Madeleine McCann prosecutors have admitted “the clock is ticking” as they scramble to charge Christian Brueckner over her disappearance.

The German paedophile was sensationally cleared this morning of carrying out a string of unrelated sex crimes in Portugal. Furious prosecutors have said they will take the case to the Supreme Court to appeal the verdicts and ask for a retrial.

But if they fail Brueckner will walk free from prison next September at the end of his seven-year sentence for rape. The only other way he can be kept behind bars is if the 47-year-old is charged over Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance.

Police are powerless to stop him leaving Germany, including to countries who do not have an extradition treaty. Madeleine prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters admitted for the first time that they are in a race against time to charge him.

“Christian Brueckner is our prime suspect and still our only suspect,” he told the Mirror outside court in Braunschweig. “Nothing has changed in the last four years. We have evidence that he killed Maddie McCann.

“We have no forensic evidence, but we have evidence. If it’s enough, I can’t say at the moment. The clock is ticking. We only have one year. I’m not worried but we have to realise that we maybe have to come to a decision next summer.

“If the Supreme Court rules in our favour before his release, then we will try to get an arrest warrant for his retrial on these cases. But if they say there will be no retrial then we only have the Maddie case.

“If we don’t have enough evidence, then he will walk free from prison. We can charge him later, obviously, but If he leaves Germany then it’s not easy for us to bring him back for trial. For a trial in Germany you must be here, you must be part of the trial.

“We can’t stop him going wherever he wants to go after he is released. It would be a problem to bring him back to Germany. The only way is to get an arrest warrant before his release. And there are only two possibilities left – a retrial or the Maddie case.

“The clock is ticking. We only have one year. Now is not the time for us to put it on the table and decide if we should charge him. Maybe we will come to this point in the next year. Maybe we have to put it on the table then.

“There will be no new trial before Christian Brueckner’s time in prison comes to an end in September next year. We can’t wait for other trials. We have to look forward to the decision of the Supreme Court.”

Florida residents have been issued a major evacuation as Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on Wednesday morning with winds of up to 180mph – with the Mayor warning ‘if you stay you will die”.

There are fears that the hurricane’s winds and expected massive surge could bring destruction to areas already reeling from Helene’s devastation 12 days ago and still recovering from Ian’s wrath two years ago. Almost the entirety of Florida’s west coast is now under a hurricane warning.

The hurricane scale includes five categories based on the storm’s sustained wind speed, as well as the potential damage to property – ranging from “some damage” to “catastrophic”. The highest level is Category 5, which refers to a storm reaching wind speeds of 157mph or higher.

Milton is classed under Category 5, but there is speculation that as the hurricane “supercharges” into a huge storm, it might actually reach wind speeds that would make it fall under an unprecedented Category 6 – with winds of over 192mph. Retired scientist Jim Kossin told USA Today that Category 5 is “becoming more and more inadequate with time because climate change is creating more and more of these unprecedented intensities.”

Orlando meteorologist Noah Bergen described the storm as “nothing short of astronomical” as he wrote on X, formerly called Twitter: “This is nothing short of astronomical. I am at a loss for words to meteorologically describe you the storms small eye and intensity. 897mb pressure with 180 MPH max sustained winds and gusts 200+ MPH.”

He also said Milton is the fifth strongest hurricane ever recorded by pressure. The expert added: “This hurricane is nearing the mathematical limit of what Earth’s atmosphere over this ocean water can produce.”

The centre of Hurricane Milton could come ashore Wednesday in the Tampa Bay region, which has not endured a direct hit by a major hurricane in more than a century. Scientists expect the system to weaken slightly before landfall, though it could retain hurricane strength as it churns across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. That would largely spare other states ravaged by Helene, which killed at least 230 people on its path from Florida to the Carolinas.

“This is the real deal here with Milton,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor told a news conference. “If you want to take on Mother Nature, she wins 100 per cent of the time.” The mayor also warned the city’s nearly 400,000 residents that if they don’t evacuate before the hurricane makes landfall, they risk dying.

Castor told CNN: “If you choose to stay … you are going to die.” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said on Monday that it was imperative for debris from Helene to be cleared ahead of Milton’s arrival so the pieces cannot become projectiles. More than 300 vehicles gathered debris Sunday.

As evacuation orders were issued, forecasters warned of a possible 8- to 12-foot storm surge in Tampa Bay. This is the highest ever predicted for the region and nearly double the levels reached two weeks ago during Helene, said National Hurricane Centre spokesperson Maria Torres.

The storm could also bring widespread flooding, with five to 10 inches of rain forecast for mainland Florida and the Keys, and as much as 15 inches expected in some places. The Tampa metro area has a population of more than 3.3 million people. “It’s a huge population. King Charles will pause his cancer treatment while taking part in a high-profile overseas visit after getting the go-ahead from doctors.

Both he and Queen Camilla are gearing up to travel to Australia and Samoa next week as part of an autumn visit. The King and Queen arrive for a nine-day tour to the countries on October 18, which also includes a four-day visit to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting on the island nation.

Since Charles, 75, was diagnosed with cancer in February, he has been having weekly treatment. However, it is understood that while this will continue until he is due to travel, the treatment will stop briefly for 11 days while he is out of the country but will then resume when he returns.

It comes as the King has been preparing for the huge trip, his first to Australia since becoming King, by following a renewed health regime, immersing himself in nature and the company of loved ones.

It was revealed that Charles, who has long been an advocate of alternative therapies, has complimented his chemotherapy treatment for cancer with a love of the great outdoors. Sources close to the monarch say the King believes his desire to “get lots of fresh air and encourage family visits” has been a main factor in his continued recovery from the disease.

It is said that ‘workaholic’ Charles has had to be “persuaded to be mindful of pacing his diary”, he has since found great solace in focusing on his recovery to get back to his best. A source said: “The King, by his very nature, is a workaholic. If he’s not on public engagements, he is working on the next set while staying across his government papers or responding to correspondence.

“He hasn’t really slowed down despite the protests from those around him, but it has been important to him to remain to be seen. Even during his treatment, he was keen to make sure things were in place for him to make a full-time return. Now things are moving in a very positive direction which has enabled him to make long-term plans.”

Reports the King could press ahead with 12 engagements a day while in Australia and Samoa were dismissed by aides, who confirmed the utmost care had been taken to tailor specifics in line with palace doctors who are confident Charles will be able to miss out on his scheduled cancer treatment for the period he is away. As part of the visit, Charles and Camilla will lay a wreath at the Australian War Memorial, and visit the “For our Country” memorial, dedicated to the service of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

In the capital Canberra, they will be welcomed to the Australian parliament by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The royal couple will attend a barbeque in Sydney and visit the iconic opera house perched on the harbour. Perhaps most poignantly the King will meet two cancer doctors, both Australians of the Year who were recognised for their work on skin cancer.

Royal fans were, at large, delighted with the news that the ever-popular Prince Harry had found love and was settling down and the whole thing seemed to many to be straight out of a fairytale. However, the pair later revealed the announcement of their engagement had not been a candid affair, with Meghan calling it a “rehearsed” and “orchestrated” moment in the couple’s six-part documentary series released on Netflix.

Since stepping back as working royals in 2020, Meghan and Harry have been candid about the difficulties they faced whilst living inside the monarchy. From their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 – which levied allegations of racism against the Royal Family and claimed the royal institution had failed to support Meghan when she was suicidal – to Harry’s bestselling memoir Spare – which saw him dive into the long term issues he has had with his family and royal position since childhood – the pair haven’t held back.

In their six-part Netflix documentary series, the couple provided a deep dive look into their love story, and the journey that led them to move across the Atlantic and set up a new life in California. Starting from the early days of their courtship, exploring their fairytale royal wedding, and to their exit from the UK, the series was a comprehensive look at Harry and Meghan’s life over the last few years. In one scene, the couple broke down their iconic engagement announcement, with the Duchess calling it an “orchestrated reality show”.

The candid moment occurred in the third episode of the series, which was released in December 2022. After calling the engagement interview “orchestrated” Meghan added “it was rehearsed” and claimed that the couple had been prepped ahead of time on what to say and how to behave.

Clips of other senior royals like Kate and Queen Camilla commenting on the news of the engagement were then shown onscreen before returning to the interview of Meghan and Harry. “My point is, we weren’t allowed to tell our story because they didn’t want…” Meghan said, before her husband agreed saying: “We’ve never been allowed to tell our story.” Meghan then replied, “That’s true…that is consistent…until now.”

The journalist who conducted the interview disputed this version of events, however. Mishal Husain was on BBC Radio Four with Jonny Diamond – royal correspondent for the BBC – when she heard this claim for the first time, and audibly gasped in response to it, before saying: “We know recollections may vary on this particular subject, but my recollection is definitely very much ‘asked to do an interview, and do said interview’.”

Both the Sussexes appear to be taking a different approach to their work compared to several years ago when the likes of their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix docuseries and Harry’s memoir, Spare, railed against their royal relatives and time as working royals – which proved very controversial.

And according to PR expert, Ed Coram James, chief executive of PR firm Go Up, while Harry is forging ahead by now focusing more on his charitable endeavours, Meghan has a ” trickier road to reputational rehabilitation”.

Speaking to the Mirror, he explained: “This is because she simply hasn’t done anything of the scale or popularity as Harry’s work with Invictus or conservation. And, it truly takes something of that scale to rescue a reputation that’s taken a hit as big as theirs. But, she has gone quiet, and been very disciplined about this. That’s the first step.”

So what caused her the most damage to her brand and how can she overcome this? Ed said: “She attacked the Royal Family. And, broadly speaking, Brits love the Royal Family. Unfortunately for Meghan, there is a heavy degree of own-goal to this. Her PR campaign against the royals misfired so badly, that she came out of it appearing vindictive, spoiled, arrogant and attention-seeking. And the people she tried to portray as the villains, came out of it looking, measured, mature and, frankly, Kingly.

“When you already have a negative image of someone, and you hear one person saying that that person is lovely, and another saying that she’s terrible, you’re naturally inclined to gravitate towards believing the person that says that they’re terrible. We love a good echo chamber, and we’re not too keen on taking on board new information and using that to help us challenge our deeply ingrained and conditioned beliefs.

“Again, her way to recover from this is the same way to redeem the reputation of her brand. Be quiet. Be patient. Be disciplined. Produce excellent work. Promote excellent charities. And no more attack pieces or PR misfires. If she does this, and for long enough, people will be able to start taking another look. And likely, in doing so, decide that they’ve got her wrong. Or, at the very least, that she deserves another chance.”

It comes after Meghan’s rare red carpet appearance saw her look changed while in the spotlight, according to body language expert Judi James. She told the Mirror: “Meghan’s sudden appearance on the red carpet here seems to show some body language and styling choices that involve the kind of changes that might be making a few deliberate statements.

“Her non-verbal signalling is all about looking coy, slightly vulnerable and even slightly shy. Although she seems to be on her usual form when it comes to placement and direction, her actual posing performances for the cameras lack her usual levels of confidence and assertiveness. She seems to be projecting the idea that she is sweet and rather cute.

“When she spots her friend on the red carpet she throws both hands out and joins her, clasping her hand to register friend-based bonding while also putting her hand underneath in the more passive position as though she is keen to let her friend take the lead. “She even pulls her friend’s hand in front of her own torso to hold it like a protective barrier, in the kind of move you might see from a shy child.

The monarch’s heartfelt yearning for reconciliation comes on the heels of the ongoing tensions between his sons, partly stemming from Prince Harry’s bombshell revelations during his chat with Oprah Winfrey.

A palace insider shared how the King harbours a dream of familial unity, stating: “King Charles wants nothing more than peace to be restored in his family. He wants to draw a line under their past feuds and for Prince William and Prince Harry to get along – and what better timing than his birthday to bring them together.”

Despite enduring his battles, including the public revelation of his own cancer diagnosis earlier this year, King Charles remains devoted to his Royal responsibilities, reports the Irish Star.

The insider noted: “King Charles has been through an awful lot since becoming king, and has been gallant in carrying out his duties while facing his own health woes as he announced he had cancer earlier this year. Now he wants nothing more than to make memories with his wife, sons and grandchildren. This is what he will treasure the most – especially as his milestone birthday approaches.”

Prince Harry’s rocky ties with his dad King Charles and brother Prince William have been the subject of much speculation. In his tell-all book Spare, Harry laid bare his Royal life and took swipes at various relatives. He particularly singled out Queen Camilla, alleging she fed stories about him to the press.

Yet, following some soul-searching, Charles seems more inclined towards mending fences. “Since inheriting the crown, he has spent more time exploring theologies and the teaching of their central tenets including the nature of forgiveness,” an insider claimed.v

Talking to the Daily Mail, the insider disclosed that Charles has gained “spiritual nourishment” from dialogues with clerics, which has led to a greater willingness to make amends with Harry, who’s been residing in California with Meghan Markle and their kids – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – over the last four years.

The insider said: “Faith has always been a part of Charles’s life and something he’s explored, but since becoming King it is playing a more central role…that reliance on faith and quiet contemplation has become a comfort and asset to him and helps him cope with the role as he adapts to being King.”
