Former Loose Women host, Andrea McLean, has admitted she was “relieved” when Strictly Come Dancing bosses told her she wouldn’t be on the show.

The seasoned presenter, 54, was on the reserves list for the BBC staple, which has just announced chaperones will be present in the training rooms for all future series after Graziano Di Prima is alleged to have mistreated last year’s contestant Zara McDermott.

Despite not making it onto the show, Andrea says she still had to practice, which she says she found “so scary”. Speaking about the experience in a interview before Graziano was axed from the show following the misconduct claims, she said: “I think I was the only celebrity who was relieved when they were told they weren’t needed.”

Zara broke her silence on Tuesday, saying she has been “wrestling with the fear of opening up” in a poignant post on Instagram. Stating the Strictly call was a “dream come true” having wanted to be on the show since she was a “little girl”, she shared: “Reports have been made about my treatment on the show and there were witnesses to some events, as well as videos of particular incidents, which are incredibly distressing to watch.

Following her statement, the BBC made one of its own, confirming it would be making changes ahead of the new series, predominantly to rehearsals. They wrote: “The BBC is today announcing additional steps to strengthen welfare and support on Strictly Come Dancing. Concerns that have arisen in recent months have been fundamentally about training and rehearsals.

“The actions we announce today are designed to address that. We have taken the decision to introduce the following additional practical steps. Going forward, we will have a production team member present during training room rehearsals at all times; increase existing support with the addition of two new roles on the show dedicated to welfare support – a Celebrity Welfare Producer and a Professional Dancer Welfare Producer; and deliver further training for the production team and crew.”

Kate Phillips, BBC’s Director of Unscripted, added: “Whilst we know our shows have been positive experiences for the vast majority of those who have taken part, if issues are raised with us, or we’re made aware of inappropriate behaviour, we will always take that seriously and act. Concerns that have arisen have been fundamentally related to training and rehearsals. The decisive steps we have taken and are announced today, act to further strengthen the welfare and support in place for everyone involved.”

Now, I can’t confirm exactly what was said in the heat of the moment, but witnesses claim Diego tore the invitation to literal pieces while passionately reminding Harry that, unlike Hollywood, being a royal meant using one’s platform to uplift charitable causes, not line their own pockets. He also gave a little lecture about giving back to the sport that had provided so many memories for Harry without expectation of payment. In not so many polite words, Diego informed Harry his services, both on and off the field, would be better spent elsewhere if money was the priority versus goodwill. Ouch.

Now, friends, I can only imagine the steam shooting out of both men’s ears during that blistering takedown across the pond. Sources say a red-faced Harry sheepishly ended the call while Diego’s staff celebrated their boss drawing a hard line against Sussex entitlement and opportunism. Of course, Harry’s advisers spun it as a scheduling conflict preventing attendance, but no one believes that bogus excuse after such a monumental public shaming from a figure revered in polo circles. So in the end, it seems our formerly fun-loving prince got a harsh lesson that his royal brand doesn’t translate into a blank check everywhere he goes. With global fame must also come responsibility, something Harry is still adjusting to post-Megxit, it seems.

So, in summary, it looks like Harry learned the hard way that European polo bigwigs have no time for money-grubbing freeloaders, royal or not. Gotta love Diego for putting our wayward prince firmly back in his place. They’re obviously still trying to do damage control as news spreads. The championship chairman called me a short while ago to apologize profusely for any misunderstanding between us, though I think they were just as stunned by Harry’s cash demand. Moving forward, they’ve made it clear no royal family members or sponsors will be subjected to any hosting fees. This event is to promote the sport, not personal profiteering. So in that sense, hopefully, a valuable lesson has been learned.

That said, tearing up the form was still an overreaction on my part and not the professional way to handle such a situation, so I may owe an apology to Harry’s team too when things calm down. Either way, it’s sadly put a damper on an otherwise magnificent finale. All we can do now is wait and see how things unfold.

During one segment, Coleen asked if people start to lose their mobility as they get older. Linda revealed that she suffers from a ‘dodgy knee’ and is in need of a knee replacement but has been putting it off.

Linda joked: “Well you are 111.” Everyone burst out laughing as Janet replied: “Linda, you’ll regret that later.” Janet then revealed that following a recent MRI scan she has been told that she needs to have a hip replacement.

Co-star Judi Love added: “I’ve realised now in my 40s that I could twist an ankle and it takes longer to heal than when I was in my 30s so I’m much more conscious of things that I am doing and that could be what I am eating or getting exercise.”
