The One Show’s Alex Jones was forced to take over from Roman Kemp who issued an on-air apology.

The presenting duo were back on our screens this Thursday, July 11, after a short break for the Euros 2024 semi-final, which saw England triumphantly book their place in the final. The country was on the edge of its seat as Gareth Southgate’s team pulled off a thrilling 2-1 win against the Netherlands in Berlin, teeing up what promises to be an electrifying final against Spain on Sunday, July 14.

As they launched into Thursday’s live show, Roman couldn’t contain his excitement from the previous night’s match. Welsh presenter Alex welcomed viewers with her signature warmth: “Hello there it’s Thursday, and you’re watching The One Show live on BBC One and iPlayer with Roman Kemp and Alex Jones.”

She then turned to Roman, who was practically bouncing with joy, as he declared: “I’ve got to say it, what a result for England last night at the Euros, come on! Feels like it’s coming home.” Catching on to Roman’s jubilant mood, Alex quizzed: “Well, you were there, weren’t you? ” Roman, with a twinkle in his eye, admitted: “I haven’t been to bed…,” before swiftly amending his statement with a playful: “I have mum, sorry.”

Maintaining her cool, Alex confidently addressed co-host Roman, stating, “I’ve got it, don’t worry, I’ve got it,” and smoothly moved on to introduce the evening’s illustrious lineup of guests which included Deadpool stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, as well as Jenna Coleman, the lead actress from the BBC’s eagerly awaited series The Jetty.

The conversation quickly returned to football with host Jermaine Jenas teasing from a distance in Germany via video link. He left everyone in anticipation by hinting, “I hope we all get to say those magical three words on Sunday that I’m not going to be saying right now, but fingers crossed.”

Back in the studio, an excited Roman couldn’t hold back, blurting out: “Ah, do you know what? I’m going to say the three magical words, it’s coming home.” A playful scolding from Alex followed, “There you are you’ve done it now,” leading to Roman encouraging unity with: “Come on, you’ve got to get behind them, the whole country is invested.”

Intrigued, Alex sought more info asking: “Are you going back to see the one [game] on Sunday? ” This question resulted in a slightly embarrassed Roman issuing his second apology of the night to his mum. I might be, I haven’t told my mum, sorry,” he admitted. Roman, known for his role as a Capital FM breakfast show host and his third-place finish in the nineteenth series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! isn’t the only star in his brood.

His dad is none other than Spandau Ballet icon Martin Kemp, famed for his role as Steve Owen in EastEnders, while Roman’s mum is the acclaimed singer Shirlie Kemp, who shot to stardom in the 80s with Wham! and as one half of the duo Pepsi and Shirlie.
