Duchess Sophie cannot contain her delight as Team GB win first Gold Medal in the velodrome

Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh was thrilled to see Team GB triumph in the Women’s Team Sprint.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh was snapped cheering on Team GB at the Olympic Games 2024 on Monday evening as they won their first cycling medal in the velodrome, scooping gold in the Women’s Team Sprint.

The team also set a new world record in Track Cycling as Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell, and Katy Marchant beat New Zealand into second place.

This is the first time Team GB has won a women’s sprint medal of any colour at the Olympics, with Ms Marchant telling BBC Sport: “To break three world records and come away as Olympic champions, we just absolutely nailed it and I’m so proud of us.”

No doubt the Duchess was proud too, as she arrived in Paris to represent the Royal Family, following in Princess Anne’s footsteps as she travelled to the French capital earlier in the tournament.

Sophie was all smiles on Sunday too as she arrived to watch the Men’s Hockey quarter final, but it was the female cyclists who gave her the opportunity to let loose and celebrate.

Duchess Sophie cheers and goes to hug man

Duchess Sophie travelled to Paris to watch Team GB win their first cycling medal in the velodrome on Day 10 of the Olympic Games 2024.

Their impressive gold medal-winning display led to cheers in the crowd, in particular from Sophie and her companion.

Team GB’s hopes for further golden glory are set to continue throughout this week until the Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

Duchess Sophie cheers with arms in the air

The Duchess of Edinburgh appeared without her husband Prince Edward and their two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex.

But that did not stop her fully embracing the sporting spirit and getting swept away in Team GB’s victory.

The royals are known to be a sporting family, with Sophie’s daughter Louise an accomplished carriage driver regularly competing in races.

Sophie cheers and claps

The excitement of the event was clear from Sophie’s expressions, as she could have been any enthusiastic member of the public cheering on her team.

The Duchess was dressed for the summery weather in her Erdem Roisin floral-print midi frock, on sale for £1200 ($1535), although she has worn it before.

She teamed the dress with Mary Jane leather espadrilles in White from Penelope Chilvers.

Sophie and friend smile looking at phone

Sophie and her male companion were happily interacting with other members of the crowd in the velodrome, as they smiled to admire something on another person’s phone.

Perhaps it was photos or videos of the cycling event keeping them entertained.

The Duchess seemed keen to blend in with other attendees, keeping the focus on the extraordinarily skilled athletes and the thrill of the sprint.

Sophie stands and claps

It was not just the cycling that Sophie went to watch, as on Sunday she was spotted at the Men’s Hockey quarter final to see Team GB face India. However, the opposing team was victorious.

She also visited the Women’s Hub before their hockey match against the Netherlands, but they too missed out.

This did not seem to quell Sophie’s enthusiasm though as she looked fresh and cool in a white linen dress.
