At the time, he shared: “People don’t realise I have seriously bad blepharitis. I have to take [one pill] a day for it or I really struggle. I am going to need my eyes operated on at some point to sort it out.

What is blepharitis?

Blepharitis mainly causes red, swollen, itchy eyelids and flakes or crusts at the base of the eyelashes. In some of the worst cases, sufferers can wake up with their eyelids stuck together.

While the condition isn’t particularly serious, it may lead to dry eyes, cysts and conjunctivitis. However, it can normally be treated by washing your eyelids every day.

According to the NHS website, sufferers can use eye pads, wipes and eye drops to clean the area. A GP can also be contacted in serious cases.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph in 2017, he said: “I don’t think I can plate-spin, I’ve turned loads of things down because I just can’t get the time to do it. I can’t devote the time and it’s preparation.

“Then that job is finished, I’ll concentrate on the next job.”

Beginning to chuckle, he added: ‘I’m not laughing at bowel cancer, it’s because she keeps saying, “yeah”.’

Looking embarrassed, Cat then began to giggle and turned her face away, as Ben stepped in: ‘It’s called active listening, my wife does it and it drives me mad.’

Peter then joked: ‘Well, if you’ve got any issues with that and you want to ring up…?’ before continuing to list the charities.

Show viewers immediately took to X, formerly Twitter, to react to the moment, celebrating a guest had ‘finally called Cat out’ for the behaviour.

One penned: ‘At last someone has done it! Peter Kay calling out Cat Deeley on all her “yep… yeah…aha…um” while someone is trying to talk!’

While in an interview with Good Morning Britain, Myar said she would never watch him again after he left her feeling ‘humiliated’.

She branded Kay a ‘bully’ and accused him of singling her out because of her weight.

Peter later broke his silence on the incident after as he said: ‘I didn’t realise it was an insult. She did look remarkably like Lisa Riley, I didn’t realise that was an insult.’

Furthermore Lisa herself confirmed there was no bad blood between herself and the comedian as she shared on Instagram: ‘Please draw a line under this now, I am not offended, never was offended. I love Peter Kay to pieces. Laughter is my favourite medicine.’

Peter was clearly already irate after having two hecklers already removed from the show after one man repeatedly shouted out ‘garlic bread’.

One audience member told the Daily Mail at the time that they had walked out early because he was ‘nasty and bitter’ and ‘his performance was poor’.

One person said: ‘It was embarrassing, the guy only shouted garlic bread and the woman just shouted we love you Peter. Waited 20 years to see him and was disappointed.’

Another said: ‘We were sat in front of the guy. He shouted garlic bread about four times, as a professional comedian, he [Kay] should have handled the situation better, the woman only said she loved him! They weren’t heckling or swearing’.

At the time, it was his then-girlfriend – now wife – Joan who drove down to London in a tiny Mini, picked him up and took him home for Christmas. That long, humbling journey became the emotional backbone of a song that would later soundtrack millions of festive trips across the UK.

Looking back, Rea admitted that the track still takes him back to that fragile chapter of his life. He said the song always reminds him of a simple holiday in the Maldives and confessed that, despite his success, he never quite felt like a polished pop star, often comparing himself unfavourably to artists like Sting.

Beyond music, Rea also spoke openly about decades of serious health battles. After suffering pancreatic cancer, doctors removed his pancreas in 2001, leaving him a Type 1 diabetic dependent on dozens of daily pills. He later endured a stroke in 2016 and ongoing kidney problems, admitting that he never truly recovered from the physical toll. Still, he joked that his heart had remained “very good” through it all.

Just hours before his death was announced, Rea quietly shared a final nod to his Christmas classic on social media – an image of a snowy motorway with the words “Driving home for Christmas with a thousand memories.”
It was a fitting farewell from a man whose most famous song captured not festive excess, but love, survival and the long road home.
