Why Prince Philip wasn’t King despite being married to Queen Elizabeth II

Prince Philip married Elizabeth II in 1947, but why didn’t he become King when she ascended the throne?

Prince Philip didn’t bestow the title of ‘King’ when his wife, Elizabeth II became Queen in 1952.

It became a common question as to why he was not the King of England during Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign – and it’s down to a strict rule.

According to Reader’s Digest, the British Parliamentary law makes the rule as to who is up next in the line of succession and what title the monarch’s spouse will have.

The publication wrote that: “In terms of succession, the law looks only to blood, and not to gender. This rule makes the Royal Family tree sound complicated, but it’s actually easily explained.

“In terms of the spouses of royalty, however, that law treats men and women differently.”

Explaining further, Reader’s Digest added that, unlike a woman marrying into the Royal Family, a man “is not eligible to take the male form of his wife’s title”

Reader’s Digest added: “In keeping with this, when Philip Mountbatten married then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, he did not become prince. It wasn’t until 1957 that Queen Elizabeth bestowed the title of ‘prince’ on Philip by issuing a letters patent.”

Previously speaking to Town and Country, royal historian Marlene Koenig said that this is the same for Princess Eugenie’s husband, Jack Brooksbank.

Prince Philip was born on this day, June 10, in 1921. The royal died on April 9, 2021 – just two months before what would have been his 100th birthday.

Unlike Philip, Queen Camilla was granted a female-version title of Charles.

She was known as ‘Queen Consort’ after King Charles ascended the throne in September 2022, but the ‘Consort’ has since been largely dropped.

In February 2022, in her Accession Day message, the late Queen noted that she wanted her beloved daughter-in-law to be known as ‘Queen Consort’ – although it was previously thought she would have another title.

When she married Charles in 2005, it was thought that she would be called ‘Princess Consort’ when he became King.

Following Philip’s death in 2021, Buckingham Palace released a statement.

The statement read: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Less than a year and a half later, on September 8, 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth passed away in Balmoral aged 96.

Prince Harry is thought to be determined to secure a permanent home in the UK as he ‘inevitably’ misses his life in Britain

Prince Harry’s return the UK is ‘inevitable’, according to a royal expert (Image: Getty)

Prince Harry is reportedly on a mission to establish a ‘permanent’ base in the UK, with a royal commentator suggesting he’s yearning for a foothold back in his homeland.

Since stepping away from the royal spotlight in 2020 and setting up life in the US with Meghan Markle, the Duke of Sussex has been without an official UK residence following their eviction from Frogmore Cottage last year. Now, it appears Harry is eager to secure a British home base.

Speaking to the Mirror, Royal author Tom Quinn shared insights: “As time goes by, Harry misses some aspects of his old life in the UK. Inevitably, the honeymoon period where everything in the States is new and exciting is coming to an end and Harry is looking back at the past through rose-tinted spectacles.”

Quinn further revealed: “He misses his Old Etonian and army friends, many of whom have not visited as they don’t get on with Meghan. Harry is determined to find his own permanent home in the UK, which is partly why he’s continuing his legal action to get the British taxpayer to pay for his security.”

The revelations follow Prince Harry’s heartfelt admission in his 2023 tell-all book ‘Spare’ about the deep sorrow he felt upon leaving Frogmore Cottage, his erstwhile Royal abode within the grounds of Windsor Castle. The residence was bestowed upon them by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2019, and the Sussexes independently funded its lavish refurbishments after initially drawing on public funds, which they subsequently reimbursed.

Yet, their tenure in the five-bedroom dwelling was fleeting; by the close of 2019, they had declared their intent to step back from Royal duties and by 2020, Frogmore Cottage was no longer their home.

    General Views Of Frogmore Cottage

In ‘Spare’, Harry recounts a poignant moment at Frogmore Cottage following Prince Philip’s funeral, as he awaited a meeting with his father Charles and brother William. Alone in the cottage, he was struck by a wave of sadness, realising that what was once envisioned as his ‘forever home’ had become just another transient stop in his life.

His words in the memoir resonate: “Once upon a time, this was going to be my forever home. Instead it had proved to be just another brief stop.”

Amidst these personal reflections, Prince Harry is also embroiled in an ongoing legal tussle with the UK Home Office. He has recently escalated his fight over the decision to downgrade his security arrangements when in the UK, taking his case to the Court of Appeal after a High Court judge dismissed his initial challenge.

This legal wrangle began when the Home Office, which oversees policing, revoked his entitlement to automatic police protection during his stays in the UK in February 2020.

Prince Harry had two main fears about attending the wedding ceremony deemed to be the social event of the year, alongside his elder brother, Prince William. This analysis comes from a seasoned Royal observer and ex-employee of King Charles.

Following Prince William’s solo attendance at the opulent union of the Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor and Olivia Henson, without the company of his father, King Charles or spouse, Kate, Grant Harrold, once the butler in service to King Charles, gave an interview to OK! magazine.

Harrold shared: “I’m sure [Harry] would have wanted to attend. But Harry and William shared friends and they have likely been drawn into this dispute. Plus, he may have worried that the rift with William would pull focus from the wedding.”

In addition, Harrold noted: “It will be hard for William to attend the wedding without Kate as I’m sure they planned to go together. They’re such a partnership and he’s his best self when she’s by his side.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest King Charles is deeply upset over missing the grand nuptials of the Duke, despite several acquaintances including his eldest son making an appearance. There has been considerable buzz around the event, now referred to as the ‘society event of the year’.

The Duke of Westminster, who includes Prince George and Archie Sussex among his godchildren, exchanged vows with Olivia Henson in a ceremony which held Royal significance. Despite his close bond with the Royal family, it wasn’t projected that King Charles would be present at the wedding, owing to his persistent health issues.

Mr Harrold fondly recalled the close bond between the families, stating: “The Duke of Westminster’s late father was Charles’ best friend. I witnessed the two families together when I worked with Charles and they are so close”.

King Charles’ ongoing cancer treatments have understandably taken precedence over such engagements. Mr Grand added: “Charles has a special bond with the Duke of Westminster too but if he’s been forced to miss the wedding due to a packed schedule and his ongoing treatment, that will be a bitter pill to swallow and he’ll be devastated.”

In praise of Charles’ commitment, Harrold further added: “He’d commit to a full work schedule if he could and hates to let people down.”

Given the close relationship between them, it is believed that the Duke may have asked Charles not to exert himself by attending the wedding, especially considering Charles had made a trip to Normandy on June 6 to mark the anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Cancer has cast a shadow not only over Charles but also over Prince William and Princess Catherine, who has been battling her own harrowing diagnosis this year. Everyone close to King Charles is hoping for his swift recovery so he can resume his Royal duties and family life.

The motives for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s trip to Nigeria have been questioned by royal expert Rupert Bell, as he claimed the focus seemed to have shifted away from the Invictus Games.

The tour last month saw the couple visit military hospitals and attend sporting events in connection with the Invictus Games, with Nigeria participating in the tournament for the first time last year.

It was during the competition in Germany that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were invited by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff to visit the country.

However, with the revelation that Meghan is 43 percent of Nigeria heritage, Mr Bell told TalkTV that in the aftermath of the visit, much of the attention has been on her.

He explained: “The visit, which I’m sure was deemed to be about Invictus, but all of the fallout from it seems to be about Meghan. Harry’s role in trying to drum up support for Invictus seems to have been put on the backburner.”

Meghan Markle would never have gone to Duke of Westminster’s wedding due to one key reason

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex need to resolve one key issue before Meghan Markle makes her UK return, according to a royal commentator.

Meghan Markle would never have joined her husband Prince Harry on a trip back to the UK, had the royal decided to attend his good friend, the Duke of Westminster’s wedding on Friday for one key reason, a royal commentator has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be absent from today’s lavish ceremony in Chester, where Hugh Grosvenor will be marrying Olivia Henson, despite having been invited.

Around 400 guests will be in attendance, including Harry’s older brother, Prince William, who will be an usher during the service.

Harry and William share a close relationship with Hugh – named Britain’s richest person under 40 – with both of the brothers making him godfather to their sons, Prince Archie and Prince George.

But while sources claimed Harry and Hugh reached a “mutual agreement” that it would be best for him not to attend, it has become clear that had he chosen to do otherwise, Meghan wouldn’t have travelled with him due to concerns regarding their security in the country.

The Telegraph’s royal editor Hannah Furness recently told Hello!’s A Right Royal Podcast: “There is quite a heavy narrative that Meghan and the children won’t be coming back until they can resolve this security issue to their liking.

“But he [Harry] will certainly be coming and going.”

The Duke of Sussex took legal action against the Home Office over the February 2020 decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) that he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection when in the country.

Ravec’s decision came as a result of a change in the duke’s “status” after he stopped being a “full-time working member of the Royal Family”, a judge was told.

In a judgment in February, retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane rejected the duke’s case in a 52-page ruling and concluded Ravec’s approach was not irrational nor procedurally unfair.

Harry previously expressed during a hearing for the case through a written statement: “It was with great sadness for both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020. The UK is my home.

“The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home, as much as where they live at the moment in the United States. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.

“I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too.”

Prince William and George’s sporting double act: How the royal father and son have bonded at the football, cricket and rugby

We know from his love of polo and attendance at Aston Villa matches that Prince William has always had a passion for sport.

But the Prince of Wales’ oldest son, Prince George, is clearly taking after him.

Last month, George joined William when he attended the FA Cup Final at Wembley in his role as president of the Football Association.

Wearing matching ties, the father-and-son duo shared sweet moments during the game and George even helped William hand out the medals to players from winning side Manchester United and runners up Manchester City.

The match was just the latest example of William and George bonding over sport.

They have also watched the cricket and rugby together. William played the latter sport – along with water polo – at university.

Last year, George and William went to France to watch Wales take on Argentina in the Rugby World Cub.

William was there in his role as patron of Welsh Rugby Union.

George, who will one day be the Prince of Wales, was the first to shake the hand of World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont.

It also looked like his father pointed out other illustrious sporting figures and imparted some wisdom as they stood together.

There was a similar reaction to her appearance on Friday’s episode. One person tweeted: “Is that Sue Cleaver at the end? She’s looking amazing. That green really suits her too.” Another person tweeted: “Sue is looking so good.” Sue spoke about experiencing weight loss on Thursday’s episode, sharing: “My weight has been up, down, all over the place … a lot of it was helped by red wine! At the minute, I am a lot thinner but I’ve been ill this year.”

The actor urged: “We know we have a problem. We know we have an addiction. Don’t treat us like we are idiots!” She went on to share her thoughts about apparent “innocent” commentary, including people complimenting her.

She said: “When I’ve lost weight, I can go into a room and someone goes ‘Oh my God, you look amazing! You’ve lost so much weight!’ and all I will hear is that: ‘You looked like an absolute dog when you were big!’ It’s how we talk about it and how we talk around it, that makes a big difference!”

Coleen Nolan responded: “We are our own worst enemy [though] because if I’ve worked hard to lose weight and I walk in a room and someone doesn’t go ‘oh my god you look amazing’ I think ‘well I may as well have carried on eating doughnuts’.” Sue replied to the panellist: “Doesn’t that just tell you how obsessed we are about our outward shape.”

Stacey Solomon has revealed how her festive break to the Caribbean ended badly after she was rushed to hospital on the last day of her family holiday

Stacey Solomon has told how she was rushed to hospital on the last day of her festive holiday to Jamaica.

The Loose Women star took to Instagram to give fans an update and apologised for not coming back on to social media straight away, like she said she would, to give them organisational tips for January.

Revealing she had actually been really ill and was still not feeling 100 per cent, the 34-year-old said: “I know it feels like I’ve just fallen off the face of the earth the last few days and I promised I’d come home and get straight into our January sort out together and I’ve been promising it for months. I’m so sorry.

“We had the worst exit to Jamaica of all time. I can’t even get over what’s happened. It doesn’t feel real. Today’s the first day I’ve felt like I can walk around the house and feel like normal.” Explaining what happened during their Christmas and New Year getaway, which saw Stacey surprise her family with tickets to the Caribbean, the mum-of-five continued: “The day before we were travelling home I started to feel like a bit flu-y, so I was like, ‘Oh, I’m getting that flu that everyone’s got. That’s alright. We’re going home tomorrow so I’ll just get through it and get over it and carry on. So I carried on and then as the day went on, I just felt worse and worse.”

After telling husband Joe Swash to take the kids to dinner while she slept it off, Stacey said Joe came back took one look at her and rang her sister, who is a nurse, because she “looked a mess”. Stacey went on: “My sister comes in the room and I know it’s something serious when my sister comes in the room. She’s a nurse but she’s very much like, she wouldn’t bother. She’s like ‘you’re fine’, unless you’re not fine.

“She came in and was like, ‘We need to sit you up, cool you down, get you some paracetamol.’ Every time she checked my temperature all I remember was her not saying anything. She said to me afterwards my temperature was going up and not coming down.” In the end, the family called for medical help in their hotel and the nurse took one look at Stacey, put her on an oxygen mask, covered her in wet towels and told her she needed to get to hospital immediately.

Once there, Stacey was given an IV drip and fluids and said she instantly began feeling better, even though she was “still rough as hell”. After begging doctors to let her fly home with her family and not remain in Jamaica on her own, they agreed after monitoring her overnight.

Though she managed the flight home, Stacey said that poor husband Joe “had all the kids for 10 hours”. Vowing she would now listen to her body in the future instead of pretending she is OK, she said she was going to “let myself get well” and joked she would be that “weirdo” who was keeping her Christmas decorations up until February while she recovers. She added: “I’m just gonna rest up and hopefully in a couple of days I’ll feel back to normal. But even that, I think I’m gonna take it slow because I don’t ever wanna be in that situation again. It actually scared me a little bit.”

In a later post, Stacey took to Instagram again to tell fans what was wrong with her. Sharing a snap of cuddling her two pet dogs, she wrote: “Teddy and Peanut are the best nurses in the world. Thank you for all of your kind messages. I’ll be back to life soon. Loads of you asking what it actually was. I rambled for 5 minutes and still didn’t say. It was an infection in the end that was causing my fever. But antibiotics are working well so fingers crossed they’ll get rid of it completely.”

Ruth Langsford apologises as she ditches make-up and tells fans to ‘remember what she really looks like’

Loose Women presenter Ruth Langsford has told her fans to ‘remember’ as she ditched her make-up and apologised for her appearance as she showed what she ‘really looks like’

Ruth Langsford has showed her fans what she “really looks like” in her latest social media post.

The Loose Women star took to her Instagram where she gave her followers an update after her Christmas break. She is set to make a return to work and admitted she is “trying to get back to where she was before Christmas”. Ruth posted her update as she made her dinner and prepared her lunch for work.

“I’m using up lots of leftovers. I had lots of peppers, I had a bit of chicken. So, I’ve made a chicken tray bake thing.” She added: “I’ve been prepping all of my food because I’m back to Loose Women tomorrow. Done my breakfast, done my green juice, done my lunch. So, I’m not doing any kind of ‘new year, new me’ thing. I’m just trying to get back to where I was before Christmas, which is not living on Quality Street and gin!”

Ruth then captioned her post: “Next time you see me on the front cover of a glossy magazine remember what I REALLY look like!! #happynewyear.” The TV presenter was flooded with comments as one said: “It’s fantastic that you come on here just as you are, this is the real world and we like you cos of your personality not looking glamorous.”

Another added: “Actually hilarious!! You’ve just made me burst out laughing. Living off quality street and gin! Hahaha! You look fab Ruth! X” Someone else commented: “Love it Ruth… down to earth. Happy new year to you Eamonn & family.” This Morning’s Vanessa Feltz wrote: “You look bloody lovely and guess what? You ARE bloody lovely.” TOWIE’s Suzie Wells added: “We all look like this most of the time which is our beautiful natural selves.”

Ruth has recently addressed the possibility of her making a return to This Morning. She briefly returned to the show for a week last year to present alongside Rylan Clark. However, she said she doubted she would be heading back to the famous sofa. The star still works on ITV’s Loose Women while her husband started working on GB News in January 2022.

Speaking about returning to This Morning, she told Hello!: “I think that ship has sailed. Listen, never say never. I adore that show and it was a dream to work on it. I worked on it before Eamonn, actually people forget that. I say to him: ‘I took you to work, don’t forget!’” While in a chat with Woman&Home, Ruth explained: “I love This Morning but reports that ITV have recently asked me back aren’t true. I laughed when I saw that report. I have no idea where these things come from.”
