Coronation Street star lands huge role in BAFTA-winning drama 10 years after leaving soap

Coronation Street’s Maddie Heath star Amy James-Kelly is set to star in BBC One drama Industry as a new character after being killed off the ITV soap over a decade ago

Coronation Street star Amy James-Kelly has landed a role on rival channel BBC One in the award-winning drama Industry after leaving the cobbles 10 years ago.

Amy joined Corrie in 2013 as Maddie Heath – a love interest for Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) who she met at a soup kitchen while sleeping rough. She left the ITV soap two years later, with Maddie dying after being attacked by Kevin Webster’s then-girlfriend Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews).

Ten years on, Amy, 29, is set to play the role of Jennifer Bevan, a newly promoted Minister in the Labour government, in the upcoming series of Industry.

She’ll be joining the critically-acclaimed drama alongside Twisters star Kiernan Shipka, Towards Zero’s Jack Farthing and Ted Lasso’s Toheeb Jimoh. Kiernan will play Hayley Clay, an executive assistant at payment processor Tender, while Jack plays Edward Smith, troublemaker and long-time friend of Henry Muck, played by Kit Harington.

Meanwhile, Ted Lasso’s Toheeb will plays Kwabena Bannerman – a trader at Mostyn Asset Management.

They will join Industry stars Myha’la, Marisa Abela, Kit Harington, Ken Leung, Sagar Radia, and Miriam Petche in the cast for series four, which begins filming later this month.

The BBC One drama follows a group of young investment bankers working at prestigious company Pierpoint and Co.

Last year, the series edited one particular scene in the BBC show after it was deemed too explicit for UK audiences. The moment, which featured a fully nude Kit Harington, has been cut from the BBC version, however it still aired in the American version of the episode, which aired on HBO.

Earlier this week, Coronation Street spoilers hinted that there could be more exits on the way – with one resident asking another to flee the cobbles with them.

Rob Donovan is returning to Weatherfield after escaping from prison last month, bumping into his ex Tracey Barlow. As she’s pulled into helping him, Tracy finds herself in trouble with the law once again – and old feelings resurface between the former couple.

Rob suggests that Tracy flees with him and they make a life together. But will she commit to a life on the run?

Yesterday, Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver opened up about leaving the ITV soap – and how she “nearly killed” her co-stars Simon Gregson and Craig Charles during a stunt gone wrong.

“I remember in the early days when you slapped someone – you used to do it,” she said.

“Now, you’ve got stunt people in and it’s all magic but we used to do it. I remember banging Steve McDonald and Craig [Charles]’s heads together and there was an almighty bang. Honestly, I nearly killed them. I got carried away.”
