The late Cecil Beaton, a renowned society photographer and master of witty remarks, once famously described the Queen Mother as “a marshmallow made on a welding machine.” This vivid imagery has become a memorable phrase, and it’s worth revisiting in the context of the 21st century.

While the Queen Mother, who was a loyal customer of Gordon’s and whose passing reportedly impacted the company’s stock price, may never have met her great-granddaughter-in-law Kate, the Princess of Wales, it is reasonable to suggest that Kate is her natural heir. Although the 41-year-old princess may not share the Queen Mother’s penchant for early morning cocktails, she undoubtedly embodies a thoroughly modern interpretation of the “marshmallow” persona.

Evidence of this can be found in the recent revelation that Kate played a leading role in delivering one of the most significant blows to Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, in recent years. (Arguably, the second-biggest blow after he lost his favorite Xbox controller during the move to Los Angeles.)

The scene: A sitting room of sorts at Kensington Palace. (If it’s the one featured in a handful of photos of Kate’s home, it appears to have been designed by a 63-year-old named Marjorie with an enduring fondness for mahogany and priceless knick-knacks.)

The Oprah interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in March 2021 sent shockwaves through the royal family and the world. The Duchess of Sussex directly suggested that the royal household had concerns about race, implying that decisions regarding titles and security for their child may have been influenced by racial considerations. She claimed there were “conversations” about their unborn baby’s skin color.

Of all the allegations made during the two-hour interview, including the palace’s disregard for Meghan’s mental health and prioritizing self-interest over their well-being, the issue of race posed the greatest threat to the monarchy. As the head of the Commonwealth, an association representing a third of the world’s population, mostly people of color, the late Queen Elizabeth II was expected to uphold values of inclusivity and multiculturalism, which Britain prides itself on.

The interview reignited discussions about race and the role of the monarchy in modern society, challenging the institution’s commitment to diversity and representation.

The revelations surrounding the aftermath of the Sussexes’ explosive Oprah interview offer an insightful glimpse into the inner workings of the royal family. According to Valentine Low’s updated book “Courtiers,” this interview prompted a crucial decision for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Low’s account reveals that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge convened with their officials to discuss how to respond to the incendiary allegations made by Harry and Meghan. While a mild statement expressing familial love had been drafted, a debate ensued over whether a more assertive intervention was necessary.

The crux of the matter centered on whether to take the high road and extend an olive branch, portraying the Sussexes as “much loved members of the family,” or to directly address and offer a perspective on the claims made during the interview.

Significantly, Low reports that William and Kate were in complete alignment on this issue, underscoring the unity and cohesion within their household when navigating such delicate matters.

This behind-the-scenes account sheds light on the intricate decision-making processes within the royal family, particularly when faced with potentially damaging allegations from within their ranks.

The insider’s revelation sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics surrounding the response to the Sussex allegations. According to the source, both Prince William and Kate Middleton were united in their stance that the institution needed to address the claims directly and firmly.

The insider stated, “They wanted a tougher approach,” indicating a desire for a more assertive response. The source added, “They were both of one mind that we needed something that said that the institution did not accept a lot of what had been said.”

While the couple appeared to be on the same page, it was reportedly the Princess of Wales (then the Duchess of Cambridge) who took a more adamant stance, insisting that the “devastating Sussex salvos” could not be ignored or dodged.

With Kate as the driving force, the initial draft was sent back to the staffers, and the now-iconic line “recollections may vary” was added. Despite concerns from some within the Palace that the phrase might “rile” the Sussexes, Kate remained resolute, reportedly stating, “History will judge this statement, and unless this phrase or a phrase like it is included, everything that they have said will be taken as true.”

The insider’s account highlights Kate’s influential role in shaping the Palace’s response, ensuring that the allegations were addressed head-on and that the institution’s perspective was clearly articulated.

The Oprah interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent shockwaves through the British royal family. Approximately 40 hours after it aired in the United States, Buckingham Palace issued a statement addressing the couple’s claims, particularly those regarding race. The statement’s notable line about “recollections may vary” signaled that the royals would not let the Sussexes’ narrative go unchallenged.

This response represented a clear pushback against Harry and Meghan’s version of events, denying them the opportunity to monopolize the truth or own the narrative solely. It set the stage for royal biographers to begin writing new books, offering alternative perspectives.

Notably, the statement is attributed to Kate Middleton’s involvement, described by a source as “yet another example of how Kate is often far steelier than she appears.” The source praised Kate’s subtle approach, suggesting she is “playing the long game” with her sights set on eventually becoming Queen.

The Palace’s statement and Kate’s alleged role in crafting it demonstrate the royals’ determination to counter the Sussexes’ claims and maintain control over the narrative surrounding the family’s internal dynamics.

The recent comments about Kate Middleton’s growing influence within the royal family offer an insightful perspective on her evolving role. Despite her public image as a nurturing figure, adorned in florals and interacting warmly with children, there is evidence to suggest that Kate is a strategic and calculated operator, keenly focused on establishing her legacy.

Over the past 12 years since joining the royal ranks, Kate has demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for navigating the complex dynamics of the monarchy. She has skillfully built reserves of authority and respect, transforming herself from a decorative presence into a genuine power player.

The observation that appearances can be deceiving holds true in Kate’s case. While her signature bouncy hairstyle may be her most recognizable trait, she is a formidable force not to be underestimated. Her ability to navigate the realpolitik of royalty has allowed her to wield significant influence within the institution.

This analysis sheds light on Kate’s strategic approach and her determination to shape her lasting impact, challenging the perception of her as merely an ornamental figure. It serves as a reminder that public personas can often belie the true depth and ambition of individuals, particularly within the intricate world of the monarchy.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in an emotional ceremony in May 2018, but their big day appeared almost ruined by tense arguments and a devastating blow from Meghan’s father behind the scenes

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018 looked like something out of a fairytale – but behind-the-scenes painted a very different picture of the couple’s nuptials and there are still many unanswered questions.

The couple were plagued with drama in the run-up to their summer wedding, which was a star-studded affair at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, with famous faces such as David and Victoria Beckham, as well as Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney and Idris Elba, in attendance.

While Harry and Meghan were busy putting the finishing touches to their big day, they were hit with one crisis after another.

From sister-in-law spats to a transatlantic feud with the bride’s father, the couple were left in tears as they dealt with the ongoing drama right out of a soap opera. As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex prepare to celebrate their wedding anniversary on Saturday, we take a look at the unanswered questions that still frustrate royal fans six years after the nuptials.

Why didn’t Thomas Markle turn up to his daughter’s wedding?
Meghan was heartbroken when it emerged her father wouldn’t be walking her down the aisle on her wedding day, and she ended up asking her father-in-law Charles to accompany her instead. The drama began just weeks before the big day when Thomas was spotted brushing up on his knowledge of the UK in snaps taken of him in Mexico, where he lives. He was then photographed getting a suit fitted, as well as searching images of his daughter and son-in-law at an internet cafe, but the secret was out just five days before the wedding – Thomas was accused of staging the photos.

He admitted he had staged the pictures, and apologised to Meghan for the “stupid and hammy” snaps. Speculation surrounded the troubled father, as many predicted he wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the special day after working with the paparazzi, who Harry and Meghan loathe. Sadly, tragedy struck when Thomas suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised, leaving his role in the wedding hanging by a thread. Meghan and Harry sent dozens of text messages to Thomas while he was in hospital, with the former Suits star even offering up her security team to protect him.

Charles was on hand to sweetly accompany his daughter-in-law down the aisle
“If u love Meg and want to make it right please call me as there are two other options which don’t involve u having to speak to the media, who incidentally created this whole situation. So please call me so I can explain. Meg and I are not angry, we just need to speak to u. Thanks,” Harry wrote in one text message to Thomas, but the couple failed to get through to him. After undergoing heart surgery one day before the wedding, he was unable to fly over to London to walk his daughter down the aisle, and his final attempt to contact Meghan was in the early hours of her wedding day, when she had a missed call from her father.

Thomas has since taken part in multiple interviews criticising his estranged daughter, and she was left devastated when a private letter she sent to him after he missed their wedding was made public. Last year, he claimed he would no longer take part in interviews about his daughter, and after suffering a stroke, has pleaded with Meghan and Harry to let him see their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Did Meghan and Harry get married in secret before their big ceremony?
During their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, the couple alleged they had tied the knot in a secret ceremony, just days before exchanging vows in St George’s Chapel with millions around the world watching. “Three days before our wedding, we got married – no one knows that. We called the archbishop and we just said, look, this thing, this spectacle, is for the world, but we want our union between us,” Meghan explained, as Harry added it was “just the three of us” in their backyard.

Many suggested the small ceremony wasn’t legal as it would have required witnesses, as stated by law, and the former official who issued the marriage licence to Harry and Meghan called the former actress “confused and misinformed”. Stephen Bolton told The Sun: “They did not marry three days earlier in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury… it was a simple rehearsal.” The Archbishop himself, Justin Welby, also dismissed Meghan’s claims, and said he would have committed a serious criminal offence if he had conducted the ceremony at St George’s Chapel under false pretences.

“The legal wedding was on the Saturday,” he told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. “I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it knowing it was false.” He refused to divulge any information about what his other meetings with Harry and Meghan were about, and said: “If any of you ever talk to a priest, you expect them to keep that talk confidential.”

Harry wrote briefly about the ‘secret’ ceremony that took place before the wedding and instead chose to describe it as a “blessing” in his memoir Spare, which was released last year. “The archbishop reached the official part, spoke the few words that made us the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, titles bestowed by Granny, and he joined us until death parted us, though he’d already done similar days earlier, in our garden, a small ceremony, just the two of us, [dogs] Guy and Pula the only witnesses,” he recalled.

Did Meghan make Kate cry in the run up to the wedding?
The sisters-in-law have had a tumultuous relationship, and as the big day approached, tempers began to fray. According to reports, Kate had been left in floods of tears over Meghan’s attitude toward the flower girl dresses, and palace officials failed to release any statement dismissing the rumours.

The Duchess of Sussex addressed the incident during the tell-all interview with Oprah, as she claimed it was Kate who had upset her over Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress. She claimed there was a disagreement over the fitting and alteration of the white gown, which was made and hand-sewn in France. However, Meghan admitted Kate had apologised and sent her flowers and the matter was dealt with.

Kate didn’t look too happy during the wedding ceremony
In Harry’s explosive memoir Spare, he shared text messages he claimed were sent between Kate and Meghan in the run-up to their wedding day which revealed the Princess of Wales demanded that her daughter’s dress be remade, and refused Meghan’s pleas to get it altered by a tailor that was ready and waiting. “Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. And the wedding is in four days!” Harry wrote. “Yes, Kate, I know,” he said Meghan replied.

Meghan ‘sparked feud’ with Camilla after she deliberately ‘stole the limelight’ from her

According to reports, Meghan Markle allegedly sparked tensions with Queen Camilla by releasing a set of photos that coincided with Camilla’s speech on domestic violence in March 2020. The photos, taken during Meghan’s visit to the National Theatre as its patron, were promptly shared on the Sussexes’ Instagram page the same day as Camilla’s speech.

Sources claim that Meghan insisted on publishing the photos immediately, despite requests to delay their release to avoid overshadowing Camilla’s important address. The photos depicted Meghan inspecting the theatre’s Immersive Storytelling Studio, showcasing her in a white blouse and pencil skirt.

Insiders allege that Meghan’s decision to upload the images on the same day as Camilla’s speech was deliberate, accusing her of trying to “steal Camilla’s limelight.” It is reported that senior royals had asked Meghan to postpone the release, but she “refused to listen,” leaving Camilla “very upset” as the photos potentially overshadowed her long-awaited domestic violence speech.

The commentary from royal expert Duncan Larcombe on Friday regarding the Duchess of Cornwall’s potential reaction to the photographs raises pertinent considerations. As he articulated to The Sun Online, “The ‘men in grey suits’ are assiduous in their efforts to circumvent diary clashes and the prospect of one member of the royal family overshadowing another on the same day.”

Larcombe asserted, “Camilla would be justified at being miffed, to say the least. However, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue their endeavors without due regard for the remainder of the Royal family’s engagements, these types of ‘clashes’ are inevitable.”

The post, previously uploaded to the now-defunct account of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, was accompanied by a caption that read: “Yesterday, The Duchess of Sussex, Royal patron of the National Theatre, visited the Immersive Storytelling Studio in London, where emerging technology like Virtual Reality is being utilized to develop novel forms of emotive storytelling. Recently, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also visited Stanford University, where part of their learning journey encompassed a virtual reality presentation that enables the user to experience life through another person’s perspective.”

The endeavor of employing virtual reality technology to foster enhanced interpersonal connections and empathy transcending boundaries of race, age, or nationality is a commendable objective. The image depicts the Duchess alongside Nubiya Brandon and her hologram, a feature of the National’s exhibition ‘All Kinds of Limbo,’ currently on display at the esteemed Tate Modern.

While the image garnered substantial engagement, amassing over 50,000 likes, it elicited a diverse range of responses from social media users. Certain individuals expressed criticism, characterizing the Duchess’s presence as emanating a “bad vibe,” while others deemed her conduct as “cringey.” This incident occurred during the period when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to the United Kingdom for a series of engagements prior to their formal departure from their roles as working members of the Royal Family.

Prince William kept big secret from Kate Middleton for three weeks fearing ‘a lot of trouble’

The announcement of the engagements of Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, garnered significant attention and anticipation from the public. These events marked the commencement of a period of heightened interest and speculation surrounding the impending royal nuptials.

In November 2010, Prince William and Kate Middleton formally announced their engagement, posing for photographs at St. James’s Palace in London. This revelation served as the catalyst for months of eager anticipation leading up to their wedding ceremony. Similarly, in November 2017, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shared the joyous news of their engagement with the world.

As Robert Hardman, a renowned royal expert, aptly described, the announcement of a royal engagement is akin to a “starting gun,” igniting a wave of excitement and curiosity among the public. From the design of the bridal gown to the selection of bridesmaids and best man, and even the location of the ceremony, every detail becomes a subject of intense interest and speculation. The public’s enthusiasm often manifests in the form of street parties and celebratory gatherings, reflecting the profound significance of these events.

Indeed, the engagements of Prince William and Kate Middleton, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, captured the imagination of the nation and the world, ushering in a period of fervent anticipation and celebration.

The newly engaged Prince William and Kate Middleton provided insights into their romantic engagement during an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby. They revealed that William proposed to Kate during a holiday in Kenya, a location with sentimental significance as it was where Prince Charles had taken William and his brother Harry shortly after their mother Princess Diana’s passing. William explained his choice, stating, “When deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee.”

William also shared that he had carried Princess Diana’s engagement ring, crafted by Royal jeweller Garrard, in his rucksack for three weeks leading up to the proposal, jokingly adding, “I knew if this thing disappeared, I’d be in a lot of trouble.” Their official engagement photo was captured at St James’s Palace by renowned photographer Mario Testino, who admitted to waiting patiently for an extended period to capture the perfect shot, saying, “I waited a long time, an hour or two, to make that picture perfect.”

The iconic image naturally accentuated the ring, featuring a resplendent Ceylon sapphire encircled by 14 scintillating diamonds, which was resized for an optimal fit by the esteemed jewelers G. Collins and Sons.

Seven years hence, it was William’s brother, Prince Harry, who precipitated a media frenzy with his engagement announcement to the American actress Meghan Markle. They joyously unveiled their news from the sun-drenched gardens of Kensington Palace in November 2017.

“I bore witness to the scene in the garden, and it felt like the dawn of a brand new era for the royals,” reminisces author Robert. “The excitement was palpable, and everyone yearned to partake in it.”

Meghan’s engagement ring boasted a Botswana diamond flanked by two smaller stones from Princess Diana’s collection. In 2019, Meghan bestowed her ring with an update, replacing the original gold band with one adorned with a delicate pave of precious gems.

  • Why there’s ‘tension’ between Kate Middleton’s parents and Charles and Camilla

Why there’s ‘tension’ between Kate Middleton’s parents and Charles and Camilla

Why there’s ‘tension’ between Kate Middleton’s parents and Charles and Camilla

It has been reported that there is an alleged ‘tension’ between Kate Middleton’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and their in-laws, King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The Middletons are known to be very involved grandparents, maintaining a close relationship with their royal grandchildren. According to reports, this level of closeness has purportedly caused friction between the King and Queen and the Middleton family. It is important to note that these claims have not been officially confirmed or denied by the parties involved.

The dynamics between the royal family and the Middletons have been a topic of discussion among royal experts. In Channel 5’s documentary “When the Middletons Met the Monarchy,” commentators Jennie Bond, Tom Quinn, and Richard Kay shed light on the potential tensions arising from the Middletons’ influence on the younger royals.

According to Tom Quinn, the Middleton family is likely to have a more significant influence on Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis compared to the royal family itself. He stated, “I suspect everyone thinks that in terms of the children, the royal family will inevitably have the most influence, but that is entirely wrong. It will be the Middletons that have the influence, because the royal family is too formal, it’s too stuck in its ways.”

Jennie Bond further elaborated on the potential for tension, suggesting that Kate Middleton may turn to her mother, Carole Middleton, for help, advice, and guidance before seeking input from King Charles and Queen Camilla. “I suppose there is a little tension at times between who gets to see the grandkids the most. Kate will always turn to Carole for help, advice guidance, and just get together and romping around with the kids – possibly before she would get together with Camilla and Charles,” Bond said.

The royal experts highlighted the Middletons’ perceived influence on the younger generation of royals and the potential strain it may cause due to the royal family’s traditional ways and the desire for involvement from the King and Queen.

The relationship between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Middleton family has been highlighted in recent reports. According to Richard Kay’s comments, Prince William values his connection with Kate’s parents, Mike and Carole Middleton, considering them an important part of his family alongside his own children.

Additionally, it has been reported that Carole Middleton played a crucial role in supporting Kate during the early stages of parenthood. In a documentary titled “Kate Middleton: Heir We Go Again,” Channel 5’s royal correspondent Simon Vigar revealed that Carole was very hands-on, particularly when Kate experienced severe morning sickness. Vigar stated that Carole was instrumental in caring for Kate and helping with the upbringing of Prince George during that challenging period, providing invaluable support to the new parents.

These insights shed light on the close-knit bond between the Cambridge family and the Middletons, highlighting the importance of familial support in the royal household.

  • Long before Prince Harry’s bestselling memoir Spare sent shockwaves through the Royal Family, another royal wrote and released a tell-all book that caused a serious ‘sensation’

Long before Prince Harry’s bestselling memoir Spare sent shockwaves through the Royal Family, another royal wrote and released a tell-all book that caused a serious ‘sensation’

When Prince Harry released his memoir Spare, he lifted the lid on what life was really like behind closed doors in the Royal Family – from his perspective.

Breaking down in glorious technicolour his relationship with his brother Prince William and father King Charles, Harry didn’t hold back in his tome, and sources have even claimed that some of the allegations he made about his stepmother Queen Camilla upset King Charles so much it remains a kind of blockage in the father and son’s path to reconciling.
Harry's memoir on a book store shelf
However, while it might have seemed like Harry’s memoir broke down boundaries the usually formal royals are keen to uphold in their public lives, he was by no means the first member of the House of Windsor to write a tell-all, with an even more senior royal doing it decades before and causing an absolute “sensation”.

The royal in question is none other than the former King Edward VIII, who sent shockwaves across the country when he abdicated the throne in 1936, after less than a year on the throne, with only 325 days as monarch. The abdication crisis saw Edward torn between his duties as King and his love for American divorcee Wallis Simpson – who he had met a few years before during her marriage to businessman Ernest Simpson. He was unable to marry Wallis and remain King and Supreme Governor of the Church of England, and eventually decided to choose love over his royal duty.

After Edward abdicated, he was made the Duke of Windsor, and spent the rest of his life outside of the UK in exile, alongside his wife Wallis. Ten years after he decided to give up the throne in order to be able to marry the woman he loved, he released a shocking memoir entitled ‘A King’s Story’ that was ghostwritten by journalist Charles Murphy.

Royal expert Robert Jobson noted that much like Harry, when the exiled former King Edward VIII wrote a memoir, it generated a huge amount of interest. He said it was “published to a media storm in the 50s. It caused a sensation.”

Murphy spent three years with the Duke of Windsor working on the book, and decades after the shocking memoir’s release, author Jane Marguerite Tippett came across the journalist’s and Edward’s original notes and book drafts in the Boston University Library. “[There was] box upon box of notes and memos, including Edward’s own first drafts scrawled on yellow legal pads, much of which never [have been published before]”, the author explained, writing for the Mail Online.

This material was turned into a new text, called, Once a King: The Lost Memoir of Edward VIII published in 2023, and saw the former King be incredibly candid about his royal life and decision to pursue Wallis, even while she was still married.

“I knew I was falling in love with another man’s wife. When found myself falling in love should have withdrawn. But remarkable business about love is that it happens before one knows it,” it reads.

Wallis Simpson also released a memoir a few years after her husband, called The Heart Has Its Reasons, which explored her relationship with the former King – and was also reportedly ghostwritten by Murphy.

The Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of Britain until his abdication, in New York with a first edition copy of his book 'A King's Story
    Edward’s book caused a ‘sensation’

Another shocking royal book that was written decades before Harry’s was the memoir of the late Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nanny Marion Crawford. While Time Magazine noted that the final text of The Little Princesses: The Intimate Story of HRH Princess Elizabeth and HRH Princess Margaret by Their Governess was “gossipy but quite innocuous by today’s standards” – adding “the nursery secrets that Crawfie revealed were hardly earth-shattering” – trust between the former staff member and the Royal Family was destroyed. Its publication was seen by the Firm as a massive betrayal, and they quickly cut all ties with Crawford.

Although Harry’s memoir Spare may have used a more contemporary lens – with strikingly informal revelations about his frost-bitten penis and loss of virginity dominating headlines – these previously sensational books show that interest in the private lives of the Royal Family has long been a booming industry.

According to Life & Style, the Princess of Wales confides in Harry about her battle with cancer even though he leaked their private matters in his interviews and bombshell memoir, Spare.

While the two haven’t been seen together since the Duke of Sussex moved to US with his wife, an insider has claimed that the duo have reestablished contact.

At first, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex was “blindsided and felt, maybe, a bit betrayed,” however, due to gravity of Kate’s diagnosis, the former star set aside her feelings.

Meghan Markle gushed over her two “chatty, sweet” children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie during her trip to Nigeria.
The Duchess of Sussex, 42, spoke candidly about motherhood during a panel discussion about women in leadership on Saturday, May 11, according to People. Meghan further addressed how she balances raising children and pursuing her career.

Meghan, who shares Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 4, with husband Prince Harry, recounted a conversation she had with her mentor Bonnie Hammer, vice chairman of NBCUniversal, while she was still starring on the resurgent USA drama Suits.

“She invited me to have breakfast, and I thought this was just the biggest deal in the world,” Meghan said. “And I asked her that exact question. I said, ‘How do you find the balance?’ And she said, ‘You don’t, you’ll never find the balance.’”

She added, “And this was before I was married. This was before I had children. This is before all the things in my life have certainly had a plot twist,” referencing her marriage to Harry.

“What I think that means now is that that balance will always change for you … What seems balanced 10 years ago is going to shift,” Meghan said. “And so being a mom has always been a dream of mine. And I’m so fortunate that we have two beautiful, healthy, very chatty, sweet children.” She added, “I love being a mom.”

Harry, 39, and Meghan kicked off their first official tour of Nigeria on Friday, May 10, with a visit to a school in the capital city of Abuja. While speaking to a group of students at the Lightway Academy, Meghan recounted an emotional conversation she had with her daughter.

“Our daughter, Lili, she’s much, much tinier than you guys. She’s about to turn three,” she said. “And a few weeks ago she looked at me and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. And she [goes], ‘Mama, I see me in you.’”

Meghan added that while Lilibet was speaking “really literally,” she “hung onto those words in a very different way.” She said to the students, “I thought, yes, I do see me in you, and you see me in you. As I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well.”

Harry and Meghan’s three-day visit to the African country also serves as the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Invictus Games, co-founded by Harry to honor wounded military veterans. On their second day in Nigeria, the couple attended a volleyball game hosted by Nigeria: Unconquered, a charity affiliated with the Invictus Games.
