Anthony Joshua Expresses Worries for Mike Tyson Ahead of Jake Paul Boxing Match

This summer, Tyson is scheduled to battle YouTuber Paul in Texas, and Joshua is worried about the icon competing at nearly sixty years old.

Anthony Joshua will hope that Mike Tyson emerges unscathed from his bout with Jake Paul.

At the age of 58, Tyson will return from retirement to challenge social media sensation Paul in Texas this summer. Although the contest’s regulations have not been made public, Tyson has stated that it would be a “real fight” even though he has also acknowledged that it will be conducted more like an exhibition than a professional fight.

Since his exhibition match against fellow great Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, which ended in a tie, Tyson has not competed. In 2005, Tyson retired on his stool following his fifth-round knockout loss to Kevin McBride in their last professional bout. Before making his ring comeback, questions regarding his age have been raised. This weekend, Joshua will address these concerns on The Jonathan Ross Show, saying, “He’s [Mike Tyson] older now.” I hope he emerges unscathed. Jake Paul’s youth is the only reason, in my opinion.”

Tyson Fury, Joshua’s opponent, maintains that these “novelty” fights are beneficial to boxing, and “AJ” concurs, saying, “I personally think it’s really good.” The reason the diehard boxing fans dislike it, in my opinion, is that they feel that person is demeaning our sport by bringing so many people into boxing, which is good for everyone else. Everyone who watches is helpful.”

In 2020, Paul won his first professional boxing match in Miami, defeating fellow social media celebrity AnEsonGib. He moved on to battle competitors from other sports, namely mixed martial arts, and forged a prosperous career doing so. However, he was defeated by Tommy Fury, the first professional boxer he faced, in the previous year.

Six months later, Paul defeated UFC icon Nate Diaz. He then focused on moving up the global rankings by taking on reputable professional boxers. After suffering two first-round knockouts, Paul has decided to face Tyson in a battle that Netflix will webcast, returning his focus to “novelty” bouts.

In addition, Paul has stated that he wants to challenge Canelo Alvarez, the top contender in the pound-for-pound division, in order to win a world championship. The American has also been associated with battles against UFC icon Conor McGregor, who recently said he would consider facing Paul, and social media adversary KSI.

  • Mike Tyson made a splash in the boxing world by garnering ‘Billions of Views’ simply by discussing Fighting

Mike Tyson made a splash in the boxing world by garnering ‘Billions of Views’ simply by discussing Fighting

Mike Tyson has hit out at critics of his comeback fight against Jake Paul by claiming they are just ‘jealous’ of his popularity.

Tyson announced last month that he will return to the ring to take on the ex-YouTuber, 27, at the 80,000-seater AT&T Stadium in Texas on July 20, with the fight to be shown live on Netflix.

The former two-time heavyweight champion will be 58 by the time he enters the ring, and promoter Eddie Hearn has claimed it is ‘really sad’ that he is returning, while Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez stated he has no interest in the fight.

Tyson retired from the sport in 2005, and has had just one exhibition bout against against fellow legend Roy Jones Jr since, but he does not appear concerned by his time away from the ring, and insists that billions of people will still tune on to see him face Paul.

‘I’m 58, and what? I’m getting billions of views from just talking about fighting,’ he told Reuters.

Mike Tyson will take on Jake Paul at an 80,000-seater stadium in Texas in July

The fight has received criticism due to Tyson’s age, but the former heavyweight champion believes people are just ‘jealous’ of his popularity

‘Everybody, even most of the athletes, they’re jealous… You couldn’t sell out an arena. Who at 58 can sell out an 80,000-seat arena? Why do you think he wants to fight me and not anybody else?

‘All the boxers want to fight him. But if he fought them, the only people that will come are the people that like him. Their parents might not even come watch them.’

Since calling time on his professional career almost two decades ago, Tyson has battled with physical issues and was wheelchair-bound at one stage due to sciatica.

But he helped train Francis Ngannou for his fight against Tyson Fury last year, with the former UFC champion almost pulling off a massive upset, and has got himself back into good condition in recent months.

‘Iron Mike’ has shared footage of his workouts on social media, having already started his training camp despite his fight with Paul being over three months away.

He sent out a warning to Paul last month, asking him ‘you still wanna f*** with me’ after posting one of his power workouts, as he looks to rediscover the explosiveness that made him a major force in boxing’s blue-riband division when he was at the peak of his powers.

But it will be a tall ask for Tyson, as Paul has been active since making his debut four years ago, racking up a record of nine wins and just one loss.

He tasted defeat for the first time last year against bitter rival Tommy Fury, but has since won three on the bounce, and is likely to head into the fight as the favourite due to being 30 years younger than Tyson.

Sean Ono Lennon took to social media to share his “long-awaited” remarks about Prince Harry’s bombshell 2023 memoir, Spare.

The book, which quickly became a bestseller, shared a raw insight into his upbringing in the Royal Family and the hardships he endured growing up in the spotlight.

Although the record-breaking book received mixed reviews, Sean revealed he was unimpressed as she shared his thoughts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono told his 365,500 followers: “My long-awaited review of Prince Harry’s autobiography is two words. ‘Spare Me.’”

However, after an onslaught of backlash the 48-year-old quickly doubled down on his comments with different posts.

Sean wrote: “I do empathize with him generally. But the way he whines and wangs on about things is really too much.

“I’m just having a little fun. I think he’s earned some mockery. (I’m sure I have as well).”

The songwriter also noted that while he is “aware” of what he and Prince Harry have in common, he considers the Royal an “idiot” and a “buffoon.”

“I do [empathize with him]. … [That’s] why I’m very disappointed with his outlook. I was hoping he’d be smarter.”

He then responded to a Sussex fan who claimed that he “based his whole life on his father’s success,” and another who suggested he was jealous of Harry’s success.

Sean hit back: “I mean, I don’t care but I did win an Oscar this year so…I think I’m doing okay.

In March, he won the highly coveted trophy for Best Animated Short Film, which was awarded for “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko.”

  • Ronda Rousey earned more than Conor McGregor in her prime, terrified Mike Tyson and paved the way for Amanda Nunes, Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the UFC

Ronda Rousey earned more than Conor McGregor in her prime, terrified Mike Tyson and paved the way for Amanda Nunes, Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the UFC

As Dana White stepped into his all-black SUV in January 2011, he was stopped by a question about whether or not women would ever fight in the UFC.

Without missing a beat, the American swiftly replied ‘never’.

9Ronda Rousey celebrates her win over Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 – a ground-breaking moment in MMACredit: Getty Images – Getty

Almost two years later, White altered the landscape of MMA forever when he confirmed Ronda Rousey was the first female fighter to sign with the UFC.

In addition, the former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion became the first ever 135lbs champion in the UFC and defended her newly acquired title against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157.

Rousey was accustomed to dealing with pressure already in her burgeoning career; she won Bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games in Judo, had dislocated bitter rival Meisha Tate’s elbow during their grudge match and even earned the nickname ‘Rowdy’ after WWE legend Roddy Piper agreed she could adopt his moniker.

However, it is entirely possible there would not have been another female fighter in the UFC for some time if she lost to Carmouche in California on February 23, 2013.

Rousey did win – in spectacular fashion inside of a round – to spark a run of six consecutive UFC title defences in the bantamweight division.

In December of the very same year, the UFC introduced a strawweight division as the clamour for more female fights grew alongside Rousey’s popularity.

It took the Olympian 14 seconds to submit Cat Zingano to gain the fastest ever submission win in UFC history, as her ability in the octagon transcended MMA.

Mike Tyson admitted he wanted no part of Rousey when asked about the growth of MMA and what it meant for boxing.

“S***, Ronda Rousey might kick my ass,” he said in an interview with HuffPost Live. “That 14 seconds the last fight, s***, man you got to take that seriously.

“She’s marketed herself, and not necessarily from a publicist’s perspective. She put in the work, too. She’s putting these people to bed, she’s tapping them out, and she’s doing the 14-second thing.”

It wasn’t just inside the octagon where Rousey was making a name for herself; she was also a commercial superstar. In 2015, she appeared on the front cover of the popular EA Sports UFC 2 video game alongside Conor McGregor.

Both Rousey and the Irishman fought three times in 2015, yet Rousey was officially the highest-earning UFC athlete.

Rousey would amass a 12-2 record from her professional MMA career, calling quits in 2016 after her loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207. However, her impact on the UFC and women’s sport as a whole is significant.

Since 2013, there has been a 15 per cent increase in women’s appearances in the UFC. Twenty one women fought in that year, while there were 104 appearances by female fighters in 2020.

182 women in total have fought since UFC 157 when Rousey defeated Liz Carmouche, while there have been 31 events headlined by women. One in ten main events have been headlined by women since 2013.

Nunes has since replaced Rousey as the pound-for-pound best female fighter on the planet, achieving iconic ‘double champ’ status by claiming both the bantamweight and featherweight titles.

‘The Lioness’ became the first fighter ever (male or female) to record multiple title defences in two divisions whilst holding two titles with her first-round submission of Megan Anderson at UFC 259.

By extending her win streak to 12 in the UFC, the Brazilian holds the longest winning streak in UFC Women’s history, while only Kamaru Usman (13) holds a longer, active winning streak.

“The next challenge is to beat the record for the most title defences,” she said. “I want to do it better than the guys.

“I think about that. I want to do what they think a woman can’t do. I want to keep fighting, keep defending this title until I break that record.”

9The Lioness became the first female to hold two belts simultaneously in UFC history back in 2018Credit: Getty Images – Getty

Breaking down barriers and redefining what women can and cannot do is something the UFC have actively sought to do ever since UFC 157.

Perhaps no fight typified this better than the strawweight title fight between Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 almost a year ago to the very day.

When you consider what makes a fight truly great, there is often an element of imperfection which gives way to such chaos. Would Nate Diaz have come back against McGregor if the Irishman did not gas out or would Robbie Lawler have been able to withstand such punishment from Rory MacDonald without throwing such desperate shots?

But Zhang and Jedrzejczyk were practically perfect from the very first bell, their excellence rather deficiency brought the best out of one another. than The champion’s power and accuracy left the challenger so grossly deformed she earned comparisons with an ‘alien’, while Zhang whiffed on shots later on because of the damaging leg kicks Jedrzejczyk threw.

Dana White’s comments in 2011 about women never fighting in the UFC seems a lot longer than a decade ago and his inability to contain his delight after the conclusion of the strawweight title fight is a reminder of how far the company has come.

“It’s one of the best fights I’ve ever seen, period,” he said. “Right when the fight got over, I heard that they threw 800 punches, 400 each, in that ballpark.

“Both women were incredibly durable, kept coming forward, both of them wanted to win that belt so bad. It was one of the greatest fights ever,” White said.

“From what I saw, those guys were matching each other punch for punch. Every time someone would punch or kick, the other one would punch or kick.

“Both of them threw around 400 punches. It was an incredible fight.”

981 women’s bouts took place in 2020. This has grown 15% from the 16 bouts that took place in 2013.

The importance of Ronda Rousey, the first woman to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, to the growth of female fighters can never be underestimated.

Princess Kate’s hair incident on royal outing prompted concerned security guard to step in

Princess Kate seemed unfazed when a keen fan got a little too close for comfort, although security was ready to respond.

Princess Kate’s luscious brunette locks are the envy of royal fans around the world, and are one of the features most associated with her.

However, her hair almost led to a serious incident last year when she and Prince William went on a walkabout in Windsor and an overenthusiastic fan from America wanted to pose for a selfie with Kate.

The Princess happily went in for the picture but the woman got a little too excited and ended up grabbing a handful of Kate’s hair, but in a flash, a security guard was on hand.

Another soon approached to assess the situation, but Kate seemed unbothered and carried on meeting and greeting members of the public.

After the photo she graciously said to the fan “nice to meet you”, and the woman quickly apologised to the security guard as the incident blew over.

During the same walkabout another particularly heartwarming moment occurred when a crying little girl was comforted by Kate, The Mirror reported.

The girl’s day no doubt improved when the Princess gave her a long hug and crouched down to chat with her for a while, making sure she felt better.

Kate has been away from royal engagements since the start of the year as she is currently undergoing preventative chemotherapy, having announced her cancer diagnosis in March.

She will be unable to attend rehearsals for Trooping the Colour, on June 8, and is not likely to attend the actual event alongside the other royals on June 15.

As Colonel of the Irish Guards, tradition would see her take the salute at the Colonel’s Review, the name of the rehearsal held prior to the event itself.

Lieutenant General James Bucknall, KCB, CBE is set to step in for the Princess and shared a sweet message for her when news broke that she would be missing out.

The Let Gen said in sympathy: “We totally understand and our thoughts and best wishes are with Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales.”

He also told The Sun: “We are even more determined to make the Colonel’s Review the best yet for her. We are so proud to have The Princess of Wales as the Colonel of the Irish Guards.”

King Charles’s official birthday parade will be held on June 15 and is one of the biggest military ceremonies of the year featuring around 1,600 parading soldiers, 400 musicians, 200 horses, finishing with an RAF flypast over Buckingham Palace.

  • Jake Paul offers two UFC legends $10million as he continues search for MMA opponent ahead of Mike Tyson fight

Jake Paul offers two UFC legends $10million as he continues search for MMA opponent ahead of Mike Tyson fight

Jake Paul is already looking past his fight with Mike Tyson.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer recently sent shockwaves through the combat sports world by announcing he will face Tyson at AT&T Stadium in Texas on July 20.

Paul and Tyson will fight live on Netflix this summer

Although he’s got one of boxing’s best-ever heavyweights in front of him, Paul is publicly trying to secure an opponent for his MMA debut, which could take place later this year.

The 27-year-old signed a deal to fight under MMA rules for PFL in 2023 but he has since been fixated on continuing his 9-1 career in the squared circle.

Paul offered Nate Diaz an eight-figure payday to rematch him in MMA after outpointing the UFC legend when they boxed last August.

Now, he’s put the same deal on the table for Jorge Masvival, who will make his boxing debut opposite Diaz in a 10-round, 175lb fight in California on June 1.

“I am being so serious when I say that I want to fight them in MMA,” Paul said on his “BS w Jake Paul” podcast.

“Either Masvidal or Diaz, in the PFL, $10million offer for either one of those guys.

“Again, they will literally hide behind the fact… Masvidal: ‘You can’t even box. What the f*** are you going to do coming over to MMA, bro? I’m f***ing from Miami, Florida, bro! F*** you, don’t disrespect me.’

“F***ing bird brain, that’s what he hides behind. Same with Paddy [Pimblett], Sean Strickland, all of these guys hide behind these crazy things.

Diaz is open to a rematch but not in the PFLCredit: Esther Lin/Most Valuable Promotions

“Still, none of them have shown up to the table to talk any business about anything to make anything actually happen for a real fight, a real spar, whatever it is.

“So, the offer still stands there. I want either one of those guys in MMA.”

Diaz says he never turned down the offer but admits he has no interest in fighting in the PFL as he hopes to return to the UFC for a trilogy bout with Conor McGregor.

He said: “I didn’t turn it down. He [Paul] didn’t take my offer. No PFL. PFL, they’re selling two tickets and get two free. That’s what Dana [White] said.”

Masvidal still has a deal with Dana White’s MMA leagueCredit: Getty

Masvidal, who is still under contract with the UFC, has also distanced himself from an MMA fight with Paul but did say they could settle their differences another way.

“Jake runs up on me somewhere else where it’s not a ring or something you can find out bro,” he said on The MMA Hour.

“You’re talking about the PFL, the f*** are you going to do in MMA? Are you kidding me? You can’t even box.

“Now you’re going to fight in MMA? I would kick your f***ing kneecap off your fragile body.

“You dumb motherf***er, don’t bring up MMA ever you disrespectful piece of s***.”

  • Call Mike Tyson’s fight at 58 a fraud a disgrace or a downright shame… but Jake Paul is the one at greatest risk of serious harm despite being 30 years younger

Call Mike Tyson’s fight at 58 a fraud a disgrace or a downright shame… but Jake Paul is the one at greatest risk of serious harm despite being 30 years younger

For just a moment I thought I had better check whether Mike Tyson is older than me. After all, we do seem to have spent half a lifetime across the ropes from each other.

Of course, I do have about a quarter of a century over him but still the age difference is less than the 30 years between Iron Mike and Jake Paul. So when it was announced that these two are to fight each for real for other this summer the gut reaction was a sharp intake of breath.

What is this? Father against son for a family fortune? Well, for the money, yes.

The gaping-mouthed reaction around the world varies between fears for Tyson’s life and ridicule for boxing making a mockery of itself yet again. An obscenity even.

It is understandable that health and welfare would be concerned for a man of bus pass age in America. But the more you think about it, maybe, the anxiety should be focussed on the other side of the ring.

Jake Paul will fight boxing legend Mike Tyson at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas later this year

57-year-old Tyson is stepping back into the ring to fight Paul in an unusual matchup

Former unified heavyweight world champion, Tyson, possesses potentially the most decapitating punch in ring history

Tyson is not one of the nobodies who Paul has been mowing down for fun on and lolly since crossing over from YouTube scuffling to a semblance to boxing proper.

Even if I were 50 years younger I would not want to be on the receiving end of potentially the most decapitating punch in ring history.

Call it a farce, call it a fraud a disgrace or a downright shame – all of which are an argument – but Master Paul is the one at greatest risk of serious harm.

Throughout his thunderous career Tyson made a habit of knocking proven heavyweights out, often with a single sledgehammer. And the last thing any boxer loses is his punch.

Tyson wouldn’t be doing this, even for the money, if he did not believe he has a chance of doing the same to his young paymaster. There is recent film of Tyson knocking the stuffing out of the heavy bag in the gym.

Paul is attempting to forge a boxing career for himself but this will be his biggest test yet

Paul’s upcoming fight against Tyson is likely to fill, in Dallas, the biggest National Football League Stadium in America

Of course he would have to catch the kid but he was always one of the fastest heavies in the world. He showed some of that when training UFC icon Francis Ngannou for his boxing debut in which he knocked down and almost beat Tyson Fury.

Such activity has brought him back to good condition for his age. Mister Tyson is still the last man any mugger could wish to try his luck with in an alley.

Hopefully, he will continue banking the cash from his huge cannabis ranch in Nevada but restrain his liking for the product until July.

Should this event be happening? Preferably not but it is likely to fill, in Dallas, the biggest National Football League Stadium in America. Will the medical profession be aghast? For sure. But maybe for the wrong reason.

Jake Paul admits he is ‘devastated’ after showdown with Mike Tyson is postponed on medical advice… as he reveals when controversial Netflix fight could take place

Jake Paul has spoken for the first time since his controversial fight against Mike Tyson was postponed on medical advice on Friday.

YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul was set to take on former world champion Tyson on July 20 in Texas, but a recent ulcer flare up has left the 57-year-old unable to train.

The incident was the latest of a number of health concerns for Tyson, which have included the veteran claiming he once broke his back, being spotted in a wheelchair, and suggestions that he will die soon.

The fight, which will be broadcast exclusively on Netflix, has been classified as a professional bout, meaning Tyson, who turns 58 on June 30, will return to the professional arena for the first time since 2005.

And, reflecting on the postponement, Paul opened up on his frustrations on Friday night.

The pair were set to face off on July 20, but a recent ulcer flare up left Tyson unable to train

‘Obviously, devastating news,’ he said on a video shared on X. ‘I’m heartbroken, speechless, gutted. We’ve been working so hard over here in this camp.

‘I just feel bad for everyone involved in this event, the undercard. The opportunity has been ripped from all of us.’

However, despite his personal disappointment, Paul did go onto send his well-wishes to Tyson before he outlined the impact he believes the fight will have on the world of boxing.

He added: ‘I do value Mike’s health first and foremost, love that guy. I have so much respect for him and I want Mike to be healthy.

‘And he says he is still going to knock me out and I bought myself some time, so Mike is still talking s**t over there.  You said you wanna do this in Q4, I’m ready, you just need a little bit of time, so I’m ready whenever you are.

‘This is too big of an opportunity and I think this fight is going to change the world and I (will) turn all my Ls into Ws and that’s a motto I live by so…

‘The universe makes no mistakes so let’s see what’s in store. But sorry this didn’t work out to everyone, the fans, love you guys.’

Speaking after the fight was postponed, Tyson had said: ‘I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time.

‘Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flare up, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover.

‘My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good.

‘I appreciate everyone’s patience and can’t wait to deliver an unforgettable performance later this year.’

The incident was the latest of a number of health concerns for the former world champion

The ulcer flare up in question occurred onboard an American Airlines flight from Miami to LA on Sunday, May 26 – forcing flight staff to ask passengers if there was a doctor on board to provide assistance.

Typical symptoms of an ulcer flare up include nausea and vomiting, bloating, belching and gas pain, as well as chest pain and fatigue.

Tyson said that he was ‘doing great’ in recovery, but clearly he wasn’t in good enough health to keep fighting. He even previously joked that he ‘doesn’t need’ to be at 100 percent in order to beat Paul.

The fight – which has faced significant criticism due to the vast age gap between Paul and Tyson – was also supposed to have a co-main event: the rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano. But that too appears to have been pushed back as a result of Tyson’s medical emergency.

When announcing the delay, Most Valuable Promotions, who are staging the event, said that Paul-Tyson will be rescheduled for a later date.

In a statement they said: ‘The upcoming highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will unfortunately be postponed.

‘During a follow up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations.
