Paul McCartney Is Embarrassed By This Beatles Classic

Despite Its Insane $30 Million Value, Paul McCartney Is Embarrassed By This Beatles Classic

Paul McCartney has his doubts about performing one of The Beatles’ most profitable songs ever.

    Highlights

Paul McCartney was embarrassed by The Beatles’ hit song “Yesterday” and almost didn’t record it, but it went on to become one of their most covered songs.
John Lennon felt that “Yesterday” was missing something, but still considered it a good song.
McCartney believes that “I Saw Her Standing There” is one of the best songs he’s ever written.

Paul McCartney is one of the most talented British musicians of all time. He’s also considered one of the most successful composers and performers of all time. After all, he’s written or co-written 32 songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold millions of albums across the world. Even today, at age 81, McCartney is still making new music and touring the world, with no plans to retire any time soon.

McCartney first rose to fame as one of the founding members and lead songwriters of the legendary band The Beatles. Despite their success, McCartney has admitted that he’s always been embarrassed by one of The Beatles’ biggest hits.

Paul McCartney Was “Embarrassed” By The Beatles’ Song ‘Yesterday’

Yesterday is not only one of The Beatles’ songs but also one of the highest-grossing songs of all time. Back in 2012, the BBC reported that this track was the fourth-most-successful song ever, having made a total of $30 million million in royalty payments.

Believe it or not, Paul McCartney came up with this song in a dream. “I was living in a little flat at the top of a house and I had a piano by my bed,” he said in an interview for The Beatles Anthology. “I woke up one morning with a tune in my head and I thought, ‘Hey, I don’t know this tune – or do I?’ It was like a jazz melody. My dad used to know a lot of old jazz tunes; I thought maybe I’d just remembered it from the past. I went to the piano and found the chords to it, made sure I remembered it and then hawked it round to all my friends, asking what it was: ‘Do you know this? It’s a good little tune, but I couldn’t have written it because I dreamt it.’”

As time went on, McCartney started to come up with lyrics for this song, choosing to picture a romantic relationship in its bitter end stages.

However, once he had the final piece, McCartney found out that it was like nothing The Beatles had done before. He also didn’t want to play the song on his own “It was a little bit embarrassing,” he said during a 2021 appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

“I didn’t want to be the guy out on the stage on his own. When I brought it in, it was just me and a solo guitar. That was it. We elected not to release it as a single in England. Like, ‘Nah, we’re a rock group’. We liked it, but it wasn’t a big feature on our stage act”.

McCartney was so embarrassed by the song that he almost didn’t record the final track. But he was convinced to do it by producer George Martin, who also suggested a string quartet accompany him.

“I said ‘Are you kidding?’. I hated the idea. [Martin] said, ‘Well, let’s just try it, and if you hate it, we can just wipe it and go back to you and the guitar’. So I sat at the piano and worked out the arrangements with him, and we did it, and of course, we liked it,” he told Rolling Stone. This proved to be the right choice because ‘Yesterday’ went on to become one of The Beatles’ most covered songs of all time.

John Lennon Thought That ‘Yesterday’ Was Lacking Something

John Lennon on 'The Tomorrow Show'

When Paul McCartney first played ‘Yesterday’ in front of his bandmates, John Lennon couldn’t help but feel that the song was missing something. Despite this, he admitted that he always considered it a good song. In fact, Lennon even referenced ‘Yesterday’ in his song ‘How Do You Sleep?’, which was featured on his 1971 solo album Imagine.

“Paul wrote the lyrics to ‘Yesterday’,” Lennon said in a 1980 interview found in the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. “Although the lyrics don’t resolve into any sense, they’re good lines. They certainly work, you know what I mean? They’re good, but if you read the whole song, it doesn’t say anything; you don’t know what happened. She left and he wishes it were yesterday – that much you get – but it doesn’t really resolve.

Although he didn’t contribute to writing the song, Lennon still received the songwriter’s credit as part of his partnership with McCartney. Despite this, Lennon always recognized that this song was all McCartney’s work. “I have had so much accolade for ‘Yesterday.’ That’s Paul’s song and Paul’s baby. Well done. Beautiful—and I never wished I’d written it,” he said.

Paul McCartney Thinks I Saw Her Standing There Is The Best Beatles Track

    Paul McCartney performing

During his time with The Beatles, Paul McCartney wrote over 71 songs for the band. Some were big hits while others didn’t even make it to the charts, like the song ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.’

However, McCartney believes that one of the best songs he’s ever written is none other than ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ which was the first song on The Beatles’ first album.

Originally, McCartney had the lyrics “Just seventeen/Never been a beauty queen” in mind, but John Lennon didn’t like the second part. So, they ended up changing it to “you know what I mean.” “I was like ‘Oops, this is not good,’” he told Howard Stern.

“Years later, I was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Neil Young was there … and I told him that story,” McCartney added. “He was playing that night … and he did the song and he used that line, of course. He was the only one to ever use that line, I think.”

Yankees’ Batting Revolution: New Manager James Rowson Shifts Focus to Situational Fielding Proficiency

TAMPA — Aaron Judge has done it regularly in his career, dating back to his college days, but now James Rowson is beating him to the punch.

During a few rounds of batting practice every day, the Yankees’ new hitting coach will split the group of four hitters into two teams and call out different game scenarios: Runners on second and third, one out, infield in — five swings to get the job done.

The practice creates some competition between teammates but also prepares the Yankees for the kind of situations they may find themselves in during the game later that day.

“Just kind of gets us thinking so when we hop into game situations, it’s like, ‘Oh, first and third, one out? I’ve already done this 20 times,’” Judge said Thursday. “It’s exceptional. … That’s just always translated for me. And I like a little competition.”

James Rowson has been putting the Yankees’ hitters in situational batting practices.Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

The pregame routine is part of an emphasis on situational hitting, part of the game that DJ LeMahieu said “is going to be held to a higher standard” under Rowson.

The Yankees were one of the majors’ worst offenses last season in just about every area, and situational hitting was no exception.

Under Dillon Lawson and then Sean Casey as hitting coaches, they hit .227 with a .677 OPS with runners in scoring position, both of which ranked second-to-last in the majors.

Not since 2019 have the Yankees been one of the game’s better teams at hitting with runners in scoring position.

That year, they ranked first in both batting average (.294) and OPS (.890) with runners in scoring position.

Not surprisingly, they scored the most runs per game (5.82) in the majors that season.

Aaron Judge has taken a liking to Yankees new hitting coach James Rowson and his teachings.AP

When Rowson was the Twins’ hitting coach from 2017-2019, his offenses ranked ninth (.268), third (.283) and second (.292) in hitting with runners in scoring position.

“I know it’s called the hitting coach, but the goal is to score runs,” Rowson said. “So everything we do, when we have the situational-hitting rounds or we talk about that, it’s to move runners, it’s to get us closer to scoring that run. So I want that to always be on our mind, like, ‘Hey, how are we going to score runs?’

Some days we’re going to be able to get a lot of them and other days they’re going to be hard to come by. So we can’t let those opportunities go by with chances to score runs.”

So Rowson gets the Yankees prepared for those situations in batting practice. It’s a way to have some fun but also to get batters out of “swing mode automatic,” he said.

“You’ve seen it fade a little bit [around the game] in the last couple years, but I think it’s important,” Rowson said of the situational-hitting rounds.

Anthony Rizzo #48, speaking to new hitting coach James Rowson during a workout at the New York Yankees Minor League complex in Tampa Florida.Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post

It’s just one of the reasons why the Yankees have enjoyed having Rowson back around the team.

He already had a strong relationship with Judge dating back to his days as the Yankees’ minor league hitting coordinator, and the two seem to have picked up where they left off.

“Getting a chance to have him come back here, I was pretty ecstatic,” Judge said. “He knows how to get on players but also, he keeps the energy level always high. I’ve never seen him come in here without a smile. He’s always locked in, ready to go. When you bring that type of good energy, it rubs off on everyone else.”

Judge appreciates that Rowson will speak each hitter’s language and do deep dives on his swing when he asks.

LeMahieu, who began building a relationship with the coach during offseason workouts at the Yankees’ facility, pointed to Rowson trying “to get guys to be the best versions of themselves.”

And Aaron Boone cited Rowson’s ability to connect, communicate, listen and apply.

“He’s a glue guy, but he’s also patient in how he deals with guys, gets a feel for guys, how to talk to guys,” Boone said. “His experience shows in that regard.”

  • The former Dodgers outfielder reportedly turned down a backup role with the Yankees, instead opting for an unexpected direction

The former Dodgers outfielder reportedly turned down a backup role with the Yankees, instead opting for an unexpected direction

The New York Yankees offered quite some players to join the club for the upcoming season, and a few had turned them down. Blake Snell was one on the list that declined the offer. Joining Snell was Amed Rosario, who reportedly turned down the option.

The franchise offered Rosario $4 million to be their backup infielder. However, the 28-year-old opted for a $1.5 million deal from Tampa Bay, and believes that he would get more playing time with the franchise.

The former Dodgers infielder was not keen on the money as he wanted more time at the plate. Wander Franco is currently out of the lineup, which gives more room and playtime as a shortstop with Tampa Bay.

The Yankees have that position filled with Anthony Volpe, leaving Rosario as a backup only when necessary. From the plate, the Bronx Bombers have their starting rotation loaded. It made sense for Rosario to decline the Yankees’ offer.

Oswald Peraza leaves Yankees infield backup in dilemma

The Yankees need a backup for their infield spot now that Oswald Peraza is sidelined due to injury. Peraza struggled with shoulder tightness, which prevented him from performing at his best.

The 23-year-old was forced to stay out of spring training as he reported discomfort. The shortstop will need to undergo an MRI scan and hope to turn things around soon. The Yankees will need to find a replacement for their backup before they enter the regular season.

After Rosario turned down the offer, the doors might be open for Oswaldo Cabrera as their backup infielder. Peraza’s setbacks have diminished his chances for opening day. The Yanks will need to call in Cabrera to be on the safe side.

Volpe appeared in 150-plus games last season, but the franchise will try to reduce that number, giving him enough days to rest. Aaron Boone and his squad have their batting and pitching lineup intact, but they still need to make a few adjustments before the MLB regular season.

The team will need to avoid injuries, especially infielders. Volpe must stay healthy, and Cabrera must be able to pick up the pace to provide the right support when required.

Brian McFadden quit Westlife over moment of ‘shame’ – but lived to regret it

Brian McFadden’s flash point came when a record company request for Westlife made him ‘lose all interest’, and his four ex-bandmates have since vowed to remain a four-piece

Westlife were at the top of their game back in 2004 and just three weeks away from hitting the road for their fourth world tour when bandmate Brian McFadden dropped a bombshell.

He was done and wanted out with immediate effect.

Announcing his departure in an emotional press conference, Brian – who turns 41 today – explained he wanted to spend more time with his Atomic Kitten star wife Kerry Katona and their two young daughters Molly and Lily.

“It’s very, very hard to juggle two lives when you’ve got a family and being in a band like Westlife, it is a huge commitment,” he explained.

“To be honest for the last year, especially since Lily was born, I haven’t really been able to commit 100 per cent to Westlife and I haven’t been able to commit 100 per cent to my family, so I kind of felt it was unfair to both. I felt it was the right time to stand back.”

His bandmate Kian Egan choked back tears as he read out a letter written to Brian by Westlife, admitting his departure had knocked them for six.

“The last five days have been a huge strain on all of us and only us five in the room will ever understand that,” he said.

“We have enjoyed so many times with you on the road, we’ve shared laughter, tears, success, weddings, babies and most of all we’ve shared our dreams.

“Although we wish very much so that things could be different, we understand and respect your decision.”

They fivesome insisted there was no bad blood, and poured cold water on claims it echoed Robbie Williams’ departure from Take That which was sparked by a series of rows.

However, the four remaining members feared that like Take That – who split less than a year after Robbie left – the end was nigh.

And Nicky Byrne previously told The Mirror it took a lot of healing for the band to move on and confirmed that there could never be any going back.

“I don’t think that Brian would ever ask to come back to the band. But the honest answer would be that we wouldn’t have him back in the group anyway,” he explained.

“We all get on great with Brian but we couldn’t go back to having five in the group because it was such an upheaval when he left.

“We had to re-build and start from scratch and we’re a different group now. We’ve moved on and Brian knows that as much as we do.

“If you are asking me if we would let him re-join the group then the answer is no.”

He conceded: “At the time I suppose we did all feel a bit hurt and abandoned by the whole Brian thing because we were emotional about what was happening.

“We were taking a huge step into the unknown when Brian left. I think we all felt a bit vulnerable and scared. That was probably the toughest thing we ever went through as a band but it brought us closer together.

“I think a lot of people wrote us off and thought we would be finished – like when Robbie Williams left Take That.”

Meanwhile, Brian split with Kerry, embarked on a relationship with Australian singer Delta Goodrem and relocated Down Under.

And he also lifted the lid on his real reason for walking away from the band, admitting the flash point came when they were told to cover Barry Manilow’s hit Mandy.

    Brian McFADDEN và Delta Goodrem

Brian moved to Australia to be with actress and singer Delta Goodrem
Brian told the Irish Independent: “That was definitely a turning point. I’ve always been very proud of Westlife, and I still think that we never got the respect we deserved, but I was f**king ashamed of that song.

“From the second we went into the studio to record it, I lost all interest.”

Over the years, Brian has made several murmurings about wanting back in.

In 2015 he admitted he was kicking himself about the cash he’d missed out on, telling The Irish News: “Sometimes I think if I’d stayed another 10 years, I would have made a lot of money, but that would be the only reason for any regret.”

Westlife continued as a four-piece and have vowed to remain that way
And in 2018, Brian claimed they’d been offered a mega-bucks deal to reunite as a five-piece, but said the other four had snubbed him.

“I was offered a big multi-million pound deal. It was the other boys in Westlife who said ‘no’. They didn’t want me back,” he told the Irish Sun.

“How does that make me feel? It makes me pretty upset because I didn’t realise they still had those feelings towards me.”

That same year, Kian made it clear that there was ‘no feud’ but explained that as far as they were concerned, Brian had been part of a band that no longer exists.

He told the Daily Mail: “It’s a very simple case of Brian was a part of the band for the first five years and the band existed for eight years without him and when we got back together Westlife was a four…

“He’s part of a band that doesn’t exist. There’s no negativity, no bad blood. There’s only positivity and it’s a case that the Westlife we’re members of, is a four. That’s it.

Mark Feehily added: “We wonder when we’ll stop being asked about it because it was 15 years ago. There was never a question of Brian being involved.”

Mark Feehily shocked everyone with his gay coming out in 2005. Having gone through many difficulties, Mark now has a happy family with his partner Cailean O’Neill and a 4-year-old daughter as beautiful as an angel.

The shy boy found his passion for music from Mariah Carey and the Westlife members themselves

Mark Feehily was born in 1980 in the suburbs of Sligo, Ireland in a family with 3 brothers. Mark’s life passed quite peacefully, he used to be a shy and unremarkable character at school. Mark’s father had a huge record collection, but Mark’s life only really changed after his father asked for a discarded satellite dish, causing the TV in the house to go from having only 4 channels to 400 channels.

Suddenly, Mark’s world became more vivid thanks to television channels around the world. The male singer is a big fan of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, always singing the song I Will Always Love You all day long. Later, Mark recalled that famous diva Mariah Carey was the inspiration for him to pursue a music career. The male singer was captivated by the famous diva when she sang the song Hero. “She is gorgeous, her voice is out of this world. When I heard the song Hero for the second time, I felt something awakening inside me. If I hadn’t watched her that day sing, there probably wouldn’t be me now” – Mark confided.

Shane Filan and Kian Egan are also musical inspirations for Mark Feehily. When they were in middle school together, Mark admired Shane and Kian when they performed in the school musical. The opportunity came when Mark was also given a role in the musical by his teacher. Since then, they became close friends and together formed the band IOYOU (the predecessor of Westlife). Step by step, the band signed a contract with a professional record label, becoming the famous Westlife of today.

The openly gay display shocked public opinion
At its peak, Westlife had millions of fans around the world. Girls constantly fantasize about the members, considering them the men of their dreams. Mark is no exception. He is loved for his bright handsome appearance, captivating blue eyes and radiant smile. Wherever Mark went, girls chased him and screamed for him.

But in his heart, Mark was very miserable because he was gay. The male singer had always wondered about how to come out during his youth, calling Westlife’s busy life “the perfect distraction” to forget about this problem. At that time, Mark only focused on work and kept his private life private. Fans think he doesn’t have a girlfriend because he’s too busy.

But then someone came and changed Mark’s life. That was Kevin McDaid, a member of the band V. They quickly developed feelings for each other, wanting to do things together like every other couple does. And so Mark bravely came out, as well as publicly announced his relationship with Kevin. In August 2005, Mark confided this story in an interview: “I want people to know the truth about who I really am. I’m gay and I’m proud of it. It’s just that simple.” My true self. I don’t want any pity, or to become an example. Simply because I feel this is the right time to tell the truth.”

Fans everywhere were shocked, but they were quick to support Mark and Kevin’s relationship. Some fans were even inspired by Mark, so they bravely announced their sexual orientation to their family. The male singer was very touched and said this was one of the proudest things in his career.

Joined Westlife thanks to… Backstreet Boys

Kian Egan once wanted to become a rock star, but a traffic accident at the age of 15 left his little finger disabled. The male singer can still play the guitar but cannot harmonize as well as before.

At this time, Shane Filan and Mark invited Kian Egan to join their band, the forerunner of Westlife. This band is oriented towards pursuing Pop music, so at first Kian was very surprised and refused to participate: “Are you going to tell me to give up my rock career? I’m in 3 rock groups already. I I’m the lead guitarist and main vocalist. I can’t join your group.”

But then the Backstreet Boys’ pop tunes made Kian Egan think again. He suddenly realized that Pop music was not bad and agreed to join Shane and Mark’s band. The male singer quickly joined his friends, forming the group IOYOU to perform locally.

  • Why Westlife Were Better With Brian McFadden?

Why Westlife Were Better With Brian McFadden?

Let’s be honest; Westlife reached their peak as a five-piece, especially with Brian McFadden.

When he departed in 2004, it created a void the group has never fully filled.

Boyzone and Westlife were huge stars but Brian and I felt left in the background, says Keith Duffy | The Sun

From April ’99 to December 2000, single after single hit number one, achieving 14 chart-toppers in their career.

However, here’s the catch – 12 of those were with Brian.

It’s not a coincidence; it’s a fact. Since his departure, things haven’t been the same.

Brian brought vocal strength, adding a third powerful voice to the group.

Why Dancing on Ice star Brian McFadden will never re-join Westlife

His departure left a gap in both vocal prowess and charisma.

Keane Hegan may have an ego, but his singing ability falls short. Nikki is pleasant but limited to backup vocals.

That puts the heavy lifting on Mark and Shane. Brian wasn’t just a strong voice; he injected fun and mischief into Westlife.

Without him, the group seems devoid of personality, missing the lively spark he provided.

Brian left willingly, but considering his current stage in life, a return seems plausible, especially since he continues to sing those songs with Boyzlife.

However, the real hurdle is likely money.

Splitting earnings five ways compared to four is a significant factor.

Even if Brian were open to returning, Westlife might not welcome him back.

It’s unfortunate because there’s a consensus among fans that the group was better with him.

Niall Horan felt like a ‘prisoner’ in One Direction and ‘struggled’ with fame as teen

Niall Horan, 27, shot to unimaginable heights of fame after auditioning on X Factor in 2010 as a 16-year-old before being put in the band with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne

Niall Horan says he “felt like a prisoner” at some points during his time in One Direction.

The singer, 27, shot to unimaginable heights of fame after auditioning on X Factor in 2010 as a 16-year-old.

His life changed forever when Simon Cowell put him in the band alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne.

The boys went on to become one of the biggest boy-bands of all time, so it’s safe to say their freedom was compromised.

In 2015, Zayn quit the group, with the rest of the band taking an extended hiatus the following year.

They then returned as a foursome, before eventually all going on to launch extremely successful solo careers.

Niall was asked if he ever felt like a “prisoner” during the height of the band’s fame during his appearance on Dermot O’Leary’s podcast People, Just People.

“A couple of times, yeah, because we were 17, 18, 19 for the first few years, and I struggled with it,” the Irish singer responded.

He went on: “As you know, I have to be doing something all the time and the thought of just closing the curtain in my hotel room was just madness to me.

“I really struggled with the idea: ‘Why won’t you just let us out? We just want to go for a walk!’ But you can’t get inside the brain of a fan.

“Now I completely get it, but at the time we were like: ‘You’re our age, will you just let us out so we can walk down the street! You must understand!’”

Shining a light on the band’s success, Niall recalled: “In the UK, it was nuts. We’d go and do signings here and there and bits and pieces and that was crazy.

“That was the first kind of side of it, you know, banging on car windows. Around the release of What Makes You Beautiful is when it really kicked off.

“We did a HMV run around the country, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, to do the signings and that was the first time I seen the madness.”
