will be no different.

She said: “We’re always making sure we have something fun to do.

“Like any other family you spend time having a great meal and then what do you do? Play games, all the same stuff, someone brings a guitar—fun.”

The duchess added that she makes sure her two children can get to experience “the magic” of traditions like “great recipes that they end up connecting to a formative memory” at Thanksgiving” or putting out “carrots for the reindeer” at Christmas.

She said: “Every single holiday is a new adventure.”

For Thanksgiving, the Sussexes like to keep things “always pretty low-key”, according to the duchess, who emphasised the importance of being close to her mum, saying “being close to my mom is great”.

She added: “I was thinking about, in the past few years of having Thanksgiving here, like many of us, I think you always make sure there’s room at the table for your friends who don’t have family, which is really key”.

Meghan also revealed that she once had American social activist and feminist organiser Gloria Steinem join her on Thanksgiving as one of her guests.

The duchess said: “I love the holidays.”
