The Monaco GP weekend is no stranger to red flags and this weekend was no different. The premier league got away scot-free initially with many big incidents in F2 and F3. Until of course, the first lap of the F1 race on Sunday. With three big incidents scattered across the grid in the opening minutes of the race, Lewis Hamilton wagged his finger at Mercedes.

During such a chaotic opening lap, even the commentators struggled to keep up with what was happening on the track. First, Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz briefly touched, but it was enough to puncture the Ferrari’s tire. As Sainz brought out the yellow flags after parking his car, the camera panned to debris scattered around the track.

Magnussen: “From my point of view, I had a good part of my front on Perez’s rear.”

The horrific sight resulted from a three-car collision between Sergio Perez and the two Haases. A bold move from Magnussen saw him rear-end a sandwiched Perez, who rammed into Hulkenberg’s car ahead of him. While all drivers were safe, Perez bore the brunt of the impact with his Red Bull obliterated.

And finally, the Alpine of Esteban Ocon broke the golden rule of F1: Never crash into your teammate. Surely, while discussing race strategy and tires to start on, Lewis Hamilton might’ve had an intuition about these things.

Credit it to his many years in the sport, but Hamilton knew what he was doing. Looking on at the storm on track, a stoic Hamilton simply radioed in: “I told you.”

    Lewis Hamilton unhappy with Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton made a pretty calculated prediction with his team because it is not uncommon for red flags to spice things up in Monaco. If it wasn’t for the Perez-Magnussen-Hulkenberg incident, something would’ve surely happened and the three incidents witnessed today are proof of it.

In fact, Hamilton’s radio suggests that he was not on the same page with the strategy. He started on the hard tires and shifted to mediums after the red flag. Had it been flipped, Hamilton could’ve made the most of the hards after the restart.

Lewis Hamilton says he doesn’t anticipate being ahead of George in qualifying this year. Rachel asks “why all year?” and he just shrugs and says “we’ll see.” pic.twitter.com/4ArWQqIz1K

    — deni (@fiagirly) May 25, 2024

This also comes at a time when Hamilton has openly suggested tensions between him and the team after qualifying on Saturday. After having been out-qualified by his teammate, Hamilton hinted at something fishy. “I don’t anticipate being ahead of George in qualifying this year.” When asked why Hamilton thought so, he added, “We’ll see.”

While one would assume experience and expertise as high value, Mercedes continues to fail in utilizing them. Maybe Ferrari will?

Meghan & Harry fail to stick to royal protocol after keeping over 20 gifts from Nigeria tour – but Kate and Wills can’t

MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry undertook a three-day tour of Nigeria last weekend and certainly didn’t leave empty-handed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were given over 20 special gifts during their visit and they were able to take them home after no longer having to follow royal protocol.

The couple were showered with an array of presents, including jewellery, artwork and clothing.

Usually royal protocol means family members can’t accept some gifts given to them during visits.

The official royal policy states that gifts from individuals not known to the royals are to be refused “where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself”.

Gifts that can be accepted are flowers, food and books, if they cost less than £150.

It adds: “In all cases, and particularly on official overseas trips, organisations and individuals should be discouraged from offering extravagant gifts, i.e. gifts of high monetary value.

“Whilst always remaining sensitive to local custom, Households should explore alternative gestures of goodwill during preliminary discussions about engagements.”

In terms of gifts offered by commercial enterprises in the UK, they should “normally be declined, unless they are offered as a souvenir of an official visit to the enterprises’ premises, to mark a Royal marriage or other special personal occasion.”

The policy states: “When gifts are accepted, the consent of the Member of The Royal Family should be contingent upon the enterprise undertaking not to exploit the gift for commercial purposes.”

All presents that are accepted by the Royal Family are logged on a strict record, with many being housed under the Royal Collection or placed on a loan with a reputable organisation.

While Prince William and Kate Middleton will have to follow the strict guidelines for any royal tours they carry out, Meghan and Harry have more freedom.

The couple stepped back as senior working royals in 2020, and now live in California with their two kids, Archie, five, and Lilibet, two.

Therefore, the Nigeria trip was in a private capacity, despite many experts hailing it as a “faux royal tour”.

During the trip, Harry was gifted two paintings – one of his late mum, Princess Diana, and another of him and Meghan.

He also was given clothing, including a traditional Nigerian waistcoat and a Hula cap.

Meanwhile, Meghan was given a bouquet of roses by a young girl and a wildlife drawing.

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex watched a volleyball match take place, they were then given traditional scarves that boasted the colours of the Nigerian flag.

They also got complete Nigerian outfits and personalised T-shirts which read “Harry Dreams Big” and “Meghan Dreams Big.”

    Rules on royal gifting

THE guidelines and procedures are designed to promote uniform practice throughout the Royal Households with regard to gifts defined as official.

Gifts offered by commercial enterprises in the UK should normally be declined, unless they are offered as a souvenir of an official visit to the enterprises’ premises, to mark a Royal marriage or other special personal occasion. When gifts are accepted, the consent of the Member of The Royal Family should be contingent upon the enterprise undertaking not to exploit the gift for commercial purposes.

Gifts offered by private individuals living in the UK not personally known to the Member of The Royal Family should be refused where there are concerns about the propriety or motives of the donor or the gift itself. Gifts in this category may be accepted in the following categories: Flowers, foodstuff and other consumable items (within reasonable quantities); Copies of books presented by the author, provided the subject matter is not controversial; and, Other items of small monetary value, i.e. items costing less than £150.

Meghan received a shawl to match her gorgeous, yellow Carolina Herrera gown on the final day of the tour.

She also was given some beautiful traditional Nigerian coral drop earrings and the Sussexes also got some wooden beaded necklaces.

One other gift they received was a large mirror that featured a painting of the couple on the back.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had been on what they labelled an “unforgettable” trip to Nigeria, were snapped back home today.

As the couple left Nigeria they expressed their “deepest gratitude” for the communities’ “tremendous hospitality”.

They jetted back to the United States after they watched a charity exhibition match at Lagos Polo Club.

Harry and Meghan spent three days in the West African country, meeting with locals and leaders.

While there they unveiled a partnership between their Archewell Foundation and the non-profit Giants of Africa, which aims to empower young people through sport.

The first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix featured a massive crash that took three cars out of the race. Kevin Magnussen attempted an optimistic move on Sergio Perez at Beau Rivage, but with no room on the outside, he ended up colliding with the Mexican. As a result of their collision, they also took Nico Hulkenberg out. While the stewards deemed their collision as a racing incident, Magnussen blamed Perez for the same.

As quoted by Formula Racers’ X (formerly Twitter) handle, Magnussen said, “From my point of view, I had a good part of my front on Perez’s rear. When he went to the wall, I just got pushed into the wall and made contact with him. I trusted he was gonna leave a space, for me, since I was there”.

The collision between Perez and Magnussen resulted in massive damage to the former’s car. Moreover, since the barriers needed extensive repair, the race was eventually red-flagged. It took approximately over half an hour to repair the barriers, and now the race is back underway.

16 cars are now competing, with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon as the other driver who was knocked out of the race. The Frenchman will play no further part after he had an incident of his own with his teammate Pierre Gasly.

Among all the drivers who are knocked out of the race, Nico Hulkenberg was perhaps the most innocent victim.

Nico Hulkenberg believes he was a victim of Kevin Magnussen’s racing incident

After his DNF, Hulkenberg gave an interview but chose to blame neither Perez nor Magnussen for the incident.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the German said,

“It was a typical lap-one racing accident. Two drivers who both didn’t want to bail out and didn’t give enough room on a tight track like Monaco, and I was the unlucky victim there”.

Since the stewards deemed the lap one collision as a racing incident, Kevin Magnussen will get a huge reprieve. The Danish driver currently has 10 penalty points on his license and is just two penalty points away from receiving a race ban. With the stewards not holding him responsible for the lap one incident, he will live to fight another day for now at least.

The 2024 Monaco GP has seen immense jeopardy with crashes and collisions on the first lap itself. However, for Max Verstappen, the race has been as uninteresting as it can be, driving in sixth place. After a lengthy red flag, the Dutchman switched to medium tires, having started on the hards and so did George Russell ahead of him. However, the Mercedes driver is driving very slowly to save his tires and Verstappen is unimpressed.

The three-time champion came on his radio to say, “This is boring really, I should’ve brought my pillow”. Max Verstappen has not really been used to being stuck in the middle of the pack in the past two seasons.

The 26-year-old has dominated races by leading and disappearing into the distance after starting on pole. Sadly, he could not replicate his qualifying heroics this season in Monaco as Red Bull have struggled with their car’s handling all weekend.

Thus, Verstappen had to opt for an alternative strategy to make his way up from P6 in the Grand Prix. Even the Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton did the same, switching to medium tires during the red flag.

However, as per Sky Sports F1’s Anthony Davidson, Russell’s strategy could influence the Monaco GP strategy immensely. Apparently, the #63 driver’s slow driving has created a massive gap to Lando Norris in fourth place.

While it doesn’t help the Mercedes drivers and Verstappen much, Norris and McLaren could benefit big time. Davidson mentioned how Charles Leclerc and Ferrari leading the race could lose out if the British team pulls an undercut by pitting Norris.

What Charles Leclerc needs to do to secure his maiden Monaco GP win

Charles Leclerc did a brilliant job of surviving the two race starts at the 2024 Monaco GP. While Oscar Piastri has run him close, the Monegasque seems set to win his maiden home race, unless something drastic happens.

As Davidson mentioned, Leclerc doesn’t need to push too much and get away from Russell’s group of medium-tire runners. If he can back the pack up and avoid giving Norris or Piastri a free pit-stop window, the Ferrari driver can easily cruise to victory in the Principality.

Though as Verstappen stated, the 2024 Monaco GP is quite processional with no action so far. Unless a safety car spices things up further, all drivers are cruising to the chequered flag, managing their pace and tires.

After having been out-qualified by Mercedes teammate George Russell for the seventh time this season in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton made some shocking remarks to the press. The 39-year-old’s comments seemed to suggest that the Mercedes camp is divided ever since he announced that he would be moving to Ferrari next year. While the loyalties may have shifted in the Brackley team, Hamilton’s former physiotherapist, Angela Cullen, has sent her best wishes to the seven-time champion ahead of his race in Monaco.

Cullen took to Instagram and wrote, “Race day: Monico GP, Indy500 @lewishamilton @marcusarmstrong”. Although Cullen’s post is short, it is enough to suggest that she is continuing to back Hamilton despite no longer being in his corner.

Hamilton has had a rough start to the 2024 season as Russell has outperformed him convincingly so far. Even in this weekend’s Monaco GP so far, Russell out-qualified Hamilton as he set the fifth-fastest lap time during qualifying, while the 39-year-old only managed to take only seventh on the grid.

This weekend’s Monaco GP marked the seventh time Russell has managed to out-qualify Hamilton this season. Since Russell has consistently got the better of Hamilton so far, some experts suggested at the start of the season that the latter is perhaps already thinking about his Ferrari move and is not in the right mindset to deliver for Mercedes this year.

However, Hamilton’s recent remarks seem to suggest that it is the Mercedes team that have seemingly sidelined him, knowing that he will move to Maranello next year.

Lewis Hamilton does not expect to out-qualify George Russell in 2024

With 104 pole positions to his name, Lewis Hamilton has undoubtedly been one of F1’s best qualifiers. However, his performances in 2024 have been nothing short of disappointing. And to make things worse for his fans, the 39-year-old does not expect that his qualifying performances will get any better.

Instead, he believes that George Russell will out-qualify him for most of the 2024 campaign. When asked about the same in an interview with Sky Sports, he said, “I don’t anticipate being ahead of George in qualifying this year”.

When pressed to explain why he thought so, Hamilton shrugged with a smile and added, “We’ll see”. Ever since the 39-year-old made such remarks to the press, his fans have begun to worry about the mood in the Mercedes camp.

Fans have now begun to raise concerns about whether the Silver Arrows have begun to sabotage Hamilton, knowing that the Briton will not be a part of their side after the next few months. If that is indeed the case, Hamilton will be hoping for 2025 to come around as soon as possible and move to a side where he feels welcomed.

Charles Leclerc is finally a Monaco GP winner. The boy who grew up watching Formula 1 cars zip past the streets of Monte Carlo took the chequered flag in P1 for the first time in his career. Speaking to the media after the race, the Ferrari driver’s brother, Arthur Leclerc, made an emotional statement about their father.

Overwhelmed by the emotion of his brother’s win, Arthur said (as quoted on X (formerly Twitter)), “I have no voice. I’m so proud of my brother [Charles Leclerc]. It’s the first time I [have] cried for a win. I wish our father (Herve Leclerc) was here with us. This is a dream coming true.”

The Leclerc brothers grew up with a father who was a motorsport fanatic. Herve’s passion for the sport translated into his son making his big break in F1 with the Ferrari driver academy and Sauber. Herve’s dream was to see his son drive for Ferrari in Formula 1 and win on the streets of Monaco.

Unfortunately, Herve passed away in 2017 after battling a prolonged illness. He could not witness his son fulfill this goal. Charles Leclerc finally achieved his family’s target by clinching victory at his home Grand Prix after he finished ahead of both the McLarens and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz.

The emotions were running high in Charles Leclerc’s cockpit as well. As he revealed to Piastri and Sainz in the cool-down room, the last two laps saw him tear up within his crash helmet. Speaking to David Coulthard, he explained that he was talking to his father as he cruised to pick up his first win since the 2022 Austrian GP.

Charles Leclerc has broken the Monaco GP curse

His sixth overall F1 win, on the streets of the Principality, would mean the world to Charles Leclerc. Not only has he fulfilled his father’s dreams, but he has also broken an ominous curse. Before his win, the 26-year-old had failed to even register a podium at the Monaco GP.

Now, his win has also changed the dynamics of the championship battle. Red Bull have lost considerable ground in the Constructors’ Championship after Sergio Perez’s lap one DNF. The #11 driver collided with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen and then collected the other Haas of Nico Hulkenberg to bring out the Red Flag.

With Max Verstappen finishing in P6, and Carlos Sainz rounding off the final podium places, Ferrari now sit only 24 points adrift of Red Bull. Moreover, Charles Leclerc has strengthened his title bid after reducing Max Verstappen’s lead to 31 points.

Lewis Hamilton has been the face of Mercedes for more than a decade now. In 2015, he had an incredible opportunity to drive the whopping $143 million Mercedes 300 SLR. In fact, he did it alongside the man who raced in it back in 1995 late Sir Stirling Moss. The Brit recalled the surreal experience during the unveiling of the concept Mercedes car AMG Mythos Pure Speed ahead of the Monaco GP.

As seen on YouTube, Hamilton said, When you crash, you hope you get thrown out of the car. And it’s just such a different way of thinking today because we have seatbelts. You want to be tucked in and safe.”

“As we were back then, they didn’t want to be stuck in the car when they have a crash. But when we were going on this bank, I remember looking over and it felt very reminiscent of the past time. It gave me a bit of a glimpse into the past of how crazy it was for them. And also just to see a legend like that and riding alongside him. It was a real honor.”

The Pure Speed is reminiscent of the 300 SLR but with an F1-inspired halo. An important addition to the limited edition car as the older version did not rank highly in terms of safety. He admitted the drivers hoped to be thrown out of the car in the event of a crash. The reason is that such open and heavy cars if flipped upside could guarantee fatality.

This is exactly why the halo has become such an important safety invention in the F1 and racing world. However, the 300 SLR is still one of the greatest race cars ever made according to Stirling Moss. Under the hood, the legendary Mercedes car has a naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine which produces as much as 310 hp at 7400 rpm.

Lewis Hamilton points out similarities between Project One and Pure Speed

The concept car which is limited to 250 pieces draws inspiration from the Mercedes Project One. Project One is the Mercedes’s first-ever F1-inspired supercar. Having one in his garage, Hamilton could instantly point out the similarities between the One and Pure Speed during the walk around.

He said, “I love these wheels. This is inspired by the Project One, right? Oh yes. I mean all the projects you guys do are cool.” The seven-time champion also made a hilarious comment about the halo on the Pure Speed.

Hamilton added, “I mean generally the halo looks like a flip-flop that goes between your toes. It doesn’t look good normally. It looks better on here than it does in our car.”

The Pure Speed is modeled closely to an F1 car with no windshield and windows. It’s a completely open two-seater and has a halo for protection. The Pure Speed is the latest in the concept Mercedes Mythos series. Now, the limited edition car has announced itself after the launch ahead of the Monaco GP.

Inside Harry and Meghan’s crumbling Archewell dream as Sussexes blasted over ‘toe-curling’ shows and ‘naive’ ideas

PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell brand was heralded as the start of a new era for the Sussexes – for both their professional and charitable goals.

But the organisation has been beset by difficulties, including a storm this week that saw its charity arm cleared after being reportedly declared delinquent.

The Telegraph reported Archewell had been ordered to stop raising funds after a mix-up showed it as failing to submit records and pay a bill.

It was alleged it had been slapped with a delinquency notice and banned from raising or spending or raising money until it paid the fees.

The Sussexes’ team claimed the documents were filed and the cheque sent but it wasn’t processed on time.

And in a statement on Tuesday night, California’s Department of Justice later confirmed the charity is “current and in good standing”.

Archewell was created with huge fanfare in 2020 as a mix of for-profit and not-for-profit businesses when the couple stepped down from the Royal Family.

Its charitable arm was to focus on fund-raising and supporting projects around the world, while the business side of things concentrated on media productions.

The accounting mix-up has now been resolved, but this isn’t the embarrassing event to hit the Archewell brand since it was formed.

PR expert Mark Borkowski says the couple may have “over-promised” what they could deliver when they launched Archewell – particular given the intense scrutiny they are under as one of the most famous couples in the world.

And he says they need a success soon to limit any damage this latest PR storm has on their brand.

“As an organisation it was possibly over-promising at a time when it was trying to message the world this exciting new horizon of their brand,” Mark explains.

“We have seen all the time that they have used the media, or floated stories through commissaries in the media which have come to haunt them.

“If you are so high-profile, probably some of the most famous people in the world, everything you say gathers attention particularly across socials.

“So messaging hasn’t been right and obviously the complications of setting something up that is so big has been a challenge.”

    Dream dented

Things started off well for the Sussexes and Archewell. In 2021 the charity was gifted donations totalling £10.3m, and they had signed mega-bucks deals with streaming giants Spotify and Netflix.

But last year the charity arm reported a massive hit, with donations dropping by £8.7million compared to the previous year.

Next Archewell faced a staffing crisis with five key executives leaving within the space of 14 months.

The mass exodus saw manager Bennett Levine stepping down, following president Mandana Dayani who quit after just 18 months.

Head of audio Rebecca Sananes left her position in December 2022, while Fara Taylor – who was the head of marketing – and Ben Browning – the head of internal content – stepped down from their roles last year.

Mark believes the couple may have struggled to find people who shared their vision – and help them to deliver the goods.

“People have always said that there was a drive and determination to achieve, and of course your focus can upset people who probably don’t buy into your vision,” he explains.

“I think that has been the heart of the issue again – that their drive means it is probably a difficult match to find people with the same sort of considerations that they have for what they are trying to build.”

    ‘Toe-curlingly cringey’

The main money-makers for the couple’s Archewell Productions were the deals with Spotify and Netflix, rumoured to be worth more than £100million in total.

The Duke and Duchess were lined up to host and produce podcasts for Spotify, with Meghan interviewing several celebrity guests including her tennis ace pal Serena Williams for the Archetypes series.

The much-talked about podcast was described as “toe-curlingly cringey” by one critic, and the Sussexes and Spotify announced last year that they had parted ways by mutual agreement.

Bill Simmons, a senior Spotify exec, later cast doubt on that version of events after he labelled the couple “f***ing grifters. On his self-titled podcast he said: ‘The F***ing Grifters.’ That’s the podcast we shoulda launched with them.

“I gotta get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories.”

The couple’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan was hailed a success, but their two other projects Heart of Invictus and Live to Lead were seen as distinctly underwhelming.

And the couple’s recently rebranded website sussex.com ominously makes no mention of their mega-bucks partnership with the streaming giant.

Despite this, Mark Borkowski says signing Meghan and Harry was a huge coup for both streaming services, generating millions of dollars worth of publicity.

“For all the deals they have done, those channels have got huge amount of publicity from booking them,” he says. “So they have used them and they have used the noise that is generated through having them.

“But we all know that creating content is difficult, it is a challenge. I think there was a sort of naivety in what they thought they could deliver.

“It is always about having a great team. There were lots of comparisons with the Obamas and people like that. But they have clearly had challenges in the teams they have had a round them to deliver the content.”

The couple have faced ridicule in the US, particularly on shows like Family Guy

    Questionable ideas

The couple’s next two films for Netflix are going to be a cooking and gardening show featuring Meghan, while the second programme will take an in-depth look at Harry’s favourite sport Polo.

However, some critics argue Archewell Productions would have to come up with some content with much wider-appeal if their Netflix deal is to continue.

Mark believes the couple are “scrambling around” and need to make their next steps a success to avoid any further tarnishing of their brand.

He says: “Polo might be niche and elitist, but if it gives an insight into a world….

“Who would have thought farming would be such an interesting thing and then you have Jeremy Clarkson?

They keep throwing stuff against the wall and things don’t stick. Everything they do is under intense scrutiny

“I wouldn’t underestimate the topic, but it is whether they have the skillset, the storytelling and the narrative to engage people. It comes back again to what I said – their problem is that expectations are so high and they never manage expectations.

“They don’t have the ability to manage expectations because of how they set their course back when they split and went to California.

“I think they set the bar too high, and clearly there was a belief in that but I think if they came back and looked at these things again I don’t think they would do the same thing over again.

“Unfortunately when you are the most famous couple in the world, there is no sympathy. They are scrambling around and all the time in the backs of their heads they have the idea that they have to succeed.

“They keep throwing stuff against the wall and things don’t stick. Everything they do is under intense scrutiny, which someone launching a similar business would not be under and then perhaps have more chance of making it work.

“The challenge they face is that they need a success. As soon as someone has a success then lots of things are wiped away. They are in desperate need of a success, and if they don’t one there is damage. They need something fast.”

The first lap of the 2024 Monaco GP was nothing short of chaotic. While Kevin Magnussen caused the crash with Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg, thereby ending the trio’s race, the Alpine drivers had a moment of their own. Esteban Ocon lunged on the inside of Pierre Gasly at the Portier, which sent the former’s car in the air. Resultantly, Ocon was dealt severe damage that led to a DNF while his teammate continued after red flags.

Team boss Bruno Famin has taken an exception to the incident and found Ocon fully responsible for the crash. Speaking with Canal+, he said, “It’s exactly what we didn’t want to see. Esteban’s attack was totally out of circumstances. It was exactly what we didn’t want to see and we’re going to draw the consequences. We’re going to make a tough decision.”

Ocon, meanwhile, has taken responsibility for the crash and apologized for it. In a post, he admitted there was no space for him to attack Gasly. He wished for some points for the team as Gasly continued his run after the race resumed. A P10 finish eventually for Gasly fetched him a single point.

Given their shaky past, experts warned Alpine against getting Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly together. The warning proved to be a prophecy as the teammates clashed in their third race together for the French team. The duo put the incident from Australia behind them to score 120 points and put Alpine sixth in the championship last year.

However, the incident in Monaco this year may have brought back some unsavory memories. Alpine is currently going through a terrible run and needs both its drivers to pick points wherever possible. The inability to do so will leave them with no choice but to bring an overhaul to their driver lineup.

The dearth of driver options for Alpine to pick from

Coming from Mercedes and Red Bull driver academies respectively, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly were seen as the next big drivers in F1. However, both are currently driving an Alpine car which severely lacks in performance.

The current state of the French team has led them to look for a place elsewhere, as per reports. If both move out, or Alpine decides to sack them, there aren’t many options for them to field in their cars.

The first name would be their reserve driver Jack Doohan. Bruno Famin rates him highly and the 21-year-old also sees his future with the team. Meanwhile, the only other option available for Alpine would be Mick Schumacher.

That is if Mercedes decides not to give him the seat that Lewis Hamilton will leave vacant in 2025. Schumacher is currently racing for Alpine’s WEC team. If he impresses in the series, he might just make a comeback in F1.

Max Verstappen has recently received a customized $138,000 Tag Heuer Monaco split-second watch. The Swiss brand gifted the Dutchman this watch to celebrate his accomplishments in motorsports. Prior to Verstappen, Tag Heuer have made custom-made watches for several F1 legends previously. They include the likes of Manuel Fangio and Ayrton Senna.

The watch Verstappen received is absolutely stunning as it contains several elements, all of which summarize his achievements since he got into F1. For example, Verstappen’s timepiece has the words – “World Champion – Max Verstappen” – engraved on the case back.

Additionally, his iconic lion head logo and his name are mentioned at 3’o clock. Meanwhile, at 1’0 clock, Verstappen’s car number, 1, is mentioned in bold red.

Last but not least, his three world championship victories are mentioned at 9’0 clock. Since Red Bull has been associated with Tag Heuer since the 2016 season, Verstappen can hope to have many more such partnerships with the Swiss brand if he continues to perform at a high level.

However, it is pertinent to note that Verstappen is not the only driver who has a custom-made watch. The likes of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also have custom-made watches for them.

F1 drivers often flaunt watches of their team’s official timekeepers

Charles Leclerc, for example, has had a collaboration with Richard Mille for the longest of times. The Swiss watch brand made the RM UP-01 Ferrari for Leclerc, their thinnest timepiece. The size of this watch is just 1.75mm.

Only 150 of these watches have been made and they cost $2 million each. Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz, also owns the same watch.

Among the other drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have had a partnership with IWC. According to Robb Report, Hamilton worked closely with IWC to make the IWC Portugieser Tourbillon.

This custom-made watch of his has his name and his car number 44. Since this watch was made in close collaboration with Hamilton, IWC decided to produce only 44. This watch costs $175,000.
