What Prince Harry Said About His History With Drugs

Over the past year, Prince Harry has faced increased scrutiny over his history with illegal drug taking after making a number of revelations about his experiences and their effects in his hit memoir Spare.

In the book—and interviews promoting it—Harry spoke in detail for the first time about his recreational use of cocaine, magic mushrooms and marijuana (illegal in Britain), as well as psychedelics such as ayahuasca as a form of therapy.

Though the prince made clear he was not wishing to encourage the use of these substances, he faced criticism for potentially doing so.

In a more serious form of backlash, a conservative think tank in the U.S., The Heritage Foundation, is seeking access to Harry’s visa paperwork to see if he disclosed his history with drugs when seeking to enter the country.

Initial attempts to access the paperwork were blocked by the U.S. government, with The Heritage Foundation currently embroiled in legal action seeking to have this blockade removed.

As this case remains ongoing, here Newsweek looks at what Harry said about his history with drugs, both in Spare and interviews given since his split from the monarchy in 2020.

‘I Was Trying To Mask Something’

In the 2021 docuseries The Me You Can’t See, developed in collaboration with Oprah Winfrey, Harry discussed how he failed to emotionally process the death of his mother Princess Diana when he was just 12 years old in 1997.

The prince revealed that he spent years trying to “mask” his emotions and in doing so looked to alcohol and drugs.

Prince Harry to Oprah Winfrey in The Me You Can’t See

“I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs. I was willing to do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling. But I slowly became aware that, ok, I wasn’t drinking Monday to Friday but I would probably drink a week’s worth in one day on a Friday or a Saturday night. And I would find myself drinking not because I was enjoying it but because I was trying to mask something.”

    Marijuana School Days

In Spare, billed as a “raw” and “unflinching” memoir telling his life story, Harry discussed his introduction to marijuana when he was a schoolboy at the prestigious Eton College near Windsor Castle.

The prince and his school friends would smoke together in a dormitory bathroom, going on to disclose regular use of the drug throughout his life.

    Prince Harry in Spare

“I don’t remember how we got the stuff. One of my mates, I expect. Or maybe several. Whenever we found ourselves in possession, we’d commandeer a tiny upstairs bathroom, wherein we’d implement a surprisingly thoughtful, orderly assembly line. Smoker straddled the loo beside the window, second boy leaned against the basin, third and fourth boys sat in the empty bath, legs dangling over, waiting their turns. You’d take a hit or two, blow the smoke out of the window, then move on to the next station, in rotation, until the spliff was gone. Then we’d all head to one of our rooms and giggle ourselves sick over an episode or two of a new show. Family Guy. I felt an inexplicable bond with Stewie, prophet without honor.”

    Country Houses and Cocaine

In his book, Harry recounts an incident where a tabloid editor claimed to have photographs of the teenage prince taking cocaine in a bid to convince him to collaborate on an interview.

After calling the editor’s bluff, where no photograph was ever produced, the prince revealed that he had used cocaine at that time, though quickly decided that the effect was not worth the risk associated with it.

At this time though, he said that drugs were an escape from his mental and emotional anguish still impacting him from the death of his mother.

    Prince Harry in Spare

“Of course…I had been doing cocaine around this time. At someone’s country house, during a shooting weekend, I’d been offered a line, and I’d done a few more since. It wasn’t much fun, and it didn’t make me particularly happy, as it seemed to make everyone around me, but it did make me feel different, and that was the main goal. Feel. Different. I was a deeply unhappy 17-year-old boy willing to try almost anything that would alter the status quo. That was what I told myself anyway.”

    Mushrooms and Ayahuasca

In discussing a way of better connecting with his emotions and past trauma, Harry also revealed in Spare his use of psychedelics. These included magic mushrooms and ayahuasca.

    Prince Harry in Spare

“Psychedelics did me some good as well. I’d experimented with them over the years, for fun, but now I’d begun to use them therapeutically, medicinally. They didn’t simply allow me to escape reality for a while, they let me redefine reality. Under the influence of these substances I was able to let go of rigid preconcepts, to see that there was another world beyond my heavily filtered senses, a world that was equally real and doubly beautiful—a world with no red mist, no reason for red mist. There was only truth. After the psychedelics wore off my memory of that world would remain: This is not all there is. All the great seers and philosophers say our daily life is an illusion. I always felt the truth in that. But how reassuring it was, after nibbling a mushroom, or ingesting ayahuasca, to experience it for myself.”

‘These Things Have a Way of Working’

After Spare was published, Harry undertook several interviews promoting it with networks in both the U.S. and U.K.

Speaking to Anderson Cooper for a 60 Minutes special, the prince was asked about his use of psychedelics, after which he made clear he would “never recommend” their recreational use, but accepted that in a controlled environment he found them to be beneficial for his mental health.

Prince Harry to Anderson Cooper, 60 Minutes

Cooper: “You write in the book about psychedelics, Ayahuasca, psilocybin, mushrooms?”

Harry: “I would never recommend people to do this recreationally. But doing it with the right people if you are suffering from a huge amount of loss, grief or trauma, then these things have a way of working as a medicine.”

Cooper: “They showed you something. What did they show you?”

Harry: “For me, they cleared the windscreen, the windshield the misery of loss. They cleared away this idea that I had in my head that—that my mother, that I needed to cry to prove to my mother that I missed her. When in fact, all she wanted was for me to be happy.”

    ‘Public Interest’

In another interview, this time for a British audience, the prince said that he believed it was “important to acknowledge” his past drugs use, but when questioned whether as a royal prince in line to inherit the throne the media had a right to report on it as a matter of public interest at the time (something he has been critical of), he swerved giving an answer.

Prince Harry to Tom Bradby, ITV

Bradby: “There’s a fair amount of drugs [in the book], um, marijuana, magic mushrooms, cocaine. I mean, that’s gonna surprise people.”

    Harry: “But important to acknowledge.”

Bradby: “I mean, I think it’s an example of the scale of honesty. You don’t seem to hold anything back. You tell the story about cocaine through this tabloid editor, you said, came to you and said, ‘I’ve got a picture of you taking cocaine…’”

Harry: “Didn’t come to me, he came to someone else.”

Bradby: “Yeah. OK. ‘But we’re gonna release it unless you give us a tell-all interview,’ whatever it was they wanted. And you say, ‘I called their bluff,’ and you’re quite pleased with it. But I just wanna be clear, are you really saying that, third in line to the throne or whatever you were, you taking a class A drug is not a matter of public interest? Cause I think that’s a question people will have. Do you accept that is a matter of public interest for the press?”

Harry: “I think what’s a matter of public interest is, is the relationship between the institution with the tabloid media. That to me is more public interest in, anything else.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have become the focus of a new viral video as fans praised the couple’s relationship in home movie footage that has resurfaced on social media site TikTok.

Harry and Meghan have shared a number of personal insights into their relationship since going public about it in 2017, followed by their large-scale royal wedding a year later.

Since the couple’s dramatic split from the monarchy in 2020, they have presented fans with carefully curated perspectives into their personal lives, most explicitly through their media projects, such as podcasts, documentaries and memoirs.

Uploaded to TikTok by user harry.nd.meghan on February 23, footage of the couple, which was self-shot and included in their bombshell-packed 2022 docuseries for Netflix titled Harry & Meghan, has gone viral, prompting a warm response from supporters.

“They are just the sweetest!” wrote one TikTok user.

She was very down to earth and real,” posted another, with a further comment reading: “Such a beautiful couple. Love them and hope they stay strong and continue to love each other. 😅🙏👍.”

Harry and Meghan will celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary in May and their public displays of affection at official appearances have increasingly found popularity on social media, most prolifically on TikTok.

In February, the couple made a three-day visit to Canada where they attended events connected with the one-year waypoint marking for the 2025 Invictus Games, which will be held in Vancouver and Whistler.

During their visit, the couple were photographed holding hands and taking part in winter sports exercises, as well as meeting members of the Invictus community and organizers.

Royal fans have highlighted a subtle tribute to Prince Harry and Princess Diana which is on display in Prince William’s London home at Kensington Palace.

Resurfaced footage from a behind-the-scenes video marking King Charles III’s coronation featuring the tribute has gone viral on social media site TikTok.

The tribute comes as fans have increased their focus on Harry and William’s relationship in recent months, after Harry published his memoir Spare, in 2023, which made several revelations about William.

Among these, the prince said that he and his brother had never been as close as the palace and media had portrayed them to the public, recounting a breakdown in relations in 2019 that led to a physical altercation over Meghan Markle’s treatment of palace staff.

Despite family tensions, social media users have highlighted that just five months after Spare‘s release, William still displayed a touching reminder of his brother at his London home.

The public has rarely seen inside the private apartment at the palace, with the coronation footage presenting an opportunity not only to see the interiors but the objects with which they are decorated—including family photographs.

Captioned “This photo in William’s home,” the viral footage highlights a framed photograph displayed on a piano in one of the reception rooms.

The image shows William alongside Harry and Princess Diana, shot in black and white, in a portrait that was used by the princess for her official Christmas card in 1995.

The portrait was clearly one of Diana’s favorites as she kept a framed copy on her desk, which was carefully reconstructed from her personal items for a display at Buckingham Palace in 2017, marking the 20th anniversary of her death.

The TikTok video highlighting the inclusion of Harry and Diana’s photo in William’s home has been viewed over 120,000 times on the social media site so far, gaining in excess of 6,000 likes and numerous comments.

Prince Harry’s PDA Moment With Meghan Markle Caught on Camera

Prince Harry’s protective gesture towards Meghan Markle during a milestone royal appearance is the focus of a new viral video after footage taken in the aftermath of Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022 resurfaced online.

Harry and Meghan will celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary in May. Since splitting from the monarchy in 2020, the couple has spoken in-depth about their relationship across a number of media projects. In his memoir Spare, Harry recounted events that unfolded on the day his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, died and how he had been in Britain at the time to attend charity events with Meghan.

Despite tensions between the couple and members of the royal family still being apparent to the public after being laid bare by Harry and Meghan in their interview with Oprah Winfrey a year earlier, they were reunited in the wake of the monarch’s death.

On September 10, 2022, two days after the queen had died, the couple made their first joint appearance with Prince William and Princess Kate in over two years. The in-laws stepped out together presenting a united front in grief to view floral tributes and meet members of the public outside the gates of Windsor Castle.

Captioned “he will always cover her back!” the clip has been viewed over 22,000 times so far, receiving in excess of 4,800 likes and over 150 comments, many of which have praised the couple.

“What a great man you are Harry; you’re a real prince,” wrote one TikTok user.

“Lovely couple,” posted another, with a further comment reading: “[It] is so Beautiful to see.”

Harry and Meghan’s PDA during the mourning events for the late queen between her death and state funeral was not always universally well received. When the pair were spotted holding hands during the monarch’s lying-in-state ceremony at Westminster Hall on September 14 they were criticized by some social media users and commentators as being disrespectful.

This didn’t deter the couple who were reportedly once again spotted hand-in-hand during the queen’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey five days later.

Atouching public display of affection (PDA) shared between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their visit to Canada to mark the one-year waypoint to the 2025 Invictus Games has won praise from fans on social media.

The duke and duchess embarked on a three-day visit to Whistler and Vancouver on February 14, to attend a series of events in preparation for next year’s games which will be the first to include winter sports such as adaptive skiing.

The games support and showcase the rehabilitation of wounded, sick and injured ex-armed forces veterans through sports and have formed the core working output of Prince Harry since he co-founded the initiative in 2014.

Since he first started dating Meghan in 2016, Harry has included his wife in a number of appearances connected with Invictus. They made their first joint public appearance at the 2017 games in Toronto, and she has attended every major tournament in some way since then. Meghan also featured in Harry’s Heart of Invictus Netflix docuseries which aired in 2023.

On Wednesday, the couple attended the Invictus Games “One Year To Go” training camp in Whistler. Harry took part in some adaptive sports drills in the snow, supported by Meghan as they also met with organizers and participants.

“The Cutest couple,” one TikTok user wrote of the moment highlighted in a post uploaded by user harry.nd.meghan, with another adding: “Oh Canada! Where all the magic began. I love this for them.”

Meghan made a stylish appearance for the occasion wearing a chic new Calvin Klein coat styled with a black knitted beanie hat and boots by the American all-terrain brand, SOREL.

The couple’s visit to Canada marks their first joint public appearance since they attended a premiere screening of the biopic Bob Marley: One Love with movie executives in Jamaica in January.

Harry and Meghan’s entertainment industry careers as content creators producing docuseries and podcasts has become a subject of increased public interest in recent days.

On February 13, Meghan announced through the couple’s newly branded “Office of Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex” website that she has signed a new podcasting deal with the audio network, Lemonada.

“I’m proud to now be able to share that I am joining the brilliant team at Lemonada to continue my love of podcasting,” Meghan said in a statement. “Being able to support a female founded company with a roster of thought provoking and highly entertaining podcasts is a fantastic way to kick off 2024.”

The duchess will re-release her 12-episode Archetypes podcast through the network onto open platforms and will record a new show, details of which have yet to be announced.

Meghan Markle’s touching moment with King Charles was spread through these actions

Meghan Markle’s relationship with her father-in-law, King Charles III, has become the focus of a new viral video after footage from the royal’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry resurfaced on TikTok.

King Charles's touching gesture for Meghan goes viral after cancer shock | Royal | News | Express.co.uk

Meghan’s relationships with members of the royal family were pulled into focus in 2020 after the duchess stepped down as a working member of the monarchy alongside Harry and moved to the U.S.

Meghan joined the royal family upon her marriage to Harry at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, Berkshire, in England, on May 19, 2018. The couple met in 2016 and became engaged a year later. In 2024, they will celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary, and together they have two children: Prince Archie, 4; and Princess Lilibet, 2.

Little is known about Meghan’s relationship with her father-in-law, the king. In her 2022 Netflix docuseries, she described Charles as “charming,” but she did not attend his May 2023 coronation in London with husband Harry; it happened to take place on her son’s fourth birthday.

Uploaded to TikTok by user @europeanroyals_ on March 28, one of Meghan’s most-touching exchanges with Charles has gone viral, spotlighting the moment the then-Prince of Wales walked her down the aisle at her wedding.

The decision for Charles to walk Meghan down the aisle was an unusual one and received widespread coverage at the time. It followed a highly publicized set of events, which saw Meghan’s own father, Thomas Markle, miss the high-profile event following a paparazzi collaboration and medical emergency.

The father of the bride traditionally walks her down the aisle at her wedding. In Markle’s absence, there was speculation that Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland, would step in to fulfill the role. However, on the day, Charles met his future daughter-in-law halfway through her walk at the chapel and guided her to Harry.

The viral clip has received in excess of 11,200 likes and over 140 comments, many of which have praised the royals and their interaction.

“The love the King shows Meghan is so special,” wrote one TikTok user.

“This was such a touching moment with the king. You can tell he liked Meghan. I’m sad she didn’t go to the coronation,” posted another, with a further comment reading: “Gorgeous wedding. The best royal wedding of all time.”

It was in the 2022 Harry & Meghan docuseries that Meghan revealed she personally asked Charles to walk her down the aisle at her wedding.

“Harry’s dad is very charming,” she told viewers, before going on to note her own father’s absence.

“I said to him, like, ‘I’ve lost my dad in this.’ So, him as my father-in-law was really important to me,” Meghan said.

“So, I asked him to walk me down the aisle, and he said yes,” she added. “The whole thing was surreal.”

Charles has made few public comments about Harry and Meghan since their split from the monarchy. However, in his accession speech, given in the days after he became king, he made a touching reference to the couple.

“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas,” Charles said.

Meghan Markle’s last-ditch attempt to salvage famous friendship as network ‘falls apart’

In a far cry from Harry and Meghan’s star-studded wedding in 2018, the Duchess of Sussex is reportedly making a big effort to keep her dwindling set of celebrity friends

Meghan Markle is said to be making eleventh hour attempts to save her famous friendships, including sending a subtle message to Beyoncé in public.

The royal reportedly wore a specific clothing brand while shooting a new Netflix series in Beverly Hills Park last week with the aim of letting the singer know that “they’re still friends”, according to a celebrity insider. The Duchess of Sussex, 42, was spotted “specifically” wearing a tracksuit from Beyoncé’s Ivy Park brand at the shoot.

This apparent tactic comes amid claims that Meghan has been seeking out ways to keep hold of her precious few high profile friendships, as Hollywood’s elite have been “distancing themselves” from her and Prince Harry. “Meghan was filming for her new Netflix series and specifically chose to wear Ivy Park to highlight her connection to Beyoncé and send a message that they’re still friends, ” a source claimed to Heat.

    Meghan Markle

Meghan is slowing losing her famous pals, according to one insider (Image: No credit)

“With practically every other famous friend distancing themselves from her and Harry, Meghan is understandably worried that their Hollywood network is falling apart, and Bey is the most well known of the few stars who will still associate with her”, they suggested. The royal wedding in 2018 saw a host of A-list celebrities in attendance, including the Clooneys and Idris Elba, but the source now claims that Meghan feels like she needs Beyoncé’s support to “save the Sussex brand”.

Amidst Harry’s ongoing feud with his brother, for example, the Beckhams have reportedly sided with the William and Kate. Meghan is “really going for it” to try and save as many of the dwindling celebrity friendships, including trying to befriend Beyoncé’s sister, Solange Knowles, as well as Tyler Perry, who is friends with the singer.

According to the source, the royal also invited Beyoncé herself to a July 4 party despite “not having spoken to her in months”. She also is said to have contacted the singer’s production company, Parkwood Entertainment, regarding a new project.

King Charles’ home at Highgrove also sells high end, organic products such as jams and honey, and there have been suggestions of a Royal rivalry between the two brands

Meghan Markle’s foray into the world of homeware sales, featuring items like bespoke jams and dog treats, has been stirring up quite the buzz lately.

Following murmurs that Meghan is seeking King Charles’ endorsement for her lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard, an insider spilled to OK! Magazine’s US edition that the Duchess of Sussex is “looking for support wherever she can get it.” They added: “Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are at the top of her list, but she is shooting even higher and would love to get King Charles to give his stamp of approval.”

This intrigue emerges amid whispers of a possible competitive edge between the Royals, who have a history of marketing similar home and gift items, and Meghan’s new venture. With King Charles’ own Highgrove residence offering premium organic delights such as jams and honey, the notion of any friction seems beneath Royal concern, according to former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond.

Jennie said: “I absolutely refuse to buy into suggestions of a petty rivalry between Meghan’s products and the release of new products from the Highgrove estate,” She added, “Highgrove has been coming up with new products for years now. The marketing might have become more sophisticated over time, but there has always been publicity about the organic produce from the farm and gardens.

“I really don’t think that Charles or his marketing people would sink so low as to try to deliberately compete with or scupper Meghan and her team. Why would Charles want to make things worse than they already are? So I think it’s a load of old nonsense and would be beneath him.”

Meghan Markle’s foray into the artisan jam market with her American Riviera Orchard lifestyle brand has set Royal tongues wagging, with insiders expressing a collective sigh of relief, say experts. The Duchess of Sussex’s latest business move is seen as a refreshing change from the much-anticipated “tell-all” book that had been expected by Royal enthusiasts.

Emma Clifton, a journalist at Australian Women’s Weekly, suggested that this pivot towards a more homely enterprise could be seen as good news for the Royals. She said: “Considering how much anticipation there was for Meghan’s supposed ‘tell-all-novel’, her pivot into domestic goddess should surely mean there are a few sighs of relief around the palace…for now.

Celebrity PR guru Waylon Tate spoke to Australian Women’s Weekly about Meghan’s distinct approach to branding her new venture.

“What I’ve seen so far, although she’s been pretty clandestine about it – everything surrounding this new brand, is that it’s Meghan and it’s Meghan alone. You can even see it on Instagram. It’s not Meghan and Harry – it’s by Meghan,” said Tate. “This is the emancipation of Meghan. It’s her saying, ‘I’m a smart, savvy businesswoman. And here’s an introduction to my family on my terms’.”

Luke Shaw responds as England handed referee involved in ‘match fixing’ vs Netherlands

German referee Felix Zwayer was suspended for six months in 2006 after being caught up in a match-fixing scandal but is now considered among UEFA’s top match officials

Luke Shaw insists that England aren’t focused on the fact UEFA have appointed a referee who was involved in a match fixing scandal to oversee their Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.

German official Felix Zwayer secretly served a six-month ban in 2006, having been found to have accepted a €300 (£250) bribe while assisting disgraced referee Robert Hoyzer, who was subsequently jailed for two years. When he and three other high-ranking referees informed the German football federation (DFB) about Hoyzer’s match-fixing, Zwayer was suspended for six months.

His ban was kept under wraps until a German newspaper uncovered the decision in 2014. Zwayer’s suspension was back in the spotlight three years ago when England star Jude Bellingham, then playing for Borussia Dortmund, slammed the referee during a post-match interview and referenced the ban.

Now Bellingham will meet Zwayer again as the German takes charges of England’s clash with the Netherlands in Dortmund on Wednesday, battling it out for a place in the Euro 2024 final against France or Spain. But when asked if his appointment was in their thinking at all, England team-mate Shaw confidently replied: “Not at all.”

The Manchester United defender added: “We have to respect UEFA on whoever they decide to pick as ref. That won’t change anything for us, we just focus on the game at hand and not focus on the refs we are given.”

Bellingham brought up the match-fixing scandal after Zwayer gave a penalty against Dortmund in their late 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in November 2021. The England midfielder fumed: “It hits [Mats Hummels’ arm] and I don’t even think he’s looking at the ball but you know you can look at a lot of the decisions in the game.

“You give a referee that has match-fixed before, the biggest game in Germany what do you expect?”

The DFB fined Bellingham €40,000 (£33,970) and Zwayer took two months off amid the fallout. The 43-year-old referee says that he was asked by colleague Hoyzer to fix the result of a second-division game between Rot-Weiss Essen and Cologne.

“When I got this firm offer from Hoyzer, I went to my refereeing colleagues,” Zwayer claims. “I stress once again that I strongly rejected this offer straightaway.”

He has consistently denied being involved in Hoyzer’s fix of Wuppertal and Werder Bremen B’s clash in 2004, although a DFB investigation discovered that Zwayer had accepted a payment from Hoyzer.

5 things spotted as all 26 England players train before Netherlands showdown

Gareth Southgate was able to get a look at all 26 of the players in his squad ahead of England’s crunch Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands on Wednesday

After a dramatic penalty shoot-out win in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, England are looking to keep their dreams of glory alive against the Netherlands.

Gareth Southgate’s team have been solid defensively while underwhelming further forward, scoring just five times in their five Euros games so far. There have been calls for the manager to shuffle his pack, though it remains to be seen whether he will stick or twist.

Ronald Koeman’s Oranje overcame Turkey in their quarter-final to set up a meeting with England in Dortmund. They have a number of players with Premier League experience, including Liverpool duo Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, and Southgate will need to decide whether to stick with his tried and trusted players or spring a surprise.

England’s full squad trained on the eve of what will be their third semi-final appearance in four major tournaments and a chance to reach the country’s first men’s final on foreign soil. All 26 members of Gareth Southgate’s squad trained on Tuesday lunchtime ahead of making the trip from their Blankenhain base, and Mirror Football has picked out a few points of interest from the session.

    1. Guehi strapped up

Marc Guehi was suspended against Switzerland so was unable to play. However, the Crystal Palace defender has also been suffering with the shoulder injury he picked up against Slovakia.

And while he is back in tracking, there appears to be enough concern regarding the injury. Guehi was spotted with some shoulder strapping on during England’s latest session.

Given he trained – and there has been no suggestion that he could miss the game – Guehi appears likely to be fit. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that medical staff have been keeping a close eye on him.

    2. Unused players all smiles

There have been calls for Gareth Southgate to make better use of his squad, but those not involved so far still seem very much part of the group. Joe Gomez and Lewis Dunk are among those forced to watch on from the sidelines, but we saw them getting down to business in Blankenhain.

Backup goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was spotted celebrating wildly with Bukayo Saka as England squeezed past Switzerland. There appears to be a togetherness in the group, regardless of whether any members of the squad have private frustrations about their lack of minutes.

As Ivan Toney showed in the knockout games, you never know when your opportunity will come. It’s all about being prepated, and these sessions are opportunities to show that’s the case.

    3. Kane fit and ready

Harry Kane was substituted late on against Switzerland, meaning he was unavailable to take a penalty in the shoot-out. However, he played down suggestions the issue which forced him off might also keep him out on Wednesday.

“I’m good,” Kane told BBC Sport after the weekend victory. “I had double cramp in my calf. Penalties, it is like for like because Ivan [Toney] is incredible. I will be fine.”

Kane was spotted exchanging words with Gareth Southgate during the session as the pair attempt to figure out what’s needed to progress on Wednesday. Only time will tell whether they have the winning formula.

    4. Shaw closing in on start

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw appears to have suffered no ill effects of his brief cameo against Switzerland. The left-back came off the bench to make his first appearance of the tournament.

The 28-year-old played just over 40 minutes for the Three Lions. He was pictured taking part in the latest training session so appears well over his injury issues.

It will certainly be a relief to Southgate, who could be tempted to hand Shaw his first start of the tournament. England’s left side has looked slightly off-colour during the Euros and the Man United star could potentially be the remedy that they’re looking for.

    5. Toney all eyes on goal

One man who could potentially have done enough to force himself into contention is Brentford frontman Ivan Toney. Introduced for Harry Kane, he certainly made an impression against Switzerland – not to mention his fearless, no-look penalty.

Social media have had their fun with Toney and his talents, while the FA’s media team have done the same. But it was down to business in training.

The striker was as determined as ever – while he also scored a stunning goal in training on the volley from Pickford’s pass. One of those against the Netherlands and it would certainly be hard to ignore his shout for a start.
