Super Bowl LVIII was filled with viral moments, from Reba McEntire’s emotional rendition of the National Anthem to Usher’s epic halftime performance to Taylor Swift chugging a beer in the stands to the Kansas City Chiefs’ exciting overtime win. But few were as jaw-dropping as Travis Kelce’s interaction with head coach Andy Reid. The moment shocked fans and immediately received the meme treatment on social media.

The intense moment happened during the second quarter of the game, when Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco fumbled the ball while going in to score. Travis, who was on the sidelines during the play, was caught on camera bumping into his coach and screaming in his face.

Travis initially laughed off the exchange after the game, saying he was just telling his coach how much he loves him. But during the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis’s older brother Jason held him accountable for the interaction.

Jason said, “I think we can both agree you were out of line,” and Travis said, “I can’t get that fired up where I’m bumping into Coach Reid and catching him off balance.” Jason continued, calling the interaction “unacceptable.” He said, “Let’s be honest, the yelling in his face is out of line. I think there’s better ways to handle this.”

Jason explained that he has been involved in similar interactions on the football field. He said, “We both know that one of our weaknesses is our emotions, and one of our strengths is our emotions. One of our downsides is that we’re not great at controlling our emotions, and I wish we were better at it.”

Travis explained, “It’s definitely unacceptable and I wish I could’ve took it back.” He continued, “Sometimes the emotions get the best of me…Sometimes my passion comes out in a way of negativity, but I’m glad [Coach Reid] knows that I just wanted to win this thing.”

As for Coach Reid, he was not bothered by the interaction. The Chiefs coach previously told reporters, “The part I love is [Travis] loves to play the game, and he wants to help his team win. It’s not a selfish thing, that’s not what it is, and I understand that. And so as much as, you know, he bumps into me, I get after him. And we understand that. He just caught me off balance.”

Travis said, “I love Coach Reid, Coach Reid knows how much I love to play for him, how much I love to be a product of his coaching career. I’m not playing for anybody else but Big Red. If he calls it quits this year I’m out of there with him, man.”

Both Coach Reid and Travis have said that they’ll be back with the Chiefs to defend their Super Bowl title next year.
