Speaking at a World Trade Organisation women’s event in the capital Abuja on Saturday, Meghan gushed about Nigeria and dubbed it “my country”.

According to reports, the Duchess arrived to the event an hour late, but made up for it with a glowing opening speech. She said: “I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country… my country.

Meghan recently discovered she was 43 percent Nigerian, according to a genealogy test. After she made the discovery, she called her mum and said that it was “exciting” for them both. The Sussexes are currently in Nigeria for their 72-hour whistle-stop visit. Their trip to West Africa comes after Harry’s very brief visit to the United Kingdom when he flew to his former country of residence the day after his son, Prince Archie, turned five.

During the meeting, Meghan described her discovery as “humbling” and said she had become increasingly appreciative of her heritage, calling Nigeria “my country.”

She said: “Never in a million years would I understand it as much as I do now. And what has been echoed so much in the past day is, ’Oh, we are not so surprised when we found out you are Nigerian.

“It is a compliment to you because what they define as a Nigerian woman is brave, resilient, courageous, beautiful.”

The Duchess confirmed in her Spotify podcast Archetype that she had learned she is “43 percent Nigerian” after taking a genealogy test, and immediately shared the news with mum Doria Ragland.

She added: “Being African American, part of it is really not knowing so much about your lineage and background … and it was exciting for both of us.”

Her excitement about her background prompted Mo Abudu, the panel’s moderator and chief executive of EbonyLife media group, to ask attendees to pick a Nigerian name for the Duchess.

Members of the crowd proposed “Ifeoma,” a name used by the Igbo tribe meaning “a treasured thing.” Other attendees suggested “Omowale”, meaning “the child has come home.”

The Duchess took to the stage to highlight the importance of mentoring young girls and to discuss the challenges women in Nigeria face in securing top leadership roles.

She said: “You need to come back home, you need to, at least, be a familiar face for the next generation to say, ‘Oh she looks like me and I can be that’.”

“And a few weeks ago she looked at me and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. And she [goes], ‘Mama, I see me in you’, Oh, now she was talking really literally. But I hung onto those words in a very different way.

“And I thought, yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you.”

According to a media report, journalist Conca Calleja has revealed that the ‘Kate Lookalike’, whose name is Gabriella Munro Douglas, impersonates for Kate Middleton and for her appearances as the Princess of Wales, she charges over 1,100 euros (approximately Rs 99,000) for every day. Despite this, Calleja has said that there is no official confirmation that the Palace has asked her for her services – “There is no official record or confirmation that the Palace has hired her for these things. Everything doubles do in this capacity is very much off the record.”

Gabriella Munro Douglas, whose Instagram handle is ‘Kate Lookalike’, has an uncanny resemblance with Kate Middleton and in a post on her Instagram account, she herself said, “I split my time between being a Kate Middleton lookalike, being a designer and renovating my house.” According to reports, Gabriella has been a contestant of X Factor and has also appeared in multiple advertising campaigns.
