Bake Off’s Prue Leith shares health struggles with heartbreaking confession

Prue Leith joined the Loose Women panel to discuss getting older and confessed to what she struggled with at the age of 84

Prue Leith made a candid health confession as she admitted she is “conscious it’s nearly the end”.

The veteran Bake Off host was appearing on Tuesday’s edition of ITV’s Loose Women when she spoke to the presenters. Prue, 84, and the panel were discussing what the best thing about getting older is. However, she bluntly said: “Well, I think old age stinks.”

As the audience and panel gasped and asked why, she added: “It takes me 10 minutes to get myself out of bed in the morning. If I don’t do the exercises I can’t move. There’s all sorts of things that are wrong with old age.

“You know, you are very conscious that this is nearly the end, though I agree that you then decide that you’re going to make the most of it and have fun. I think what we’re all saying is that we don’t care what people think as much as we did and to be honest I don’t even really care if I’m cancelled.”

She then shrugged her shoulders and chuckled as she said: “So what?” Janet Street Porter then agreed with her and added her thoughts.

The admission comes months after she had previously revealed she knows she is “so near the end”. Speaking at London Fashion Week in November last year, she said hitting her Eighties has given her a new sense of freedom.

She said at the time: “Because I’m so near the end, I’m a bit more reckless. Now, what’s the worst thing that can happen? If I was about to try and get a job on Bake Off, I probably wouldn’t walk down a catwalk in latex with goth makeup on, but now it’s too late. If I want to do it, and it sounds like good fun. I just think, why not?”

On her famously bright wardrobe on Channel 4, she added: “I don’t ever wear anything I don’t want to. My husband is a retired fashion designer, and he’s very keen on colour, so I listen to him a bit.”

Last year, she also admitted her “main concern” about ageing is “not having enough life left to live”, as she still has many ambitions to fulfil. In her 2022 memoir, I’ll Try Anything Once, author Dame Prue, 84, disclosed her desire to turn her trilogy of books into a TV series, and her aspiration to write a baking book inspired by her experiences on the Channel 4 show. But the reality of ageing has made her realise she needs to “better get a move on”.

Stacey expressed her excitement and nerves about the show, which will offer an intimate look at their life at Pickle Cottage, beyond what she shares on Instagram and is coming to the Beeb later this year.

Stacey wrote: “Now I can FINALLY tell you that we’d been busy filming for ‘Stacey and Joe’ coming to the BBC later this year. It’s been such a big part of our lives… I love sharing what we do on Instagram, but this is capturing the laughs, tears and the craziness at Pickle Cottage in such a different way. On the actual TV.”

She thanked her fans for their support, saying: “It still feels surreal and I’m so nervous about it, but all your lovely comments have made such a difference. I’ll share more about the show when I can [heart emoji]. There’s honestly not a day that goes by that I’m not grateful for every single one of you… You’re just the best mates I could ever ask for. Giovanna Fletcher, who celebrates her 40th birthday today, has candidly discussed the challenges in her marriage with husband Tom Fletcher.

Appearing on Caroline Hirons’ podcast Glad We Had This Chat, she offered a new perspective on her relationship with the McFly singer.

A listener had written in confessing that their ‘demanding jobs’ were causing a strain in their relationship. Giovanna empathised, saying: “That’s really hard isn’t it. I can relate, I feel with Tom if we can manage to watch something together and our feet touch, that’s a win.”

She continued: “I also think being aware that you’re so busy that you’re juggling, that you’re drifting is really really important, because then you can do something about it. I think not being aware of it is the difficult place to be.”

Giovanna passionately emphasised the importance of not comparing one’s relationship to others.

She said: “I think it’s so easy to look at other couples out there, whether that’s your mates, or online and go ‘oh my gosh they’ve got it sorted’. It’s all b******s, total total rubbish.”

Giovanna and Tom first crossed paths as children at the Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was just 13 years old. They exchanged vows in 2012 and have since welcomed three children; Buzz, Buddy and Max.

In recent years, Giovanna has made a name for herself in the podcasting world, hosting conversations about motherhood on her Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast. She’s had a host of famous guests, with perhaps the most notable being Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, who joined her for a chat five years ago.

And, chatting on the Invite Only podcast last year, Giovanna shared some warm words about the 43-year-old, saying: “She’s just brilliant. From the first time I met her to now, I’m still blown away by her ability to connect with everyone.”

Before launching her own podcast, Giovanna also made several TV appearances, most notably winning ITV’s I’m A Celeb, where she beat radio presenter Jordan North to be crowned Queen of the Jungle. She has also been seen on shows like Loose Women and Lorraine.

TV star Charlene White has shared a heartfelt tribute to her dear friend following his passing, in a heartbreaking post.

The Loose Women presenter, 44, posted pictures of herself alongside her friend Darrell, who she calls her brother, on social media. Charlene said her heart is “broken into a million pieces” as she announced Darrell, also known as DJ Optic, passed away after a Sarcoma cancer diagnosis. A sarcoma is a rare type of malignant (cancerous) tumour that develops in bone and connective tissue, such as fat, muscle, blood vessels, nerves and the tissue that surrounds bones and joints.

Charlene penned: “There will be many of you who will aware of me talking about one of my oldest and best friends Darrell @djoptic and his mission to beat the enemy which is Sarcoma cancer. In the early hours of Saturday morning, four and a half years after he was diagnosed, after a week of saying goodbyes to those he loved, sharing stories and banter, he took his final breath surrounded by his wonderful wife @mrsamymcdonald and children Maya and Theo.”

The TV personality went on to say: “He has been my brother since we met at 16 years old, I was the best man at his wedding, and god-mother to his eldest. The nonsense our little crew would get up to was hilarious back in the day, he was there for every milestone. My heart is broken into a million pieces.”

“He was by far one of the kindest men I’ve ever met, and throughout his treatment he made it his mission to shine a light on Sarcoma alongside @sarcoma_uk in the hope no other family had to go through what he and his family went through: raising awareness, raising money, educating doctors. He was quite simply, amazing.”

Charlene commended her close pal’s wife Amy and also mentioned she’d be returning to work as she “didn’t know what else to do.” Charlene concluded her message by saying: “Grief can sometimes just make you feel a little lost. Message your besties and let them know how much they are loved.”Her Loose Women colleague, Ruth Langsford, responded with: “I’m so sorry Charlene. Grief is sadly the price we pay for loss. You know you will be held and supported by everyone @loosewomen My condolences to Darrell’s family and sending you a massive hug.” Coleen Nolan, who’s sister Linda Nolan recently passed away, also expressed her condolences, stating: “So deeply sorry Charlene for the loss of your friend… thinking of you and sending a big hug.” Katie Piper also sent her support, simply saying: “Sending you love.”

Loose Women star Linda Robson was left in tears and unable to speak as she appeared on the show to discuss pal Pauline Quirke’s dementia diagnosis

Linda Robson was left in tears as she spoke about friend Pauline Quirke’s dementia diagnosis for the first time.

The Loose Women star spoke of her Birds of a Feather co-star while on the show and struggled to contain her emotions. Host Christine Lampard told her: “Clearly, you are there for her and you have got a bit of experience too. You will lean on each other going forward. It is so good thank you have got each other. It is difficult, Linda, I know. Thank you for sharing.”

The support prompted Linda to break down as she was supported by the panelists. She was unable to say anything in response. “We are sending all our love to Pauline and her family,” Christine added. She then told Linda: “You take a little moment.”

Linda opened up on her friendship with Pauline, having met when they were 10-years-old. She said: “We were at the same primary school together and we did everything together. We travelled all over the world, we went to amazing places. Because of Birds of a Feather, it opened many doors.”

The TV star continued: “We just had such amazing times and she was an amazing actress as well. She has got the most beautiful family, a loving husband Steve who was the love of her life. Her kids as well, she has got two kids and granddaughters as well.” Linda added: “We sort of did everything the same. We were really naughty. We used our fame to get into so many different places.”

Last week, Quirke’s husband Steve Sheen said she will retire from “all professional and commercial duties” after a diagnosis in 2021. On Instagram, 66-year-old Loose Women star Robson wrote: “This will be the only time I speak on behalf of my best friend, Pauline. For the past three years, I’ve been in close contact with her husband, Steve, and have spent time with Pauline. It breaks my heart to see her endure such a terrible illness. Out of respect for her family and her privacy, I will not be discussing this matter further.”

She struggled to contain her emotions
Steve said in his own statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of Dementia in 2021.” It was revealed on Loose Women last week that Linda had known about Pauline’s diagnosis for “some time”.

As the devastating announcement was released, Linda was on a Caribbean cruise. She was near the island of Grenada and was unaware the statement was to be released, according to reports. Linda’s Loose Women co-star Ruth Langsford also addressed her being away as Pauline’s health battle was discussed by the panel on Tuesday’s show.

Ruth said: “Linda Robson, obviously great friends with Pauline, is actually away at the moment, otherwise she would have joined us today to talk about her friend. And obviously she has known for some time.” Linda and Pauline have been friends since childhood, but have faced feud rumours over the years.

Loose Women’s presenter Kaye Adams revealed her jumper was on back-to-front on Friday

Queen Camilla has taken time out of her busy schedule to make a surprise appearance at Wimbledon, after a morning filled with royal engagements. Camilla spent the morning bidding farewell to French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte as they made their way from Windsor to London to continue their three-day state visit.

Following the ceremonial farewell to the French leader, Camilla made her way to Buckingham Palace to attend a reception to celebrate 40 years of artists accompanying official overseas visits. King Charles and Queen Camilla viewed an exhibition featuring the work of 43 artists who have joined The King on 70 official visits across 95 countries and regions.

After the conclusion of the ceremony at the Palace, Camilla journeyed down to SW19 to sit back and enjoy an afternoon of tennis in the sunshine.

Accompanied by her sister Annabel Elliot, Camilla was introduced to key staff members as she arrived at Wimbledon, including Will Brierley, Lead Groundsperson, who has dedicated 20 years of service to the Club and is responsible for maintaining the Championship Courts.

She also met Lead Gardener Robin Murphy, who has recently celebrated 20 years of service and has worked tirelessly to maintain the more than 50,000 plants during the recent hot weather; and Malin Lundin, Collections Manager, who has been instrumental in bringing Wimbledon’s rich history to life through displays that welcome both players and guests to the iconic courts.

Before heading to Centre Court to soak up the action of the men’s quarter finals, Camilla met with Serbian tennis champion Novak Djokovic, who will face Italian player Flavio Cobolli in his next match.

Camilla shook Djokovic’s hand as she remarked: “Oh what a treat, how nice to see you. It’s lovely to see you,” before saying she had her “fingers crossed” for him in the showdown match, to which he responded: “It will be my great honour. I appreciate it.”

Queen Camilla also met American tennis star Billie Jean King before entering Centre Court, as she told the former tennis player: “It’s very nice to see you still going strong.” King replied: “You are too,” to which Camilla then joked: “We try, don’t we.” King added: “Thank you for being here. It means a lot to us.”

Camilla’s appearance at Wimbledon comes after several days of many royal engagements. On Tuesday, King Charles and Queen Camilla welcomed French president Emmanuel Macron to the UK as they arrived for their three-day state visit.

After taking part in an official welcome ceremony outside Windsor Castle, the King and Queen joined the French leader and his wife to view the Royal Collection in the Drawing Room.

The first day of the French state visit culminated in a grand state banquet at Windsor Castle, which saw over 160 guests arrive for a white tie dinner.

Queen Camilla wore an ivory silk and crepe evening gown by Fiona Clare and a diamond and sapphire tiara that belonged to the late Queen for the glitzy event. She also wore the Legion d’Honeur French sash, Garter Star and the King’s family order.

Princess Kate revealed her “true feelings” towards King Charles through an unprecedented gesture. This week, she joined the Royal Family at a state banquet held in honour of French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte.

This marks her first full state visit since being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer last year. Now on the mend, Kate was present with the royals at Windsor Castle for the visit.

She had previously been absent from the Japanese state visit and only made a brief appearance at the Qatar visit. However, this week, Kate, resplendent in a Givenchy dress and the Lover’s Knot Tiara, accompanied Prince William to the dinner.

Speaking on the Palace Confidential podcast, Mail on Sunday Editor at Large Charlotte Griffiths described Kate as looking like a “Queen in waiting”. Reflecting on the Princess of Wales’s presence at the state banquet, she remarked: “It was a big, big deal.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen her in a tiara for nearly two years. She’s back on parade in a very, very formal capacity and she looked fantastic.

“It was so nice for everyone that loves Catherine around the world to see her back, leading the Royal Family and she is more empowered than ever. She really is starting to look regal and like a Queen in waiting.”

An accessory honouring Kate’s father-in-law, King Charles, has caught the eye of Royal commentators. Griffiths noted: “She also wore the Order of King Charles III, which is a small portrait of Charles that you wear on your left shoulder.

“This is the first time she has worn one of those, she has previously worn one for Queen Elizabeth II but this is the first time we have seen her wearing a portrait of her father-in-law on her left shoulder. It’s really, really sweet to see.”

The Royal Family Order is considered a token of appreciation from the monarch to female family members in recognition of their service to the Crown, a tradition believed to originate with King George IV in the 19th century.

The Order of King Charles made its first appearance in June 2024 and broke away from tradition by using polymin – a plastic material – instead of ivory for its backing.

King Charles chose a pale blue ribbon for his Royal Family Order, paying homage to his great-grandfather King George V. In contrast, the late Queen Elizabeth opted for a pale yellow ribbon, and her father, King George VI, selected pale pink.

Kate isn’t the only Royal recently seen sporting the portrait. Queen Camilla donned the accessory during last year’s state visit from Japan.

She was also observed wearing the Royal Order during President Macron’s visit. The portrait for the order was crafted by artist Elizabeth Meek, who admitted that creating it was “very stressful”.

The petite 4cm by 3cm portrait reportedly took over 100 hours to create, meticulously crafted under a magnifying glass before being set in a diamond-studded frame.

Speaking to The Times, the artist shared: “I did it in four weeks. My husband insisted I took a day off a week because I worked every day from morning till night. It was really stressful,”.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘relieved’ over royal move despite King’s new ‘snub’

When King Charles made his speech at the state banquet during the French visit to the UK, the monarch made a sweet reference to Prince William but not his estranged son Harry. Royal expert Jennie Bond believes there’s more to the story

    Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Royal expert Jennie Bond has broken down the real meaning behind King Charles’ supposed ‘snub’ of Prince Harry in his speech at the state banquet(Image: AP)

King Charles delivered a powerful message to his son Prince William at the state banquet on Tuesday, marking the end of the final day of the French state visit to the UK.

The banquet, which was attended by French president Emmanuel Macron, his wife Brigitte, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and hundreds of other guests, was held at Windsor Castle and saw the King give a moving speech about the royal family and their relationship with France.

During the address, the King spoke fondly about his eldest son Prince William, applauding his decision to establish his family home at Windsor, saying the move is doubly special given the castle’s Norman origins.

    King Charles during his speech
During King Charles’ speech at the state banquet, he made no mention of Prince Harry(Image: PA)

“The castle in which we meet this evening was begun by my ancestor — and your sometime countryman — William, Duke of Normandy, in the year 1070,” Charles said. “It remains the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.”

“So it is perhaps rather appropriate that my son, the Prince of Wales, who shares that earlier William’s name, has made Windsor his home with his family, like so many of our predecessors,” the Ling added.

Many royal fans were quick to point out that the address made no mention of his estranged son Prince Harry, who quit royal life in 2020 with his wife Meghan Markle, and permanently relocated to California.

While many thought the lack of mention of Harry was a deliberate ‘snub’ by King Charles, royal expert Jennie Bond has another theory. The former BBC royal correspondent said that the King’s speech was not out of the ordinary.

    Prince Harry, King Charles
Royal expert Jennie Bond believes the omittance wasn’t a “snub”, and simply relied on context(Image: POOL/AFP via Getty Images)

Jennie Bond told The Mirror: “I don’t think it is significant at all that there was no mention of Harry. It would have been very odd indeed for the King to have mentioned him during a State occasion which was all about Anglo French relations.”

Bond went on to clarify: “His reference to William was simply because of his name, the castle and its association with the Duke of Normandy. In no way was this any kind of snub.

When asked if the Sussexes would have been impacted by being left out of the King’s speech and the French state visit at large, Jennie said: “I don’t imagine Harry or Meghan will have paid much attention to the Macron visit.

“If they did, they would probably feel relieved that they don’t have to get dressed up and perform what is a very delicate and probably quite stressful diplomatic duty.”

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, arrives to attend the second day of an appeal court hearing at the High Court in London, challenging the loss of his UK security detail in London, United Kingdom on April 09, 2025.

Given the years-long strained relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles, it’s no surprise that the monarch didn’t acknowledge the Duke of Sussex in his address.

Prince Harry recently told the BBC that he would “love a reconciliation” with his father, though he claimed the king “won’t speak” to him.

“There’s no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious,” Harry said, adding that he has since “forgiven” them for their many “disagreements.”

The tone of their union has shifted drastically. Gone are the days when the world applauded Meghan as the refreshing face of the monarchy. Now, mood boards, curated collages, and filtered snapshots of red-headed toddlers facing away from the camera dominate her media presence. Instead of being celebrated for transparency, Meghan has fueled endless speculation around her pregnancies, her children, and even the authenticity of her marriage.

What should have been a sweet anniversary tribute turned into a parade of suspect images—digitally altered, low-resolution photos that reignited conspiracy theories surrounding “moon bumps” and surrogacy. The irony? Meghan could easily shut these rumors down with clear, unedited images. But she won’t. Because controlling the narrative is the strategy—even if the narrative now paints her as disingenuous.

    The Emasculation of Prince Harry

Harry and Meghan: Did Buckingham Palace PLANT NEGATIVE STORIES about Netflix couple?

At the heart of this spectacle is Prince Harry, once the cheeky, brave heart of the royal family. Today, he is often depicted as a broken man—emotionally neutered and publicly diminished. His face, once radiating mischief and confidence, now reads weariness and detachment. Royal commentators and viewers alike note the contrast between earlier photos brimming with genuine affection and more recent ones that feel strained and performative.

The accusation that Meghan has “emasculated” Harry has become more than tabloid fodder—it’s a conversation across global media. From making him her podcast footnote to reportedly banning any major presence of him in her upcoming projects, Meghan has turned Harry from prince to prop.

    From Oprah to Obscurity

The damage to Harry’s standing didn’t stem solely from Meghan. His tell-all memoir Spare delivered blow after blow to the monarchy, crossing every red line his family had laid out. Attacks on his stepmother, Camilla; allegations involving his sister-in-law, Kate; and deeply personal betrayals of his own brother William have put him beyond the royal pale.

And while Meghan launched accusations of racism in her infamous Oprah interview, it was Harry’s complicity and follow-up media behavior that severed the final threads holding him to his former world.

Meghan’s “Power of Yet” — Or “Power of Yawn”?

Perhaps no moment better encapsulates the absurdity of Meghan’s rebrand than her now-viral “Power of Yet” speech from a podcast interview. Delivering recycled TED Talk platitudes with forced emotion and calculated pauses, Meghan attempted to frame her stalling brand as simply “not-yet realized greatness.”

Except the phrase was ripped off from a 2014 TED talk by psychologist Carol Dweck. And instead of inspiring listeners, it became a meme. One viral tweet summarized it best: “The only thing Meghan has yet to do is stop embarrassing herself.”

Her podcast—despite tens of millions in promotion and access to A-list names—tanked. It didn’t just fail to break into the top 10; it fell out of the charts entirely. The reason? A lack of originality, coupled with Meghan’s obsessive image curation, repelled listeners in an age where authenticity rules.

Chrissy Teigen: Meghan’s Newest “Sister in Scandal”

In a desperate attempt to gain relevance, Markle has now enlisted Chrissy Teigen—a woman widely condemned for her history of cyberbullying—as the headline guest for Season 2 of With Love, Meghan. This partnership raised immediate eyebrows. Teigen, once dubbed “Twitter’s mean girl,” faced backlash for targeting a teenage Courtney Stodden with suicidal messages. Meghan, who has cut off family members and old friends for far less, now publicly embraces Teigen in what critics call a “bullies unite” alliance.

The hypocrisy couldn’t be more blatant: Meghan campaigns against online hate while platforming a notorious online aggressor. If this is the brand’s revival strategy, it reeks of desperation.

Cozying Up to the Wrong Crowd

Perhaps more damning is Meghan’s recent attempt to cozy up to Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Once snapped at the Lion King premiere alongside the music royalty, Meghan was swiftly ghosted after revealing a private text from Beyoncé in her Netflix series. In a world of brand integrity and controlled narratives, that’s a cardinal sin.

To add insult to injury, the timing couldn’t be worse. Jay-Z is rumored to be nervously monitoring the P. Diddy trial—a scandal with explosive implications for anyone even loosely associated. Meghan, either tone-deaf or blinded by star power, keeps trying to insert herself into circles that no longer welcome her.

The Fallacy of Self-Help Faux Depth

From emailing her kids every night (yes, really) to sprinkling dried flowers for “magic,” Meghan’s public persona is a Pinterest board trapped in 2012. What once could have been perceived as charming quirkiness now comes across as contrived and outdated.

Even the most ardent defenders are finding it hard to justify her behavior. When media allies begin to mock her—like the hosts who ridiculed her “emails to the kids” segment—it signals the tide has turned. Meghan’s faux-vulnerability, teary confessions, and phony self-help jargon are no longer winning hearts. They’re generating eye rolls.

Where Does It Go From Here?

There’s no denying that Meghan Markle is a brand in crisis—and Prince Harry is collateral damage. From high-profile partnerships to grassroots sentiment, the collapse is unfolding in real time. Hollywood’s elite no longer see her as “in.” Royal insiders have shut the door. And the public? They’ve tuned out.

Yet Meghan continues, arms outstretched, toward a spotlight that continues to shrink.

Because perhaps the only thing Meghan hasn’t realized—yet—is that the world has moved on.
