Dr Punam said that the drink is a “healing hug in a mug”

A BBC Morning Live doctor is praising a drink she always makes to boost her health. Not only does it taste good, but the expert says it has “healing powers” that help to boost your immune system.

With cold and flus rife at this time of year, Dr Punam Krishan, a GP based in Glasgow, Scotland, says it’s the perfect time to have a sip. Her “mum’s trusted golden milk” is “literally a healing hug in a mug”, she said.

Revealing how to make it, the recipe of which you can see below, she says you can use any milk but she uses cow’s milk. Talking about the ingredients, she says they all have “healing properties” that are great for when you are feeling run down.

She said: “My mum used to give us this drink throughout winter to nourish our immune systems and we always took it whenever we were poorly. Haldi Doodh (golden milk) is super easy to make and if you like those wholesome Indian chai flavours, you will love this.”

Dr Punam’s ‘golden milk’ – full recipe

The recipe is for one cup. She says: “My kids love this, I lobve this. Genuinely, it taste divine.”

Ingredients for 1 cup

Cardamom 2-3 de-shelled
Pinch of aniseed
Some ginger (can use ground ginger if you don’t have fresh)
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
Pinch of cinnamon
Tablespoon of honey
Touch of black pepper to season at end

Method

Grind your cardamom pods and aniseed and add to your milk of choice

 

Add in ginger

 

Let it come to simmer

 

Add in your turmeric, cinnamon and honey

 

Bring it to a boil and let it bubble away for a couple of mins after to let the flavours of the spices blend in

 

Sieve and sprinkle some black pepper and cinnamon on top

Health benefits of dairy

The NHS is a fan of dairy, judging by their website. They say: “Milk and dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, are great sources of protein and calcium. They can form part of a healthy, balanced diet.

“Unsweetened calcium-fortified dairy alternatives, made from plants like soya, coconuts or oats, also count as part of this food group. These can make good alternatives to dairy products.

“To make healthier choices, go for lower fat and lower sugar options.” Specifically on milk, they advise: “You can give children pasteurised whole or semi-skimmed cows’ milk, or goats’ or sheep’s milk, as a main drink from the age of 1.

“For older children and adults, it’s a good idea to go for lower-fat milks because having too much saturated fat in your diet can lead to high cholesterol.

“If you’re trying to cut down on fat, try swapping to 1% fat or skimmed milk, as these still contain the important nutritional benefits of milk, but are lower in fat.

“It’s ok to use 1% fat or skimmed milk when cooking for children over the age of 12 months. But do not give them as a main drink to children under the age of 5.”

James Martin was left giggling on his ITV show as he revealed that he was recently told that he doesn’t look as ‘fat’ in real life as he does on TV.

James Martin got candid about his weight struggles, sharing that he’s been called ‘fat’ on the telly. In a recent instalment of his popular ITV programme, the 52 year old chef was joined by actor James Buckley and his spouse Clair Meek, who are known for their podcast In Sickness and in Health, to sample some of Martin’s signature dishes.

The show featured Martin whipping up blackened rice with squid, a dish that marries squid ink-flavoured rice with soft squid, hidden garlic butter, all encased in a crunchy breadcrumb coating, and served alongside a roasted red pepper sauce with a touch of creme fraiche.

While preparing the sauce, Martin quipped: “So a classic little sauce. You blend it till it is really pura but I like to leave it like that.”

He then humorously related the sauce’s texture to his own physique, confessing: “The way people describe me.. Chunky. I got told the other day, ‘You don’t look as fat as you do on TV.’” The remark sparked laughter as admitted his initial instinct was to think: “Oh, that’s quite nice.” He added: “I did try to find the complement but, you know.”

Martin has also opened up about his battle with keeping a healthy diet amidst his work schedule, despite shedding an impressive three stone. The chef acknowledged his past habit of eating on the run during busy late-night shifts, often resorting to “stuffing his face” with “really bad things” like takeaway pizza or chocolate bars, reports the Express.

However, his stint on the BBC’s popular show Strictly Come Dancing in 2005 saw him shed weight from 17st to 14st.

This triggered a significant lifestyle transformation for him, leading to a radical overhaul of his diet and a commitment to regular exercise at his home gym and walking, often clocking up between 20,000 to 30,000 steps daily.

In a chat with the Leicester Mercury, James shared: “Everything’s a balance – certainly as you get older with your diet. You get to 52 and you’re working in the kitchen, you run around the kitchen, [but] you’re not 22 anymore.

“Your brain might be telling you to keep going, but your legs are saying something different.

As for his current diet and his fondness for cheese, James believes in finding “there’s a happy medium”.

Curtis Pritchard is back in the Love Island villa looking for a new romance after his relationship with Maura Higgins failed to go the distance – and it seems they are now not close at all

Curtis Pritchard has claimed his Love Island ex Maura Higgins has a tendency to blank him – and has said they are not friends.

The 28-year-old dancer is back in the villa for season two of Love Island: All Stars which kicked off on ITV2 on Monday night. He was last on Love Island back in 2019 during season five of the show.

When he was last in the villa, Curtis matched initially with Amy Hart – before he fell for Irish bombshell Maura, 34, and they embarked on a romance that lasted outside of the show. However, a few short months after Curtis and Maura tried to maintain their romance, the love fizzled out and they broke up.

Back for a second attempt to find a love that lasts, Curtis reflected on his first stint in the villa in VT that aired at the beginning of the new season. Initially he reflected on an argument he had with Amy over coffee during their doomed in-villa romance before shifting his memory to his time with Maura.

He recalled: “Me and Maura ended up at the end together and… erm.. and yeah, that didn’t work out, clearly.” Then sharing his shock bombshell, he continued: “I’ve seen her a couple of times and said, ‘Hello.’ And she’s just completely blanked me, but…

“Erm… so I would say perhaps not best friends. Or friends. At all. But, erm…” He then shrugged and looked uncomfortable as he sat in the confessional chair during his VT.

The confession could rattle Maura – who is said to be nervous that Curtis could air their dirty laundry during his time on the show. And it could all come back at a bad time for Maura – who is enjoying the warm sparks of a blossoming romance with Towie star Pete Wicks.

A source told The Sun prior to the new season beginning: “Curtis signing for All Stars is more than awkward for Maura just as she’s fallen for Pete and they’ve finally gone public with their love. Her break-up with Curtis wasn’t the best and Maura always worried he’d be the ex that could blab. It’s also less than ideal when she’s hoping to build on her I’m A Celebrity profile and advance her career.”

The source added: “Love Island bosses are in the process of confirming the Islanders who will launch January’s show and Curtis might not make that line-up — but he is in the cast of bombshells to land later in the series.” The Mirror contacted a spokesperson for comment.

In the run down to the new season of All Stars beginning, Maura revealed she was feeling at her best as she popped to the salon for a makeover. Taking to Instagram, she revealed she had a booking with her favourite hair stylist.

And images on her main grid showed her sitting down with a camera team to discuss business. She uploaded the snaps with a simple caption stating: “Pantone colour of the year” alongside a brown heart emoji and a bear emoji – while she posed in a luxurious, chocolate brown outfit.

A string of familiar faces have returned to the Love Island villa for a second chance at romance – and the first couples of the season have been unvieled.

Maya Jama is back in South Africa to preside over the action from the villa in the second season of spin-off show Love Island: All Stars – which sees past contestants return in the hope of sparking a relationship that can last for good. Past hopefuls from seasons two until 11 have returned hoping they can unlock love a second time around – and not get pied off.

Things have been slightly awkward, however, as Gabby Allen and Marcel Somerville have both returned to the villa. Fans will recall that they both appeared in season three of the main Love island show in 2017 – and that they dated in the villa.

And it appears love could be set to go through the gauntlet for the pair again – as they are one of the first couplings of the 2025 All Stars season. Show host Maya highlighted the fact that the pair have history – asking at the fire pit: “You ok Gabby?”

The 32-year-old replied: “Yeah, I’m great. It’s fine, it was a long time ago… I just haven’t seen him since.” Prompting Maya to then ask: “Gabby, did you expect to see your ex on All Stars?”

Gabby then replied: “No… [it’s been] six years!” While Marcel, 39, added: “Crazy things happened, but I do feel like afterwards we did speak and get to an amicable place. I haven’t got bad blood for Gabby. The universe has a funny way of bringing you back to things.”

The other couplings were between untested duos – with season four contestant Kaz Crossley matching with season five favourite Curtis Pritchard. India Reynolds, who was also in season five, was paired with iconic season two contestant Scott Thomas.

Catherine Agbaje, who Love Island fans will recall from season 10, was matched with Nas Majeed – who was in the cast of season six in 2020. While season nine’s Olivia Hawkins was matched with fan favourite Luca Bish – who appeared in season eight of the series and famously matched with Gemma Owen, only for their romance to collapse once they were away from the villa.

The final couple for the second season of Love Island: All Stars was Elma Pazar and Ronnie Vint – who previously appeared in seasons five and 11 respectively.

During the course of the opening episode, viewers watched Marcel and Gabby catch up after they entered the villa. Taking her to one side, Marcel asked Gabs: “Are you OK?” before they embraced in a hug.

Gabby admitted: “I have mixed feelings about you. It’s nice to see you, but I also think you’re a kn*b. Do you know what I mean?” And Marcel replied: “We both just lived since innit… it’s bringing back that past.” Gabby then said: “It feels weird. When you actually think about what happened, Marce, what the f***?”

Shelley King, who has played Yasmeen Nazir on Coronation Street since 2014 – has sensationally quit the long-running ITV soap after a number of other high-profile stars also walked away

Coronation Street star Shelley King has quit the soap after playing Yasmeen Nazir for an impressive 11 years.

Shelley, 69, first appeared on the cobbles in her role as Yasmeen back in 2014 but will exit Weatherfield later this year. It is believed she has already finished her filming and she will disappear from the soap after her final scenes have aired in March.

Shelley’s exit is the latest in a string of high-profile cast members who have exited Coronation Street amid reports the soap is struggling to work with its budget. Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, and Colson Smith, who has plays Craig Tinker, and others that are due to exit the soap in 2025.

There are fears soap fans will take the news of Shelley’s exit badly as she is something of a fan favourite due to her work as Yasmeen. However, there are hopes the star will now be free to appear in other projects now that she will be out of the rigorous filming schedule of the ITV show.

A source told The Sun: “This will be another blow for fans of the show, as Yasmeen is a much-loved character who’s part of the fabric of Corrie. She’s had some huge storylines since she joined the soap in 2014, and she’ll be sorely missed by cast and crew. It’s understood she is leaving so she can explore other projects.” The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment.

Earlier this month reports emerged to claim the ITV soap is “on it’s knees” and struggling to fund the show. Fan favourite characters are reportedly being axed in the hope of securing new talent and relying on younger cast who cost less to involve in the show.

Cast are reportedly unhappy with the behind-the-scenes changes, however, with the Daily Mail reporting last week: “In years gone by, stars would receive a standard fee per episode, which meant for major characters, they could rack up a very lucrative pay cheque. ”

It is expected that scenes in the Rovers Return can no longer be afforded to be stuffed with characters from the famous fictional street as the actors would need paid a fee even if they had just one line. A source previously told The Sun: “The cast loved the days when lots of scenes were filmed in the Rovers because it didn’t matter if you had 10 scenes in an episode or just sat in the pub – you’d get paid the same.

“Playing a barmaid or the landlord was a dream gig and would guarantee you got paid a fortune because it didn’t matter if you just served someone in the background – you got paid for the episode.” Fans have already noticed that major characters have been appearing far less in recent months.

Helen Worth, who played Gail Platt for 50 years and exited the show on Christmas Day 2024, featured in just 26 out of 304 episodes before her exit – while Mike Le Vell, who plays Kevin Webster, only appeared in 46 despite being part of a major cancer scare storyline.

Sally Ann Matthews, who has played Jenny Bradley since 1986, vented her frustration about her time on the show online recently. Revealing she took a last minute holiday last year, she explained: “I chose to get on an aeroplane because I’m particularly quiet at work. I’ve got, like, a million years off. So, I chose to go on an aeroplane and I chose to remember happier times.”

However, fans soon took to social media to point out how Dermot looked ‘bored’ by his latest guest, with the presenter stretching and sighing throughout the chat. The Only Way Is Essex star Ferne is just one of the stars taking part in the 2025 series of Dancing on Ice, having performed her first skate on Sunday. The TV personality skated to Lily Allen’s Somewhere Only We Know and placed third on the leader board with a score of 26.5, not far behind Coronation Street’s Sam Aston and TV presenter Michaela Strachan.

Speaking on This Morning about signing up for Dancing on Ice, Ferne said: “It was the perfect time with finishing my reality show at the end of the year last year and just to go onto such a fantastic production. It’s such a fantastic show, it’s magical.

“It’s because you’re constantly squatting and bending down the whole time on your bent knees, so it’s been amazing exercise. I’ve just got fitter and more supple, the more training I’ve done.”

Meanwhile, former winner James Jordan revealed that he worried for Ferne due to her height. “It would be great to have a really strong female. I was thinking about Ferne McCann. She’s only 34 but she’s very tall and I worry that she’s going to struggle,” he told The Mirror.

Heartbroken Loose Women star Charlene White has taken to social media to share her shock at the pay of some fire-fighters in LA.

As death toll from the California wildfires rises to 24, she shared a video of the ‘incarcerated fire fighters battling the LA fires’ where the brave servicemen are risking their lives. Charlene has been doing some research and was stunned to see many of those on the frontline are actually prisoners.

Posting on Instagram, the ITV star wrote: “Most enlightening fact I’ve learned this morning. Each year up to 30% of California wildfire-fighters are prisoners. Almost a thousand of whom have been fighting the current devastating fires… earning as little as £22.10 for a 24-hour shift.”

Many celebrities homes have been burned downed in the LA wildfires with Paris Hilton and Anthony Hopkins some of those to have suffered. Mark Hamill, the 73-year-old Star Wars, icon confirmed last week that he has evacuated his Malibu home with his wife and their dog.

Hollywood icon Mel Gibson’s house burned down while he was blasting the California governor. But when Mel, 69, was recording the podcast, the fires tore down his mansion in Malibu. Shocking photographs show the site reduced to rubble, scenes said to have “devastated” the actor and filmmaker.

Speaking amid the aftermath, Gibson told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports: “When I got home, sure enough, it wasn’t there. I had never seen such a complete burn. It is obviously devastating, it’s emotional. I lived there for about 15 years so it was home to me.

“There was nothing left but a chimney and a few roof tiles, and you dare not walk around for the nails and the whole deal. The vehicles were gone, everything.”

Mel, who won two Oscars for his work on Braveheart in 1996, had ripped into the California governor on Rogan’s podcast saying he felt Newsom did not follow through on things he said he would do to help prevent wildfires when he first took office six years ago.

“In 2019, I think Newsom said, ‘I’m going to take care of the forest and maintain the forest’ and do all that kind of stuff. I think all our tax dollars probably went for Gavin’s hair gel. It’s sad. The place is just on fire,” Gibson, known for his action hero roles, said during his chat with 57-year-old comedian Joe Rogan.

“Unfortunately, we’re going right back into red flag conditions with some potential disastrous wind conditions between now and Wednesday, with the peak winds expected to be on Tuesday,” Pasadena fire chief Chad Augustin told the BBC. “While we’re making some progress, the end is not even close yet,” he said.

Brenda Edwards was left speechless on Loose Women when her co-star Linda Robson made a shockingly crude comment that stopped the show in its tracks.

The panel, which included I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! alum Jane Moore, Janet Street-Porter, Brenda, and Linda, were in the midst of a discussion about hair loss when the incident occurred.

During the episode broadcast on Monday (January 13), Janet disgusted viewers by admitting she only washed her hair once during “three weeks over Christmas “, attributing it to a health issue that caused her hair to thin, leading her to be more careful with how often she washes it.

Brenda chimed in, relating to the topic with her own experience of needing to take extra care of her Afro-hair, particularly after suffering from alopecia due to stress following her grandmother’s death.

Liverpool Echo reports the tone of the conversation took a different turn when Linda shared her thoughts on hair loss, saying: “It all depends if I’m going somewhere then I wash my hair and do it.”

Linda left the entire panel a-gasp with her remarkBrenda was practically incapacitated with laughter, hunched over the desk, inadvertently disrupting Jane’s efforts to maintain order with her bouts of mirth. Even as Jane pressed on, declaring: “Brenda’s completely gone, so I’m going to come to you first Linda.”

Her chuckles morphed into tearful giggles. Reaching for a tissue to dab away tears proved fruitless for the TV personality, who was utterly stricken with hilarity, leaving her in uncontrollable laughter as the show concluded.

Dancing On Ice returned to ITV this evening with a moving tribute to former contestant The Vivienne after the RuPaul’s Drag Race star’s sudden death earlier this month

Dancing On Ice kicked off its 2025 series with a moving tribute to former celebrity contestant The Vivienne.

The first RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner’s death at the age of 32 was announced by the publicist earlier this month, with tribute pouring in from across the world for the trailblazing star. The Vivienne, born James Lee Williams, made history in 2023 as the first drag queen to compete on the ITV series.

They were partnered with Colin Grafton during their time on the show and finished in third place. In the wake of The Vivienne’s passing, Colin paid tribute to his late skating partner, saying: “They truly brought light into every room they entered and gave so many people hope where there was none.”

As the show returned for a new series this evening, hosts Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern paid tribute to The Vivienne. As the 2025 cast was introduced to viewers, Holly paused the show to share the touching statement. “Before we move on, like us, many of you have been saddened by the tragedy of The Vivienne’s passing last weekend,” Holly began telling ITV viewers.

“Now, they were a huge part of the show, making it all the way to the final in 2023 and they’ll be very sorely missed, the former This Morning presenter continued. “Our thoughts are with The Vivienne’s loved ones at this sad time. So sad.”

“Absolutely,” Stephen agreed, before changing tone to say: “Ok, tonight’s we’ll see our first six couples take to the ice – the other six couples will perform next week – so lets crack on with the very first celebrity.” Viewers were left divided by the brief tribute, with many on social media admitting they expected more.

Earlier this week, the Mirror exclusively revealed that Dancing On Ice would dedicate an emotional tribute to The Vivienne’s memory. A source said: “The Dancing on Ice team has been rocked by the sad news. The Vivienne was a much loved contestant during their time on the show and broke ground by being the first drag artist to compete. There will be a tribute on Sundays launch, everyone’s in agreement that it’s only right to pay respects. It’s a tragic loss. Everyone working close to the show’s thoughts go out to the Vivienne’s family and friends.”

The Vivienne, who was born in Wales, adopted the drag name as they were known for wearing Vivienne Westwood clothing. They performed as the wicked witch of the west in a UK and Ireland tour of The Wizard Of Oz musical and reprised the role in the West End at the Gillian Lynne Theatre last year. They were due to be back on tour next month performing in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang musical in the role of The Childcatcher.

Colin concluded with: “I will always be so proud of what we accomplished. Viv, your spirit, strength, and kindness will always stay with me and with everyone you touched. I will forever cherish our time together on and off the ice , you will forever be my Mary Poppins. I promise to carry your memory with me in everything I do. You taught me so much about so many things, and I am eternally grateful. Your legacy lives on.”

Dancing On Ice judge Oti Mabuse has remembered The Vivienne for being a “phenomenal entertainer” and “trailblazer”. Oti said “some news hits you harder than others and stops you in your tracks” after news of the death was announced. “I absolutely loved the viv,” the former Strictly Come Dancing star wrote alongside a picture of the pair on Instagram. “A beautiful human being, funny, kind, a trailblazer, creative and so warm. You were such an asset on Dancing On Ice , one of the greatest on Drag Race and just a phenomenal entertainer on screen and theatre.”
