‘Money talks’, admits heavyweight boxing icon, 58, after considering shock comeback off heels of Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul

LENNOX LEWIS has refused to rule out a boxing comeback – if the price is right.

The British legend – and last undisputed heavyweight champion – officially retired in 2004 a year after his last fight.

He bowed out after beating Vitali Klitschko and remains one of the most celebrated heavyweights and fighters from the UK.

But in recent years, he has watched as former opponents Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield both made controversial comebacks.

So it leaves Lewis, 58, open to offers as he told The Guardian: “As my friend says, I ain’t no fool.

“I was seeing if I could catch you out there. For me, money talks, bulls*** walks… That’s what I’m saying. I’d 100 per cent consider it.”

Lewis revealed he still stays in shape despite being retired for two decades by jogging and swimming.

He said: “I ran five miles this morning, swam a couple of lengths, 100m. Then I woke up and took a shower.”

Holyfield, 61, faced ex-UFC champion Vitor Belfort in a shameful showdown in September 2021 – losing in a single round.

A year earlier, Tyson boxed fellow great Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition bout which ended a draw over eight rounds.

    Mike Tyson’s controversial comeback

    Mike Tyson is BACK!

Yes, boxing’s youngest heavyweight champ of all time – just 20 when he achieved the feat – is preparing to lace them up again.

He faces YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on July 20 in Texas.

The controversial clash – set for the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Dallas – has been scrutinised over the 30-year age gap.

Tyson will be 58 by the time the fight for the ages comes around and nearly 20 years removed from his last professional contest.

He was last seen in the ring in November 2020 for an exhibition with fellow legend Roy Jones Jr, which ended a draw after eight rounds.

Paul is meanwhile 9-1 in the ring, losing only to Tommy Fury in 2023, and has won three times since.

His fight with Tyson will also be a landmark first on Netflix, with over 250MILLION subscribers able to watch the bout.

But now Iron Mike will return in a controversial clash on July 20 in Texas against YouTuber-turned boxer Jake Paul.

By the time the bout come around there will a 31-YEAR age gap between the two.

Paul, 27, has lost only once in his ten bouts against Tommy Fury, 25, winning three bouts since.

But Lewis warned: “I’m concerned for Jake Paul. Tyson still knows how to punch, as you can see when he’s hitting a bag.

“If Jake Paul gets hit by one of those punches, he’s going to feel it. I know Jake Paul doesn’t want to get hit.

“Tyson comes forward and he knows how to cut off the ring. It could be a matter of time, as how good is Jake Paul’s defence?

“I saw Mike a couple of weeks ago and he looked good. He was walking around without a shirt and showing off his body so he’s getting ready.”

MIKE TYSON will return to the ring for the first time since 2020 to face internet sensation Jake Paul.

The Problem Child overcame Ryan Bourland with a brutal first round knockout in March.

Paul has won his last three bouts since his defeat to Tommy Fury last February.

The internet sensation will now face one of the greatest boxers of all time this summer, with Mike Tyson set to return to the ring at the age of 58.

Tyson’s last bout came in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr in 2020, of which Paul was on the undercard against former NBA player Nate Robinson.

    What’s been said?

On the announcement of the huge fight, Paul said: “It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard.

“Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons.

“Within just two and a half years of founding MVP, we’re about to produce the biggest fight in history, a fight in the biggest NFL stadium in the US, broadcast live, on the biggest streaming platform in the world – a testament to all we’ve accomplished in such a short amount of time.

“Whether you’re tuning in on Netflix or showing out in person, whether you’re team Paul or team Tyson, or whether you’re a lifelong boxing fan or watching your first fight, you’re not going to want to miss this event.”

Mike Tyson has also spoken about the fight with Paul on July 20, he said: “I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones Jr and now I plan to finish him.”

It left Iron Mike trying to locate the child’s mother.

Former heavyweight champion Iron Mike will make his return to the ring to face YouTuber Paul in an epic bout taking place on July 20.

Tyson, one of the most legendary figures in the history of boxing, will turn 58 two weeks before the fight takes place against the 27-year-old.

Fans across the world are concerned about the bout but will no doubt have been intrigued to see what both men had to say when they held a pre-fight press conference yesterday.

But the event at the Apollo Theatre in New York was bizarrely interrupted by a swearing teenager who was asking which fighter had the “higher body count”.

The child was soon identified as teen influencer and prankster Kayo Martin.

The NYC native, who has 1230,000 followers on Instagram, took full advantage when Tyson and Paul decided to take questions from the crowd.

Martin firstly asked the ‘Problem Child’: “So you think he has bigger balls? Who do you think has a bigger body count? What’s your body count Jake?”

Paul placed his head in his hands in shock before Tyson asked: “Where is this kid’s mother?”

However, that failed to stop the youngster as he pressed Paul for an answer.

He asked: “Jake, you think yours is higher?”

Martin then started unloading slang, saying: “Type s**t. We outside! Gaw Gaw. Boom b***h. Ahhh. I love you guys motherf***er.”

Paul and his brother Logan Paul, who has enjoyed success himself in boxing and is WWE’s United States champion, both made their name as social media stars in their younger days.

But they were both left confused after the event at Martin’s antics.

Logan said: “That was kid was hoot.”

That led to Jake replying: “What was up with that kid?”

Martin’s linktree bio provides little more info about him, simply saying: “Skateboarding, boxing, Day in the Life, Hoodrat shii.”

He has shared a range of different content on his Instagram page, from dangerously climbing on subway tracks and narrowly avoiding being hit to visiting New York’s delis.

Meanwhile, Tyson left a reporter repulsed after revealing his disgusting pre-fight diet.

The former ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ has been rolling back the years in the gym and has even banned himself from sex and smoking weed in training.

But that is not the only eyebrow-raising reveal that Iron Mike has made as he said that he has only been eating “raw meat”.

And UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes the disgusting claim will strike fear into Paul without a punch even being thrown.

Iron Mike, 57, will be a whopping 31 YEARS Paul’s senior when they throw down in their Texas tussle.

Fight fans around the world are worried for the safety of Tyson, given his performance in his Covid clash with Roy Jones Jr in November 2020.

Some have even sensationally claimed on social media – without any basis whatsoever – that the bout is “fixed”.

One wrote on X: “I’m predicting right now that Mike Tyson gets knocked out by Jake Paul in a fixed fight.”

And Saudi boxing kingpin Alalshikh has poked fun at those claims by urging Tyson not to follow the “script” for the July joust.

He wrote on X: “Please brother Mike, forget the script and beat this guy.”

Fight fans were quick to respond to Alalshikh’s light-hearted post, with one commenting: “Well said his Excellency.”

    Another said: “Sadly, it’s scripted.”

“But once he’s in that ring, he has to fight like his life is depending on it. Because it will be.”

“This is what I was born to do, to move up into this weight class.

Last month, the pair celebrated a year since they went public with their romance.

The Dutch beauty, 25, a silver medallist at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, has kept the Problem Child grounded and focused.

The pair got together after they began flirting on Instagram.

They went public with their romance in April 2023 , with Paul sharing a photo of them together.

“I’m Dutch now”, Paul captioned the snap which featured him holding hands with Leerdam in a carousel of pictures.

When Paul suffered the first loss of his career to Tommy Fury, Leerdam provided the perfect support for his battered ego.

She will likely be cheering his corner when he comes up against Mike Tyson on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.

    First impressions

Both Paul and Leerdam were involved in high-profile break-ups.

He was engaged to model and influencer Julia Rose, before they called it quits in 2022.

Paul joked on Valentine’s Day he was celebrating the occasion with his boxing gloves.

They began chatting, before finally agreeing to meet up.

    Coping in defeat

No boxer likes to taste defeat, especially when it happens for the first time.

Paul was, by his own admission, at his lowest ebb after he was defeated by rival Tommy Fury.

In the past, he would have no one to turn to.

But this time, dating a fellow sports star who understands competition, he was able to turn to cry on Leerdam’s shoulder.

Paul said in a YouTube video: “I have a new girlfriend which is pretty cool.

“It’s been so refreshing, she’s a world champion and I’ve just been so amazed by her and her work ethic and how much of an angel she is.

“She’s one of the most pure-hearted human beings that I have met in my life, so genuine and she has just changed my perspective and helped me coming out of this loss when I was in a dark place.

“She really was there talking about her losses and was able to relate to those things and what I was going through.

“So she’s been such a blessing; Jutta if you’re watching this… hi, you’re amazing.”

    Hints of marriage

Maybe influenced by his brother Logan, who is now engaged to model Nina Agdal, Jake has hinted at marriage with Leerdam.

Last year, he candidly spoke about the idea of settling down with Leerdam to his elder sibling on the BS w/ Jake Paul podcast.

He revealed: “It’s funny. Interestingly enough, I dream of the same thing (marriage and family) and getting to become best friends with my kids.

“Just being there all the time, which is why I work so hard, is to have the financial freedom to be able to not work when they’re born and to be with them all the time… And doing it with my wife at the time, which I believe will be Jutta.”

    She’s a good influence

As well as helping him get over defeat to Fury, Leerdam has also helped Paul maintain a winning mentality.

He admitted to us he was thankful to her for the major part she is playing in his boxing career.

Paul told SunSport: “It’s a game-changer and I can fully focus on what I want to do with the support from here.

“She can give me mental advice and coaching, even physical performance advice and it’s just been such a game-changer.

“So she holds me to that standard.”

    Power couple

While Paul harbours ambitions to become a boxing champion, Leerdam’s focus will be on the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in 2026.

He insisted that they have the potential to become the next sporting super couple, following in the footsteps of Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens or Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

In an episode of BS w/ Jake Paul, he appeared alongside Leerdam who revealed she had set the world record for the fastest time to perform 1,000 metres in speed skating, to which Paul replied: “I’m so proud of you.”

Scary footage on his Instagram showed the multimillion-pound plane violently shaking as electrical discharge crackled outside.

Paul said: “We woke up the gods of war and (there is) lightning on the plane, brother.”

Clasping his hands, the 27-year-old then makes a plea to a Greek god.

He added: “Oh s***! Zeus, I love you brother.”

Paul was flying home from his New York press conference ahead of his fight with Mike Tyson in July.

On July 20, the pair will square off in an exhibition fight that will be aired live on Netflix at the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer made it safely back to firm ground, later sharing the video.

He wrote “The way home from the presser was interesting,” followed by a laughing face emoji.

Tyson, who will be 31 YEARS Paul’s senior on fight night, didn’t mince his words in the pre-fight press conference.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion said: “I really like Jake a lot.

“But once he’s in that ring, he has to fight like his life is depending on it. Because it will be.”

Paul said of his move up in weight: “I’m a natural-born heavyweight.

Paul will be moving up to heavyweight for the first time in his brief boxing career to lock horns with ‘Iron Mike’.

And the former Disney star has undergone a dramatic body transformation for the bout, piling on several pounds of muscle and water weight.

Fight fans got their first glimpse of Paul’s new physique last week, with many impressed by his hulking frame.

Although plenty were quick to express concerns over how “The Problem Child” will carry the additional weight.

Fury got the better of Usyk in the early rounds, but just about survived a crisis in the ninth round when Usyk sent him staggering into the ropes.

Split decisions are always contentious, and Fury insisted that he deserved to win the fight.

“I believe I won that fight, I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them,” Fury said after the bout.

“We both put on a good fight. His country is at war, so people are siding with the country at war.

Tyson Fury delivers his first thoughts 🎤👀

“Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion. We’ve got a rematch clause. I’ve had a split decision loss to a good little man. We run it back in October. Well done Oleksandr.”

On social media, fans were fuming that Fury used the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an excuse for two of the judges siding with his opponent.

“Fury ABSOLUTELY TASTELESS saying they’ve picked Usyk because Ukraine are at war???” one fans wrote on X.

Another said: “‘They’re siding with the country in war’. Classy as always Tyson mate.”

A third fan commented: “He lost the fight because he spent too much time backpedaling, & pot shotting. Usyk outworked him – no matter what country is at war, It was a good decision.”

A rematch clause in the fight contract means the Fury and Usyk will meet again in October.

How long Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk will really be allowed to call themselves the 'undisputed world champion'

The winner of Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk won’t be able to call themselves undisputed champion for very long.

Fury defends his WBC belt against Usyk, who puts his WBA (super), IBF and WBO titles on the line in tonight’s monstrous contest.

The Riyadh showdown will crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999 when Lennox Lewis toppled Evander Holyfield.

But Fury or Usyk will only have undisputed status for ‘less than two weeks’.

According to boxing reporter Dan Rafael, the winner of the undisputed fight will be forced to vacate the IBF title shortly after their clash.

The IBF belt will be contested by overdue mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic, who meets Daniel Dubois on June 1.

Hrgovic, unbeaten in 17 pro bouts, is set to compete in his first world title fight since leaving the amateur ranks, where he won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.

The Croatian star boasts a big win over Zhilei Zhang as he returns to action against Dubois.

Once Fury or Usyk relinquishes the IBF strap, Hrgovic and Dubois will battle for the vacant world title.

And the winner of Hrgovic vs. Dubois is lined up to face Anthony Joshua in September.

Saudi Arabia chief Turki Alalshikh plans to match Joshua against the winner of Hrgovic vs. Dubois, which will be for the IBF title.

On The MMA Hour, Alalshikh said: “We have Joshua’s fight in September, it all depends on the result of the Hrgovic fight [with Dubois].

“Because now we have locked Wilder to Jared Anderson in the card in Los Angeles.”

Then, the winner of Joshua vs. Hrgovic/Dubois is set to face the winner of the contracted rematch between Fury and Usyk, which is tentatively scheduled for October.

So, the winner of Joshua vs. Hrgovic/Dubois will take on the winner of Fury vs. Usyk 2 in what will be another undisputed bout.

Inside Tyson Fury’s chaotic ‘rollercoaster’ life: The Gypsy King has shone a light on his manic family, come back from brink of suicide, fluxuated in weight and backtracked on retirement ahead of Usyk fight

Who is the real Tyson Fury? Over the course of his 16-year career as a boxer, it’s been difficult to put a finger on it.

The Gypsy King is an enigma of different personalities with a larger than life aura that has at times enthralled the world of boxing while leaving it frustrated and baffled on other occasions.

In truth, you never quite know what you’re going to get with Fury – the man who has regularly threatened to retire before leaping back into action and teased huge fights only to then cancel plans just days later.

The 35-year-old will face Ukrainian fighter Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia on May 18 in a fight where the winner will become undisputed heavyweight world champion, with the contest dubbed ‘The Ring of Fire’. That might also be a way to describe Fury’s topsy-turvy life and career.

Fans were given a glimpse into that very way of life after Netflix released a fly-on-the-wall documentary at his family home – titled ‘At Home With the Furys’, showing off his house in Morecambe and his interactions with Paris, their seven children, father John and Love Island star brother Tommy.

The show was positively received as viewers were treated to candid conversations and a behind the scenes look at the key people in Fury’s life, including chats between Tommy and his model girlfriend Molly-Mae Hague.

Fury – who has bipolar disorder – gave a fascinating insight into his relationship with his family, continuing his classically chaotic behaviour by inviting his father John on a trip to Italy, before changing his mind and slyly telling him the flights had been cancelled.

But shortly after the documentary was released, Fury revealed that he thought signing up to have cameras in his house was ‘a mistake’ and that he had explored ways to end their contract with Netflix mid-way through filming.

‘Yeah I wanted out, he told Capital XTRA Breakfast.’ I was a couple of weeks in [and] I’d be on the phone with my lawyers [saying], “Is there any way I can get out of this? I don’t know what I’ve signed up for again”. I never said I’d do it again, I’ve done it again, I’ve made a mistake.’

Fury even credited his bipolar as being part of his decision making process over the documentary and other aspects in his life.

‘That’s just my bipolar going up and down all the time,’ he added. ‘One minute I’m happy, the next minute I’m not and it’s very evident to see my emotional roller-coaster throughout this episode. People are going to be shocked because I can take 10 turns in an hour.’

Now Fury has been spotted filming season two of At Home With the Furys.

It’s very much a case of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ with how quickly things change with the family.

That continued the theme of Fury’s chaotic career, which saw him claim he was retired after defeating Dillian Whyte in April 2022 and that ‘no amount of money’ would lure him back – even betting Piers Morgan £1million he would not U-turn on his decision.

‘This is the truth, the gospel truth, nothing but the truth – I’m done. Every good dog has its day. It’s not about money for me. A lot of people in this world, everything is about money, and more money and more money. I’ve got enough money. I’ve got enough of everything I need.’

Shortly after, he insisted it would take £500m to tempt him out of retirement after being questioned whether he could fight either Usyk or British rival Anthony Joshua.

Fury has often threatened to retire and then made a massive U-turn – and has also contradicted himself over being motivated by money

‘You better have a big cheque book, because to bring the big ‘GK’ out of retirement… it’s going to cost,’ he said.

Of course, he did come out of retirement just eight months after initially announcing he was hanging up his gloves as he returned against Dereck Chisora – a fight which earned him a reported £26m.

He’d go on to agree a fight against Usyk the following year in 2023 – before calling it off after negotiations collapsed over a disputed purse split, even after Usyk agreed to take home 30 per cent, as he took on UFC star Francis Ngannou in a money-spinning crossover bout that saw him collect at least £50m.

Now he’s finally nailed down a date with Usyk, with his 70 per cent split set to hand him more than double his purse with Ngannou at £116m. So it is about the money after all. Fury even confirmed that as he went back on himself ahead of this fight.

‘If it was belts that drive me I’d go to Matalan and buy 50 belts,’ he said.

‘It’s the money that drives me, not the belts. I’ve been very open in my whole career telling you all it’s only about the coins and I’ll stand by it today… So for me to say to you all, “Oh, I wanna win 20 belts, it’s not about the money”, it ain’t true, is it? It ain’t true.’

His fight against Usyk (right) has been postponed a number of times and there have been questions over his desire for the showdown

It’s the classic rollercoaster Fury ride that the man himself referenced. A rollercoaster ride that has seen him go from world champion in 2015 to depression and being on the verge of suicide – before ballooning to 28 stone in weight and rising to the summit of the sport again in 2020 by dethroning feared heavyweight Deontay Wilder.

At his lowest ebb, Fury said he came close to taking his own life following his win over long-reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko in Germany after turning to drugs and alcohol and questioning what more he had left to achieve in life after such a notable high.

‘One day I woke up and thought “today’s the day I end it all”,’ he said in an ITV interview. ‘I was heading towards this bridge, I was going to smash the car into the bridge at very high speed, I just didn’t have the ambition to live any more.

‘Before I got to the bridge I heard a voice saying “don’t do this, you’re going to destroy your family’s life” and I immediately pulled the car over and that was the first time I thought, “right, now or never. I need to get well immediately”.’

That vow to turn his life around saw him shed nine stone in less than two years before making his comeback to the ring in 2018 and then things started getting better.

He returned to his charismatic self, secured more lucrative fights against the likes of Wilder before becoming heavyweight champion again.

He looks to be enjoying fighting again and is in much better shape these days – looking particularly lean in his second fight against Wilder that saw him claim his world title belt.

Fury has battled back from the brink of suicide and his weight has fluctuated over the years

But his weight has fluctuated, much like his state of mind across his career, and there have been times when Fury’s desire to continue in the sport has looked questionable, particularly after looking off the pace and out of shape when he very narrowly beat Ngannou – a UFC fighter in his first pro boxing fight – in Saudi Arabia last year.

His own dad admitted that Fury’s conditioning needed improving and that he was ‘declining’ in his last few fights.

‘In my opinion, Tyson needs a bit more time to get his conditioning right and his weight right,’ Fury Snr said.

‘For me it looked like he had lost 20lbs of muscle last time. Something was wrong.

‘For my money, his last three fights, I have seen a bit of decline. Not a decline in ability but a decline in strength, power and physical condition. I don’t know what they are doing up there, you have to address it. He didn’t look himself out in Saudi.

‘He didn’t look right, everything had changed about him, his demeanour, his body. I was puzzled.’

The Gypsy King now looks like he’s in ripped condition as the May 18 Usyk fight draws closer

But just like he always does, Fury has turned it around again right at the last minute.

Ahead his fight against Usyk – the feared southpaw fighter who has never lost – his opponent’s camp questioned whether he would even turn up after postponing their scheduled bout earlier this year with a freak cut above his eye.

After facing accusations he was ‘scared’ and that his ‘legs had gone’ from fans and pundits, Fury hit back at any suggestions he was done with the sport as he showed off pictures of his trimmed physique just weeks out from the fight.

It’s hard to deny Fury now looks the most ripped he’s ever been for this fight having finally upped his intensity for what looks to be the biggest fight of his life.

After claims that he barely trained for the inexperienced Ngannou – who floored him in the third round – Fury’s sparring partner Martin Bakole confirmed those theories by revealing how things looked from his perspective during the training camp.

‘If you watch my interview [at the event] when people are asking me, I was saying I will not be surprised to see Ngannou drop Tyson Fury, because, to be honest, Tyson was not 100 per cent focused in the gym,’ he said.

‘I’ve never seen Tyson training like that. He was doing four rounds, six rounds in the gym for sparring.

‘That’s not the Tyson Fury I know when he was preparing for Klitschko, Chisora, and Dillian Whyte. This was different.’

Fury has surprised us again and looks to have put those doubts behind him – for now at least.

This time there is seemingly nothing to stop Fury from fully focusing on this fight. He has come through difficult moments in the past.

Just before his huge third fight against Wilder in 2021, his newborn daughter Athena was in intensive care and put on a ventilator.

There is full focus on this fight after he and wife Paris dealt with a series of tragedies and setbacks

He and wife Paris had already endured the horror of a stillbirth in 2014 – at the same time Fury’s uncle Hughie passed away – while the mother of his children also suffered a miscarriage in 2018 head of his big comeback fight against Sefer Seferi.

And in 2022, Fury’s cousin Rico Burton was stabbed to death in Altrincham following a fight outside a bar.

Fury released a statement, calling for an end to knife crime, saying: ‘Life is very precious and it can be taken away very quick enjoy every moment… RIP Rico Burton may the lord God grant you a good place in heaven. see you soon.’

Without a doubt, Fury’s life and career has carried more ups and downs than any rollercoaster but with a rematch against Usyk around the corner, plus a craved fight against British rival Anthony Joshua in the offing – plus another season of his documentary – there is bound to be a few more twists and turns in his story to come.
