Dwayne Johnson’s $217M Homage to Martial Arts Legend Bruce Lee Proves He’s a Huge Fan

Dwayne Johnson’s films have all exploited the comedy-action star’s larger-than-life personality and domineering physical presence as a means to achieve an effect on the silver screen that can immediately draw in a crowd, irrespective of the demography. His films have garnered widespread praise and acclaim over the years for their ability to turn out such incredible profits at the box office and it is not without some talent that The Rock has been able to climb to the topmost levels of fame, stardom, and celebrity adulation from his fans all over the globe.

Insomuch, it is rare and often incomprehensible for such a public figure to display his fanboy crush on a separate and beloved artist. As it so happens, for Dwayne Johnson, none other than Bruce Lee himself can hold that level of sway and influence over him.

Dwayne Johnson Shows His Praise For Legendary Bruce Lee

One of the first few films to bring out Dwayne Johnson’s serious comedic timing mixed with impressive action chops on-screen was 2016’s spy action comedy, Central Intelligence. Starring beside Kevin Hart, the film not only made Hart and Johnson a fan-favorite duo (and themselves became best friends leading to numerous epic collaborations) but also served as a first of a string of irrefutable successes in the industry for the former pre-wrestler.
    Central Intelligence Central Intelligence (2016)
The film, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, witnesses Dwayne Johnson’s Bob Stone as a CIA agent on an adventure with his childhood protector and high-school classmate (played by Kevin Hart). While encountering bullies along the way, the character displays incredible prowess over the two-inch punch – a hat tip to the move made famous by the Wing Chun master, Bruce Lee. Moreover, Johnson’s costume which portrayed a pair of yellow and black sneakers is also a homage to the late 70s actor.

Central Intelligence Holds Key to Dwayne Johnson’s Success

For a long time, The Rock’s extraordinary rise had been treated like an event from Nolan’s Inception – where his rise happens like a dream, not at the beginning but in the midst of unfolding events. After a bare recollection of a horrific CGI face in The Mummy Returns, Dwayne Johnson suddenly catapulted to the highest levels of success and stardom, starring in films like Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain and franchise phenomenons like Fast Five.

What happened in the decade in between when The Rock was not only absent from the public eye but also failed to heed industry execs’ warnings about there being no place for a physically built guy like him in today’s film and television culture? Did he simply choose not to believe that he could never fetch a leading man role and go on persevering?
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in Hobbs & ShawDwayne Johnson and Jason Statham lead the Fast franchise spin-off in Hobbs & Shaw
As time would tell, the early years of his foray into Hollywood were truly one of the most difficult, challenging him physically as well as wringing him emotionally. Not only was he knocked down several levels after his transition from WWE fame as the People’s Champion but he was made to believe his worth was inclusive to his appearance alone and breaking his body down to the structures of a more generic actor would be the only way he could become a star.

After he proved the industry wrong with his career-defining roles in Pain & Gain and Fast Five, The Rock went on to carve out larger chunks of Hollywood by going for comedy and full-on riotous fun of a role in Central Intelligence. Here, he not only poked fun at himself and the cruel abuse suffered due to the norms of appearance but made the audience laugh at the expense of his own on-screen humiliation.

The film holds a special place in Dwayne Johnson’s filmography because it proved how far he had come since his years in the early Aughts and how gracefully he has matured through his perseverance to achieve exactly what he set out to accomplish – be the world’s most famous leading star.

The Fast & Furious franchise always had its fair share of drama, and at this point, any Hollywood event without some fair amount of action off the screens is an issue of concern. However, what transpired between The Rock and Vin Diesel on the sets of The Fate of the Furious was a matter exceeding a commonplace fallout between co-stars. Their disagreement, to put it mildly, would go on to affect not only the franchise as a whole but drag the entire business sluggishly through the mud, including Paul Walker’s shockingly tragic and premature death.

Vin Diesel’s Ridiculous Rule on Set of Fate of the Furious

The fallout between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson has always had fantastical versions of events to satiate the fandom’s curiosity regarding what must have happened between the two A-listers. One version claims tardiness as a probable cause – perhaps the unprofessionalism of one didn’t suit the work ethics of the other. Other rumors are all chalked up to clashing egos. And now, a new version of the rumor has risen just as Fast X draws closer to its launching date.

Vin Diesel v Dwayne JohnsonVin Diesel v Dwayne Johnson

According to a new report, Vin Diesel had allegedly invented a numerical point system to keep track of the number of hits being thrown around among the trio: Diesel, The Rock, and Jason Statham. In order for no one actor getting to throw more punches or roundhouse kicks than the other two, the point system would measure and dole out equal action-fueled choreography. An insider reveals:

Diesel became concerned that British action star Jason Statham was landing a few too many punches during one particular fight scene. So he suggested that a numerical system be implemented, so that punches, body slams, roundhouse kicks, and head butts all had separate values and could be properly counted up to make sure Diesel always came out on top.

Then, an ‘equal pain’ clause was created, ensuring that everyone received an equal amount of pain, and none of the three men downright lost a fight.

Vin Diesel and The Rock behind the scenesVin Diesel and The Rock behind the scenes

Even though the numerical point system was later replaced in favor of an equal pain clause, the contract was still ridiculous in its entirety. The trio apparently ended up signing a written agreement to officially close the deal. This pain clause could have resulted in a clash of egos on set and has become the new rumor pandering to the mass curiosity regarding what ultimately resulted in the breakdown of the Fast family.

A Brief Recap of the Vin Diesel vs. Dwayne Johnson Drama

The Vin Diesel v Dwayne Johnson drama has now become as ubiquitous as the debate surrounding Henry Cavill in the global pop culture scene. However, for those who haven’t been keeping in touch with all things hot and happening in and around Hollywood, here’s a quick recap of the crash and burn of one of Hollywood’s most high-profile action thriller duo.

The flitterings of friction began on the sets of the franchise’s eighth installment, as The Rock posted a cryptic message on social media about his male co-stars being difficult to work with. The ensuing few years since then have seen The Rock publicly quit the franchise and go off on his own with the Hobbs & Show spin-off sequel. Since then, numerous to and fro between him and Vin Diesel added up to comprise an ugly battle of words and cryptic posts denoting an irreparable argument between the pair.
Vin Diesel's plea falls on deaf earsVin Diesel’s plea falls on deaf ears
As Fast X entered production, Diesel attempted a final shot at reconciliation despite The Rock saying that a verbal understanding between the two had put the matter to rest and Johnson had already said his goodbyes to the franchise. And yet, Diesel’s lengthy imploration was construed by Johnson as manipulation, especially considering how the former had invoked family and Walker’s death in his persuasive attempt to get The Rock back on board.

That remained the final exchange between the two and nothing has been heard from either of the actors ever since.

    Fast X premieres on May 19, 2023.

Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s Fast 7 Was Chaotic Because of Studio’s Decision With Paul Walker Role

Recently, Vin Diesel talked openly about the enormous difficulties of finishing Fast & Furious 7 following the untimely passing of co-star Paul Walker. Walker died in 2013, interrupting filming, leaving the studio with the difficult decision of how to approach his unfinished scenes as Brian O’Conner.
Vin Diesel and Paul WalkerVin Diesel and Paul Walker
Diesel claimed that finishing Walker’s role under duress resulted in turmoil, intense feelings, and additional expenses for the 2015 action sequel. But he thinks that the movie did justice to their friend’s memory in the end.

The Tragic Loss of Paul Walker: Challenges in Completing Fast & Furious 7

After Paul Walker passed away midway through filming, the studio had to figure out how to finish Brian’s scenes while also coping with the sadness of the cast and crew. Vin Diesel claimed this caused chaos as writers scrambled to rewrite the script to give Brian a befitting farewell.

“It costs a lot of money and a lot of time to do. It was a terrible tragedy and he had a third of the movie to go,” he continued. “People don’t really realize how much of the movie he had left. They worked around it and it was hard.”

Walker could not film, so the crew had to fill in for him with CGI and stand-ins, including his brothers. Diesel claimed that implementing these sophisticated solutions took additional effort and resources.

Cast Unity and Love for Paul Walker’s Memory

Diesel acknowledged that tensions were high as the cast grappled with Walker’s tragic passing and the need to please the audience. He admitted that under the strain of the circumstances, he and co-star Dwayne Johnson occasionally got into arguments.

He also claimed that in the end, despite any artistic disagreements, everyone came together to finish the movie out of a mutual love for Walker.

Reflecting the Fast Family Mentality and Success in Honoring Walker

The Fast and Furious actor thinks Brian’s parting in Furious 7 brought closure despite the obstacles. Walker’s character was retired, and the cast gave him a fitting on-screen send-off by allowing him to live out his days peacefully with his family.

Diesel echoed the Fast family mentality, adding that saying farewell to their beloved friend was challenging but gratifying. The movie was successful in honouring Walker’s legacy.

Vin Diesel reflected candidly on the arduous task of completing Fast & Furious 7 without Paul Walker. Technical difficulties, spiking costs, raw emotions, and cast tensions made filming chaotic. But according to him, the satisfying farewell to Walker’s character amidst trying circumstances embodied the heart of the franchise.

Reba’s 1991 ‘For My Broken Heart’ Album Is Full Of Timeless, Sad Songs Inspired By Immense Personal Tragedy

    Reba country music

There’s nothing that hits harder than a beautifully sad, heartbreaking, gut-wrenching classic country song.

And Reba McEntire’s seventeenth studio album For My Broken Heart is a masterpiece of an album that’s full of heartbreaking tunes that’s are as relevant and timeless now as they were upon release in 1991, over 30 years ago now.

The album was Reba’s first project recorded and released after the tragic airplane crash that killed most of the members of her touring band, as well as her tour manager, Jim Hammon. In addition to Jim, her keyboardist and bandleader Kirk Cappello, fellow keyboardist Joey Cigainero, drummer Tony Saputo, guitarists Michael Thomas and Chris Austin, bassist Terry Jackson and backup singer Paula Kaye Evans, as well as the two pilots, Donald Holmes and Christopher Hollinger, were all killed that day.

In the liner notes for the record, Reba wrote that the project was “a form of healing for all our broken hearts” following that unspeakable tragedy, so it makes sense as to why they’re all so sad.

In fact, during the recording process, session bass player Leland Sklar asked Reba if they were going to do any happy songs… but that just wasn’t where she was at that time, she recalled in an interview with Vinyl Me, Please:

“‘For My Broken Heart’ came to me right after the plane crash. Instead of it being a couple’s separation or a breakup, to me that song was, that world didn’t stop for my broken heart because I lost so many loved ones in the plane crash.

Reba McEntire to Star in NBC Comedy From 'Reba' Boss

The loss of my band and tour manager got channeled into this album with every song, every lyric. Leland Sklar was the bass player in that session and he came in after about the fourth song that we recorded and he said, ‘Reba, are we gonna do any happy songs?’

And I looked up and I said, ‘Leland, not on this one.’ And he said, ‘I understand.’”

The tracklist of course included #1 hits like the title track, “Is There Life Out There” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” which was originally recorded by Vicki Lawrence in 1972.

For My Broken Heart became Reba’s highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 chart at that time (it peaked at #13), and is still one of her best selling albums after moving four million copies. Impressively, it also became the first album by a female country artist to be certified 2× platinum by the RIAA.

Talking to USA Today, she shared,
“When I did the movie, I had just decided to get divorced myself. I felt in that low place. It was the worst time in my life as well. This character was at the worst point in her life. I had that to use. Thank God I had that to use. It was therapeutic. I know exactly what that feels like. Getting out of bed every day and getting to work is such a job. I’m not the type to do Ambien or wine or pills. When you go to work, you can’t be the person who puts that on everybody. You have to be professional.”

But this one time, he wanted to prove just how brave he is in the face of death.

In a past interview, the Transporter star was shooting for his then-upcoming film Crank, which was filled to the brim with action and deadly stunts. One of these stunts happened in a scene where his character would have to tussle with his opponent while dangling from a chopper 3,000 feet above the streets of Los Angeles. Without giving it much thought, he agreed to perform the stunt himself with no additional help. He remembered looking at his stuntmen and telling the interviewer about it, saying:
“The stuntmen asked me a hundred times, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ They couldn’t stress how important it was for me to realize they didn’t want me to do it. That this was really something I was asking to do.”
But keeping the concerns of the crew members aside, the star performed the sequence to perfection, while also being able to stay safe.

    What Was Crank About?

While people might argue that this film is just too over the top, fans argue that it was supposed to be that way. Crank follows the story of Chev Chelios, a British assassin who is injected with a drug that requires his adrenaline to always remain at the highest level. Therefore, he does everything to maintain it, whether it be driving criminally fast, dangling from a flying chopper, or killing people with his bare hands, he has to do this until he can find a cure for this poison.

The Rock and Cody Rhodes are not the only big names set to face-off in WrestleMania 40.

If Not The Rock vs Cody Rhodes, These 5 Storylines Will Convince You to Watch WrestleMania 40

Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, is on the verge of making a comeback to the wrestling world. His match with The American Nightmare, also known as Cody Rhodes, has certainly attracted a lot of attention towards WrestleMania 40.

Produced by WWE, WrestleMania 40 is the upcoming professional wrestling event which will be held two nights- April 6 and April 7. This is the first WrestleMania since the formation of the TKO Group Holdings after the WWE was merged with UFC. This happened after Endeavor bought the former company in 2023, and implies that in addition to the WWE players, UFC players will also be joining the event this year.

While The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes is one of the most highly anticipated matches of WrestleMania 40, here are 5 other matches (via WWE) that will keep you hooked.

    Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes

Roman Reigns is the longest reigning WWE Universal Champion title-holder in his second reign and the current WWE Champion in his fourth reign. This has earned him the title of the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Two-time Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes will be up against Reigns for the second time as The Tribal Chief defeated him in the main event of WrestleMania 39. This is The American Nightmare’s chance to end Reigns’ reign as the WWE Universal Champion.

Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre

Former two-time WWE Champion Drew McIntyre is getting his chance to win a world title this year at the WrestleMania 40. He will be facing World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins at The Showcase of the Immortals.

The Scottish Warrior was unable to defeat Rollins the two times he challenged him at WWE Crown Jewel and WWE Day 1. So, this is his chance to redeem himself by winning the title in front of the WWE Universe.

Logan Paul vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens

Logan Paul has been making more enemies than friends, if his recent streak is anything to go by. To begin with, he defeated Rey Mysterio for the U.S. title last October at WWE Crown Jewel. Then, he cheated his way to a disqualification victory during his match with Kevin Owens at the Royal Rumble earlier this year. This obviously put him on Owens’ radar who is not planning to let Paul off the hook, so easily.

Although The Social Superstar did not manage to win the title in the Elimination Chamber, his faking an injury only to hit The Viper with brass knuckles made him another enemy in Randy Orton. To make matters worse, Paul mocked SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis for not announcing a match for him at WrestleMania, which led to Aldis announcing a match in which he will be defending his title of the U.S. Champion against Orton and Owens.

    Gunther vs. Sami Zayn

Gunther is easily the longest-ruling Intercontinental Champion as he will have held the title for 664 days by the time he faces Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40. So far, The Ring General has defeated the likes of Jey Uso, Chad Gable, Sheamus, and Drew McIntyre to protect his title.

However, former Intercontinental Champion title-holder Sami Zayn is a strong contender for Gunther and there is a chance that the latter might finally have to give up the title. Gunther and Zayn have faced each other in a match before. However, the title was not on the line then. Only time will tell whether or not Zayn will manage to beat The Ring General.

    LA Knight vs. AJ Styles

LA Knight has been on the hunt to find AJ Styles for quite some time now. From backstage at Smack to catering and even places that were not related to WWE, Knight tried to track down Styles to avenge him for what the latter did in the Elimination Chamber.

For those unversed, AJ Styles bludgeoned into the Elimination Chamber to stop Knight from defeating World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins. It is payback time for The Phenomenal One as he will be facing Knight at WrestleMania 40.

The upcoming two-night wrestling event is going to be quite exciting if the lineup is anything to go by. Fans must keep their eyes peeled unless they want to miss their favorite stars taking down their opponents.
