Lewis Hamilton reveals the time he ‘thought it was all over’ in huge incident

Lewis Hamilton speaking in the press conference.

Lewis Hamilton is leaving Mercedes for Ferrari at the end of the year.

Despite being a Formula 1 driver who races at 350 km/h, it was a surfing accident and not a racing crash that had Lewis Hamilton thinking “it’s all over”.

Lewis Hamilton has recorded several big crashes during his time in Formula 1, most notably at the 2007 European Grand Prix, 2012 Belgian Grand Prix and more recently at the 2021 Italian race.

Lewis Hamilton: That for me was like: ‘it’s over, it’s all over’

Contesting his debut season back in 2007, Hamilton was airlifted to hospital for precautionary checks when he crashed into the barrier at 280 km/h during qualifying after his right front tyre burst, leaving him as a mere passenger.

A few years later he was one of the drivers caught up in Romain Grosjean’s crash at the start of the Belgian Grand Prix, Hamilton was sent nose-first into rival drivers, pitching the nose of his McLaren into the air before coming down hard.

The more recent of his three big crashes was in Italy in 2021 as he battled Max Verstappen for the World title, the two were involved in a crash that had the Red Bull driver’s RB16B landing on Hamilton’s Halo.

And yet it was a surfing accident that had the seven-time World Champion thinking this is how it ends.

Catching waves with surfing legend Kelly Slater at the Pipeline, which is billed as the ‘one of the most complicated breaks in the world with multiple take off points all breaking over a razor-sharp reef’ by American Surf Magazine, Slater warned Hamilton he was heading towards trouble.

The Briton, though, still paddled towards the waves only for things to go horribly wrong.

“The biggest wipeout I had I was with Kelly Slater, on Pipeline,” he revealed on the Hot Ones.

“It was like 20ft waves and Kelly was like ‘there’s no way you’re coming out there. You’re crazy.’

“As I started to try to paddle in I got sucked into the ‘kill zone’ basically.

“So I got sucked in, and I turn around and see this set of four waves coming and that for me was like: ‘it’s over, it’s all over’.

“As I threw my board, I dove down and grabbed the reef and I could hear this wave crash behind me. My board got ripped off and snapped in half.

“I came back up, obviously gasping for air and the next one was coming so back down, grabbed the reef again as another wave comes over. So I did that three times.

“I got up, I’d nearly run out of air. I’d nearly drowned but managed to swim back from there.

“But after that I was ‘Okay, massive props to these surfers’.”

The seven-time World Champion remains an avid surfer having had his first surf lessons at the Wadi Adventure wave pool in Abu Dhabi in 2014.

He took to social media back then to say: “These waves are amazing, but the best thing is no sharks! No chance of getting my ass bit!”

Get well, Kate! Palace is flooded with ‘tens of thousands’ of get-well-soon cards and gifts for the Princess of Wales as she continues cancer battle

Buckingham Palace has been inundated with ‘tens of thousands’ of get well soon cards and gifts for the Princess of Wales, following her brave admission that she is undergoing cancer treatment.

It is understood that the correspondence team at the palace have been ‘so touched’ by the love and affection shown to Kate, 42, who recorded an emotional video message revealing she had embarked on a course of preventative chemotherapy.

The princess has withdrawn from public life to concentrate on her treatment and recovery, as well as protecting her young family.

But the outpouring of support for the princess continues- and palace staff have received thousands and thousands of cards, letters and gifts from members of the public offering their support and good-wishes.

The sheer volume of correspondence has at times been difficult for the team to cope with. But staff do aim to reply to all the writers, eventually.

In the brave and moving video message that she recorded for the nation back in March, the princess pleaded for 'some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment'

In a normal week the Palace can expect up to 1,000 letters, but what they have experienced since March has significantly surpassed that

Although the Prince and Princess of Wales have their own private office at Kensington Palace, all letters to members of the Royal Family are dealt with by the Court Post Office.

In a normal week the palace would expect to receive up to 1,000 letters each week from members of the public with various queries or messages of good wishes for individual royals.

But what they have experienced since the disclosure of the princess’s health issues has significantly superseded that.

Kate was unexpectedly taken into hospital at the start of the year for major abdominal surgery. She remained in The London Clinic for two weeks before going home to recuperate.

In March, following a period of intense global speculation about her health, the princess herself confirmed that while her condition had not been thought to be cancerous at the time, doctors had subsequently discovered evidence of the disease.

She made clear that she needed to focus on both her recovery but also supporting her young children at a difficult time, asking for her family to be given time and space while she completed her treatment.

Although there has been no official update on her health since, The Mail understands that the princess has been seen out and about more with her family in recent weeks, which will be taken as a positive sign by many.

However earlier this week Kensington Palace stressed that she very much still needs time and space to recover.

Speaking at the launch of a landmark report by her early years ‘business taskforce’, a Kensington Palace spokesman stressed that the news should not be viewed as her returning to work.

A senior royal aide added: ‘The Princess of Wales was the driving force behind the business task force. She has been kept up to date since the inception of the task force and she has read the report and been briefed on it.

‘This is a clear commitment she has made that throughout her life of public service that this will be focus. That will continue when she returns to work.

‘But we have been really clear that she needs the space and the privacy to recover right now. She will return to work when she has had the green light from doctors.’

Kate’s cancer battle in her own words: The Princess of Wales’ emotional video statement in full

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery.

It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to

George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.

As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.

Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.

We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.

Max Verstappen invites entire F1 2024 grid to drive Red Bull RB20 ‘faster than me’

An unflattering image of Max Verstappen caught mid-speech in Monaco

Max Verstappen endured his most difficult weekend for some time in Monaco

Max Verstappen has defended his performance at the Monaco Grand Prix, claiming nobody in the paddock would have been able to drive the Red Bull RB20 “faster than me” last weekend.

Verstappen has established himself as the dominant force of modern F1, winning 49 of the last 74 races to claim three consecutive World Championships.

Max Verstappen challenges whole F1 2024 field to drive Red Bull RB20

A fourth title had looked inevitable after Verstappen started the F1 2024 season by winning four of the first five races – including three one-two finishes for Red Bull – to establish a clear lead in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings.

However, with McLaren and Ferrari improving quickly Red Bull have looked increasingly vulnerable over recent weeks with Verstappen winning one of the last three rounds as Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc triumphed in Miami and Monaco respectively.

Verstappen could only manage sixth on the grid in Monaco as team-mate Sergio Perez failed to reach Q3 for the second race in succession.

Verstappen’s lead over Monaco winner Charles Lelcerc in the World Championship has been cut to 31 points, with Red Bull now just 24 ahead of Ferrari.

Speaking to media including PlanetF1.com after qualifying, Verstappen admitted Red Bull got “found out” in Monaco for not addressing a weakness of the car which had been present since the first year of F1’s ground effect rules in 2022.

The Dutchman went to liken the RB20 to a go-kart around the principality, claiming the car was “jumping around a lot” and “not absorbing any kerb strikes or bumps or camber changes.”

And Verstappen believes no other driver would have salvaged a sixth-place finish in Monaco with the car so recalcitrant.

Asked if he made his first mistakes of F1 2024 in Monaco, he replied: “I would say no. And I would be happy to invite anyone in the paddock to drive this car faster than me.”

Red Bull’s performance last weekend prompted Verstappen’s father Jos to declare that the team’s dominance of F1 is now over, with Verstappen Sr urging the Milton Keynes-based outfit to respond in the face of a renewed threat from Ferrari and McLaren.

He told Dutch publication De Telegraaf: “For sure there will be other tracks where Red Bull will do well again, but I am very curious [to see] how they will solve these problems.

“They will have to do something about it, understand where certain difficulties come from. Meanwhile, it is clear that McLaren and Ferrari are getting closer and closer.

“Max has been good at hiding some of the problems, but you can see how big the difference is between him and his team-mate.

“It seems to me that Red Bull’s period of dominance has come to an end.”

Red Bull director Helmut Marko has revealed a retired Formula One world champion is keen to RETURN to the sport with Red Bull and is gunning for Sergio Perez’s spot

Red Bull director Helmut Marko has revealed that a former Formula One star has expressed interest in returning to the sport and replacing number two driver Sergio Perez.

The reigning world champions’ current driver line-up is led by three-time world champion, Max Verstappen, with the experienced Perez alongside him.

Red Bull currently lead the constructors championship by 24 points from second-placed Ferrari, with Verstappen on top of the driver standings, and the Mexican driver in fifth.

It is expected that Perez will be offered a new contract by Red Bull, according to the Mirror, and they are confident he is the right man to continue partnering their star man, Verstappen.

However, despite this, Marko has shared that four-time world champion, Sebastian Vettel, wants to comeback to the team he won all his titles with.

Speaking to German media outlet, Formel1.de, Red Bull’s advisor said: ‘[Vettel] has repeatedly enquired with us, but I don’t think it would be pleasant for him to drive next to Max Verstappen.’

While Marko does not see a return to Red Bull as the right thing for Vettel, he does see a return for to racing in his future.

Marko won Le Mans with Porsche in 1971, and believes that the endurance-based racing format could be the best direction for him to go in, even insinuating he is already on the path to it.

Red Bull’s advisor claimed: ‘If I’m correctly informed, he seems to be moving towards Porsche and long-distance racing. I think that would be a very nice step for him.’

The 36-year-old retired back in 2022 at Aston Martin after completing nearly 300 grand prix’s over a 15-year period in F1.

Vettel raced for BMW Sauber, Toro Rosso, and Ferrari, in addition to his two-year spell at Aston Martin and five years at Red Bull.

The German is the youngest world champion ever in the sport, winning his first title, while at Red Bull, in 2010, at just 23 years of age.

Three more followed in three years, he had reigned supreme in four consecutive seasons by the time he was 26.

Lewis Hamilton may drive one of the fastest cars in the world for a living, but his terrifying, near-death experience didn’t occur on a race track.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion revealed the scary incident happened in Hawaii while surfing the infamous Pipeline with Kelly Slater.

‘It was 20-foot waves and Kelly was like “there’s no way you’re coming out there,”‘ Hamilton said during an interview on Hot Ones, which dropped Thursday.

‘As I started to try to paddle in, I got sucked into the kill zone,’ he went on.

‘My board got ripped off and snapped in half. I came back up gasping for air but the next one was coming so I went back down.’

Lewis Hamilton reveals he HAS urinated in his Formula One car during a race – after famously telling Ellen DeGeneres he ‘can’t do it’

Lewis Hamilton has admitted he has urinated in his Formula One car after previously admitting to Ellen DeGeneres he ‘can’t do it’.

F1 drivers, famously, have to relieve themselves during races because they consume huge amounts of liquid before getting into their cars.

A full bladder can be uncomfortable, as well as dangerous, because of the huge G-forces experienced by drivers as they navigate their way around circuits.

Hamilton also once revealed his mechanics told him legendary F1 driver Michael Schumacher ‘peed every single time he was in the car’.

But he also admitted at the time that he had never done it and thought he would never be able to go behind the wheel.

However, during his appearance on Hot Wings that was released on Thursday, Hamilton admitted he wet himself in Singapore ‘two or three years ago’.

Singapore is widely-regarded as the most physically demanding race on the F1 calendar because of its brutal humidity and tropical climate.

Therefore drivers stock up on liquids to keep themselves hydrated throughout and it is no wonder Hamilton had to relieve himself.

Asked about how a driver’s weight can affect performance, Hamilton said: ‘Basically 10 kilograms is usually worth 0.25 or 0.3 of a second. So if you put 10 kilos or 22 pounds of fuel in the car you’ll just go slower.

‘There was one race where I was a kilo over so over a whole race distance it’s like 1.8 seconds (slower) or something like that.

‘We do have a drinks tube in the car but I never drink in the car. I just forget most of the time. So I usually have that weight taken out – it’s usually only like 500 milliliters.

‘Quite a lot of drivers, as far as I’m aware, pee in the car. I’ve drunk a lot before. Just before I get in the car I go as many times as possible right up until the last minute but I just can’t bring myself to pee myself.

‘I have once. It was Singapore, oh god, and it was like two or three years ago. The safety car came out and I was behind it and I was like ‘I’m dying’. Honestly, when your bladder is full with the g-force you’re pulling it’s really, really uncomfortable.

‘You just can’t focus on your job so I remember trying to go and I really had to force it. It’s really hard. But luckily I haven’t had to do it – only once.’

During an appearance on Ellen in 2016, Hamilton said then he had never relieved himself in his car.

He said: ‘You’re supposed to go in your suit, but I can’t do it. I’ve never done it. But there are drivers that do.

‘The driver that used to drive for the team, was Michael Schumacher, I don’t know if anyone’s heard of him, but legend racing driver, but my mechanics told me he peed every single time he was in the car.’

Australian driver Daniel Riccardo, currently at RB, was also asked about it by Ellen.

He said: ‘I’ve never done it. If you have to go, you just painfully hold on until the end, but every bump, every little kerb you hit hurts.’

Riccardo added before the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix: ‘If you need to go, it just stings.

‘I’ve heard some have gone [during a race], before. One has not. I couldn’t. You know, you’re so tense, it’s just hard to go.

‘That’s why all of us, when we get to the grid, we jump out. We’re not going to like, I don’t know, check out Facebook or Instagram or something, we’re going to use the bathroom and try to be not in that predicament come the race.’

    Running

In perhaps one of the royal couple’s more iconic moments, Kate raced William and Harry during a training day for their Heads Together team for the London Marathon at the Olympic Park on February 5, 2017.

Showing her competitive streak, the princess sprinted down the track in a red quilted jacket, black jeans and trainers.

At the start of the race it looked as though Kate might be taking the lead and had a shot at winning.

However, despite her best efforts, the princess was toon overtaken by her husband and brother-in-law.

    Cricket

Swinging like a natural, Kate enjoyed a game of cricket with India’s former captain Sachin Tendulkar during a visit to Mumbai’s iconic Oval Maidan recreation ground in April 2016.

She confidently batted the balls and fielded in front of Indian children, prompting Tendulkar to call her ‘very, very sporty’.

The athletic princess also did other sporty drills with William – all while wearing a stunning dress by Mumbai designer Anita Dongre.

During the royal tour, the event was arranged for them to meet representatives and children from three charities – school transport organisation Magic Bus, the Door Step School and India’s Childline.

    Hockey

A year after marrying William, Kate got stuck in with a game of hockey at her old prep school, St Andrew’s in Berkshire, in November 2012.

She opened the new Astroturf pitch during the visit and grabbed a hockey stick to join in with the fun.

Perhaps not best dressed for a competitive sports game, the princess was wearing a tweed coat and high heeled boots but did not let her outfit choice stop her.

F1 star Lewis Hamilton tears up while struggling through ultra-spicy wings on Hot Ones… after admitting he CANCELED his appearance multiple times out of fear

Lewis Hamilton proved he’s a true competitor when he went ‘full send’ during an interview on the popular internet show, Hot Ones.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion winced as he began sweating and tearing up while downing a series of ultra-spicy wings throughout the video.

Hamilton revealed he had previously cancelled on the Hot Ones team ‘several times’ because he was nervous about the infamous spice challenge.

‘A part of it was scheduling [conflicts] but most of it was like, “I don’t know if I can do it,” he admitted.

‘Even on the way here I was honestly like, “how can I get out of this?”‘

By the fifth wing, Hamilton was starting to struggle.

‘Holy s**t, it’s hard to talk,’ he said.

The following wing, coated in the notoriously spicy ‘Da Bomb Beyond Insanity’ sauce, caused the athlete the most distress.

However, at the end of the interview, he insisted on going back in for another dab of the condiment.

‘It hurts when I breathe … Do we go in again? We should just send it,’ he said.

Fans were quick to praise the Mercedes ace for his ‘legendary’ behavior.

‘Can we please talk about how Lewis finished all the sauces and then WENT BACK FOR MORE?!! This man is INSANE,’ one person commented on the YouTube video.

‘Lewis just making sure that no other F1 driver will ever top his performance by doing da bomb again,’ another joked.

A third person chimed in, ‘bro what, ive been watching hot ones since day one NO one came back for an extra bite of da bomb with a dab of the sauce… this is why he is legendary.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Hamilton recalled a terrifying, near-death experience while surfing with WSL champ Kelly Slater.

‘It was 20-foot waves and Kelly was like “there’s no way you’re coming out there,”‘ he said.

‘As I started to try to paddle in, I got sucked into the kill zone. I turn around and see this set of four waves coming. [I thought] “it’s over, it’s all over.”‘

The Ferrari-bound F1 driver then jumped off his board and dove underwater to hold onto the reef.

‘I could hear this wave crash above me,’ he recalled.

‘My board got ripped off and snapped in half. I came back up gasping for air but the next one was coming so I went back down … I nearly ran out of air, I nearly drowned.’

Meghan Markle has been dubbed the “Princess of Nigeria” by fans as the Sussexes visit the African country.

It’s been called the Sussexes’ “unofficial Royal tour” and it looks as though they’ve found new fans who have given Meghan the new nickname.

The pair have been busy since touching down on in Abuja on Friday for the 72-hour whistle stop tour of the country.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were both spotted watching a sitting volleyball game yesterday, Saturday, May 11, before Harry decided to join in the match at Nigeria Unconquered, a charity supporting wounded, injured or sick servicemembers, in Abuja.

Now fans have taken to social media site X to express their admiration for Meghan.

Another said: “Nigerian princess and her husband.”

The Sussexes were invited to Nigeria by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who met Harry last September at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Their invite came after Meghan found out about her Nigerian heritage – with Meghan thanking Nigerians for welcoming her back to “my country” as she discussed her West African roots on day two of her visit with Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex spoke at a panel event alongside Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organization, last night, Saturday, May 11.

She told those in attendance: “I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country…my country,” reports PEOPLE magazine.

The Nigerian jaunt comes after the Duke visited London alone for an Invictus Games ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral.

However he did not see his father King Charles despite him being just a few miles away at a Buckingham Palace garden party.

The Sussexes reunited in a surprise – albeit it very brief – visit to the UK by Meghan before they jetted off to Africa via Heathrow Airport.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have now become a “joke in the United States”, a royal commentator claimed.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told GB News that Meghan and Harry need to work on their image as they have “become a joke”.

“I think in general, yes, the objective of this trip is to appear like they are still on the level of the real working royals,” she explained.

“They’ve become a joke in the States specifically, but also in the UK, and they need to improve their image for the Sussex brand as a whole.”

Before visiting Nigeria, Prince Harry made a brief stop in the UK to attend an event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.
