Tyson Fury hints at major tactical tweak as he trains for Oleksandr Usyk fight

TYSON FURY has hinted at a tactic change for his fight with Oleksandr Usyk by giving fans a glimpse into his training.

The pair of unbeaten champions were due to collide in the heavyweight division’s first four-belt unification bout on February 17.

But just two weeks before the Saudi showdown, the Gypsy King suffered a horror cut in sparring that forced the bout to be rescheduled to May 18.

Now Fury – who watched Manchester United beat Liverpool at Old Trafford – is officially back up and running by restarting his training camp.

Fury shared a clip from his pad session with Bob Howard – who has cornered his brothers Tommy and Roman in the past.

And interestingly, he turns left and captioned the short clip: “Southpaw GK.”

Fury has often switch-hit during his career, once fighting Martin Rogan in 2012 purely as a southpaw just to prove he could do it.

The WBC champion controversially beat MMA star Francis Ngannou, 37, in his last bout in October despite being floored.

And he recently watched from ringside in Riyadh as Anthony Joshua, 34, then knocked out Ngannou in two rounds.

But Fury – set for a two-fight series with the man who twice beat AJ in Usyk – has refused to even entertain the all-Brit bout for the time being.

He told The Stomping Ground: “Me and Usyk is the biggest fight of the century, for all the belts first time it’s ever happened, six, seven belts on the line.

“He’s undefeated, I’m undefeated, and there’s nothing bigger than that. No fight’s bigger than that.
Fans say ‘there’s no way Oleksandr Usyk beats this version of Tyson Fury’ as Gypsy King trains on day one of fight camp
“I know that people are trying to get their foot in the door to try and get a fight with me but when I beat Usyk I’ll be the undisputed.

“And then I’ll fight him again and I understand that one of the belts are going to be taken of us again straight away.

“So, I’ll have two fights with Oleksandr Usyk this year. Let’s not forget, Usyk beat the other fella twice in a row.

“That puts him way down the ladder, nowhere near, you understand? So me and Usyk is the fight?”

Fury and his family gave camera crews access to his £1.7million mansion and it appears they are back again for season two.

The Gypsy King took to Instagram to share a smiling selfie containing cameramen and a soundman in the background.

Fans can expect to see more of Fury’s home life as wife Paris featured heavily in season one.

There could also be plenty of action from the gym as Fury prepares to take on Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed heavyweight clash.

Season one offered a glimpse into his fight preparations ahead of a showdown with Derek Chisora in December 2022.

And Netflix were so keen to tie Fury down to a second season, it was commissioned before the first even aired.

It was claimed Fury turned down the offer of another season, turning down millions in the process, with the fighter branding the filming process as intrusive, however he seems to have changed his mind.

He previously said of the first series: “I wanted out. It was a couple of weeks in, and I was on the phone to my lawyers ‘is there any way I can get out of this? I don’t know what I’ve signed up for again. I’ve made a mistake’.”

Paris added: “We got halfway through filming and he wanted to cancel the whole show.”

A source close to the family said: “After retiring Tyson saw the Netflix show has a lucrative opportunity in place of the money he would have earned by taking on a fight.

“But the filming process was particularly stressful and coupled with the fact he’s now an active boxer again after coming out of retirement, he decided to put a series two on hold for the foreseeable future.”

“There is hope within the streaming giant that it could be reprised but for the short term it is not something Tyson is considering.”

Fans are already backing the Brit to blow Usyk away after he released video this week showing him at day one of training camp for the bout with the Ukrainian.

KSI’s Misfits Boxing in talks with FIVE footballers with Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney still expected to make shock switch

MISFITS BOXING are in talks with FIVE footballers to make a switch to the ring – with Wayne Rooney still expected to be one of them.

YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI and his manager Mams Taylor launched Misfits in 2022 to host celebrity-style crossover bouts.

And they have already welcomed stars from the social media, music and entertainment world.

But perhaps their most ambitious plan was to try to bring Manchester United legend Rooney over for a shock bout.

Talks were developing until the ex-England captain publicly ruled it out – for now – to focus on his managerial career.

But Taylor – a former music mogul and now boxing promoter – is still quietly confident he can convince Rooney into the stunning switch.

He told SunSport: “I think he wanted to explore and see what the football options are and good luck to him.

“He’s at a place – similar to KSI – where he’s got to be driven by passion.

“He seems to have a massive passion for football obviously and he’s got a passion for boxing.

“But he understands the commitment and the time that it would take and the sacrifices to actually box and he would take it seriously from what I gather.

“So it’s not a causal decision but I’m confident we’ll see him in a Misfits ring at some point.”

Rooney, 38, retired from playing football in 2021 and moved into management but he was most recently sacked by Birmingham in January after spells with Derby and DC United in the States.

Not long after, Misfits reached out to the Old Trafford great in the hope of lining him up with a summer showdown.

Rooney has confirmed the unlikely talks took place but “at the minute” his future remains in football.

But the former Everton forward is not the only one to be secretly contemplating swapping the pitch for punches.

Taylor added ahead of Misfits 13 in Nashville: “We’ve got four or five footballers we’re talking to currently. So let’s see how that materialises.”

  • Campbell Hatton insists Jake Paul fighting Mike Tyson is ‘WRONG’ and admits the iconic heavyweight returning to the ring is ‘worrying’… as the unbeaten son of former world champion Ricky bids to win his first title this weekend

Campbell Hatton insists Jake Paul fighting Mike Tyson is ‘WRONG’ and admits the iconic heavyweight returning to the ring is ‘worrying’… as the unbeaten son of former world champion Ricky bids to win his first title this weekend

Unbeaten rising star Campbell Hatton has admitted he is concerned about Mike Tyson‘s scheduled return to the ring this year to face Jake Paul, and is adamant the fight should not be going ahead.

Tyson and Paul made the shock announcement earlier this month that they will be fighting each other on July 20 in Texas, with the bout due to be shown live on Netflix.

The former two-time heavyweight champion will be 58 by the time of the fight, and is 30 years Paul’s senior.

Paul, who shot to fame through YouTube before turning to boxing, has fought 10 times over the last four years, while Tyson has not been seen in a professional ring since 2005.

Paul has compiled a record of nine wins and one defeat, with six of his victories ending in a knockout to highlight his punching power, despite his lack of experience.

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson are set to fight each other in July, despite the latter not having fought in nearly two decades

Tyson took to social media to share a short footage from his latest training session

Tyson is already training hard for the fight with Paul, positing regular videos of his workouts

But Campbell Hatton (pictured) thinks Tyson's return is 'worrying' and doesn't believe the fight should be happening

But Campbell Hatton (pictured) thinks Tyson’s return is ‘worrying’ and doesn’t believe the fight should be happening

Tyson has posted regular videos of his workout routines online to show that he is still in impressive shape as he moves towards his sixties, but Hatton believes his punch resistance will be a problem against Paul after being away from the sport for almost two decades.

‘I think it’s sad to see, it’s not something I’m looking forward to,’ Paul told Mail Sport as he addressed the upcoming fight.

‘I think when people see the videos of Tyson training where he’s smashing the pads and the body belt and things like that, he looks a monster still. But I think people are really underestimating the toll it takes on you, going through training camps and punch resistance for anyone, never mind somebody in their late fifties.

‘There’s no doubt in my mind if it was about going in there and throwing hands, Tyson’s going to blow him away but it’s not as simple as that. When we saw him at the end of his career in the early 2000s and late 90s, his punch resistance seemed gone then. Over 20 years later, it can’t have improved.

‘I think it’s a shame because you’ve got this new audience who have come to boxing through the YouTube fights that probably haven’t watched Tyson. They’re going to get wrong reading, they’re going to watch it and there’s a good chance Jake Paul beats him purely because of age, and I think a lot of those young fans probably aren’t going to realise just how good Tyson was. They might come away thinking that Jake Paul is better and it’s absolutely laughable.

‘I do think it’s bad for boxing so I’m not looking forward to it.’

He continued: ‘If anyone else wanted to get in the ring at 58, it wouldn’t happen. It wouldn’t be allowed, people would put a stop to it.

Six of Paul’s nine wins have come by knockout, and Hatton is concerned about Tyson’s punch resistance as he moves towards his sixties

‘But because of what a fighter he was years ago, people are sort of letting it go and accepting it. It is wrong. Jake Paul, based on boxing ability and all of that, isn’t fit to lace Tyson’s boots, the Tyson that we all know and love.

‘But it doesn’t matter who you’re in there with, he’s laying people out so he’s clearly got the athleticism and power if nothing else. To be hitting someone, he’s nearly 60-years-old, his body is not going to be able to take shots off anyone. Jake Paul has not been a boxer but he can clearly whack a bit. So it is worrying. If it was anyone else, they wouldn’t be letting it go ahead.’

Tyson ruled the heavyweight division on two separate occasions during the 1980s and 90s, but has now passed on the mantle to his namesake, Tyson Fury.

Fury is widely regarded as the best heavyweight on the planet and will get the chance to prove that in an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk in May.

But Anthony Joshua is hot on the heels of the pair after recording four-straight victories, including a devastating two-round demolition of Francis Ngannou this month.

His emphatic win came just four months after Ngannou floored Fury and pushed him all the way before losing a split decision, casting doubt over the true pecking order in boxing’s blue-riband division.

Hatton believes Joshua is back to his best after teaming up with Fury’s former trainer Ben Davison, and revealed he would favour AJ to beat the Gypsy King based on their recent performances.

‘I thought AJ looked brilliant. I always said if he was to get his head back right, he’s back because it’s not like he’s aged or he’s lost the power or lost the stamina,’ Hatton said.

‘He’s always had it all, there’s just been something missing. And I think linking up with Ben Davison and his last few fights he seems to have got that confidence back. Everything that he was lacking seems back.

‘I think there’s big jumps in class between Ngannou and Usyk and Fury on paper. It’s easy to get carried away with things, but on last performances AJ is miles in front of where Fury was.

‘We don’t know how much of Fury’s last fight was a blip, but on current form you’ve got to say AJ’s the man. Usyk has beat him twice but that’s not the AJ we’ve been seeing for the last couple of fights so we’ve got to see that next fight. But for me, current form, you’ve got to put AJ above Fury at the minute.

‘For the last few years it’s been no doubt who the No 1 and No 2 are in Fury and Usyk, but we’ll see how Fury performs in there with Usyk in May and then hopefully we can find out who is the top boy by them all fighting each other.’

Joshua looks set to bigger and better things after dispatching Ngannou in Saudi Arabia, and he urged the ex-UFC champion to stick with boxing in the immediate aftermath of their fight.

Hatton would also be happy for Ngannou to stay in the sport, and has put forward another knockout artist for the Cameroonian-born star to potentially face next, but admitted his defeat by Joshua proved he doesn’t have what it takes to make it to the very top.

‘I think there’s fights out there for him. I think a good fight would be the [Deontay] Wilder fight,’ Hatton claimed.

‘I don’t see him winning any major titles, but obviously we saw him put Fury down so he’s got a puncher’s chance. I think that makes the Wilder fight exciting because it’s two similar styles where the boxing ability is limited but they’ve just got monster power.

‘That fight is definitely interesting and is definitely one I’d like to see.’

Exciting times lie ahead for the world’s elite heavyweights over the coming months, but Hatton will make his first outing of 2024 before all that in Sheffield this weekend.

He is looking to follow in his dad Ricky’s footsteps, after he also won the Central Area title before going on to become a two-weight world champion

He is set to take on Jimmy Joe Flint for the Central Area super-lightweight title as he aims to win his first belt since since turning professional in 2021.

His father, former two-weight world champion, Ricky, held exactly the same title 25 years ago, and his uncle and trainer Matthew also won the strap during his career.

Hatton is confident of keeping the family legacy going on Saturday night, but is not taking Flint lightly.

‘We’ve been preparing for this fight for a long time, I think it’s probably been on the cards for about six months now,’ he explained.

‘It’s the first title both my dad and Matthew won in their careers. I’d be the third member of the family to pick up the Central Area title all going well, and hopefully it will be the first of many so I just can’t wait.

‘Without a doubt, I’m expecting a tough fight. We’re at the stage now where it’s the perfect time for a fight like this where there’s that bit of jeopardy in there. It’s a big motivator for me where I know I’ve got to be on my game.

‘So far in my career most people I’ve boxed have had winning records but they’ve come and when things have got tough they’ve just looked to survive. I know it’s not going to be the case with Jimmy Joe.

‘He’s going to come to win and want to leave with his belt and I know I’ll have to be at my best on the night to come away with the win. But I’ve got no doubt that I will be.’

  • Tony Bellew claims Anthony Joshua would KNOCK OUT Tyson Fury if the British pair agreed to heavyweight showdown… as he backs AJ’s ‘ridiculous power’ to stop the Gypsy King even if he beats Oleksandr Usyk

Tony Bellew claims Anthony Joshua would KNOCK OUT Tyson Fury if the British pair agreed to heavyweight showdown… as he backs AJ’s ‘ridiculous power’ to stop the Gypsy King even if he beats Oleksandr Usyk

Tony Bellew believes Anthony Joshua would knock out Tyson Fury if the two British heavyweights finally agreed to fight each other.

Joshua dispatched Francis Ngannou inside two rounds in Saudi Arabia earlier this month, and has now had three of his last five fights in the Middle Eastern country.

Fury also fought in Saudi Arabia last time out, beating Ngannou on points in October, and is set to return there in May for his undisputed heavyweight clash with Oleksandr Usyk.

A win for Fury could set up a fight against Joshua, a mouthwatering prospect for British boxing.

And Bellew believes Joshua’s recent performances would make him the clear favourite against Fury, who only beat Ngannou on points in the MMA star’s boxing debut.

‘I believe he faces the winner of Tyson Fury v Oleksandr Usyk and if that is Fury who comes out as the winner and the undisputed champion, then Anthony Joshua knocks him out,’ Bellew told Spinbet.

‘I just think he will let his hands go and stop Fury. His power is ridiculous and he has once again proven how destructive he can be, it is scary.’

Joshua demolished Ngannou in Saudi Arabia two weeks ago, just four months after the former UFC heavyweight champion knocked down Fury and pushed him all the way before losing a razor-thin points decision.

But the 34-year-old delivered a dominant performance as he knocked down the MMA star twice and then finished him with a devastating right hand that left the Cameroonian-born star requiring medical attention.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn suggested earlier this week that his client and Fury could sign a two-fight deal to finally face each other, with one of the bouts potentially taking place at Wembley Stadium.

Joshua has now won his last four bouts since losing his rematch to Usyk by split decision two years ago, an emphatic return to form that has impressed Bellew.

‘You have to say well done to AJ because he is the one going out there and knocking these guys out,’ the former WBC cruiserweight champion said.

‘The job he did with Otto Wallin was absolutely clinical, it was a brilliant performance from start to finish.

‘The finish was ridiculous and then we cross over to the Francis Ngannou fight and everyone thinks he’s going to be in a world of trouble. I pretty much said it would be over within six rounds but what I did also say was that if it went past six rounds.’

Hearn feels Joshua has put himself back at the top of the heavyweight division, and admits even he was shocked by how easy the Brit made it look against Ngannou.

‘The comeback for Anthony Joshua is unbelievable. I’m talking about the mental comeback,’ Hearn, who is Joshua’s promoter, told iFL TV this month.

‘I’m talking about the comeback from criticism. I’m talking about the comeback to form. Should he retire now, or is he the best heavyweight in the world? It’s one of the two.

‘So, what this guy has done to come back to the position he’s in is unbelievable. Like a broken man after the second Usyk fight, searching for answers, searching for form. He has worked so hard to find it.’

Bellew echoed Hearn’s stance, suggesting Joshua is mentally much stronger than he was even when he won his two world titles.

‘Anthony Joshua is in a place now where the mental fragility that he’s had placed on his name has now gone,’ he said.

‘There is no mental side anymore. He doesn’t have much to think about because Ben Davison has taken care of most of that. He knows he’s fit and can go and let his hands go.’

Aussie UFC star Justin Tafa says he pulled out of a fight due to a problem with an armrest and two old ladies

Brisbane heavyweight Justin Tafa has spoken about his UFC 298 fight week withdrawal, insisting that being stuck in the middle seat in economy class on a long flight was partly to blame.

Tafa was scratched from his bout against Marcos Rogerio de Lima in California last month after suffering a knee injury during training camp

His younger brother, Junior, stepped up on a day’s notice to fill his spot.

The ‘Bad Man’ this week revealed that his woes began on the flight from Australia to America when he had to sit between two elderly women and couldn’t use an armrest.

‘I put it down to the body not being right with the travel,’ said the 30-year-old, who stands 182cm tall and weighs 120kg.

‘When you’re in my body, sitting in the middle seat, you know what I mean.

Francis Ngannou is given new WBC ranking after stunning knockout by Anthony Joshua… with the MMA star vowing to return to boxing despite brutal defeat

Francis Ngannou’s new WBC ranking has been revealed following his knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua .

The former UFC star rocketed up to No 10 after he pushed Tyson Fury all the way in a closely-fought contest back in October.

Ngannou was perhaps unlucky not to have his hand raised as the winner in his first fight inside a boxing ring, however it was a different story when he squared up against Joshua earlier this month.

The Brit showed his classed as he knocked Ngannou down in the first round, and twice more in the second to secure a dominant victory.

As a result, Ngannou has plummeted down to 24th in the heavyweight rankings.

Joshua meanwhile is No 1, ahead of Frank Sanchez, Agit Kabayel, Efe Ajagba and Jared Anderson.

Ngannou after his defeat admitted that he had no memory of the knockout.

Ringside officials moved quickly to administer oxygen to Ngannou, who has since opened up about his knockout while speaking to fans in an Instagram live stream.

‘I was conscious right after [the knockout], and since then everything’s been good,’ he said. ‘I’m still going to run some medical work, just in case.’

The Cameroon-born MMA fighter, who is currently signed to the Professional Fighters League, is keen on making a return to boxing when the time is right.

‘Right now, I don’t know exactly what fight I’ll be looking for next,’ he said.

‘I know that I’m going to take some time to rest up, focus on myself, and then when I’m ready, I will get back to training.

‘It’s not over yet – not at all, We’re just getting started. The only thing that we will miss this year is time, and I think we have some good amount of time ahead of us.’

Boxing legend questions whether Mike Tyson and Jake Paul ‘may have agreed’ how their huge fight ends

Boxing legend Teddy Atlas has questioned whether Mike Tyson and Jake Paul have already ‘agreed’ on how their fight will end.

Paul, 27, is set to take on former world champion Tyson, 57, on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The details of the fight, such as the rounds and weight, are yet to be determined – but the two have so far been vocal in their public exchanges ahead of the bout.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming showdown against Tyson – also known as ‘Iron Mike’ – Paul said: “I idolized Mike Tyson until the first time I met him 4 years ago…he called me Logan. Going to make sure he knows who I am real close and personal.”

Tyson has also had his say after taking to his personal social media to post a video of himself training, where he said: “You still wanna f*** with me?”

While anticipation is building amongst the two fighters and fans across the world, boxing trainer and commentator Atlas is hesitant to join the hype.

“Unless this is a WWE agreement, which I don’t know that it is – I never said this before because I think all these fights are legitimate, and they are and have been – but this one makes me wonder,” he said said on his YouTube channel (as quoted by Daily Mirror).

“I’m not questioning the integrity of Paul. In fact, I like his integrity. I like what I’ve seen in the guy.

“I’m just saying, if there was a time I would question it, this would be the time.

“I can’t see, unless Paul is that confident, that Tyson is too old now and he’s that good, because Paul has been getting more confident, and he does have a good right hand and does punch well with it and Tyson leads with left hooks.

“Maybe Paul thinks he can hit him with a right hand, I don’t know.

“All I know is that this is the first time I’ve said, ‘I wonder if there’s an agreement, because if there’s no agreement, Paul might be making a mistake. … I’m surprised Paul is taking this risk.

“Power doesn’t disappear even when you’re old. He’s still got speed in the combinations. He’s still got that style.”

There is no evidence or suggestion out there to support Atlas’ claims, however, and Paul and his management have already rubbished several conspiracy theory claims surrounding the fight – with this looking to be just one of many that we’ve seen as the fight edges closer.

Tyson was last in action back in November 2020, where he had an exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. Paul was also in action on the same card, as he knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson.

Daniel Cormier weighs in on Sean Strickland’s recent admissions about mental struggles

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier has chimed in on Sean Strickland’s recent comments.

‘Tarzan’ has been out of action since his split-decision loss to Dricus du Plessis in January. That defeat ended Sean Strickland’s time as champion, after just a few short months. Since then, the former titleholder has called for a rematch but has yet to schedule a return to the cage.

That’s probably for the best. Earlier this week, Sean Strickland took to social media, with a video discussing his mental health. In the video, the former champion noted that despite his fame and fortune, he’s still dealing with mental issues that he can’t get beyond. That’s something that struck a nerve with Daniel Cormier.

Earlier today, the UFC Hall of Famer discussed Sean Strickland’s video on his YouTube channel. There, Daniel Cormier compared the former champion’s comments, to Alexander Volkanovski’s post-fight comments following UFC 294. ‘The Great’ famously stated that he was dealing with depression following a first-round knockout loss to Islam Makhachev.

In Daniel Cormier’s view, fans and fighters need to treat Sean Strickland’s plea for help with the same energy. Whether they like ‘Tarzan’ or not, the former champion needs help. Cormier feels that the MMA community should rally around Strickland as a result.

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier reacts to Sean Strickland’s mental health comments

“Sean Strickland is a guy that has a very, very dark past.” Daniel Cormier stated on his YouTube channel earlier today, discussing the former champion’s video. “We all know that. But that dark past has served to make him a world champion fighter and a guy that is willing to go through so much adversity. He said that he’s rich, but that he can’t get past the hurdles mentally. I want to make sure that we as the consumer, treat this in the same manner, in which we treated Alexander Volkanovski when he spoke about his issues mentally.”

He continued, “Whether you love him or you hate him, we have to look at the human being. When Volk said that he was in his own head, we all rushed to speak to him and his strength. We need to make sure we do the same thing for Sean Strickland. Sean Strickland’s , that’s a plea for help. So we as the mixed martial arts community, should rush to his side again. Just like we did for Alexander Volkanovski.”

Thanks to new ownership by Liberty Media and the famed docu-series Drive to Survive, Formula 1 has become more and more popular than ever. With a constant spotlight over the drivers’ heads, the drivers are constantly surrounded by fans and media. However, the reigning champion is not a fan of such media attention and believes that the media fails to draw boundaries on some private matters.

In a recent interview with The Project, Verstappen discussed Drive to Survive: “Some things are just private, right? People don’t need to know what we are doing or what we are saying. Some things are private.”

The 26-year-old has never been a fan of the mega docu-series by Netflix. Even though it increased his popularity to a great extent and showcased his back-to-back winning runs in the last few years.

Despite the show’s massive popularity in the sport on a global level, it has been criticized for overdramatizing the narrative and portraying fake rivalries.

Max Verstappen once walked out of Drive to Survive

Max Verstappen has a love-hate relationship with Drive to Survive. The Dutchman once walked out of the show and called out Netflix for creating fake drama. He said that they use words and scenarios and compile them in a way that fits their story and creates fake storylines.

Verstappen said that he prefers to have a one-on-one interview rather than sit for DTS shooting. The three-time world champion also spoke about not liking the black room where Netflix conducts the interview and talks about F1 or the ongoing season.
