Prince Harry admits he ‘suppressed his grief’ after the death of his mother Princess Diana

Prince Harry was just 12 years old when Princess Diana died and he’s now spoken out about the grief of losing his mother and admitted he initially ‘suppressed’ his feelings

Prince Harry has opened up about the death of his mother as he encouraged children to talk about their emotions in a new video.

The Duke of Sussex met with Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity he’s a global ambassador for, as he admitted he “suppressed” his grief when Princess Diana died. Harry was just 12 years old when his mother was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Harry said: “It’s so easy as a kid to think or convince yourself….you convince yourself that the person you’ve lost wants you, or you need to be sad for as long as possible to prove to them that they are missed. But then there’s this realisation of, no, they must want me to be happy.”

Opening up about his own experience, Harry added: “That’s the hardest thing, especially for kids, I think, which is, ‘I don’t want to talk about it because it will make me sad’, but once realising that if I do talk about it, I’m celebrating their life, then actually, things become easier’ as opposed to this ‘I’m just not going to talk about it, and that’s the best form of coping’, when in fact it’s not.”

He admitted it can help someone cope “for a period of time,” but added: “You can’t suppress it for ever. It’s not sustainable. And will eat away at you inside.

“No-one wants to in the position where they are forced to talk about the very thing they don’t want to talk about, especially when every defence mechanism in your mind, nervous system and everything else is saying ‘do not go there’.”

The emotional video comes following Harry’s visit to the charity back in May. The Duke of Sussex was pictured chatting and playing games with bereaved military children as part of a fun-filled event hosted in London by Scotty’s Little Soldiers.

He spent the day with 50 children and young people, aged between six and 22, who have experienced the death of a military parent. Harry also spent time talking to nine members from Scotty’s Council, a group of young people who represent the charity’s other members, who discussed their experiences of growing up without a parent.

After the visit, Harry said: “It was an honour to meet so many of the wonderful families Scotty’s Little Soldiers supports. I have long believed in the mission of this charity, and I truly believe the work they do to foster community and create space for young people to connect, grieve, but also have fun together is life-changing. I am a huge supporter of their work, and very proud to be their first global ambassador.”

Prince Harry is set to receive a high honour at this year’s Excellence in Sport Performance Yearly awards (ESPY) in the United States for his life-long service and using his influence to “change the world”.

At the event, hosted by renowned sports broadcaster ESPN, The Duke of Sussex will be bestowed the Pat Tillman Award for Service. This award recognises individuals from the sporting realm who have notably improved the lives of others.

Harry has received this distinction for initiating the Invictus Games a decade ago. These games offer both physical and mental healing to injured and ill military personnel – including active duty members and veterans.

Previous recipients of this esteemed badge include Marcus Rashford – the Manchester United striker who successfully campaigned for the UK Government to supply free meals to England’s vulnerable children during school holidays amidst the Covid pandemic.

ESPN’s vice-president of production, Kate Jackson, commented: “It’s our privilege to recognise three incredible individuals Steve Gleason, Dawn Staley and Prince Harry. These honourees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalised and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity and perseverance, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them at the 2024 ESPYs.”

ESPN underlined that Harry is being celebrated for his “tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport”.

In recognition of its global effect, ESPN highlighted that the Invictus Games has “transcended borders and impacted lives across every continent”.

The Sussex.com website has confirmed that Prince Harry will be honoured, stating: “During this year’s ESPYs, ESPN will recognize exceptional individuals who exemplify courage, perseverance, and service. Among the esteemed recipients is Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, who will be honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service.”

The 2024 ceremony in Los Angeles will see tennis champion Serena Williams, friend of the Duchess of Sussex, take on hosting duties. The Pat Tillman Award for Service is named after former NFL player and US Army Ranger Pat Tillman, who tragically lost his life in Afghanistan in 2004.

In May, Harry made a trip to the UK for a special event at St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate a decade of the Invictus Games. Having served on two frontline tours in Afghanistan and spent 10 years in the British armed forces, Harry was stripped of his military patronages by his late grandmother, the Queen, in 2021, a year after he stepped down as a senior working Royal.

In response, the Sussex camp fired back with the statement: “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal”. This led to accusations of disrespect towards the Queen and her many years of public duty.

Gleason, a former NFL player who established his Team Gleason charity after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), will be honoured with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. It supports others battling the degenerative disease and successfully advocated for the Steve Gleason Act, ensuring access to speech generation communication technology in the US.

Staley, an Olympic gold-medal winner and head coach of the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. She is recognised for her resilience on the court, advocacy for women’s sports and equality, and her efforts in cancer research campaigning.

A book claims that Prince Harry was ‘disappointed’ his family failed to see a trait he thought Meghan Markle shared with his late mother, Princess Diana

Ever since her relationship with Prince Harry came into public view, Meghan Markle has repeatedly been compared to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

Earlier this year, when investigative journalist Tom Bower released his explosive book ‘Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors’, a number of sensational revelations about the couple surfaced. Amongst the claims, one that particularly stood out was Prince Harry’s hope that Diana’s sisters and best friend would recognise the similarities between Meghan and his mother, which he believed existed.

When they did not, the prince was reportedly “disappointed”.

According to Bower, Earl Spencer, Diana’s brother, was urged to talk to his nephew about his growing closeness with Meghan. In the book, it is claimed that Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Baroness Jane Fellowes, along with Diana’s close friend Julia Samuel, failed to observe any resemblance between Meghan and Harry’s late mother.

Furthermore, it was their view that Meghan might have difficulty blending in with the Royal Family, reports the Mirror.

Bower elaborated: “Since the Vanity Fair article had increased the Cambridges’ suspicion of Meghan, the actress discovered that her neighbour in Kensington Palace had even less time for her.”

“By then, Harry had introduced Meghan to Diana’s two sisters, Jane and Sarah, and her best friend Julia Samuel. Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancee.”

“Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family.”

Prince Harry with Meghan in black

The author continued: “Their unease was voiced by Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother. At William’s request, Spencer weighed in. Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage. His advice provoked a bitter reaction. ‘This was going to be really hard,’ Harry would later reflect on establishing Meghan’s place in the family.”

Bower went on: “One of his recurring concerns was insufficient money if they married. Although Harry annually received about £1.5 million from Charles, Meghan had been advised to continue acting to supplement their income.”

“By that point, Meghan knew from her agent Nick Collins that her acting prospects were limited. Omid Scobie, her official biographer, would accurately summarise her exit from Hollywood. “‘She wanted a more meaningful career,’ he wrote. ‘She could be doing so much more with her platform.

“Her frustration remained. She was tantalisingly close to sealing her future, but nothing was official.”

  • Royal shock : Meghan Markle prefers ‘good PR’ in Nigeria rather than risk being ‘booed’ in the UK

Royal shock : Meghan Markle prefers ‘good PR’ in Nigeria rather than risk being ‘booed’ in the UK

Meghan Markle prefers ‘good PR’ in Nigeria over risk of being ‘booed’ in England

Meghan Markle prefers travelling to Nigeria where she is likely to have a “good PR” opportunity over visiting England due to the risk of being “booed” by royalists who “don’t really like her very much”, a royal expert has said.

The Duchess of Sussex will not join her husband, Prince Harry, on his trip to London to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games next week.

The ceremony will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral and last time the couple were there for a service during the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, they were cheered by many royal fans but were also booed by some people.

But just days after Harry travels to England, Meghan will join him on a trip to Nigeria, where they will have talks about the Invictus Games and will be offered security by the Nigerian government.

Meghan Markle will not join Prince Harry in the UK next week

According to Newsweek royal correspondent Jack Royston, Meghan will have “a very positive welcome” in Nigeria, which she would not have in the UK.

Addressing the incident in which some people booed Harry and Meghan during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Mr Royston told The Royal Report podcast: “The centerpiece of this visit is a service of Thanksgiving for Invictus at St Paul’s Cathedral. Now the last time Meghan went there, Meghan and Harry were booed by royalists. That was during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

“There were cheers as well, but there were certainly boos, and that was during a similar service of Thanksgiving.” Noting that the Duchess might want to avoid a similar incident, Mr Royston said: “By contrast, Meghan will obviously get a very positive welcome in Nigeria.

“So, she may simply be choosing guaranteed good PR over the possibility of another moment of hubris at the hands of monarchists who don’t really like her very much. Meghan has generally been a great supporter of Invictus. She’s continued to attend the tournaments, and also not just the actual games themselves, but the ‘one year to go’ promotional events, too.

For all the latest on news, politics, sports, and showbiz from the USA, go to The Mirror US.

“So, why not this one in Britain, especially since it’s a whole program marking the 10-year anniversary? It’s a long time until it’s going to be the 20-year anniversary. You’d think that she would want to be there.”

Now, an expert said it is “wise” that Meghan will not travel to the UK with Harry. “It’s a wise decision that Meghan isn’t accompanying Harry to the UK for the Invictus Games,” public relations guru Lynn Carratt revealed exclusively to The Mirror. She said: “This event is one of Harry’s greatest accomplishments, that he was already involved in before meeting Meghan.

“If Megan were to return to the UK, the press coverage of the Invictus Games service would likely be overshadowed by her presence, which neither Harry nor Meghan would want.” Lynn then added: “Additionally, there is some hostility towards Meghan in the UK, and it’s understandable that she wouldn’t want to subject herself to negative press or public reception.”

And a royal expert said Meghan would have “terrible memories of the past” if she returned to the UK. According to Charlotte Griffiths, the Mail on Sunday’s Royal Editor, the Duchess will not return to the UK as she “knows she would get a bad reception”.

The expert said it is “sad” that Meghan will not be by her husband’s side, noting Harry will be “so lonely” as he usually attends Invictus events with his wife. Ms Griffiths told GB News: “It’s a really important part of Harry’s soul, and the kind of thing he’d want his wife, maybe even his kids by his side for.

“Meghan is leaving him there alone, and I just think he’s going to cast a really lonely portrait of a man without his friends around him, without his family and without senior members of the Royal Family. And no wife there with him as well.” During a conversation with GB News host Patrick Christys, the royal editor said travelling to the UK would be “really difficult” for Meghan and would bring up “terrible memories” of the past.

Rwanda refuses to guarantee how many UK migrants it will take
Story by David Wilcock, Deputy Political Editor For Mailonline

The Rwandan government today refused to guarantee how many migrants it will take from the UK under Rishi Sunak’s flagship deportation scheme.

The Prime Minister’s plan to deal with asylum seekers arriving in the UK via irregular routes including the English Channel crossing is to place them on a one-way flight to Kigali.

He hopes that the five-year deal will deter other small boats attempting the journey from France and boost Tory poll numbers before the general election later this year.

Yolande Makolo, a spokeswoman for the east African state, told the BBC today that while it expected to receive ‘thousands’ their arrival would be staggered.

Asked by Laura Kuenssberg if Rwanda would be able to process tens of thousands of migrants as part of the deal, Ms Makolo said: ‘We will be able to welcome the migrants that the UK sends over the lifetime of this partnership.
‘What I cannot tell you is how many thousands we are taking in the first year or the second year. This will depend on very many factors that are being worked out right now.’

She had earlier claimed there was a ‘misconception’ that Rwanda was only prepared to take 200 initial migrants, telling the BBC: ‘Journalists have been visiting the initial accommodation that we have secured since the beginning of the partnership. This is Hope Hostel. That particular facility is able to take up to 200 people.

‘However, we have already started initial discussions with other facilities around Kigali and further afield and these will be firmed up and signed once we know how many migrants are coming and when they are coming.

‘So it has never been the case that we can only take 200 initially, that has been a misconception.’

Sir Keir Starmer has said Labour will not keep the Rwanda policy if it wins the next election, but this has prompted questions about what the party would do instead.

Ms Makolo urged critics of the plan not to attack Rwanda ‘unjustly’, and to present a solution to the migrant crisis which was ‘not just deterrence and enforcement’.

‘People are suffering here so we need good solutions and we need to rethink the migration crisis,’ she said.

The spokeswoman later added: ‘Living in Rwanda is not a punishment. It is a beautiful country, including the weather.’

Labour’s national campaign co-ordinator Pat McFadden said if the party was in power it would spend the cash set aside for the Rwanda scheme on ‘a proper operation to crack down on the criminal gangs’.

A PA news agency fact check found payments to the Rwandan government as part of the deal would add up to £490 million by the end of the 2026/27 financial year, should a milestone of 300 migrants sent to Rwanda be reached.

PA found Labour’s claim that the scheme would cost £2 million per migrant to be mostly true, with the price tag decreasing substantially if many more were deported to Rwanda.

Mr McFadden said Labour believed the Government ‘will get flights off’ but did not believe the scheme would provide ‘value for money for the taxpayer’.

He also said he doubted Labour would work to return migrants to the UK from Rwanda should they form the next government.

The PM hopes that the five-year deal will deter other small boats attempting the journey from Franc e and boost Tory poll numbers before the general election later this year.

Piers Morgan slams Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for ‘trash’ move – ‘it stinks’

Piers Morgan has blasted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for behaving like an ‘unofficial renegade royal family’.

Piers Morgan has accused Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of acting like an “unofficial renegade royal family”.

The former GMB presenter has slammed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in another rant – claiming their behaviour “stinks”.

Despite Harry receiving a warm welcome in the UK when he visited last week to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, Piers has torn into King Charles’ youngest son.

“They can do what they like, but I don’t like them doing it as an unofficial renegade royal family,” he told Billy Bush on Extra’s.

“The truth is, the real royal family right now, back here in England, are going through an awful lot of turmoil of all these senior members of the royal family, either dying literally or facing very serious health crisis.

“You have the Duke and Duchess of Montecito running around like a rival royal family trashing their family, trashing the monarchy, but wanting to exploit their royal titles. I think it stinks.”

Piers, who has never been one to give a measured response on the Sussexes, called for Charles to “strip them of their titles”.

Harry and Meghan have just finished their 72-hour trip to Nigeria, which was dubbed an “unofficial royal tour,” and believed to have upset many of the royal family.

“The King and Prince William are firmly of the belief that you are either in or out of the working Royals,” former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK!.

“This (trip) seems to be a rather strange halfway house. I think both the King and the Prince, and indeed the Government will want it to be made clear that Harry is not representing either the Royal Family or Britain on this trip.”

Meghan Markle has sent a message to King Charles and Prince William to not make a fool out of themselves by stripping her and Prince Harry’s royal titles.

A source close to the Duchess of Sussex has revealed what she thinks of reports about the monarch and Prince of Wales having discussions about removing her and Harry’s titles.

For the unversed, royal expert and author Tom Quinn has claimed Charles and William have been having lengthy discussions about doing something about the Sussexes’ titles.

However, the expert noted that “the last thing they want is to give the renegades something else to complain about.”

“William and his father know that even without their royal titles Meghan and Harry would carry on traveling the world as if they were royals and most people in the world will still welcome them.”

Issuing a warning to Charles and William, the insider said that Meghan is confident that the title stripping would only backfire on the royals.

“Charles and William are right to worry that stripping the rogue couple of titles would only result in them with egg on their face,” Meghan’s alleged mouth-piece said, as per Radar Online.

“To many people, who have no idea of royal protocol or even care, Harry and Meghan will always be ‘prince’ or ‘duke and duchess’ no matter what the king does,” the tipster continued.

“So stripping the titles would be a waste of time — and make Charles and William look like petty sore losers.”
