James Gunn’s extreme measures for his DCU team should be a wake-up call for Kevin Feige

Kevin Feige’s Spider-Man 4 has lots of discussion ongoing, even before a script is ready for the film

James Gunn has been active on social media, posting regular updates about the DCU. He recently announced the beginning of filming of Superman and the casting of Milly Alcock as Supergirl. Besides the Superman and Supergirl films, one other project that audiences expect an update on is the announced The Authority project. When a fan asked about the casting of the film, Gunn had a perfect response that Kevin Feige should take note for the MCU.

Gunn shared that the casting wouldn’t be announced unless the film has a finished script. Gunn shared that DCU prioritized quality first over other things. Meanwhile, the MCU is struggling to fix a script, director, or start date for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4.

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn says DCU prioritizes quality over everything else

James Gunn‘s Superman is currently filming and other projects like Creature Commandos and Waller will reach the audience before the David Corenswet-led film. The script work for Supergirl is currently underway and the writer of the film, Ana Nogueira, is also tasked with the script of the newly announced Teen Titans movie.

However, one of the DCU’s initially announced projects, The Authority, has yet to receive a major update, including the cast of the film. One member of The Authority team, Angela Spica aka the Engineer, will appear in Gunn’s Superman film. María Gabriela de Faría was cast in the role, making her the only announced casting in The Authority.

One fan asked the Guardians of the Galaxy director about the casting of the rest of the members of The Authority. Gunn replied that The Authority film has yet to receive a finished script. The production of the film and the casting will kick off only after the script gets greenlit. Gunn also added that it was the reason why some DCU projects were moving faster than others from their originally announced slate.

Gunn also threw a subtle shade at Kevin Feige’s MCU when he suggested that it was always going to be quality first for the DCU. The Suicide Squad director may have been hinting at Marvel Studios scrambling for a director for Spider-Man 4 when they couldn’t even agree upon a script for the film with Sony. Gunn shared via Threads:

“We won’t green light a film until we have a finished script we’re happy with and in general, we won’t cast a film until the script is finished. This is why some projects are moving faster than anticipated and others more slowly. It’s always gonna be quality first no matter what”

Earlier, it was rumored that Argylle director Matthew Vaughn will helm the film for the DCU. Vaughn reportedly dropped out from directing the next iteration of the James Bond films to join Gunn’s DCU.

Kevin Feige’s Spider-Man 4 Production Is Troubled

Kevin Feige could use James Gunn’s lesson for his Spider-Man 4

Kevin Feige could use a lesson or two from James Gunn’s DCU, especially when it comes to the ‘quality first’ aspect. While other films in the MCU have their fair share of issues, one of the biggest headaches for the studio currently is their joint venture with Sony, Spider-Man 4. A script for the project is still in development, with both the MCU and SSU entering a tug-of-war regarding the setting of the film.

Jon Watts, the director of the earlier three films, has no part in this drama as he departed from the Spider-Man films last year. Other directors are considered for the film, which has no script or start date in place. Drew Goddard and Justin Lin are the frontrunners for directing the film, while some rumors also suggest that Sony is trying to convince Jon Watts to return for the fourth film.

While The Authority and Spider-Man 4 await further updates, James Gunn’s Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, making it the first theatrical DCU film.
