Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had their sights set on another residence other than Frogmore Cottage, according to reports.
Meghan Markle’s wish to live in a specific residence within Windsor was reportedly met with a “firm” rejection from the late Queen Elizabeth II, who deemed it “inappropriate”.
Windsor Castle, boasting nearly 1,000 years of history as a royal residence, has seen generations of the Royal Family call it home.
Over the years, the Queen bestowed various homes on the estate to family members as gifts, including Windsor Castle’s monarchs, Prince Philip, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Prince Andrew with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson.
One such residence is Frogmore Cottage, a picturesque residence gifted to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their wedding in 2018. However, the reportedly couple had their sights set on a different property.
According to OK!, Harry and Meghan expressed interest in residing within the Castle itself and inquired about the availability of living quarters post-marriage. However, the Queen reportedly “politely but firmly suggested” that Frogmore Cottage, situated nearby, would be more suitable.
Further insight into the late Queen’s decision to bestow Frogmore Cottage upon her grandson and his wife was provided by royal expert Katie Nicholl’s book, The New Royals.
Nicholl wrote about a conversation with the late Lady Elizabeth Anson, who passed away in 2020, where she revealed the Queen regarded the Windsor home as a “big deal” and hoped Harry and Meghan would “respect” her generosity.
Lady Elizabeth reportedly said: “The cottage was a big deal. The Queen’s entrance into the gardens is right next to their cottage.
“It is essentially her back yard, her solitude, and her privacy. She was giving that up in gifting Harry and Meghan Frogmore Cottage. We all thought it was very big of her. She said, ‘I hope they’ll respect it.'”

Before settling on Frogmore, several other homes in Windsor were considered as potential residences for the couple, including Adelaide Cottage, now occupied by The Prince and Princess of Wales and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Adelaide Cottage, nestled within the private 655-acre royal grounds, served as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, wife of William IV. Its rich history includes being a beloved residence of Queen Victoria.
Renovated in 2015, Adelaide Cottage boasts intricate decorations, including a master bedroom ceiling with gilded dolphins and rope designs. It has hosted numerous royal guests and courtiers, including Simon Rhodes, son of the late Queen’s cousin Margaret Rhodes, who received assistance from the Queen in relocating his family to the UK.
