It was poised to be the weekend Lando Norris finally put one hand on the World Drivers’ Championship trophy. Instead, the glitz and glamour of the Las Vegas Grand Prix descended into a midnight nightmare for McLaren, resulting in a catastrophic double disqualification that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 paddock and reignited a title battle that seemed all but over.
In the early hours of Monday morning, long after the champagne had dried and the fans had drifted away from the Strip, the FIA dropped a bombshell ruling. Both Lando Norris and his teammate Oscar Piastri were stripped of their race results due to technical infringements. The culprit? Excessive wear on the skid blocks—the wooden planks underneath the car that mandate ride height.

From Ecstasy to Agony
For Lando Norris, the emotional whiplash must be excruciating. Leaving the track, he held a commanding 42-point lead over Max Verstappen with just two races remaining. His performance on the streets of Vegas had been masterful, and with Piastri’s form acting as a perfect rear-gunner, the Constructor’s and Driver’s titles looked destined for Woking.
But the “Formula 1 Gods,” as they say, were not finished with the script. The post-race technical inspection revealed that the skid blocks on both MCL38s were below the minimum required thickness. In F1, this is a slam-dunk penalty. There is no grey area. If the plank is worn down beyond the limit, you are out.
“It’s a crash back to earth,” an insider commented. “Norris went from feeling on top of the world to discovering his title charge is suddenly in mortal danger.”
The Sparks That Told a Story
Retrospectively, the signs were there for all to see. Throughout the 50-lap race, both McLaren cars were emitting spectacular showers of sparks, particularly down the colossal Las Vegas Strip straight. While visually stunning for the fans, for engineers, it was a warning sign: the cars were running too low.
McLaren has since issued a statement attributing the issue to an unexpected return of “porpoising”—the aerodynamic bouncing phenomenon that plagued teams in previous seasons. The team suggested that setup changes intended to combat tire graining, combined with a lack of dry practice running due to bad weather, led them to an aerodynamic configuration that forced the cars into the ground more aggressively than predicted.
“We are investigating the reasons for this behavior,” the team stated, noting that the breach was unintentional. However, in a sport measured by millimeters, intentions account for little against the rulebook.

Did Rivals Blow the Whistle?
The most sensational twist in this saga, however, isn’t just the mechanical failure—it’s the rumor mill grinding into overdrive regarding how the FIA caught wind of the issue so quickly.
Whispers from the paddock suggest that rival teams may have tipped off the governing body. Following the Brazilian Grand Prix, speculation was rife about teams using “heat-expanding titanium skid plates” to artificially protect the wooden plank from wearing down, allowing them to run cars illegally low for better performance.
While there is no confirmation that McLaren was using such a device, the heightened scrutiny on ride heights meant the FIA was watching closely. The excessive sparking in Vegas likely acted as a beacon, inviting the technical delegates to take a closer look. If rivals did indeed lobby for a stricter check, their gamesmanship has paid off in spectacular fashion.
The Title Fight is Back On
The consequences of this double DQ cannot be overstated. Norris’s comfortable cushion has evaporated. His lead over Verstappen has plummeted to just 24 points. With two races and a Sprint still to go, the momentum has swung violently.
Max Verstappen, who looked resigned to losing his crown just 24 hours ago, has been gifted a lifeline. The Dutchman is now technically level on points with Piastri (though behind on countback) and is breathing down Norris’s neck. Psychologically, the pressure has shifted entirely to the Briton. Verstappen has nothing to lose and everything to gain, a dangerous position for a driver of his caliber.
“Max will feel like he can win from this position,” analysts predict. “He knows that all he has to do is go out and perform. The pressure is all on Lando now.”

A Nervous Finale in Qatar
As the circus packs up and heads to Qatar for the penultimate round, the atmosphere within McLaren will be tense. They have committed an “astronomical” error at the most critical moment of the season. To throw away a near-guaranteed championship with a technical oversight is the stuff of nightmares for a racing team.
Norris must now regroup. He needs to navigate the high-speed curbs of Lusail without letting the ghosts of Vegas haunt his driving. If he crumbles, Verstappen is ready to pounce. The 2025 season was supposed to be winding down; instead, it has just exploded into life.
Buckle up. The final lap of this championship is going to be a wild ride.
