Diana, Princess of Wales, couldn’t wear the necklace as intended but figured out a workaround with the help of her hairstylist at the time.

Princess Diana was known for her bold fashion choices, especially in the 1980s, but one such moment was function over fashion, says her former hairstylist.

In 1985, the late Princess of Wales was on a royal tour in Australia. She showed up to a banquet with a dazzling headband, but it turns out it was actually a necklace, which hairstylist Richard Dalton talked about at a recent People magazine panel event.

Mr Dalton said: “I think she had sunburn on her neck so we said, ‘Let’s make a headband of it.’” He added: “I asked Evelyn, her dresser, for six inches of knicker elastic.” Mr Dalton was able to affix the necklace to her forehead using sticky tape.

The necklace once belonged to Queen Victoria and was then left to Queen Elizabeth II, who gave the necklace to Diana as a wedding present, reports Vanity Fair.

The necklace hadn’t been seen in decades, until Princess Kate wore it to the Earthshot Awards in 2022, which took place in Boston, Massachusetts.

Kate has her own unique style, but at the same time, you see may hints of Diana’s daring choices, like opting for bold patterns and unexpected colors.

This may be Kate’s way of paying homage to Diana and keeping her late mother-in-law’s memory alive.

When Kate headed to Wales in 2022, her first royal tour since earning her new title of Princess of Wales, she wore a red peacoat made by LK Bennet, which is named “Spencer,” Diana’s maiden name.

Kate even dared to wear a daring black top undereath the red blazer, just like Diana did.
